Dr. James A. Mitchem Jr. served as VVSD Superintendent of Schools for a decade, and during that time, he was the driving force behind establishing a building whose sole purpose is to serve VVSD’s youngest learners. His vision came to fruition in 2017 when the newly remodeled Valley View Early Childhood Center opened. In recognition of Dr. Mitchem’s vision and commitment, as well as his leadership in a VVSD career that covered four decades, the building is now known as the Dr. James A. Mitchem,

The JMEC was officially dedicated in a ceremony at the entrance to the school on Sept. 30. “Dr. Mitchem lives his belief that in order to inspire student’s minds, we must first touch their hearts,” said VVSD Board of Education President Steve Quigley said. “He has done more than just express those words; he has lived them every day to the benefit of the Valley View community. “In addition to his commitment to our youngest learners,” Quigley continued, “during his 40 years of service, Dr.

Mitchem always demonstrated his dedication to all VVSD students, families, and educators.” The Dr. James A. Mitchem, Jr. Early Childhood Center is located at 753 Dalhart Ave. in Romeoville. The building was expanded in 2017 under Dr. Mitchem’s leadership and now serves over 600 pre-kindergarten students. The Early Childhood Center provides a high-quality and engaging learning environment and is recognized as an ExceleRate Illinois Gold Circle of Quality pre-kindergarten program.

success in a season that almost wasn t By maRK gRegORy editorial director

This season, the baseball team at Crest Hill’s Richland Grade School posted a 10-5 record and won its opening game of the IESA state regionals. However, the success of the Eagles this year came the moment the players took the field. This season almost didn’t happen for Richland as the school board decided in March to abolish baseball, softball and golf from the slate of sports offered by the school due to lack of participation. After upset parents and coach Joe Marshall voiced their displeasure with the decision and the process in which the board came to that decision — the school decided to reinstate baseball with stipulations. “I wasn’t fighting for me. I was fighting fro these eighth graders that, when they were in sixth grade lost almost every game 15-0,” said Marshall, who completed his 20th season as coach at Richland. “I don’t want that to be their last memory of school ball. “I am just so happy the kids were able to have this year so they could have their eighth grade memories instead of remembering that we didn’t have it. I am happy for the kids.” The Richland season did not get off to a great start this season, as the Eagles dropped their first three games, but then things turned around. “Our first game didn’t go too well, but we picked it up and after the fourth loss, we started winning more and more games,” said eighth grader Naseem Jaber. “We did way better than we did when I was a sixth grader and that made me happy. I feel more accomplished. It was unreal. I got my chance to prove myself and prove that I can win.” The improvement of the team did not just happen overnight. After the loss of the 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Marshall worked with the majority of the players throughout the fall and during the summer season, where he completed his 43rd season as a volun-

The work Marshall put in for the team team, on and off the diamond, helped with the season this year. “It was great. Our sixth grade year, we were not very good, but this year everyone improved,” said eighth grader Damian Herrera, who was co-MVP of the Richland team this year. “It was very important because our coach fought for us to even be able to play baseball for the school and that was very important.” Playing for the school was something the ballplayers enjoyed — having

a sense of school pride. “I am happy that we were able to play our last year at Richland and happy we were able to make a memory,” said eighth grader and co-MVP Gordie Kairis. “I am happy that we got to play and that we got the season off. “)When I heard baseball was done) I was disappointed, but I knew we had hope because I knew coach Joe was going to try and get baseball back. “We showed what we can be and we left good examples for the sixth and seventh graders.” Even athletes that never played for Richland before were thankful for the season. “In the middle of the season, they toold me that we almost didn’t have a chance to play eighth grade baseball,” said eighth grader Freddy Casas. “I would have missed having that

chance.” Once the chance was given to them, the players took advantage. After losing three in a row to open play, Richland posted a 10-2 record the rest of the way, winning nine straight at the end of the year. “We finished 10-5, which was our best season since 2016 and we won the first regional game and that was the first time we won since 2012,” Marshall said. “We were No. 2 seed in the regional, our highest since 2012. We started off 0-3 and it would have been very easy to get down. But, then we went 10-2 the rest of the way We won our last eight regular season games and our first regional game. “They really improved, they have great attitudes and they want to get better. They are great kids with great parents. They got to have a winning

season and got to play in a regional championship game. For the season that almost wasn’t, they really had a great year.” Now, the fight for numbers starts over again. With only five players that will not graduate this year, Marshall will look at the returning players as well as the current fifth graders in hopes enough boys and girls want to play next year. When the school board reinstated the program the stipulation was that the team needed to have a minimum of 14 athletes signed up to field a team. “Between Thanksgiving nad Christmas we will put out the sheet to see who is interested,” Marshall said. “If we have a team, we want to get working on scheduling early. “We will have to get a lot of new kids out to have a team.”

Larkins leads Plainfield Central to best record since ‘08 By CuRT heRROn for the enterprise

www.buglenewspapers.com While Aaron Larkins, Jr. was the obvious star in Plainfield Central’s 17-6 Southwest Prairie Conference East Division victory over Plainfield East on Saturday in the Wildcats’ homecoming contest, the senior running back was quick to give credit to the linemen that helped open up a lot of running room for him. All Larkins did was rush for 258 yards on 44 carries and caught a pass for 13 yards and capped his day with a three-yard touchdown with 1:36 left to give his team a 17-0 lead. He acknowledges that he wouldn’t have been able to turn in such an impressive performance if not for the work of seniors Nick Syron, Jay Colyer, Matt Koss and Reese Theobald and junior Jesse Perez along the offensive line and he even posed for pictures with the five linemen after the contest. Larkins had 13 carries in the third quarter to help the Wildcats

take a 10-0 lead and then had 14 more rushes in the fourth quarter with the highlight being his late score to break open a game in which the hosts only led 3-0 at halftime. “The play starts with them and they were doing their job,” Larkins said. “We picked it up obviously in the second half. And once we started clicking and were on the same page, that’s when the plays started happening. I just do whatever the team needs me to do and all I care about is getting into the end zone. “I like our determination and the hard work and effort that everyone has been putting in. Ever since the spring, we have just been working so hard.” The win improved coach Rob Keane’s squad to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play, which is good for a tie for first place with Plainfield South, who they will face on Friday in a game on the Cougars’ Field. As a result of claiming their fifth win, the Wildcats are now playoff eligible. The

Visually impaired runner joins cross country team Plainfield North High School senior Mi’kel Johnson-Watts is the first visually impaired crosscountry runner in the school’s history. The 17-year-old senior moved to District 202 last school year and spent his first year as a Tiger learning remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. He took his first steps inside North when all district students returned to inperson learning. “Getting to classes was a bumpy road. I had to have additional assistance,” Johnson-Watts said. Despite some initial challenges, he quickly focused on completing his goal to join the boys’ crosscountry team. “He instantly impressed me,” cross country Andrew Derks said. “He is incredibly real, kind, outgoing, and friendly and clearly has shown the ability to persevere through new challenges.” This is Johnson-Watts’ first time competing in any sport. Running works well for him physically because the shunt in his head pro-

hibits him from playing contact sports, he said. “It’s a blast. It feels like a junior marathon,” Johnson-Watts said of being on the team. Johnson-Watts has several designated running guides, but he primarily runs side-by-side with North freshman and boys’ crosscountry team manager, Aidan Dolata. “I’m basically Mi’kel’s eyes to help him avoid obstacles that could injure him and prevent him from running,” Dolata said. What someone can see from 800 feet, Johnson-Watts can see clearly from only about 20 feet away in his right eye. In his left eye, his visual acuity is 20/150. “I trust my teammates,” Johnson-Watts said. “He’s a senior and he gets to be a part of something. I’m going to cry talking about it and I’ve only known him for a few weeks. We’re really a good group to be a part of,” Derks said of the cross-country team and the Plainfield North family.

obama breaks ground on presidential center By peTeR hanCOCK Capitol news illinois

Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama returned to their old neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side on Tuesday to officially break ground on the Obama Presidential Center, a project they hope will become a hub for the development of new leadership and an economic boost to a long-neglected part of the city. “Chicago is where almost everything that is most precious to me began,” the former president said. “It’s where I found a home.” The center is being developed on a 19.3-acre site in Chicago’s Jackson Park, in a location just a few blocks from where the Obamas were married and the hospital where their two daughters were born. It is also on a site that once housed part of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. But it’s also an area that Michelle Obama remembered as being far away from the city’s main cultural centers when she was growing up in the neighborhood. “I remember that whenever me, my mom, dad, my brother wanted to do something special – to see art, to hear music, take in a new museum exhibit – we had to get my dad’s Buick 225, take Jeffery Boulevard to Lake Shore Drive and head north to downtown,” she

said. “And even as a child, I understood this disparity. I understood that whenever there was a huge investment of resources in the city, a new park or infrastructure improvements, or any other beautification effort, it just rarely happened in our neighborhood.” The Obamas were joined at the ceremony by Gov. JB Pritzker, who noted that the center will be the second presidential museum in Illinois after the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. “Which means we are proudly now known as the Land of Lincoln and Obama,” he said. “We need to check with Secretary of State Jesse White about changing the license plates in the state, but we’ll get there.” The center will be operated separately from the Obama Presidential Library, which is administered by the National Archives and Records Administration, a federal agency. The center will be operated privately by a nonprofit foundation. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot noted that the city will also invest some $200 million into improvements in Jackson Park as well as the surrounding neighborhood to provide more amenities and rehabilitate many of the homes in the area. “This is the future of the South Side that we will be creating in partnership with the community,” she said. “And this will not only send a ripple effect of

leadership for the community and the nation. “It won’t just be an exercise in nostalgia or looking backwards. We want to look forward,” he said. “We want this to be a living, thriving home for concerts, cultural events, lectures, trainings, summits, topical dialogues

and conversations. We want this to be a hub for in-house fellows with real world experience to share what’s working and what’s not in solving the big problems of the day.” The center is expected to open in 2025.

One Hundred Joliet Public Schools District 86 elementary students are currently participating in the Kids ‘n Nature program at Pilcher Park and Birdhaven Greenhouse. Fourth grade students from M.J. Cunningham, Edna Keith, A.O. Marshall, Isaac Singleton, and Woodland Elementary Schools attend the six-week after-school program. The Kids ‘n Nature program is a partnership with Joliet Public Schools District 86, the Joliet Park District, and the University of Illinois Extension of Will County. “We are so thankful for this partnership,” said Joliet Public Schools District 86 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse, “Without the continued support from the Joliet Park District and University of Illinois Extension, we would not be able

to offer this wonderful hands-on experience for our students.” “The Kids ‘n Nature program gives our 4th grade students a chance to see firsthand one of the beautiful natural parks the Joliet area has to offer,” Joliet Public Schools District 86 Program Coordinator for Physical Education, Health, and Athletics Joel Sischo added, “We hope our students take some of the outdoor adventure education they have learned and use it to explore other area parks with their families.” Activities will include learning about different habitats and animals, touring the greenhouse, hiking, exploring Hickory Creek, gardening, archery, and making art projects. An additional session is planned for the spring.

‘ wildcats’ fro m page 4 last time they qualified for postseason play was in 2012. This is the first time since 2008 that the Wildcats are off to a 5-1 start, their homecoming victory was their first since 2012 and this is the program’s first three-game winning streak since 2017. About the only down note for the Wildcats was that the Bengals (2-4, 1-1) were able to avoid becoming their third shutout victim of the season when they scored a touchdown on the game’s final play. Plainfield East hurt its cause by turning the ball over five times with CJ Jones getting two interceptions, Ethan Anderson and Devin Kan also each picked off a pass and had three tackles apiece while Zayn Zaidi recovered a fumble. “We knew it was a homecoming game so we were all locked in and focused and ready to play,” Jones said. “We weren’t worried about any distractions from the outside, we were just focused on the game and we were ready to go. “And on the big plays, we just had to lock in and settle down and take it one play at a time.” While the Wildcats coach is understandably pleased about his team’s strong start, he knows that they have another big conference showdown this week that they’ll need to be focused on. “I tell my wife all the time how blessed I am to have such an amazing group of young men and coaches around me and how the administration has been so supportive, it’s a special place,” Keane said. “It’s been 3-0 at halftime the last two weeks for us. We talked to our guys at the half about having confidence and moving forward and continuing tocreate opportunities for each other and playing tough. We said that if they came out and won the second half that they were going to win the game. “Hat’s off to Aaron, that was a workload and I hope that he continues to get the accolades and the attention that I think he deserves. And hats off to our defense since we allowed zero points until the last tick when we gave up a touchdown. These guys have really embraced the idea of playing together as a unit, and that’s a special thing to see.” In a first half that featured two turnovers by each squad, the Wildcats recorded the lone score when senior Brendan Prah made a 37-yard field goal with 58 seconds left in the opening quarter. Plainfield Central grabbed a 10-0 lead in the third quarter when it put together a 15-play, 65-yard drive that featured 10 carries by Larkins and it was capped by a one-yard run up the

middle by senior Ethan Obeng with 4:05 left in that quarter. Beside scoring the game’s first touchdown, Obeng led the Wildcats in tackles with seven, including one for a loss. Other top tacklers were Phillip Carlton (six tackles, two for loss) and Xander Casey (five tackles, one sack). “Our defense always prides itself on doing our jobs, and that’s the key to winning,” Obeng said. “When everyone focuses on their jobs, we all come together as a family to achieve one goal, which is to win. “We’ve been together since we were freshmen and even in prior seasons when our program was struggling, we stayed together and kept doing things that other people didn’t necessarily see. Now that we’re seniors and we’re able to showcase our talents, it shows that all of our hard work is paying off.” The Wildcats finished with 273 rushing yards and quarterback Connor Huffman was 6-for-11 for 37 yards, with all of that coming before the break. Larkins had all but one of his team’s carries in the final quarter, including nine in a row on a 42-yard series that resulted in the Wildcats’ final points. “At Plainfield Central, we love to run the ball and we’ve kind of taken that culture to heart,” Syron said. “Run the power. “And our defense really stepped up and I think they’re the most underrated part of our team, they haven’t been talked about enough. I’m very excited to be 5-1. I like our grit and having hard-nosed football players.” Shortly before the first half ended, the Bengals reached the Wildcats’ 14 yard line but turned the ball over on downs. Late in the third quarter, they reached the one but had that threat thwarted on an interception by Anderson. The Bengals went 65 yards on 10 plays to score just as time expired when Brandon Paradis (5-of-9, 88 yards) tossed a nine-yard pass to David Afemikhe, who fought hard to get into the end zone to prevent the shutout. Quinn Callaghan threw for 70 yards and ran for 24 yards for Plainfield East while Marco Liace used a 54-yard run to help him finish with 77 yards on eight carries. Other long plays on that final scoring series featured a 30-yard reception by Michael Morgan, who had three catches for 67 yards, and a 20-yard reception by Quinn Morris. Intercepting passes for the Bengals were Hunter McCloskey and Dominic McDonough while Morris recovered a late fumble. Plainfield East hopes to turn around its fortunes in its final game on its home field when it faces Joliet West. on Friday. Plainfield Central is 5-1 on the season, making it the best start since 2008. “I’m really proud of our defense and

in the way that they stepped up and kind of kept us in the game,” Bengals coach Brad Kunz said. “We were really struggling to finish drives and that came to bite us. We kind of caught some momentum at the end, but it was a little too late. “Every time that we were in a position to score it felt like we shot ourselves in the foot. But I’m of proud how we fought and I’m proud of the kids for keeping their heads up and battling the whole time. “Plainfield Central is a great team this year and we’re excited to see how they continue to progress, as well as how we progress.” At halftime, the six members of the 21st class of the Plainfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame were recognized. This year’s inductees are Jeremy Ellingwood, Heather Furr, Al Palar, Ryan Sharp, Taylor Tooley and Josh Winder.
