students at Troy 30-C school code for websites Students in Debra Benson’s consumer technology class recently designed and coded their own one-page website, using HTML and CSS coding programs to achieve the goal. Coding with HTML creates the structure of websites, she explained, and CSS gives it colors, text boxes, images and more. Benson said the programs students used to create their websites are the very same type of coding that frontend developers use in technology and other industries. “This is not just ‘drag and drop,’” Benson said. Her Troy Middle School 7th graders used the coding languages to create websites on such subjects as panda bears, why people need dogs, volleyball and football facts, the Maine coon cat, benefits of growing plants, mental disorders, a recipe for cannoli, how to care for pets, all about owning a cockatiel, and “Tom Brady vs Aaron Rodgers.” Students Lila Abbott, Hunter Biederman and Vanessa Estrada named their website, “Mexican Food.” It displays pictures of several types of Mexican foods, such as green enchiladas,
refried beans, and tamales, along with tips on how best to pair them with other foods. The site also included links to recipes. Lila said their first step was to get together and brainstorm ideas for the site. Vanessa said it was her first time coding and that she thought it was fun, even though it was complicated at times. Hunter said she also found coding to be fun. “Coding also teaches them critical thinking skills,” Benson added, “and builds their team collaborating skills.” “We are in an increasingly digitalized world,” Troy’s Educational Technology Coordinator Sarah Wells said. “Computer coding is super important for kids for the future, and it’s like learning a new language. They should start doing it early. It’s training their brains for things that are important - for things that were never imaginable when we were kids.” Jobs related to computer science and the tech workforce continue to be among the fastest growing and highest paying in the nation, with front-end developers in Chicago beginning with average salaries of $104,000, according

Crest Hill s Church of good shepherd evangelical Covenant held lucia Fest The Swedish tradition of Santa Lucia wa observed at Church of the Good Shepherd Evangelical Covenant, 2437 Plainfield Road, Crest Hill, at approximately noon, Sunday, Dec. 12, following the 10:45 a.m. worship service. The Queen of Light was portrayed by Abby Price, the daughter of Brad and Sabrina Price of Crest Hill. Price, 16, is an honor student at Joliet West High School, where she plays badminton and participates in the symphonic band, marching band, and Future Health Professionals Club. As a member of Church of the Good Shepherd Evangelical Covenant, she regularly attends SOJO (the high school youth group) and serves as a volunteer in the nursery and with various youth activities. Other interests include baking, water skiing, snowboarding, and babysitting. Upon graduation from high school, Price plans to attend college and will probably pursue a career in nursing. As part of the traditional Lucia Fest, the Queen of Light, also known as Lucia, was accompanied by at-
tendants portrayed by children from Church of the Good Shepherd Evangelical Covenant Sunday School. Faith Zosky will sing “Santa Lucia” and Brianna Barraza, the 2019 Lucia Queen, will read the legend of Lucia. The celebration of Lucia Fest is a Swedish custom that ushers in the Christmas holiday. According to legend, Lucia was a godly girl who became engaged to a nobleman at the age of 17. Before the wedding, Lucia gave her dowry to the poor as a thank you to God for answered prayer. Her intended husband, suspicious that she was a Christian, ordered her put to death on Dec. 13, 304 A.D. Hundreds of years later, Lucia reportedly appeared in western Sweden during a famine to distribute food among starving people. She wore a long white gown and was encircled by light. Following Lucia’s visit, the days grew longer, leading people to believe she brought the end of winter and the return of light. Lucia became known as a symbol of light, faith, and Christian charity.
The traditional celebration of Lucia Fest recognizes the return of light after the dark of winter and heralds the approaching Christmas season with music and candlelight.

First Latina candidate for Sheriff to break glass ceilings at Democratic slating On Monday, December 13 Carmen Navarro Gercone made her pitch to become the next Cook County Sheriff to the Democratic Slating Committee. The slating was held at IBEW Local 134 located at 2722 S. Martin Luther King Drive. Navarro Gercone is the first Latina to run for Sheriff, and if elected, she will become the first woman, first Latina and first person of color to become the Cook County Sheriff in the 190-year history of the office. She would also become the first sworn member to become Sheriff who rose through the ranks of the office in over 63 years. Breaking glass ceilings is nothing new to Navarro Gercone, who started her 26-year career at the Cook Count Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff and was promoted several times to lead her department as the 1st Assistant Deputy Superintendent. However, Navarro Gercone did not enter this race just to break
glass ceilings, but more importantly, to focus on reducing the violent crimes plaguing our communities. “Violent crime is affecting our daily lives. It has all of our citizens living in fear, has left communities in a continual cycle of violence and grief, caused our highways to become shooting galleries, incapacitated our economic industries, and most importantly, it is killing our children,” she said. In correspondence this week to the Democratic candidates running for elected office in Cook County, the party sent a 2-page contract, or “pledge,” candidates were strongly urged to sign. The pledge included a “solemn oath” to support the candidates who are “slated” by the party. Navarro Gercone denounced this move as an attempt to push two women of color out of the race who are challenging the incumbents who oversee the offices that affect crime and property taxes, which are two issues of concern
for many Cook County residents. She also questioned whether the party was trying to silence her due to her recent, public requests for leaders to focus on the violent crimes devastating Cook County. “Carmen is undeterred by these machine-era tactics and is looking forward to her presentation to
the committee. She will continue with her campaign regardless of who is slated because she believes that the citizens of Cook County want change. I agree, and I hope that the citizens will join me and vote for Carmen Navarro Gercone for Sheriff on June 28, 2022. I am proud to endorse her campaign,”
said Iris Martinez, Clerk of the Circuit Court and Committeeperson of the 33rd Ward.
