Walking the streets of New
York City, people often ask Chelsea store employee Devyn Shaughnessy, “Wow, where did you get those crazy leggings?” She in fact designs them herself. It all began with a $50 gift card she had found on the street. Frustrated after discovering that it would only buy her one pair of leggings, Devyn tracked down the retailer’s spandex wholesaler. That’s when the experimenting began.
Zippers, studs, sequins, mesh – while learning how to craft her own leggings she incorporated it all, and in the process fine-tuned what would become her own unique look. Devyn now has an online store at www.ustrendy.com and sells to boutiques in New York and England.
She has recently branched out into designing dresses, inspired by creating illusions with nude fabric that can “play tricks with your eyes at night.” Devyn also looks forward to collaborating with other artists as she expands her business in 2012.

rom Tucson to Portland you can find Buffalo customers who practice urban farming by keeping chickens. Chickens lay an average of five eggs per week, love to gobble up kitchen scraps and can prove to be a relatively easy foray into farming—if you’ve got the space. So if you’d like to have a chick chick here and a chick chick there, here are some tips to get started.

Make some space: To raise chickens, you’ll need enough outdoor space for a coop, where the birds will roost, sleep and lay, and an outdoor—but protected—run where they can get exercise, eat, peck and scratch. In general, each chicken will need two square feet in the coop and 10 square feet in the run. Remember, the coop should be ventilated but secure enough to keep out urban predators like dogs, cats and raccoons. The run should also be fully enclosed in tight-knit wire.
First things first: Check your local city and neighborhood zoning ordinances to ensure that you are allowed to keep chickens in the city. If you have to use a paper towel, make sure it gets a chance to clean up as many things as possible: if you dry a cup with one, then take a swipe at the stove top as well. You get the idea.
Recycle your sticky notes – the adhesive can go in the paper recycle no problem.

Tin containers are great items to repurpose. Think coffee cans, cookie tins, and the like. Remember to keep the lids so you can wrap them in cute papers for baked goods. They also serve as excellent containers for extra screws, nuts, bolts, or for your extra buttons. Think about packaging when purchasing household items. For example, cardboard egg cartons can be recycled, so buy those instead of Styrofoam. Better yet, give them to your friends who have chickens and you might get them returned with eggs!
Repurpose all those shopping bags with handles that you get at fancy stores. Small sizes can be used again for lint in the laundry, lunch bags, gift bags, treat bags for baked goods and the large sizes are ideal for taking your unwanted clothing to Buffalo Exchange.
Drain your bathtub water into your yard to water your trees. Works best in arid climates. Not recommended for that walk up in Brooklyn.

peaking of reusable totes, Buffalo Exchange just came out with one of their own. For only $2.00, you too can sport one of these adorable bags with art by local Tucson artist, Joe Pagac. They fold down to almost nothing when you aren’t using them, and can be used for everything from groceries to laundry. They are also a little more environmental than some, sporting 70% recycled plastic bottles in the fabric content.
When the printer spits out extra paper at work, cut it down to note size and make a pad for your desk.
