TASTE OF BOLINGBROOK Village residents ready themselves for festival’s tasty eats and treats

Summer is filled with gracious weather and outdoor fun, and it is the season of the festival.

The fourth Annual Taste of Bolingbrook will take place from noon to 10 p.m on Saturday, May 19 and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 20 behind Bolingbrook’s Town Center, 375 W. Briarcliff Rd. “This year’s Taste of Bolingbrook event will bring new restaurants and an even better lineup of entertainment,” President and CEO of the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce Mike Evans said in a recent press release.

More than a dozen local restaurants and several area businesses are participating this year. There also will be a complete family activity zone.

According to Evans, the first taste of Bolingbrook was held at the Promenade as a restauranttype festival aimed at driving some excitement back into the economy.

“It was so well received that we expanded the event to an evening behind village hall and then a two-day taste as a way to ‘kick off’ the summer festival series that happens all over suburban Chicago,” Evans said.

Housing crisis forces area residents to seek assistance

Month after month, the number of foreclosures in the area are still on the increase, and area agencies are reaching out to help and encouraging those in need to take it.

According to the Illinois Foreclosure Listing Service, foreclosures have been steadily rising each month throughout the six counties of Cook, Will, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and DuPage. The total home foreclosures in January for the combined counties were 5,138.In February,the total number jumped to 6,168 - almost a 20 percent increase from January. In March, the number of foreclosures increased even higher to 6,442 - a 5 percent increase from February.

Overall, there was about a 25 percent increase from January to March of 2012.

Locally, Executive Director Robert Kalnicky of the Community Service of Northern Will County, says though the ramifications of the economy have been leveling off for the last six months to nine months, foreclosures or not declining,with the agency handling about 100 cases each month with

residents throughout its service area of communities Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Lockport, Plainfield, Lemont and Naperville.

“The number one message we want to get out is that residents should seek help,” said Kalnicky.

“A lot of times people are too afraid or embarrassed—there is

no reason to be. This is the sole reason we exist—to help. I am confident we can help you and to realize you are not alone.”

According to the latest Chicago foreclosure statistics from ILFLS.com, the total number of foreclosures in DuPage County increased by about 9.2 percent from January to February.

In January, there were 448 foreclosures in DuPage County. In February, the total rose to 492.

The total number of foreclosures in Will County increased by 10.4 percent between January, when there were 482 foreclosures, and February, when there were 538 foreclosures.

However, Kalnicky says there

are fairly new programs, like the Hardest Hit Fund, that are making it easier for residents to get help.

The Hardest Hit Fund is designed to offer those who have reduced their income by at 20 percent due to under or unemployment a chance to modify their loans.An application can be found online at www.thecsc.org.

“We also have seen a lot more effort on the part of lenders this year, “ said Kalnicky. “Bank of America is one of the banks we work with and we we will continue to work with them to help customer’s get the help they need.”

HOUSING Continued from page 2 In fact, Bank of America is one of the industry’s largest banks, and has recently opened a customer assistance center in Bolingbrook to serve its mortgage customers throughout Illinois.The Bolingbrook Customer Assistance Center is the second location in the Chicagoland area. The center is designed to provide customers facing financial hardship the opportunity to receive personal assistance with their mortgage and home equity loans.The center will be staffed with home retention specialists who will be able to process modification applications from start to finish onsite with full underwriting so many customers can receive decisions onsite.

This will give borrowers an opportunity to meet faceto-face with Bank of America home retention specialists to review options for home loan modifications or other alternatives to foreclosure, as well as review

loan modification files already in progress.

“Bank of America has assisted more than 40,000 Illinois homeowners with permanent modifications since January 2008, but there is more work to be done,” said Tim Maloney Illinois president, Bank of America, said in a statement. “We recognize the importance of face-to-face outreach, and expect that making ourselves even more accessible to homeowners who are having difficulty making their payments due to economic conditions will have a significant impact on our statewide foreclosure prevention efforts.”

“We have a great committee made up of residents and business leaders that keep their pulse on what will benefit the event,” Evans said. “Last year we heard people wanted more family activities. So this year we added puppet shows, family entertainment on stage, and an inflatable obstacle course and bounce house.”

The event will still include the climbing wall and dozens of family friendly food options.

Another new feature of this year’s Taste of Bolingbrook is the StayCation Raffle.The winner will receive an all-expense paid trip for two to spend in Bolingbrook.

The package is for a weekend stay at the Aloft Hotel and include all meals, shopping, movie tickets, water park passes, spa treatments and more.The total prize value is near $2,000.

“There was a time in Bolingbrook where we had few dining options and really nothing to entertain families or out of town guests,” Evans said. “Now that is no longer the case.

“The purpose of the Taste of Bolingbrook is to highlight the culinary destination that Bolingbrook has become and additionally the Staycation raffle helps show off all the fun things there are in Bolingbrook. Just like long-time residents of Chicago who often don’t visit the now named Willis Tower or the many great museums, resident’s here in Bolingbrook take for granted the exciting recreational and tourism opportunities we have.”

Village readies for street resurfacing

Construction is a necessary evil that comes with warm weather, and the village of Bolingbrook will begin its annual street resurfacing project.

Village trustees awarded nearly $732,000 to James D. Fiala Paving Co. to repave 24 streets throughout the village,including Bunker Hill Drive, Canyon Drive, Clover Lane, Commonwealth Court, Cottonwood Circle, Farm Gate Lane, FlagstaffRoad, Glen Lake Drive, Jill Lane, Nottingham Drive, Old Chicago Road, Old Stone Road, Potomac Court, Shenandoah Court, Shilling Court, Tecumseh Drive, Wildflower Way, Kingsbrooke Circle, Lacrosse Drive, Navajo Drive, Radcliff Drive, Richmond Drive, Springwood Circle and Territorial Drive.

Public Works Director Mike Drey explained that the conditions of streets throughout the village are looked at each year and projects are completed based on priority, deeming streets whose conditions are worse to be completed first.

An additional street resurfacing project for the

Bolingbrook Historic District was also awarded to Fiala Paving for an approximate $168,000. The roads include Blackhawk Lane, DuPage Drive, Gettysburg Drive, Pinto Drive and Arrowhead Lane.

Further work to be completed this season includes road pavement patching throughout the village, with a contract approved for K-Five

Construction in the amount of nearly $373,000. A $308,000 contract also was approved for SKC Construction Inc. to complete this year’s village pavement crack filling program.

Local leaders urge Metra to add rush-hour trains

Local leaders are pushing for a better commute for area Metra passengers, asking for an additional morning and evening rush-hour routes.

Congressman Dan Lipinski, along with Romeoville Mayor John Noak and more than 20 local elected officials, is calling on Metra to add two rush-hour trains to the Heritage Corridor line, a passenger line that offers the least service of all Metra trains with just three trains per day.

Rep. Lipinski’s office announced that Noak and Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves delivered a letter to Metra’s Board of Directors last week urging it to add two rush hour trains to the Heritage Corridor line – one morning inbound train and one evening outbound train.

He explained that Will County’s population has seen tremendous growth as well as the Cook County communities the line services, yet Metra hasn’t kept pace.

“With the addition of a new Romeoville station next year, adding more trains to the Heritage Corridor is a top priority for the village,” Noak said.“Our population has almost doubled in the last decade, and with growth continuing in the area, we need to give residents more options for getting to work.”

Lipinski also referred to a recent costly study that would add six trains to the line but says it is flawed and does not answer the needs of those along the Heritage Corridor.

“Moreover, it focused on adding trains during midday,

which is not what we are seeking.

Adding the two trains we are talking about is something that we should be able to do in the near future at modest cost,” he said.

The Heritage Corridor line runs between Joliet and Chicago’s Union Station, with stops in Summit,Willow Springs, Lemont, and Lockport.

In addition to pushing for more trains on the Heritage Corridor, Congressman Lipinski has been working to improve on-time performance. Following a meeting he arranged between Metra and CN in January, the line went from Metra’s worst on-time performer in December to its best in February. For the first four months of this year, ontime performance has ranged between 95 percent and 99 percent.

“We commend Metra for making improvements that led to better on-time performance on the Heritage line,” Senate

Republican Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) said. “Now we believe they can and should take the next step to ensure residents of our region get access to the service options they deserve as well.”

Lipinski said he will continue to work with Metra and local leaders to get it done.

Gentle Giant Pets are very important to people. I can speak of dogs. I have first hand knowledge of one named “Cody.” Any type of pet can help people.

Dogs in general help lonely seniors, service disable persons, help police, firefighters and veterans. They bring comfort and joy to sick children. Pets are true friends.

The gentle giant that I write about is Cody. He has beautiful blue eyes. He is a siberian husky.

He is now two years old and weighs about 751bs. He loves people and is very friendly. I am “grandma” to him. When he knows he is coming to visit me he goes for his leash.Upon arrival he gives me a much appreciated kiss. When his two owners go to work, they give him a treat.They then put on cartoons (softly)

on the TV - so he does not feel alone. He also enjoys sleeping with his owners.

I read stories on how dogs or pets have saved lives. I believe this.

Most homes in our country have some type of pet. They are true friends.They teach us many things. Our veterans with posttraumatic stress or some type of physical (loss of limbs, etc.) are helped greatly by dogs.They deserve our “unconditional” love. They give back so much more.

Our humane society needs people to “adopt” a pet. They are wonderful companions to anyone (young or old) that is in need of true friendship.

Bolingbrook students win statewide competition Taylor Coley, a fourth-grade student from OakView Elementary in Bolingbrook, won first prize at the 2012 Illinois State Tar Wars Poster Contest on April 23.

Coley qualified for the State Tar Wars competition by earning high marks at the Will County Tar Wars Poster Contest hosted by the Will County Health Department in Joliet on March 30. She now advances to compete at the National Tar Wars Poster Contest, held in conjunction with the National Tar Wars Conference in Washington D.C. A second Bolingbrook student also earned special recognition at the Illinois State Tar Wars event.

Yazmin SanJuanita Barreto won second place in the statewide competition.Barreto is a fifth-grade student at Liberty Elementary in Bolingbrook.

The Tar Wars National Conference celebrates youth,

creativity and being tobacco-free.

The conference concludes with a festive awards ceremony, during which the National Poster Contest winners are announced.

All state contest winners attending the National Tar Wars finals receive a prize package including: a certificate of appreciation, a ribbon, a color copy of their poster and a special gift.

The top 10 posters will receive special recognition and honorable mention submissions will also be recognized.

The Tar Wars National Conference is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to receive recognition for their tobacco-free efforts, voice their opinions about tobacco use to their congressional leaders, participate in tobaccofree workshops and meet other state winners who share their tobacco-free views.

Michigan Principal to take over reins at BHS A veteran administrator with 25 years of experience in the field of education will be the next principal of Bolingbrook High School.

Michael D. White, currently the principal of Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Mich., will assume his duties on July 2, replacing Fabby Williams who announced several months ago he was leaving the position.

White has been principal at Pioneer since 2007. Prior to that he served as principal of Pierce Middle School in South Redford, Mich., for five years; assistant principal at Riverside Middle School in Dearborn Heights, Mich., for four years; and assistant principal in his hometown of Jackson, Mich., for three years.

His teaching experience

includes five years in the Tacoma, Wash., school district; three years in the Peninsula S c h o o l District in Gig Harbor, Michael D. Wash.; and White five years in Jackson.

Throughout his teaching career, he has also coached various sports and served as athletic director for three years in Jackson.

White is a member of the U.S.

Army Reserves, having served one year on active duty at Ft. Benning, Ga., in 2010 as a drill sergeant training U.S. infantry soldiers for deployment overseas. He also served with the U.S. Army Rangers for four years before he launched his career in education.

A graduate of Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in classroom teaching, he obtained his Master of Arts in educational leadership from Eastern Michigan University.

He is currently working on a specialist degree in educational leadership from EMU.

Calendar ONGOING Senior Services Center of Will County Activities. Senior Services Center of Will County wants to keep seniors healthy and living independently as long as possible. We have two exercise classes that we would like to feature; Tai Chi and our Westfield Walkers Club. Tai Chi is offered here at the center on Tuesday’s and other locations throughout the county. This is a 12-week program and is enjoyed by all the seniors that participate. Join us on Mondays and Wednesdays as we walk the mall. Will County commuters can save with Pace vanpool

Looking for an alternative to the daily stress of driving to work? Vanpooling is an economical, convenient, and environmentally friendly alternative to driving alone.

In a Pace Vanpool, at least four people, with similar schedules and routes, often working at the same company, or in the same building, share a Paceprovided vehicle. For a monthly fee, the riders receive the van, complete with a fuel card, maintenance card, insurance, I-PASS, roadside assistance, car washes, and more.

Driven by one of the participants, who receives their share without a fee, riders make a three–month commitment to the program. The driver also receives 300 miles for personal use, including gas and insurance. That mileage can be banked as well, up to an extra

500 miles.

“If you figure a driver may bank 800 miles, then they can take a nice trip with that,” said Pace representative Beth Gonzalez. “It becomes like a second vehicle for them.”

After the three-month minimum, a month-to-month commitment is required.

Riders are responsible for physically taking the car in for gas and repairs, as well as filling out a monthly report, and getting the vehicle washed.

To be a driver or a back-up driver, participants must have a good driving record, pass a physical and a drug test, and take a one-day safety and orientation class.

Vanpools save employees money on their transportation.

Gonzalez said in addition to saving money on fuel, tolls, parking, and vehicle wear and tear, many insurance companies will lower rates once they know a person is no longer

driving their vehicle to work every day.

Additionally, the vanpool gives riders time to relax, reduces pollution and traffic congestions.

“You can socialize, read, or work on your computer,” Gonzalez said. She added that studies have shown employees who participate in vanpool programs have less stress, better work performance, and participating companies have experienced less tardiness from staff members and increased retention by offering a reliable means of getting to the jobsite each day.

Twenty-mile fares begin at about $122 dollars per person, and the program does qualify for the Pre-tax Commuter Benefit, which allows people to use pre-tax dollars to fund public transportation. Employers must participate, or, for companies that don’t participate, there is an option for a four percent

discount for automatic payment withdrawal.

Another vanpool option is available for those commuters taking METRA trains, but who need a ride from the train station stops to their places of employment. Working with the municipalities, Pace offers the METRA FEEDER Van Pool for $58 per month, with many of the same arrangements as the traditional VanPool Program.

Mini-vans, ramped minivans, conversion vans, and liftequipped conversion vans are available through Pace. More than 300 Van Pool routes are in operation and the program has been going for 20 years.

Obituary

Elbert R. Adams Born Nov. 25, 1937 passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2012.

Mr. Adams was the beloved husband to Charlene Adams. Cherished father to Stephanie, Ruthe, Cindy, and Elbert. Loved Grandfather of Renee, Emily, Sarah, and Xenia.

Great Grandfather to Kayla, Nylah, and Devon.

Mr. Adams is survived by his siblings David, Linda, and Mike. Elbert was a retired carpenter.

Mr. Adams was an active member of Medinah Baptist church and while he was well he was faithful in the ministry. In his later years he enjoyed his family.

Mr. Adams died in his home in Bolingbrook, Ill. His memorial service was held Monday, May 14 at Bolingbrook-McCauley funeral home.

Reverse mortgages not for the uninformed retiree

“Why do I need to save? I’ll just tap the equity in my house when I retire,” said a former client at the end of 2006. He and his wife were in their late 50s, and I was recommending that they increase their retirement contributions.

During the real estate boom, I encountered a lot of people who thought they would use their home equity to fund everything from big splurges, to college tuition, to retirement. When the bubble burst, many were forced to spend savings and cash in investments and now face retirement with home equity that is on average 30 percent lower than it was at the peak. For some of these near or current retirees, the allure of a reverse mortgage is calling.

A reverse mortgage is a home loan that allows homeowners 62 and older to convert a portion of the equity in their homes into cash, as long as the home remains their primary residence. Most reverse mortgages are offered through the Department of Housing and Urban Development and are guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) through a program called Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECM). (FHA provides online counselors as well as valuable information at: http://1.usa.gov/ nJKRpy or by phone at (800) 5694287.)

Unlike a traditional mortgage,

there’s no lengthy underwriting process, and you don’t make monthly principal and interest payments.

You are required to continue to pay real estate taxes, utilities, and hazard and flood insurance premiums. The amount you can borrow depends on several factors, which include the age of the youngest borrower, the current interest rate,the appraised value of your home and whether the rate is fixed or adjustable.The more valuable your home is, the older you are and the lower the interest rate, the more you can borrow.

If the home is sold or no longer used as a primary residence, or the borrower dies, then the loan, the accumulated interest and other HECM finance charges must be repaid. All proceeds beyond the amount owed belong to your surviving spouse or estate.

If the house sells for less than the money owed, the FHA takes the loss - no debt is passed along to the estate or heirs.

In essence, a reverse mortgage can help retirees convert an illiquid asset - a house - into a liquid one that can help supplement retirement income.

Sounds too good to be true, right? For some, it is. One big downside to reverse mortgages is that younger retirees who use them may run out of money and options at too young an age.

These folks may have been better off selling their homes and using the equity to purchase another

home or renting. Additionally, it may make sense to spend other assets before extracting home equity via a reverse mortgage.

Another consideration regarding reverse mortgages is the cost. FHA charges a single upfront mortgage premium equal to 2 percent of the home’s appraised value or $625,500, whichever is less.The borrower is also charged a 1.25 percent annual premium on the entire loan balance. In addition, the borrower is charged a monthly servicing fee of up to $35. Add it all up, and it’s clear that a reverse mortgage isn’t a good choice if the borrower will move out of the home in three years or less because of the high costs upfront.

It’s also important to remember that reverse mortgage payouts can impact a borrower’s eligibility for means-tested benefits programs, like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or Medicaid.

Consumer Union issued a warning on reverse mortgages, which noted “deep concerns about the suitability of the products for some borrowers” and “the aggressive marketing and misleading advertising of reverse mortgages to seniors.”

Celebrities like James Garner, Robert Wagner, Fred Thompson and Henry Winkler have all been paid to tout the benefits of reverse mortgages.

You may be wondering, “What does the Fonz know about reverse mortgages?” The answer is not much, which is why I

strongly recommend that, if you are serious about a reverse mortgage, consult a registered investment advisor or an attorney who can help determine if it is in your best interests.

It was a happy day for a lot of girls on the Bolingbrook girls track team.

Not only did the Raiders qualify several individuals for state, they also took home the Downers Grove North Sectional title last Thursday with 117.5 points.

GIRLS TRACK Leading the way was Kimberly Azie, who took home three sectional titles. She won the 100 (12.25) and 200 (24.99) and teamed with Rosemary Onyegbule, Jessica Watkins and Asha Wallace to win the 400 relay (47.64).

“I’m really happy,” Azie said. “I thank God and my coach and my teammates.”

The relay squad held off a late charge by Romeoville to win the title and made up for a mistake the previous week.

“We’re really happy,”Azie said.“We’ve been really working on our handoffs.At conference we dropped the baton, so we didn’t want that to happen again. We’re going to drop the time at state.”

Coming in second behind Azie in the 100 was fellow senior Kym Taylor, who was fighting injury to advance to state with a time of 12.66.

“When we get to the line, we said we wanted to get first and second and end the year with a bang,”Taylor said.“This week was dedicated to get my hamstring stronger. I was very nervous and there was a point where I didn’t know if I could push harder. I wanted to end my senior year off the right way.”

Both girls hope to not only medal at state, but to do better than they did last year at state.

“We have really big expectations and are really motivated,” Azie said. “It’s going to be pretty big for us. I think as a team we could place top three at state. I want to place in the top four in both (100 and 200).”

“Last year I placed ninth in the state and Kim placed seventh, so our goal is to place higher,”Taylor added.

While Kayla Bell didn’t win a sectional title, she is headed to state in multiple events for the first time.

She went 17-5.75 in the long jump and 369.75 in the triple jump to place third in each and advanced on qualifying distance.

“It feels really good but I’m paying for it now,” Bell said.“My legs are kind of shot, but it was worth it. I’m more proud of my team.

So many girls are qualifying for state. This is the first time I qualified in both events.

Heading into their May 5 match against Joliet West, the Bolingbrook volleyball team had posted only four wins all season.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL Since then, the Raiders have won five straight nontournament games, including four in a row after the LincolnWay East Invite.

The four-game winning streak started with a 25-20, 17-25, 2523 over Lockport, the first time Bolingbrook has ever defeated the Porters.

“It was the best practice we ever had after we beat Lockport and that was a confidence boost,” said senior Matthew Peloquin. “We won the first and lost the second and had to come back with no momentum to win the last game. It was a great confidence boost for us.

We went and beat them on their senior night. It is great to say that we are the seniors that beat Lockport for the first time, we are setting a bar.”

Peloquin and fellow seniors Isaac Ramos, Jeffery Lofton– Cooper, Tevin Teamer, Shawn Sanghera and Alex Strobel won their most recent game on their own senior night, a 25-6, 17-25, 25-12 win over Joliet Central.

“That second game probably should not have gone that way, but we bounced back,” said Bolingbrook coach Andrea Bercot.

The newly found confidence the Raiders have took a while to get. Prior to their win over Joliet West, the Raiders had not won a non-tournament game since March 26.

“It was a long, long run,” Peloquin said. “We started off rocky.We didn’t have a consistent

lineup, but now we have one that works and we can score points. This is the right time to reach this level of intensity.

That win in March was an important one, as the win was a 25-18, 25-22 win over Plainfield East, the Raiders first round opponent in the playoffs.

“We have already beat Plainfield East twice and both times in two games,” Peloquin said.“If we win

that, we will see Plainfield South, so we believe we can make it to the finals. If we win, we can be the first Bolingbrook team to get that far.”

That is the goal of these seniors to end this season with a legacy.

“We want to set a tone for the program,” Peloquin said.“We just want to set more standards.”

Many racing options in driving distance

Local race fans don’t have to wait until NASCAR comes to Chicagoland Speedway to see fun, exciting racing.

With a hour drive, race fans can catch exciting motorsport action at either Grundy County or Sycamore Speedway.

Both tracks are open for the season and are running races every weekend.

On Friday, May 25, and nearly every Friday throughout the season, Sycamore Speedway has its first demolition derby of 2012 season.

They also have spectator and compact racing, figure 8, one on one drag races, powder puff racing and a full size car demo.

On May 26, Sycamore features stock car racingfor all Classes with the Memorial Day Championships.

Grundy County Speedway in Morris also has events over Memorial Day weekend.

May 18 is a stock car full program where all members of the Armed Forces in uniform are admitted free.

May 25 features Memorial Weekend Twin 25’s Late Model Special plus Full Program Those wanting to participate instead of watch can stay closer to home and head to Route 66 raceway for Friday night open test and tune.

The “Fun Run” format invites all racers, from the casual firsttime racer in a street car to a seasoned veteran in a purpose built dragster to participate in the on-track excitement.

Real Estate & Business Daring to dream again Dear Dave, I’m 53 and in a position financially to retire in a couple of years. I want to keep working some after retirement, but I’m so burned out by my job that I’m not sure what I would do.

How can I find something that would light my fire again?

Nancy Dear Nancy, If you haven’t dreamed in a while, dreaming becomes an exercise. I think it would be a good idea to set aside some time, turn off the television, and just think about the things you like doing.

Maybe you could schedule a long weekend, just for Nancy, and get away somewhere to just relax, unwind, and think about the things that make you happy.

It’s easy to get out of the habit of dreaming, but try to find some time that will allow you to get back the feelings you had when you were 18 and felt like you could conquer the world. Visit that place in your mind and your spirit, and think about what you’d aim at if you could do it all over again.

Dreaming is a great thing, but you have to formulate an idea. Once you have that in place, you can begin to develop a strategy for getting there.

Make a list of the things you need to do ahead of time to make the transition possible.

Would you need to take some classes or save up and buy some equipment between now and then?
