WELCOME TO BPO SUMMERFEST 2021! We’ve been holding our breath for the opportunity to return to local parks and venues and perform for our neighbors in the community spaces of Western New York. The long-standing tradition of concerts in the parks is an opportunity to meet and mingle with family and friends to celebrate our region in the company of outstanding musicians providing extraordinary performances. After the disappointment of last year’s pause in our summer schedule, we’re excited to introduce a new format at our Olmsted Park concert series featuring the BPO Brass, including trumpeters Alex Jokipii, Geoff Hardcastle and Phil Christner; trombonists Jonathan Lombardo, Tim Smith, and Filipe Pereira; and Daniel Kerdelewicz and Jay Matthews on French horn, with Dinesh Joseph on percussion. The genesis of this past concert season allowed us to explore the world-class talent of our musicians in unique ways, and we hope you were able to participate in our BPOnDemand events, BPO Out of the Box presentations, and our musician profiles in collaboration with WNED, to name just a few. Now, with the world re-opening, we’re taking note of our recent innovations and exploring how we can continue to incorporate them into our traditional offerings. Speaking of tradition, in addition to our new partnership with Buffalo Olmsted Park Conservancy performing at Riverside Park, South Park, Front Park, Cazenovia Park, Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, and Delaware Park, we’re pleased to return to several of our tried-and-true locations at Clarence Town Park, Niawanda Park, Bassett Park, M&T Plaza, Ellicottville Summer Music Festival, and Old Fort Niagara. And for those of you with a little wanderlust, Escape is at Hand for the Travellin’ Man when your BPO visits Batavia Downs to reunite with The Strictly Hip and perform the Music of The Tragically Hip. Of course, it wouldn’t be a ‘sunsational’ summer without the introduction of our spectacular 2021-22 season. We’ve included several pages in this book teasing the master composers, swinging tributes, and special events you can expect as we return to Kleinhans Music Hall. We hope to see you there!

Join the Buffalo Philharmonic as we celebrate Erie County’s 200th Birthday!

The significant milestone of Erie County’s bicentennial is an opportunity to join together as a community to reflect on the history, stories, and legacies of the many men and women who came before us, and to celebrate the diversity that makes Erie County such a vibrant place to live. New York State officially recognized Erie County on April 2, 1821. After the American Revolution, the Holland Land Company had purchased 3.2 million acres of land from the Seneca Nation of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois). In 1808, New York organized the westernmost land as Niagara County, but by 1821, the population had increased so much that Niagara County was split. Erie County was created, defined as the land south of Tonawanda Creek, consisting of ten towns and the Buffalo Creek Reservation. Today, Erie County has twenty-five towns, three cities, two tribal reservations, and a population of approximately 920,000. Erie County has ties to several U.S. Presidents. Millard Fillmore practiced law in East Aurora before serving as President. Later, he returned to Erie County and helped establish the University of Buffalo, Buffalo General Hospital, and the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society. Grover Cleveland practiced law in Buffalo before becoming Erie County Sheriff and then Mayor of Buffalo. President William McKinley was assassinated at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, and on September 14th, Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in as the 26th President at the Wilcox Mansion on Delaware Avenue. 9

Once heavily forested frontier, the Erie Canal brought prosperity and made the region one of the largest shipping and rail centers in the country. Erie County was also the birthplace of numerous inventors or the manufacturing homes of their inventions. Buffalo has a history with the Ball glass fruit jar, the Barcalounger, and Carrier Air Conditioning. Wilson Greatbatch developed the implantable pacemaker in Clarence, and Bell Aircraft, one of the largest suppliers of aircraft during WWII, was first established on Elmwood Avenue. The county boasts major works by both local and national architects: Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, H. H. Richardson, E.B. Green and William Wicks, and Louise Bethune. Famous writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Twain, and Lauren Belfer have called the area “home.” The county has given the world Fisher-Price toys and the chicken wing. Today, we celebrate our heritage and look forward to a bright future. The bio-medical research corridor is at the forefront of international scientific research. Companies from across the county do business internationally and even in outer space! The county has showcased its history, art, and architecture to become a heritage tourism destination. The Buffalo Philharmonic is honored to represent Erie County internationally through our radio and television broadcasts, recordings, and touring. We are grateful to Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and the members of the Erie County Legislature for supporting the arts and cultural organizations in our community, and celebrate the bicentennial of our great Erie County!

Frederick Law Olmsted, America’s first and greatest landscape architect, once said, “A park is a work of art, designed to produce certain effects upon the minds of men.” His system of parks and parkways in Buffalo, inspired by Joseph Ellicott’s radial street layout, was the first of its kind in the nation, and he proclaimed Buffalo to be “the best designed city in the country, if not the world.” Designed nearly 150 years ago, more than 1 million people use Buffalo’s historic, award-winning Olmsted Park System annually for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the System consists of six major parks, their connecting parkways and circles, and several smaller spaces. Today, it comprises 75% of the city’s parkland. In 1978, The Buffalo Friends of Olmsted Parks was formed to advocate for our Olmsted Parks. In 1995, we were renamed the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, independent community organization. Our mission promotes, preserves, restores, enhances, and ensures maintenance of Olmsted Parks and Parkways in the Greater Buffalo area to guarantee Olmsted park experiences for current and future generations. Jena Abati, soprano Jena studied voice at Eastman Conservatory of Music and Canisius College. She also received vocal guidance from Evans Mirageas, artistic director of the Cincinnati Opera, and Giovanni Reggioli, past artistic director of the Washington National Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. Jena is the recipient of the Andy Anselmo Scholarship, and awarded first place in voice for New York State and Eastern United States by the MTNA, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and Eastman Advanced Performance, and has been featured in Classical Singer magazine. Jena was the soloist in the documentaries “Building a Basilica” and “Proving Holiness,” which aired on national and international television. She was a featured singer in “Life Is A Cabaret” at Kleinhans Music Hall and with the Camerata di Sant’ Antonio. Jena is an alumna and past featured soloist of the Canisius Chorale, Chromatic Club, Eastman Rep Singers, and Rochester University Women’s Chorus. She is the featured singer for St. Joseph’s Cathedral and the Buffalo Bisons, and has performed for numerous organizations including Make-A-Wish Foundation, Lewiston Council of the Arts, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and WCHOB. ArtVoice claimed her portrayal of Musetta in Nickel City Opera’s La Boheme, to be “excellent….her light soprano voice is beautiful.” Buffalo Rising praised Jena in the role of Barbarina, Nickel City Opera’s Le Nozze di Figaro, saying her “voice and demeanor were perfect for the role,” and the Buffalo News further stated her performance was “girlish and engaging.” In June 2016, Jena portrayed the role of Melodie Jones in Nickel City Opera’s world premiere of SHOT! at Shea’s. Jena has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, Summa Cum Laude, in Music, a minor in Women Studies, and Master of Science degree in Anatomy. She is a Professor at ECC in their Biology department. Jena also owns the Music Academy of WNY, a local acclaimed music studio, where she teaches voice, piano, four Show Choirs, and directs five musical productions a year.

Jacek Muzyk, French horn Jacek Muzyk, born in Krakow, Poland, began to study French horn at the age of 18 and graduated with a master’s degree from the Academy of Music in Krakow. Muzyk earned his second master’s degree at the Mannes College of Music in New York City studying under David Jolley. He continued his education at the Juilliard School of Music under William Purvis and at Rice University in Houston, Texas under William VerMeulen. Then, Muzyk returned to Poland and worked full time with the best Polish orchestras, including Sinfonia Varsovia, the National Philharmonic of Warsaw,

Polish Radio Orchestra, and the Krakow Philharmonic. In 1999, he was nominated the Principal Horn for Krystian Zimerman’s Polish Festival Orchestra, the elite group of Poland’s finest musicians that toured Europe and the United States with more than 40 performances of Chopin’s concertos. The tour won numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award. In 2002, Muzyk moved to the United States where he played with the Houston Grand Opera and the Dallas Symphony before being appointed the Principal Horn with the Buffalo Philharmonic. He made guest appearances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Saint Louis Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and other orchestras in the USA, Asia, Europe, and South America, often performing as a guest soloist. Muzyk has given numerous master classes and recitals throughout all habitable continents and has made solo recordings under the Polish Radio label. Currently, there are three CD recordings of Muzyk’s performances: Mozart’s Concertos (including all concertos); Bach Music for French Horn (Cello Suites No. 1, 2, and 3); and Horn Constellation (French horn played in various configurations from solo and duets with various instruments; Michal Muzyk, Mr. Muzyk’s talented young son, plays first horn in a duet with his father in one of the selections). After winning the Associate Principal Horn position with the Houston Symphony and performing there for a year, Mr. Muzyk decided to return to Buffalo and continues as Principal French Horn for the BPO.

Daniel Kerdelewicz, French horn Daniel Kerdelewicz is Associate Principal Horn of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he has held since 2009. Prior to his BPO appointment he held positions with the National Forum of Music, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Representative Band of Polish Land Forces. Mr. Kerdelewicz was born and raised in Eastern Poland and earned his master degree at the Karol Lipinski Academy of Music in Wroclaw. In addition to his duties with the BPO he has also performed and recorded with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Chautauqua Symphony. In the Summer Mr. Kerdelewicz enjoys performing as Principal Horn with the Finger Lakes Opera. He has participated in numerous music festivals around the world such as Warsaw Autumn, Beethoven Easter Festival, Spring for Music at Carnegie Hall and the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan. Mr. Kerdelewicz has soloed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 2009 performed the world premiere of Concerto for Horn, Saxophone and Orchestra by Wojtek Blecharz with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.
