Will County detective receives FOP Award A Will County Sheriff’s Detective has been presented with Illinois Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Meritorious Service Award for his off-duty actions in July that stopped the attempted robberies of a neighbor and a local business. “Detective Shaun Moran didn’t care whether he was on or off duty, he saw fellow citizens in danger and he stepped in to stop potentially dangerous crimes from happening,” said Illinois FOP State Lodge President Chris Southwood. “Citizens are safe and perpetrators were arrested as a result of Detective Moran’s decisive actions.” On July 23, Will County Sheriff’s Detective Shaun Moran, who was off duty, was arriving home with his family and saw two men wearing masks and hoods approaching his neighbor, who was getting groceries out of his car. Moran didn’t want to get his family involved in a confrontation, so he honked his car horn to scare off the masked men, who

then fled the area. Moran contacted the Will County Sheriff’s Department about the incident and began to gather evidence from the scene, and while doing so he saw the suspects’ vehicle again as it drove through the area. Moran followed the vehicle to a Speedway gas station that had been robbed recently, and summoned deputies to the scene. When other officers arrived the suspects rammed Moran’s personal vehicle and fled. The two suspects were arrested following a brief chase. “This incident is proactive police work at its finest, even when members of the Sheriff’s Office are off-duty,” said Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley. “I want to thank Detective Shaun Moran for his quick thinking and action in tracking down these individuals that came into our community attempting to further their criminal ways. This was a good job done by all.”

The address for South Campus is 26655 West Eames Street, Channahon, IL 60410 and the address for Central Campus is 301 South Wabena Avenue, Minooka, IL 60447. In addition to the breakfast, MCHS is asking the local community to help update their Military Honor Wall prior to the November 10th assembly. Students’ families were asked to send a picture of a family member (or members) to honor their family (immediate family members, as well as

cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.) who are, or have served in the Armed Forces. “As Americans, we have set aside November 11th, Veterans Day, to reflect, remember and honor those who served in the United States Armed Forces,” said Jamie Soliman, Principal of Minooka Community High School. “Today there are approximately 18.5 million veterans living among us. We honor them by teaching younger generations about their sacrifices on our behalf. Educators are instrumental to these efforts,” continued Soliman. Please email photos to aseidel@mchs.net by November 3, 2023. Hard copies can also be brought in to the main office at Central or South Campus and can be scanned into the system as well.

Sheriff Dart launches program to address catalytic converter thefts in Cook County Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart unveiled a new tool today to help deter the ongoing and costly theft of catalytic converters throughout Cook County. The tool etches a vehicle’s VIN number on the expensive auto part, which has become a favorite target of thieves, who can quickly cut them from the bottom of parked cars and profit from the sale of their highly sought metals. This is the latest step in the Sheriff Office’s work to help motorists protect themselves from this rampant crime. Since 2021, the Sheriff’s Office has offered free spray painting of the auto part at community events. The florescent paint, which includes a Sheriff’s star, is intended to prevent the parts from being sold to recyclers, thus reducing the chance thieves will go through the effort of taking

the item. The etched VIN number will also now allow law enforcement to trace a recovered stolen catalytic converter back to the owner, potentially increasing the chance for criminal charges. While the crime is notoriously hard to prevent and prosecute, in May Sheriff’s Police recovered more than 600 stolen catalytic converters from a residence in unincorporated Worth Township. According to data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, more than 64,000 catalytic converters were stolen last year, making Illinois the 4th highest state for such thefts in the country. The Sheriff’s Office will now provide the spray painting and etching program free of charge to pre-registered motorists at community events in the coming weeks.
