BHS hosts annual Black History Month celebration Bill Norwood was one of the many speakers and performers to help kick-off Bolingbrook’s annual celebration of Black History Month

In an effort to celetbrate Black History Month in a positive matter while bringing awareness, Bolingbrook High School hosted its 21st annual community-wide Black History Month Celebration.

During the three-and-a-half hour presentation, there were a plethora of speakers who came to celebrate and bring knowledge to the audience.

Some of those speakers included Bill Norwood, O. Lawton Wilkerson, Karen Lawson (who portrayed Harriet Tubman), Air Force JR ROTC, Samuel Akainyah and Windy Indie.

Of the group, Norwood cap-

tured the majority of the emotion by the audience because of the length he spoke at, and the words he articulated.

Norwood is your everyday man, with the one exception that he joined the United Airlines as the company’s first AfricanAmerican pilot.

“I just wanted people to leave with if you’re a good citizen and if you work hard opportunities will fall your way and you will be successful,” Norwood said.

Norwood was born and raised in Illinois, and graduated with a degree in chemistry from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1959.

Romeoville, IDOT work to enhance pedestrian safety on Rt.53 Temporary pedestrian improvements at Route 53 and Normantown Road are tentatively planned for Summer 2019 The Edward Hospital Athletic & Event Center and the Uptown Square Development continue to bring in tens of thousands of visitors each year to the area. The attendees often utilize local businesses, including those on the east side of Route 53. Given that Route 53 is under the jurisdiction of the State of Illinois, village officials met with IDOT to seek options for improved pedestrian access along the highway.

Mayor Noak, Senator Pat McGuire, and State Representative John Connor met with IDOT regarding the need for intersection improvements at the corner of Normantown Road and Route 53. As a follow up, IDOT has notified the village that they have included

“Improving pedestrian access for this intersection has been a priority for our community,” stated Mayor Noak.

“We are grateful for the cooperation of Senator McGuire and Representative Connor along with IDOT officials in assisting us to get this project underway.”

The temporary pedestrian improvements at Route 53 and Normantown Road are tentatively planned for Summer 2019. The scope and timeline for the permanent solution will be announced by IDOT after the Phase One engineering of the intersection is concluded.

Romeoville to Launch Electronic Hazardous Household Items Pickup Starting May 1, Romeoville residents living in single family homes and townhouses will have the ability to dispose of household materials like paint, cleaners, motor oil, garden chemicals, batteries, electronics, and more.

The program is called “At Your Door Special Collection” and will be carried out by Waste Management. All a resident has to do is call Waste Management at 800-449-7587 or visit them at wmatyourdoor. com and request a pickup.

Phase One of the project in their five-year plan, which includes preliminary engineering and environmental studies. Although it may take some time for the permanent crosswalk to be included in IDOT’s construction plan, the Village of Romeoville designed a temporary solution that IDOT will include with their resurfacing project that will be completed this Summer. This temporary project will include a crosswalk and appropriate signals for the intersection. IDOT has notified Romeoville that they have approved their temporary improvements for the upcoming construction season.

A suspected bank robber was fatally shot during a fight with police Feb. 6.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m.

Bruce W. Carter Jr., 38, allegedly walked into First Midwest Bank, 1415 W. Jefferson St., and approached a teller.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Carter handed the teller a note demanding money, but did not show he was carrying any weapons. Carter “reached over the counter and into the money drawer, removing currency... and fleeing the bank on foot,” the FBI said in a news release.

The teller was not injured.

Joliet Police Deputy Chief Darrell Gavin said investigators used still photographs from surveillance video at the bank and witness statements to connect the suspect to a temporary employment office in Joliet.

“After Carter was identified, detectives went to different locations associated with his records, including a residence in the 200 block of South Des Plaines Street,” Gavin said.

About 11:20 a.m. police arrived and began speaking with Carter when a struggle began near the front porch.

“Mr. Carter was armed with a boxcutter-style razor knife during this struggle (and) the officer discharged his firearm, striking Mr. Carter,” said Ken Kroll, Chairman of the WillGrundy Major Crimes Task Force. According to Kroll, a witness statement corroborates the physical evidence showing the struggle took place. Investigators did find a boxcutter, he said.

Carter was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 11:55 a.m. An autopsy performed Feb. 7 at the Will County Coroner’s office shows he died from multiple gunshot wounds.

“As a matter of department policy and procedure, the officer was taken to Silver Cross Hospital without physical injury, and placed on administrative leave,” Kroll said. The officer’s name is being withheld pending completion of the investigation.

“Under our regulations, an officer-involved shooting has to be investigated by an outside agency, so the Major Crimes Task Force was called in,” Joliet Police Chief Al Roechner said.

“Until their investigation is complete, we cannot comment on the incident.”

Kroll said investigators will conduct interviews and review evidence before submitting a report to the Will County State’s Attorney’s office. The state’s attorney will determine if any charges are filed as a result of this incident.

Will County Court records show that Carter pleaded guilty to armed robbery in 1999 and

was sentenced to two years of probation, which was not completed satisfactorily. In 2001, the Illinois Conservation Police fined Carter $100 for fishing without a permit.

Lewis Academy of Coaches introduced On January 26, as part of Alumni Day, Lewis University introduced the inaugural class of the Lewis Academy of Coaches.

The 10-member class was announced December 10 by Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek.“ “To the best of my knowledge there was not a curriculum offered in coaching while these men attended Lewis, but their accomplishments certainly suggested otherwise and their shared experiences at Lewis University helped shape them into the finest coaches in the country,” Dr. Planek said.

“We’re so glad they will be able to join us for this day of recognition.”

JOHN BOLES John Boles, a 1970 graduate of Lewis, began his coaching career at Saint Xavier University where he spent seven seasons before moving on to the University of Louisville for two years. He joined the Chicago White Sox system as a manager of their Rookie League affiliate, the GCL White Sox in 1981.

Boles rose through the ranks eventually serving as manager for the Florida Marlins for two stints.

Following his stint as a manger, he returned to the front office working for the Los Angeles Dodgers as senior advisor for baseball operations.

In 2005, Boles joined the Seattle Mariners as special assistant to the executive vice president and general manager, serving also as a scout.

In 2012, he rejoined the Royals as a senior advisor to general manager Dayton Moore.

THOMAS DEDIN Thomas Dedin, a 1962 graduate of Lewis, succeeded Gordie Gillespie as the Flyer skipper and athletic director for two years. He led Lewis to a fourth place finish at the NAIA World Series in 1977 and to the 1978 NAIA Tournament.

Dedin went on to become the head baseball coach at the University of Illinois from 1979-1987

He then spent 12 years as the baseball coach at Regis University.

In his 23 years as a baseball coach he coached six future major leagues, two of whom spent at least a decade in the show.

TONY DELGADO Tony Delgado, a 1966 Lewis graduate, was an assistant baseball coach on Lewis’ first National Championship team in 1974.

Delgado succeeded Paul Ruddy as men’s basketball coach at Lewis in 1972 and coached the team for six seasons.

He moved onto St. Francis in 1980 after coaching stints in baseball, basketball and tennis at Illinois Tech and Lewis.

He served as Gillespie’s top assistant with the Saints until Gillespie retired in 1995.

Delgado was named his successor and led St. Francis for 10 seasons accumulating a record of 296271 and eight winning seasons.

JACK FITZGERALD Jack Fitzgerald, a 1974 graduate of Lewis, spent 17 years as the head boys’ basketball coach at Leo High School where he guided his teams to four Catholic League titles and one conference championship.

He then coached at Richards High School from 1994-2000.

While at Richards High, he recorded 20-plus wins in four of his six seasons while also securing three SICA North titles.

Fitzgerald also spent six years as an assistant coach at St. Xavier and

is now working as a scout for the Miami Heat.

ROBERT MILLER Robert “Red” Miller, a 1967 graduate of Lewis, was drafted by the Washington Senators in the ninth round of the 1966 Major League Baseball draft.

It was a draft that included future Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson.

Miller became the baseball coach at Gordon Tech (now DePaul College Prep) and guided the Rams for nearly four decades.

He was inducted in the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame in 2006 and received the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 2006.

JOHN MORRREY John Morrey, a 1970 Lewis grad-

uate, began his coaching career at Cass Junior High School as a teacher and coach of three sports.

In 1976, he joined Gillespie in establishing the baseball program at St. Francis where he served as an assistant coach as well as assistant athletic director. In 1980, Morrey became the head baseball coach at St. Xavier guiding the Cougars to a record of 574-379 in his 13 years.

He led his teams to District 20 championships in 1981, 1982 and 1988.

Morrey’s 1982 team finished fourth at the NAIA World Series and his 1988 team finished third at the NAIA World Series. He was named the NAIA’s Coach of the Year in 1988 after guiding the Cougars to a 58-25 SEE LEWIS PAGE 6

Spartans fall in playoff opener

Romeoville guard Lindsay Novak and her teammates were certain of one thing following Monday night’s season-ending 50-24 loss to Metea Valley in a Class 4A Oswego Regional quarterfinal.

They’ll be back.

The Spartans (9-19) will graduate just one player — center Monique Bradshaw — from a team that showed gradual improvement despite a roster stocked with varsity rookies, including two freshmen and seven sophomores.

“We’re planning on competing next year,” Romeville coach Julio Carrasco said. “We competed in

JOHN OSTROWSKI John Ostrowski, a 1970 Lewis graduate, took over the baseball program at Benedictine in 1973 and guided the Eagles for 43 years.

His teams went 990-742-16 (a .571 winning percentage) during his tenure, winning at least 20 games 32 times, including the last four years, and more than 25 on 16 occasions.

Benedictine won 16 conference titles and made eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

He became just the 10th coach

“I tell people that if you do what your superiors tell you to do, hang around the right crowd and prepare for everything in life then you will be successful,” Norwood said.

Carrasco was hoping the Spartans, who were seeded 18th at the Plainfield North Sectional, could pull of a playoff victory.

It wasn’t inconceivable considering they beat 16th-seeded Metea 52-43 on Jan. 19, sending the Mustangs into a six-game losing streak.

But Metea (11-17) was without 6-foot-1 senior center Tess Thompson in that game.

Thompson was on a college recruiting trip that day and her presence made a difference in the rematch.

“She’s able to swing the ball around and she played really well,” Carrasco said. “She’s a nice player but it wasn’t a 20-some-

point difference.”

Indeed, Thompson finished with eight points and eight rebounds, but her teammates put the game out of reach early.

Novak sank a 3-pointer to give Romeoville a 3-2 lead but the Spartans would go more than 11 minutes before getting their next basket.

Five different players scored for Metea during a 17-0 run that lasted into the second quarter.

Thompson wasn’t one of them.

“It didn’t help that we shot 2-for-20 in the first half,” Carrasco said. “We shoot pretty well normally. We just didn’t come out and hit anything and at that point confidence starts to lower.

“Defensively I thought we played well. Holding them to 21

points in the first half was unbelievable.”

The Spartans trailed 21-9 at the half and Metea scored the first seven points of the second half, outscoring Romeoville 13-5 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 34-14.

“I think the energy coming out was different (than the previous meeting),” Novak said. “We started off slow.

“I think we all started off slow tonight, even myself. I could have done a lot more on the offensive side.”

Novak was one of the few bright spots offensively for Romeoville.

She made both of her team’s 3-pointers and finished with a team-high eight points to go with two rebounds, an assist and a steal. And she played hard until

the end, forcing a turnover late in the fourth quarter.

“She’s a heckuva player,” Carrasco said. “She’s normally our outside shooting threat.

“She’s really worked on her game. She’s really been hustling a lot.

“We’ve got a couple things to get better like dribbling and seeing the floor better, but as a sophomore she’s doing a nice job.”

Novak thinks she can do a lot better and sees good things ahead for the Spartans.

“I see a lot of improvement and I’m really excited for our future,” Novak said. “(Nearly) the whole team is coming back, so I’m excited for the off-season (so we can) start working on getting better.”

In addition to his baseball duties, Ostrowski served as an assistant football coach at Benedictine for many years and also held the positions of assistant athletic director and acting director of athletics.

MATTHEW SENFFNER Matthew Senffner graduated from Lewis in 1966 and was the head football coach for nearly 40 years at Providence Catholic.

He finished his career with a record of 300-114-1 and guided the Celtics to nine state championships in 18 seasons and also served as the school’s athletic director.

Senffner was inducted into the inaugural Providence Catholic Green and White Hall of Fame in

2004.

He played for legendary coach Gordie Gillespie at Joliet Catholic as an offensive and defensive tackle in 1960 and 1961.

CHUCK SCHWARZ Chuck Schwarz, a 1962 graduate of Lewis, built St. Laurence High School boys basketball into powerhouse during the 1970s turning out a succession of Division I recruits.

He became the head coach at Lewis in 1978 and guided the program during its transition to Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

His 1981-82 finished 20-9 and won the school’s first GLVC title.

His teams won 20 or more games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament five straight seasons and won three GLVC titles.

He mentored two GLVC Players of the Year in Larry Tucker (198182) and Tom Niego (1985-86).

Schwarz became the Director of Athletics at Loyola University in 1987 and was there until 1999 when he announced his retirement.

PAT SULLIVAN Pat Sullivan was valedictorian for the Lewis class of 1965.

He spent 34 years at the University of St. Francis in various roles as coach, administrator and an executive.

On the basketball court, Sullivan led the Saints to a 506-505 record (a .501 winning percentage), four Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season championships, two CCAC Tournament Championships and two appearances in the NAIA National Tourna-

ment in 1994 and 1996.

He led his teams to first- or second-place finishes in the CCAC 15 times in 18 years.

More than wins, he the teacher was most proud of his 172 graduating seniors from the basketball team.

Sullivan has been inducted into seven different halls of fame at every level of competition and was named coach of the year on multiple occasions from the NAIA, CCAC and at the high school level. He also served as an assistant principal, college guidance counselor and varsity basketball coach at Providence High School.

He was the recipient of the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference’s Dr. Charles Bertram Alumni Award of Distinction.

“For those that don’t prepare and don’t listen, those are the people who don’t take advantage of opportunity.”

Taking advantage of an opportunity is exactly was Norwood did, as he served in the Air Force from 1959-1965 flying primarily the B-52.

In February 1996, having reached the mandatory retirement age of 60, Bill retired from United as a DC-10 Captain after a prosperous 31-year career.

“You have to be able to use every second of the day to your best

ability,” Norwood said. “Because once that second is gone, it’s gone for ever.”

Norwood also is a former member of the SIU Board of Trustees having served in that capacity for 27 years, and the Organization of Black Airline Pilots where he had served multi-terms as a treasurer, president and chairman of the Board.

On February 6, 1996, in honor of his achievements in aviation and education, and his 31-years of dedicated service to United Airlines, his name was painted on

a United Airlines aircraft (B-727) at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.

“It’s a great honor to be the recipient of the awards because it inspires others to try something,” Norwood said.

After retirement, Norwood has continued to be active in the community.

He was a co-organizer and an instructor for the Southern Illinois Flight Academy, a basic flight training camp for young people in the Carbondale area.

ly, are also life members of the SIU Alumni Association and the NAACP. Norwood and his family have established two scholarships for SIUC students, and an endorsement at the SIU Public Policy Institute, which has been established in Bill and Molly Norwood’s name.

“I’ve tried to be a role model for all pilots,” Norwood said. “I hope that I can be an inspiration to young African-Americans to really try and achieve their dreams in whatever they chose to do in life.”

TERRI DEAR TERRI, Yes, it would. The truth is, your mom shouldn’t have co-signed for you in the first place. There’s only one reason lenders want a co-

signer, and that’s because they’re afraid the person taking out the loan won’t be able to pay back what’s owed.

You’ll be trashing your and your mom’s credit if you don’t pay the bills on time. If she co-signed for you, and you don’t do the right thing and pay back the loans, she’ll start getting phone calls looking for the money, too. I don’t think you want to subject your

mom to the stress and hassle of collector calls or bad marks on her credit, do you?

Believe me, I understand what happened. Your mom loves you, and she wants the best for you.

She’s willing to do whatever it takes to help her daughter succeed. What I want you both to understand going forward is that the idea you have to borrow money to attend college — or do anything

else, really — is a myth. There are many ways to get a great education, and find excellent career opportunities, without borrowing a dime. Scholarships and grants are everywhere these days. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with working before and during college to help cash-flow an education, or you can begin your studies at a community college where the costs are much less.

In addition to four-year schools and community colleges, anyone looking to further their education shouldn’t ignore the possibility of trade or technical schools.

At these institutions, you can get valuable training that’s highly marketable. Not to mention completing a trade or technical school program usually takes less time and is cheaper than a bachelor’s degree.
