Will County hosts regional first responder training

The Will County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) hosted a hands-on training for first responders in Monee, aimed at bringing together police, fire, and dispatch agencies to coordinate effectively on various active threat incidents.

“These trainings are critical to get all agencies on the same page and to be prepared for a wide variety of emergency situations,” said Will County EMA Director Allison Anderson. “In the early stages of a cris, when seconds matter, it’s important that first responders are working together cohesively.”

The training is part of a multi-year effort by Will County EMA to implement a more standardized response from county-wide agencies to large scale active threat incidents. The “command and control” model establishes procedures for police, fire, and dispatch officials to implement within the first few hours of an active threat incident.

Along with being trained on a unified response model, attendees participated in a hands-on implementation exercise. The training simulated how police, fire, and dispatch officials would work together in various

active threat responses. Will County EMA worked with a variety of local partners to host the training, including the Will County Sheriff’s Office, Wilmington Fire Protection District, Manhattan Fire Protection District, Minooka Fire Protection District, Monee Police Department, Shorewood Police Department, Joliet 9-1-1, and WESCOM.

“Developing a unified model for active threat incidents is crucial to a

successful response,” said Will County EMA Preparedness and Recovery Manager Chelsea Bowen. “We’re thankful for the continued attendance of agencies to our trainings, which is helping build more resilient communities throughout the county and region.”

Over 50 first responders attended the training, which included representatives from Grundy County, the Illinois Secretary of State Police,

and the Rochelle Community Consolidated District #231 in addition to Will County agencies. Will County EMA also welcomed 10 representatives from interested in adopting the “command and control” model from Boone County, Missouri.

“Will County’s Emergency Management Agency continues to provide regional and state leadership on critical public safety topics,” said Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-

Tarrant. “Bringing together officials from throughout the state and nation to share information and strategies is helping keep our communities safe.”

Will County EMA has trained over 600 first responders on the “command and control” model since its implementation. First responders interested in participating in future trainings can email ema@willcountyillinois.com.

Oakton College recognizes record number of high school students for completion of basic nurse assistant training

Oakton College celebrated a milestone achievement as 83 high school students received a Basic Nurse Assistant Training (BNAT) Certificate, May 22. The program not only awards completers early college credit but also opens the door to promising careers in healthcare. The BNAT program is part of Oakton’s Dual Credit program, with courses taught in high school classrooms by Oakton-approved high school teachers.

The graduation and pinning ceremony at Oakton’s Des Plaines campus honored BNAT completers from Maine East, Maine South, Maine West, Niles North and Niles West high schools. The event served as a symbolic welcome into the nursing profession, marking the beginning of their journey toward healthcare excellence.

“As you start the next phase of your educational journey, you already have college credit on your transcript and a credential that qualifies you for immediate work. Very impressive!” said Anne O. Brennan, Oakton’s assistant vice president of Academic Affairs & College Transitions, during the cer-

emony.

Student speakers at the event included Mary Ishak from Skokie, representing Niles Township High Schools, and Maura Lawlor from Park Ridge, representing Maine Township High Schools.

Six BNAT graduates have already committed to continuing their nursing studies at Oakton. Oakton’s Nursing Program is a top choice among the approximately 100 Illinois Board of Nursing-approved schools offering associate degrees in nursing. Ranked No. 6 and recognized as a leading associate degree in nursing program in Cook County, Oakton thoroughly prepares students for the nursing profession.

Students completing the associate in applied science (A.A.S.) in nursing at Oakton can begin practicing nursing immediately. Additionally, they will be ready to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue their bachelor’s degree through one of Oakton’s many RN-Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) transfer partnerships.

This fall, the BNAT Dual Credit program will grow as Evanston Township

High School students will join the program for the first time. Oakton offers multiple avenues for earning early college credit, including the Dual Credit and Concurrent Enrollment

Programs. Through these initiatives, students can access college-level classes and experiences, setting the stage for their academic and professional futures.

Crystal Lawns and Wallin Oaks elementary schools will get new leadership next school year.

The Board of Education at its Wednesday, May 29, 2024 regular meeting approved Marie Zlotnikov as the next principal at Wallin Oaks Elementary School and Amy Bauer as the next principal at Crystal Lawns Elementary School.

Zlotnikov is an Associate Principal at Alan B. Shepard Middle School in Deerfield.

She was a World History Summer School Instructional Coach at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire in the summer of 2019.

Zlotnikov previously taught high school history and social studies classes from 2013 to 2019.

Zlotnikov said she loves to learn new things and was interested in

the job because of District 202’s commitment to lifelong learning.

“I am excited to collaborate with teachers to create engaging learning experiences, to support students in their academic and personal growth, and to work closely with parents to ensure a strong home-school connection,” she said.

Zlotnikov’s knowledge, skills and experience made her the ideal candidate, said Dr. Scott Fink, Director of Administration and Personnel for Elementary Schools for District 202.

“Ms. Zlotnikov is an energetic leader, dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment at Wallin Oaks,” he said.

Bauer has been the Assistant Principal at Schneider Elementary

School in West Aurora since 2020.

She has eight years of experience as an elementary school assistant principal. She taught music at the Eastview Kindergarten Center in Oswego from 2011 to 2016.

Bauer said District 202 has a reputation for prioritizing student success and fostering a supportive learning environment for all.

“I was drawn to the Crystal Lawns team because of its dedication to making a real difference in students’ lives,” she said.

“I look forward to creating authentic relationships that serve our diverse community of students, educators, parents and administrators who share a common goal of providing the best possible education for every student.”

Bauer’s background and experi-

ence at the elementary level and her strong communication skills make her a natural fit for Crystal Lawns, Fink said.

“Crystal Lawns Elementary, with its rich history in the district wel-

comes a new principal committed to honoring its legacy while striving for success of every student,” he said.

Both principals will begin on July 1, 2024.
