Buford Football To the Buford Community and Our Guests: On behalf of the Buford Board of Education and the Buford City School System, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Tom Riden Stadium at Buford High School. The Buford City School System has a strong tradition of football and a program that has been a source of pride for many years. The Buford football team has the distinct honor of being the 1978 and 2001 “A” Football State Champions, the 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 “AA” Football State Champions, the 2012 and 2013 “AAA” Football State Champions, and the 2014 “AAAA” Football State Champions. Among other accomplishments are an amazing 237 wins and only 14 losses in the past 17 seasons, a record for football programs in the state of Georgia. With each year, the program is growing and making strides to build upon its many successes and Buford Tradition. Coach John Ford and his assistants are providing strong leadership and dedication to the BHS football program. However, our program is a combined effort of many talented groups, including the Marching Band of Wolves, directed by Matt Young and assistants, and the Wolves cheerleading squad, coached by Morgan Collins and assistants. The faculty and staff are also included in this group because of their high academic expectations. As a result of these high expectations, many BHS student athletes and musicians have gone on to participate and find much success at the college level. Buford High School continues to be recognized as a leader for its commitment to academic quality and an overall standard of excellence in the total school program. The community and fan support of the BHS extracurricular programs makes a difference in the lives of young people. Together, let us continue to support and take pride in our BHS Wolves!

Ed Shaddix, Principal It is my honor to be the new principal of Buford High School. In a very short time it has become clear what makes Buford special, and that is the people. This community is a family and one I am excited to join. Over the next few months I look forward to meeting and working with many of you. Buford High School’s academic performance over the last several years has been outstanding. When coupled with the successes in athletics and the arts I do not know of any school with a more well-rounded program that supports student growth. That is a testament to the hard work put in by our faculty as well as our students. We are committed to Triple “A” Excellence: Excellence in Academics, Excellence in Athletics, and Excellence in the Arts. Thank you for attending tonight’s game at Tom Riden Stadium. Your support of our football players, cheerleaders and band members is a clear example of what makes Buford a special place to live, learn, work, and play. Buford is a shining example of what makes America the greatest country in the world. Through the support of a strong Board of Education, Board of Commissioners, and Buford Community we work to develop our students to become great people and productive members of society. Again, thank you for your support of our students and the Buford Community. Have a great evening and GO WOLVES!

Ed Shaddix and Family

Sincerely, Ed Shaddix Principal Buford High School

RYAN DANIEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Tragically, on the morning of January 26, 2012, the Buford Community lost one of its favorite and most beloved sons. Ryan Daniel – Buford Student, Athlete, Teacher, and Coach, is no longer here, but his memory and legacy will always remain with us. Ryan Daniel loved others and he loved Buford. He was a gentle giant who considered himself a servant and a caretaker of all he encountered. He lived each day to make the lives of those around him better – a smile, kind word, great quote, or selfless act of service were his trademarks. If RD were here tonight, he would remind us to love the Lord, to love each other, and to “get better every day!” Buford High School, along with Ryan’s family and friends, began an annual graduation tradition of awarding the Ryan Daniel Memorial Scholarship in 2012. Each year the scholarship will be awarded to deserving student athletes who embody the heart and spirit of RD. The 2017 recipients of the Ryan Daniel Memorial Scholarship were Audrey Allison, Jenna Burleson, Rachel Dobbs, Daniel Garcia, Cole Gunter, Tobi Obasanya, Sahil Patel, Tyler Perkins, Jake Simpson, and Cole Tarleton. This scholarship is funded by donations and proceeds from the Ryan Daniel Scholarship 5k. For more information on the 5k, go to the Ryan Daniel Scholarship page on Facebook. Donations can also be made directly to People’s Bank & Trust.

CHAMPIONSHIP TRADITION

The Buford Wolves

One can’t help but be aware of the rich tradition that is associated with this team and this school. There are people, now too old to go to the games, who still remember wearing a green jersey, men for whom “The Buford Wolves” still has great meaning. There are also young men, too young to be left alone in the stadium, who would one day like to wear a green jersey and be a part of the Wolves’ legacy. Tradition is a burden in many ways. A tradition like ours means you can’t quit, you can’t lose your cool, and you always have to show class, even when you aren’t up to it. You have to do some things you don’t want to do and do some things you think you can’t do, simply because the tradition demands it of you. On the other hand, tradition is the thing that sustains us. It is that which allows us to prevail in ways we could not otherwise. We’re convinced that greatness in any field has to come from some kind of tradition. Our job is to make certain that the tradition that is the Buford High School Wolves means as much and stands for as much to those who are yet to come, as it has for us and those who have gone before us.

Coach Wood’s record and awards speak for themselves, but his character, ethics, and dedication to the young people he coached is without equal. Many lives have been impacted forever by Coach Dexter Wood’s leadership and standard of excellence and he is most deserving of being admitted into the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Knowing the facts could save your athlete’s life. Recognition and proper management of concussions when they first occur can prevent further injury or even death. Most athletes can safely return to play after a concussion, but must recover at their own rate. The Concussion Institute at Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth is the first facility of its kind in the Southeast, and its experts help athletes return to the field as quickly, and as safely, as possible. Learn more about concussions and how to protect your athlete. Download A Parent’s Guide to Concussion Care at gwinnettmedicalcenter.org/concussionresources.
