WELCOME TO

Leading Edge We hope and pray that you have come to Leading Edge this summer with a great sense of expectation and excitement. We are very much looking forward to seeing what God is going to do this year, in your lives and ours, as we come together to relax, recharge and be renewed. Our theme this year is Walking the Wire - following Jesus in a confusing world. As we try to live as followers of Jesus, it is in the context of a world which is ever changing and always confusing. The call of Christ upon his disciples is a high calling, but not easy. During this week we will be looking at how Jesus engaged in a world of contradictions and pain, and finding ways of applying this to our own calling to be missionary disciples. We will be meeting with God in the study of the scripture, through prayer and worship, and in his presence, rebalance our lives to live the life Christ longs for us. The following pages provide you with all the information you will need to get the most out of the week. It includes programme details as well as practical information and suggestions for things to do when you are not in sessions. Please take time to read through this programme so that you are familiar with all that is on offer. If you still have queries, the volunteers at the Information Desk in the Guy Nelson Hall foyer will do their best to find answers for you. In his name The Leading Edge Team

The Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB) is the Baptist family in England and Wales (there is also the Baptist Union of Wales). It is made up of churches, regional associations, the national resource centre and Baptist colleges. The Union works with others in mission - locally, regionally and internationally. In fact, the Baptist vision of the church is not constrained by national borders. Baptists see themselves as part of the world church, with a mission to bring people everywhere into God’s family. BUGB is a part of the world family of Baptists, and was one of the founding members of the European Baptist Federation and the Baptist World Alliance. The annual Baptist Assembly is jointly hosted with BMS World Mission and usually held over the first May Bank Holiday weekend each year. It is a further opportunity for Baptists to join together to learn, celebrate, worship and deliberate together. BUGB is a diverse Union with small and large congregations, different nationalities and differing styles of worship, yet united by core values and a common purpose of encouraging missionary disciples so as to change lives and transform communities with the message and love of Jesus Christ. Each Sunday almost a third of a million people worship in our churches – 140,000 of these people being in membership. The national resource centre at Baptist House in Didcot, Oxfordshire provides advice and help on legal, financial, mission, ministry and communications matters, and a variety of useful publications for Baptist churches and colleges. Many staff come from either professional (eg accountancy, finance, HR, legal, communications, secretarial, social work) or ministerial backgrounds to serve God and the Baptist family. All of the work of the national resource is funded by Home Mission giving. Founded in 1993 by Dennis Pethers, Viz-AViz Ministries exists for one key purpose: ‘To work alongside churches and other Christian organisations in communicating the Gospel to the vast numbers who know little or nothing of the truth about Jesus.’ This ministry is vital as most children, young people and adults in the UK are, in the words of Jesus, ‘lost’. Consequently, the ministry is literally a matter of life and death. Millions of people across the UK face a lost eternity but have little or no idea that there is a God who loves them and who sent his son to “seek and to save the lost”. Our passion is that every person in the UK should have the opportunity to hear the message of Jesus. Over the last 16 years we have developed teams and resources that effectively communicate the message of Jesus and we have seen many come to faith. Our core areas of evangelistic ministry are adult, youth, children and equipping the church. Underpinning all these are our technical solutions, media and graphic, and administration teams. So whether Taste comes for an evening, our graphic design team lays out a new fresh image for your letterheads, or we bring an effective year-long mission strategy, Viz-A-Viz Ministries will help you reach your neighbourhood for Jesus. To discuss how best to use us, phone the office on 01268 530531 or check out our website on www.vizaviz.org

abcde A-Z of key information BOOKSHOP Colin Phillips and his team provide the bookshop in the foyer of the Bridge House Theatre. The bookshop has a variety of resources, including books by our speakers, BUGB and Viz-AViz resources, gifts and books. The bookshop will be open each day 10:30-22:00 (closed 16:30-18:00) except on Thursday when it will be open 16:00-22:00.

CAR PARKING We ask that cars be parked in the specified parking areas and not on the campsite wherever possible, particularly if you are likely to need to use your vehicle during the week. We realise that many use their car for storage or a power source. In these situations it is fine to have your car onsite but we would request that you keep vehicle movement on the campsite area to an absolute minimum, for the safety of guests and the protection of the school sports fields. If you do need to move your vehicle on or off the campsite, please do so with great care and preferably when the least amount of foot traffic is around. It may be easier to move your vehicle into the car parks while a session is on, in preparation for your subsequent departure.

CASH MACHINES Cash machines are mostly located in Warwick on High Street.

CHEMICAL TOILET DISPOSAL Please only dispose of chemical toilet contents in the specified locations marked on the site map.

CHILDREN Please remember to exercise the same care for your children while you are at Leading Edge as you would at home. Ensure they follow normal guidelines about talking to strangers and going home alone. There will be other people not associated with Leading Edge onsite at times, particularly at the Sports Centre when we are not using it. Please be mindful of this. Could we ask that you do not leave the site without your children, in case something should happen in your absence and we are not able to contact you.

fghij The children’s workers would appreciate it if you could collect your children as soon as possible at the close of each session. If you need to bring children into the main sessions, please consider other guests and ensure they are not disturbed. The evening sessions held in the Guy Nelson Hall will be video relayed into the Bridge House Theatre foyer for the benefit of parents who have children not quite ready for bed, but not quite ready to settle into a meeting situation!!

COOKING If using BBQ’s we request that you make sure these are kept well off the grass to protect the playing surfaces. Please only use purpose built cooking equipment and facilities.

ADULT PROGRAMME

The adult programme has three venues this year. Bible studies will be hosted in Venue1 and Venue3, and evening celebrations will be held in Venue1. For those in the 20s wanting to explore the theme in more interactive ways, there is V2 both in the morning and evening. Venue1 (Guy Nelson Hall) and Venue3 (Bridge House Theatre) are for all other adults. Tuesday, Wednesday Friday and Saturday mornings begin with bible studies at each of the venues. Then after the break, there’s a series of seminars beginning at 11:30.

Afternoons are left free to relax or enjoy some sports or entertainment. However, on Friday 14:00-17:00 there will be a special resources display in Venue1 where you can come and chat to folks from our partner organisations and other groups associated with Leading Edge. Each evening (with the exception of Thursday) there are two celebrations followed by an AfterHours programme. Thursday is the day off for you to chill and maybe venture offsite. We end on Sunday with our final celebrations 10:00-12:15, so join us for these closing sessions as we prepare to ‘walk the wire’ in our local communities. And if you don’t want to travel home on an empty stomach but can’t be bothered to cook and wash up, why not book yourself in for a Sunday Lunch?

V2 is the café-style venue aimed at 18-30s at Leading Edge. With a more creative and interactive style of learning, the venue gives an opportunity for young adults to explore and worship God in a real and honest way. V2 is about asking questions, joining conversations, pushing boundaries and getting active in your faith. A place where young adults can unpack the bible and explore what it means to look like Jesus in the world today. Prepare to be challenged, share your story and laugh a lot! With both morning bible studies and evening sessions, V2 will put their own stamp on the adult programme theme and passages for this year.

BIBLE STUDY

Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday 09:30-11:00 There are three styles of bible study, all considering the same biblical passage each day.

9

Venue1 (Guy Nelson Hall) Sitting around tables, this interactive Bible Study will include engaging, reflective worship followed by expository bible study. There will be an interactive element for participants to interact with bible passages and themes, and to explore their practical application. Coffee and butties available from the Pound Café throughout.

V2 Designed for 18-30s this café style venue provides an opportunity for creative and interactive discussion, opening up new ways for the bible to be explored within the context of today’s world. Various members of our speaking team will share in the teaching during the week. Venue3 (Bridge House Theatre) A time of worship will be followed by biblical exposition from various gifted speakers. This will then lead to an extended time for questions and answers so that everyone can engage with the passage and discover its relevance for today.

SEMINARS

Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday 11:30-12:30

This year’s Leading Edge will have a series of seminars exploring deeper the theme of ‘Walking the Wire - following Jesus in a confusing world’. Through a varied programme we hope that there will be something for everyone.

The confusing world of work One of the most confusing worlds we live in is that of our workplace. Through this series of seminars we will be looking at what it means to be a Christian in the workplace. How can we live out our God-given calling whilst doing that which we are paid to do? Are there compromises to be made? This will have interactive series of seminars led by Amanda Allchorn. Speakers will include Tracy Cotterell, Malcolm Broad and Colin Philips.

Creative walking

Crossingplaces

“In the beginning God created…” Jon Turner from Saltmine Trust will lead this stream. Saltmine Trust is a leading Christian mission organisation that serves the UK Church that uses creativity to communicate Christ. They are perhaps best known for their theatre company which performs nationwide. However, their core objective is evangelism. This series of seminars will teach us how to use creativity in our personal witness and church-based outreach.

Crossingplaces are where we are • with non-believers • with the intent to be, to do, to say and to think as Christ would in the situation • with an expectancy that something transformational will happen This seminar series will be looking at how as Christians we can make the best use of our everyday living. It will be hosted by Kathryn Morgan with a different guest each day.

Hot wires This series of seminars will be tackling four big issues facing Christians today. It aims to explore and discuss in a relaxed way some of the matters that cause deepest concern to Christians. It will do so in a biblical and pragmatic way. Jonathan Edwards will host this stream, with guest speakers covering subjects such as Assisted Suicide, Interfaith, Sexuality and The Excluded.

Leadership in a confusing world Leadership is often a swear word in Baptist life. What though does it mean to lead God’s people in a confusing world? This series of seminars will explain a few of the themes under the heading of ‘leadership in a confusing world’, hosted by Paul Hills.

The world of confusing relationships

The stereotypical, ‘husband and wife, 2.4 children and a dog’ shaped family is far from the norm in 2010. In this interactive and fun seminar stream, a panel of four people will be looking at the issues facing us in our relationships today, from a biblical perspective and in the context of social culture today. Hosted by the Hollidge tribe!

CELEBRATIONS Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday 19:15-21:15 Sunday 10:00-12:15 There will be two celebrations, in Venue1 and V2. Both venues will include worship, teaching and other elements, with various members of the speaking team contributing at each. The worship leaders will be Luke Hamlyn in Venue1 and Ben Judson in V2. See daily programme guide for more detailed information.

Offerings Two offerings will be taken this year at the adult celebrations, on Friday and Saturday evenings. The Friday offering will be shared equally between the ministries of BUGB and Viz-A-Viz Ministries. The Saturday offering will go towards the costs of Leading Edge. Many of you will know we have always tried to keep the cost of attending Leading Edge as low as possible, to make it accessible to as many as possible, and the event is subsidised heavily by the Baptist Union. We encourage you to use the envelopes in your pack to allow us to claim Gift Aid back on your gift. By claiming the Gift Aid back, your gift becomes 28% more valuable to us as income, without affecting your pocket any further. Please make sure you use the correct envelope for the respective offerings.

Friday Afternoon 14:00-17:00 Why not take time out to come and visit us at the Leading Edge Resource Exhibition in Venue1 (Guy Nelson Hall)? An opportunity for you to discover resources and services available to help you back in the local church and a chance to make connections. This year The Baptist Union of Great Britain, Viz-A-Viz Ministries, Arise Ministries, BMS World Mission, London Institute of Contemporary Christianity (LICC), Baptist Insurance Company (BIC), The Baptist Times, Micah Challenge and Sound Foundations will be some of the exhibitors. The aim of the afternoon is to equip, encourage and resource you. The BUGB ‘inflatable church’ will make another appearance and there will also be free face painting for children…and maybe adults too!

Ian Bunce has held many roles within the Baptist Family including youth officer for the YBA and Regional Minister for the EBA. His present role as Head of the BUGB Mission Department sees Ian overseeing children’s and youth work, church planting, creative mission projects, evangelism and third-age mission and ministry. Ian is married to Vikki, also a Baptist Minister, who works in the Ministry Department of the BUGB. They have two children, David and Rebecca. When not working, Ian enjoys being with his family, walking and photography. He is also known to brew wine and beer! Andy Clasper is the Executive Director of Micah Challenge UK. Andy worked in management consultancy and for the Mayor of London before taking on his current role in 2007. Andy has a love for developing nations and is passionate about the role of the church in the world. Andy is famous for having possibly the loudest laugh in the world. Having always wanted to be a musician he is delighted to have married Lucy, a professional cellist, and believes she makes him talented “by association”.

Tracy Cotterell is Chief Operating Officer at The London Institute for Contemporary Christianity (LICC). Tracy is ‘principal conductor’ of the LICC team, helping them do the right things in the right way with the right partners at the right time with the right resources! Tracy spent 13 years working in marketing and advertising as a researcher and strategic planner and completed a theology degree at the London School of Theology in 2003. She is married to John and they have three teenagers to keep them close to contemporary culture! Her passions for chocolate, shopping and God led Claire Earl away from the promised land of the West of England to be a missionary to the young people of the East. Presently a Baptist Minister in Ipswich, Claire is also the mum of Lucy, aged 1, wife to Richard and big sister to many young people. Claire likes to be known as smiley, inspiring and passionate but sometimes is known as slightly disorganised and in need of a coffee.

Joel Edwards is the International Director for Micah Challenge. He was part of the team that created the Challenge campaign and was instrumental in forming the Micah Call. Joel is committed to matters of faith, justice and equality, and advocates on behalf of the world’s poor. Joel serves as a Commissioner on the Equality and Human Rights Commission for the UK and as an Advisory Member of Tony Blair’s Faith Foundation. A regular broadcaster with the BBC and other UK and international media channels, Joel is often asked to bring a Christian perspective to current issues. Prior to his role within Micah Challenge, Joel was General Director of the Evangelical Alliance UK for over 10 years. He is married to Carol and they have two adult children. Jonathan Edwards has been General Secretary of the Baptist Union since 2006. He’s married to Sue and they have three children – Hannah (19), Tom (17) and Bethany (11). They live in Newbury in Berkshire – not because it’s handy for the horse racing but because it’s a short journey from Didcot where the BUBG resource centre is located. Jonathan writes, “It’s an amazing privilege to serve the Baptist family. It’s a big family with more than 2,000 churches and over a third of a million people, and I am thrilled to do anything I can to encourage and inspire God’s people in these challenging and creative days.” Luke Hamlyn is an itinerant worship leader, facilitator, and musician living in Greater London. He has been involved in many different services, events, and conferences across the UK; working with a wide range of churches and organisations. Luke has a heart to serve and resource the church, engage with people and encourage them in their journey with God. He is also involved in training, mentoring, songwriting and recording. You can find out more about Luke at www.lukehamlyn.co.uk Paul Hills is Regional Minister Team Leader for the Eastern Baptist Association and Chair of Directors of Leading Edge. Life has seen a few changes this year - a new grandchild and another expected, a significant birthday and a dog! All these keep him very busy but on those rare free moments he enjoys watching the past episodes of Star Trek on Virgin 1.

Matt and Juls Hollidge are the founders of KORE, www.kore.uk.com, which aims to engage with emerging culture, explore new ideas and creatively equip the church. The KORE website is a hub for free resources, fresh ideas and new ways to engage. They work with charities, the public sector and the church, helping them look at how they engage with the world, developing new concepts and strategy. They enjoy home-made curries, good craic and can be found dreaming up their next idea in their local Costa.

David, her ever supportive husband, tells the grandchildren that nanny’s MPhil means that she is now a Mistress of Philately.

Kathryn Morgan is a Baptist minister working as a national Mission Adviser with the BUGB. Having been a church planter and local minister, she served as a Regional Minister (Southern Counties Baptist Association) for seven years before taking up her present post in 2008.
