Kabi takes top honors in District 63 card design contest At its December 2 meeting, East Maine School District 63’s Board of Education recognized the eight finalists in the District’s 2021 Winter Card Design Contest. The top winner was able to attend the meeting – while other winners were able to watch online as all of the artwork was shared in a special presentation. Top honors went to Apollo School 3rd grader Aaravi Kabi, a Des Plaines resident, whose whimsical penguins in a snowy landscape are featured on this year’s District 63 winter card. District 63’s card design contest – now in its sixth year – is a chance for all students, K-8th grade, to submit a winter design and vie for the chance to adorn the District card, which is mailed to more than 300 community leaders, parent leaders, elected officials, and donors. Fifty-two students – representing all six K-8th grade District 63 schools – submitted entries. District administrators and other District 63 staff judged the pieces “blindly,” without knowing student names or schools. Best in Grade winners were: Kindergarten TIE Olivia Malkezdaq Niles / Washington School and Dia Modi Niles / Nelson School; 4th Grade Aishah Khursiwala Des Plaines / Apollo School 1st Grade Aqib Shareef Des Plaines / Apollo School; 5th Grade Julia Vandenberg Des Plaines / Apollo School ; 2nd Grade Oliver Malkezdaq Niles / Washington School; 6th Grade Prisha Modi Niles / Gemini Middle School District 63 Winter Card Contest Winners Honored All winners will receive special certificates from the Board – while Kabi will receive a frame featuring her artwork and certificate. District 63 offers a rich educational setting with a multicultural perspective to 3,500 students in the diverse communities of Des Plaines, Niles, Glenview, Park Ridge, and Morton Grove. Committed to teaching excellence that provides all students with the specific opportunities they need to succeed, the District’s five elementary schools (K-5), and Gemini Middle School (6-8), First Steps Preschool, and Expanded Learning programs foster each student’s academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth and achievement. Plainfield North HS nurse publishes, donates first children’s book
plainfield north high school star plus nurse Colleen Mcgarr (left) read her new children s book, Journey of Forest Friends to her niece s fifth grade class at Charles Reed elementary school in october 2021.
Plainfield North High School Star Plus Nurse Colleen McGarr has published her first children’s book, “Journey of Forest Friends” and plans to donate copies to all District 202 elementary schools. “Journey of Forest Friends” is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. McGarr believes that it’s never too late to accomplish one’s dreams. “I have wanted to write a children’s book since I was a teenager, but it was never the right time,” McGarr said. So, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she decided to pen and publish her first children’s book. “Everyone has a talent. If you put your goals toward something you can accomplish things, you can do it.” McGarr said. The book tells the story of two animals who must solve problems while traveling through the forest. The book teaches children that materialistic items are not as important as friendship, McGarr said. It was inspired
by her own children and the countless students she’s cared for during her nursing career. McGarr has served as the nurse for the Star Plus program at PNHS since 2017. She cares for students with a wide range of special needs. McGarr also served as the first school nurse at Freedom Elementary School from 2007-2013. When McGarr started writing her book, she took writing classes to enhance her skills. She also worked closely with her illustrator, editor, and publishing company. McGarr read the story to her niece’s fifth grade class at Charles Reed Elementary School in October to celebrate the publication of her book. “All kids are going through a rough time,” McGarr said. “I want them to know that you can start writing stories, poems, or whatever it may be, and it’ll help your stress and anxiety levels.” Her next children’s book will be about a school nurse.

Cret hill s Church of good shepherd evangelical Covenant plans lucia Fest The Swedish tradition of Santa Lucia will be observed at Church of the Good Shepherd Evangelical Covenant, 2437 Plainfield Road, Crest Hill, at approximately noon, Sunday, Dec. 12, following the 10:45 a.m. worship service. The Queen of Light will be portrayed by Abby Price, the daughter of Brad and Sabrina Price of Crest Hill. Price, 16, is an honor student at Joliet West High School, where she plays badminton and participates in the symphonic band, marching band, and Future Health Professionals Club. As a member of Church of the Good Shepherd Evangelical Covenant, she regularly attends SOJO (the high school youth group) and serves as a volunteer in the nursery and with various youth activities. Other interests include baking, water skiing, snowboarding, and babysitting. Upon graduation from high school, Price plans to attend college and will probably pursue a career in nursing. As part of the traditional Lucia Fest, the Queen of Light, also known
as Lucia, will be accompanied by attendants portrayed by children from Church of the Good Shepherd Evangelical Covenant Sunday School. Faith Zosky will sing “Santa Lucia” and Brianna Barraza, the 2019 Lucia Queen, will read the legend of Lucia. The celebration of Lucia Fest is a Swedish custom that ushers in the Christmas holiday. According to legend, Lucia was a godly girl who became engaged to a nobleman at the age of 17. Before the wedding, Lucia gave her dowry to the poor as a thank you to God for answered prayer. Her intended husband, suspicious that she was a Christian, ordered her put to death on Dec. 13, 304 A.D. Hundreds of years later, Lucia reportedly appeared in western Sweden during a famine to distribute food among starving people. She wore a long white gown and was encircled by light. Following Lucia’s visit, the days grew longer, leading people to believe she brought the end of winter and the return of light. Lucia became known as a symbol of light,
faith, and Christian charity. The traditional celebration of Lucia Fest recognizes the return of light after the dark of winter and heralds the approaching Christmas season with music and candlelight.
mitment to providing exceptional end of life care is unparalleled. Our reputation for excellence and satisfaction scores above the state and national averages say so much about our staff.” Lightways employs approximately 200 people who live and work throughout northern Illinois. “The majority of our care is provided in the patient’s home or a care facilty, so we want our staff to be close. Recently we’ve expanded into Kane, McHenry and Lake counties, and we are building teams in those areas.” Lightways is currently seeking nurses, CNAs and social workers who can: • Deftly handle a caseload of patients • Work to assure every patient has every resource he or she needs to thrive • Work independently
• Are passionate about improving the quality of life The organization offers competitive salaries, outstanding benefits, generous PTO and a uniform allowance. According to one survey respondent, “I feel that Lightways is ahead of the game in hospice care. I feel that we provide care services that other hospices do not offer. I like that we change as healthcare changes and meets the needs of our local communities.” For another employee, the importance of the work drives job satisfaction. “I love my job because I feel like I’ve done something good for someone every day.” Individuals interested in exploring opportunities with Lightways should go to lightways.org/careers.

patteRson Kenyon Palmer “Uncle Bud” Patterson, age 94, passed away peacefully under hospice care at Mease Life in Dunedin, FL on October 4, 2021. Kenyon was born April 4, 1927, in Aurora, IL to the late James and Katharine Patterson and raised on their sheep farm in Plainfield, IL. After graduating from Plainfield High School class of 1945, he joined the U.S. Navy as Fireman First Class, USNR. He received an honorable discharge in 1946 and went on to earn a BS in Engineering, class of 1950, from North Central College in Naperville while playing varsity football. In college he met his future wife Sarah E. “Sally” Patterson (nee Maier). They were married from 1950 to 2006 when Sally preceded Kenyon in death. The Patterson Family farmed 160 acres and raised two hundred head of Suffolk sheep at the north-west corner of Naperville-Plainfield Road and 95th Street in Naperville - now Brook Crossings. Kenyon and Sally were dedicated and loving parents raising five children through college and when the farm was sold in 1973, Kenyon continued to farm for other landowners in the area.
