Romeoville girl raises money for FOP By MaRK gRegoRy editorial director

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

Two decades after the September 11 attacks on New York City — a time when America was as united as it has been in recent memory — the country, on the 20-year anniversary of 9/11, is arguably as divided as it has ever been. In the midst of this — Rose Reyes, a 9-year-old Romeoville resident, took it upon herself to show that there can still be kindness and compassion shown to men and women in uniform in a time where that thinking is not on trend. After learning about 9/11 in school and what the police and fire departments in New York did that day, Rose opened a lemonade stand, that was built by her dad Art Reyes, and donated her $100 profit to Romeoville FOP Lodge 15. “We were learning about 9/11 in school and about the plane attacks and I wanted to do something nice,” Rose said. “I sold like 50 lemonades.” She then presented her check to Romeoville Officer Daniel Ponzi, whose father was a Romeoville firefighter. “I like helping people and giving back to them,” Rose said. “I don’t think her generation understands how serious it was and how it effected America as a whole,” Sheri Reyes, Rose’s mom, said of the 9/11 attacks. “These kids these days with Tik Tok and everything, they are so self absorbed and that is what I want to snap out of her — There is a whole other world out there.” It is not the first time Rose has helped the Romeoville PD. “She gave the police officers candy when the riots were happening,” Sheri said. “She appreciates the cops and firefighters and what they do. I explained to her that there are good cops and bad cops, just like there are good people and bad people and you have to reward the good people. “We try and teach her that she

is very blessed to have the things that she has and we want her to understand that you have to give back to your community or people that don’t have as much.” The Reyes’ have made an effort to not only teach Rose about helping others, but showing her how to do it. “Last year, we collected money to help people with COVID-19. We donated $300 to someone in Texas who lost their daughter who was a nurse. She had three little kids and they could not afford Christmas, so we Zelled them $300 and they turned around and showed us the gifts they bought the kids. “Recently, she helped with Feed Our Starving Children and the past few years, we have done coat drives where we pick a shelter and donate coats to the homeless.” Getting the donation from Rose was something that the FOP was pleased to see, said president Brant Hromadka, who is Deputy Chief at Romeoville Police Department. “For her to think about something like this at an early age is pretty incredible,” Hromadka said. “I think it is awesome that not only adults, but kids are seeing the importance of spreading the positive word in negative times.” He said that Rose and the Reyes family are a reflection of what he sees daily in Romeoville. “I would say that overall, Romeoville as a whole is much more supportive of us than what I see on the news. We get more support right now probably than we have in the past. I think maybe people are being more vocal about it because it is vocalized on the opposite side,” he said. “In what is the worst of times for law enforcement in the 20 years I have been doing it, any time we are on the street, people come up and give us a word of thanks or buy us a cup of coffee and it goes a long way because it is a stressful time for people in this profession. “To see a little girl that saved up

Rose Reyes, 9, presents a check for $100 from her lemonade stand to Romeoville police officer daniel ponzi. this money and wants to give it to us, we are going to remember that when we donate it on.” In fact, Hromadka said the Romeoville FOP Lodge 15 has big plans for Rose’s $100 donation. He said, his organization will to

match the $100 and then plans to pass it on to another police or fire organization in hopes that they, too, will kick in $100 and grow her donation. “It will be sort of a challenge,” Hromadka said. “We will see if we

can get her $100 up to $1,000 or even more and then we will donate that to the 9/11 Memorial Fund where it belongs.” All that because one little girl had a big idea, a huge heart and a whole lotta lemonade.

STATE

Illinois to invest over $40 million in workforce training By peTeR hancocK

Capitol News Illinois

Gov. JB Pritzker announced Thursday that the state will award more than $40 million in workforce training grants, focusing on communities hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and youth who are particularly at risk of violence. That includes $40 million in Workforce Recovery Grants that will go out in two phases over the next year, plus another $4.4 million in career training grants that have already been awarded to 20 training programs that focus on at-risk youths. Funding for both programs comes from the federal American Rescue Plan Act, or ARPA. Applications for the first round of Workforce Recovery Grants totaling $20 million opened Thursday. Information about how to apply for those grants is available on the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s website. A second round of applications is expected to open in the spring. Pritzker made the announcement

at a training center on Chicago’s west side, Revolution Workshop, which is partnering with one of the youth grant recipients, BUILD Chicago Inc. “This is yet another step in our efforts to deliver high-quality opportunities that put all of our young people on a path to a career, with a heightened focus on those that have been historically left behind,” Pritzker said. The Workforce Development Grants will be used to expand access to training, job placement and other services that prevent people from gaining employment, the administration said in a news release. Funding is also available for individuals with emergency costs for basic needs that prevent them from participating in training programs or employment. The administration expects roughly 1,500 individuals in areas disproportionately impacted by the pandemic will receive services. “We’re focusing on getting people back to work in ways that build careers that are meaningful and bring home good paying jobs for their families,”

Acting DCEO Director Sylvia Garcia said. “We are also prioritizing equity in this work and making sure everyone has access to opportunity. We’re also helping to provide support for our employer partners to make sure we’re filling the jobs that they need and thinking about what those jobs of the future are.” The youth training grants are being distributed to organizations throughout the state that provide education and training in career pathways for youth who may be at risk of dropping out of school or experiencing violence. “These investments our communities desperately need,” said Manny Ramirez, executive director of Revolution Workshop. “Because of these investments, organizations like mine and our partner BUILD Chicago and others will be able to provide real economic mobility that can truly break the cycles of poverty.” Thursday’s announcement came just days after Pritzker announced that another $327 million would be made available this year to help low-income individuals pay their utility bills and

meet other expenses. That includes the Low-Income Household Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, and the Community Services Block Grant Program, which offers expanded services to help residents pay rent, utilities, food and other household expenses, regardless of immigration status. In addition to those measures,

Pritzker also announced Thursday the formation of a new Commission on Workforce Equity and Access, which will study ways to diversify existing training programs to promote equity and inclusion across all industries. The commission will be headed by Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford and Deputy Gov. Andy Manar.

Pedestrian bridge over I-55 will link two Forest Preserve trails A pedestrian bridge installed over Interstate 55 will link two Forest Preserve District of Will County trails and provide safer passage for walkers, runners and bicyclists traveling along Black Road between Joliet and Shorewood. The bridge installation along the south side of Black Road took place between 1-3 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22. I-55 traffic was stopped twice for short durations as the two bridge sections, which total 300 feet, were set in place. The bridge over I-55 was the second pedestrian bridge to be installed along Black Road as part of the Forest Preserve’s plan. The first bridge, a 260-foot span over the DuPage River, was installed in August 2020. The two bridges and a path along Black Road will connect the DuPage River Trail in Hammel Woods to the Rock Run Greenway Trail in Rock Run Preserve. “We’ve long focused on providing access to forest preserves and linking people, places and nature,” said Ralph Schultz, the Forest Preserve’s executive director. “With the connection of these two regional trails, folks in Shorewood, Joliet, Crest Hill, Rockdale and towns farther away are linked to each other

and to additional regional and local trails, schools, colleges, libraries and places to shop, eat and explore.” Finishing touches on the project will continue, including asphalt and concrete trail connections along Black Road, retaining walls, bridge decking and traffic signal adjustments at East Frontage Road. The work is expected to be finished in October. Until

then, path users should obey the “trail closed” signs that are posted in the construction areas. Grants from the federally funded Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) and the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Program are providing 80 percent of the project’s cost, with the Forest Preserve contributing 20 percent as

a local share. ITEP is a competitive program for projects that promote alternative transportation options, including bike and pedestrian travel. And CMAQ is designed to improve air quality and mitigate congestion. The Forest Preserve has been planning the project since 1999 but did not begin to receive grant funding until 2014 and 2015.
