oakton welcomes 550 students for illinois Science olympiad
Oakton College transformed into a dynamic hub of scientific exploration by hosting over 20 schools and welcoming more than 550 students to its Des Plaines campus for the annual Illinois Science Olympiad (ISO) regional tournament, March 9.
Engaged in nearly 50 challenging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) events, students showcased their talents and passion for innovation. Four exceptional teams emerged victorious among the participants, with two hailing from Oakton’s district.
“We are thrilled to once again open our doors to the Illinois Science Olympiad here at Oakton,” remarked Gloria Liu, Oakton’s grants manager of STEAM - H and special projects. “Our commitment to our communities drives us to cultivate an atmosphere of curiosity and exploration for all who step foot on our campus.”
The journey continues for two schools in Oakton’s district, New Trier High School and Glenbrook South High School, as well as Thomas Middle School and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy. They will compete in the state tournament
at the University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign in April. The top two teams in both the middle school and high school divisions will then proudly represent Illinois at the national tournament.
Among the impressive roster of participants were over 250 students representing 10 middle schools and over 300 students representing 13 high schools. Participating schools included Old Orchard Junior High School and British International School of Chicago, and a lineup of high schools including Niles West, Maine West, Maine South and Niles North. Oakton’s esteemed faculty played an integral role in facilitating events, including Chemistry Lab, Anatomy & Physiology, Microbe Mission and Wind Power sessions.
Illinois Science Olympiad (ISO) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in a variety of science disciplines, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education of students, teachers and community coaches.
ISO tournaments epitomize rigorous academic competition, featuring various team events curated by the National Science Olympiad committee. These events strike a balance between testing participants’ subject matter expertise across various
scientific domains, honing their scientific inquiry skills, and challenging them to apply their learned knowledge and skills in real-world scenarios.

vvSD Board of education Approves Dr. Keith Wood as Superintendent
The Valley View Community Unit School District 365U Board of Education has approved the selection of Dr. Keith Wood as Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Wood’s approved contract runs through June 30, 2025.
Dr. Wood joined the VVSD staff in 2011 when he was hired as Principal for Brooks Middle School and has served in that position for the past 13 years. In 2022, the Illinois State Board of Education selected Dr. Wood as Middle School Principal of the Year and he also represented Illinois in the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Dr. Wood earned his undergraduate degree in elementary education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He continued his education by earning a master’s degree in school leadership from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1995 and then a doctoral degree in school leadership from Loyola University Chicago in 2002. Dr. Wood is also currently an Advisory Board Member and Co-Chair of the Harvard University Graduate School of Educa-
tion Principals’ Center.
Dr. Wood and his wife Angela reside in Bolingbrook, and they are the current Bolingbrook Family of the Year. He is an active member of Bolingbrook Lions Club, serves on the Board of Directors of the Valley View Educational Enrichment Foundation, and has also served as a Board Member of Heart Haven Outreach.
“I look forward to this new role and the challenge as we continue to provide quality educational experiences for our students and also continue to meet the expectations of the VVSD community,” said Dr. Wood. Dr. Wood succeeds outgoing Superintendent Rachel Kinder, Ed.S who announced her departure last week.
“The VVSD Board looks forward to working collaboratively with Dr. Wood and to continue to move VVSD forward. We expect his knowledge and understanding of Valley View’s demands and community expectations will allow for a smooth transition,” said VVSD Board of Education President
Steve QuigleyD99 recognized for community partnership with grit2
District 99 leaders Dr. Erin Ludwick, associate principal at Downers Grove North High School, and Sara Courington, associate principal at Downers Grove South High School, received the “Reaching Out and Building Bridges Award” from the Illinois Principals Association for their work with grit2, a local non-profit organization.
The IPA award recognizes those who display an outstanding effort in creating partnerships between schools, principals, associations and organizations for the betterment of all. The grit2 mission is to connect students, families and our community with resources to support mental health and wellness. Ludwick and Courington oversee student support and counseling services at their respective schools.
“Like other districts throughout the nation, the mental health of our nearly 5,000 students is a great concern in our schools following the pandemic,” said Dr. Hank Thiele, District 99’s superintendent. “Erin and Sara recognize that by partnering with grit2, we can increase the impact and level of support we can provide to our students.”
Ludwick and Courington serve on grit2’s advisory board, and have collaborated with grit2 leaders to develop innovative mental health and wellness programs, workshops and webinars covering topics such as depression, substance abuse and stress management.
“Erin and Sara have been invaluable to grit2. Their insights, expertise and thoughtfulness have brought our programming and its impact to a new level,” said Ann Cummins, grit2 Board Chair.
“Personally and professionally, they are just amazing people who truly care about their District 99 students and community. This award couldn’t be more well deserved!”
Since its creation, grit2 has hosted speakers, forums, in-school programming, mental health provider fairs and May Mental Health Awareness Month activities throughout the community.
“From my lens as principal, I see first hand the mental health struggles that our students encounter on a daily basis and the impact on academics,” said Dr. Courtney DeMent, principal at Downers Grove North High School. “Despite all of our people and programs, we always could provide more. Our work with grit2 allows us to augment our resources to realize more positive student outcomes.”
With the leadership and guidance of Ludwick and Courington, grit2 has recently created a teen advisory board. Student representatives are able to advocate about the importance of mental health to their peers, which strengthens the impact of the messages in order to improve the health of all students.
“Being a community member myself, I’ve witnessed how important this program is,” said Downers Grove South High School Principal Arwen Lyp. “I’m always amazed by the level of talent that we have in our schools, and this is evidenced by Sara and Erin every day.”
