Downers Grove’s Callie Thomas : A member of Iowa’s 2021 Homecoming Court Callie Thomas of Downers Grove, IL is one of 12 University of Iowa students named to the 2021 Homecoming Court. Thomas is a senior majoring in elementary education. The members of the Court represent a cross-section of the academic offerings available at Iowa with majors ranging from marketing and journalism to neuroscience computer science, theatre arts, elementary education, business analytics and music. To be eligible for the Homecoming Court, students must be currently enrolled at Iowa and have attained senior status (90 or more semester hours completed). Graduate students are also eligible. Applicants must also have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00. What is your favorite memory from the University of Iowa? My favorite memory from the University of Iowa would have to be my very first family weekend. I am very close to my family, so going for a couple of months at the beginning of my Freshman year without them was very challenging. I remember the moment that I saw my parents and my brother for the first time, and the excitement and peace that I felt finally having them there with me. I got to “show off” Iowa to my favorite people, and I got to introduce them to all of the traditions and people that make our school so amazing. From seeing my brother tear up during his first “wave,” to grabbing grilled cheese at Marco’s as our first family dinner in 2 months, I loved the pride that I felt representing our university to my family!

Cook County hosts largest online chess competition for incarcerated individuals
Host team places 3rd in its division
The Cook County Jail’s Chess Team finished 3rd in its division during the championship round of the largest international chess competition for detained individuals, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced. Hosted by Cook County Jail and sanctioned by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners featured 41 teams from jails and prisons in 30 countries. The Cook County Jail team finished second in group play in the first day of the competition on Wednesday and was one of twelve teams to advance to Thursday’s championship round. During Thursday’s play, teams were divided into two groups of 6 teams. Cook County finished in 3rd place in its division, which was won by a team from Zimbabwe. Mongolia was the winner of the other division, and during a match early Friday morning, Mongolia defeated Zimbabwe to become the overall winner. “I’ve always been a fan of chess, and I know how much time and effort it takes to play at the level our team exhibited this week,” Sheriff Dart said. “Our team should be incredibly proud of their accomplishment, and for the strong foundation they have built for future international competitions.” This was the sixth international competition that the Cook County Jail team has participated in since the chess program was launched in 2012. Since then, the program has hosted numerous chess dig-
nitaries over the years, including chess grandmaster Anatoly Karpov. In March 2020, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office signed an agreement with FIDE – the governing body of international chess competition – formalizing the organization’s logistical support of future international online matches through their Social Service Commission. In turn, Cook County Jail will serve as the hub for FIDE-led International Chess for Freedom events. Since its inception, approximately 1,200 individuals have participated in the chess program while in custody at the Jail. Program participants practice week-
ly, and the eight players who represented Cook County Jail in this tournament were chosen based on skill. “It is gratifying to see a program that started at Cook County Jail expand to include literally dozens of countries and hundreds of players from all around the world, and we are thankful for the partnership we have with FIDE,” Sheriff Dart said. “Programs like this are so important because studies show they can make jails and prisons safer places overall. This competition not only serves that goal, but also enables people from all over the world to share an experience they enjoy.”

Pritzkers made $5 million last year – not including family trust

Gov. JB Pritzker’s campaign released summary documents of his 2020 tax returns Friday, which showed the first family reporting $5.14 million in adjusted gross income, all from taxable interest and dividends. The campaign released seven pages summarizing the governor’s and first lady MK Pritzker’s returns, which were prepared by Deloitte Tax LLP. It did not release tax returns from trusts benefitting Illinois’ first family, stating in an email only the amount the trusts paid in taxes. “According to the information provided by the trustees, in 2020, trusts benefitting JB Pritzker paid $16.3 million in Illinois taxes and $69.6 million
in federal taxes,” the campaign said in an email. The Pritzkers claimed $2.86 million in standard and itemized deductions, according to their federal 1040 form, although the campaign did not release the Schedule A form outlining the breakdown of those deductions. The campaign did say in an email the Pritzkers made $2.8 million in personal charitable donations last year. Other deductions that can be claimed on a Schedule A form include medical and dental expenses, state and local real estate and personal property taxes, mortgage interest paid, casualty and theft losses and more. A campaign spokesperson said it would not be releasing the full Schedule A form or any information other
than the summaries but did not give a reason why. The spokesperson said the summaries are what the governor
has always released since he launched his first-term candidacy. The Pritzkers also claimed $83,681 in qualified business income deductions, although the campaign did not release the full 8995 form which outlines those deductions. The tax return summary document also showed the Pritzkers claimed a $142,046 foreign tax credit, although it did not include any corresponding documentation. That made for a federal taxable income of $2.2 million, on which the Pritzkers paid $529,104 in total federal taxes, according to the partial returns. The Pritzkers paid $230,643 in Illinois taxes at the state’s flat 4.95 percent rate. That was after a $21,702 deduc-
tion for income taxes paid in another state. Forbes estimates Pritzker, who is heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune, to have a net worth of $3.6 billion. The $5.14 million in total income is up from the previous year, but far below the Pritzkers’ 2017 reported pre-governorship income of approximately $55 million, as reported by the Associated Press at the time. In 2019, the Pritzkers reported $2.57 million in total income and $1.42 million in taxable income federally. In 2018, the family reported more than $6 million in adjusted gross income and $5.5 million in federal taxable income.

Tips for home buyers during a seller’s market A combination of factors, including low interest rates and a pandemicdriven decision by many city dwellers to look for houses in the suburbs, has created a housing boom for much of 2020 and 2021. That boom has created an undeniable seller’s market in real estate. Just what is a seller’s market? The financial resource Investopedia defines it as a marketplace in which there are fewer goods for sale than there are interested buyers, giving sellers the ability to dictate prices. Since mid2020, there has been an extremely low inventory of homes for sale but a very high interest among purchasing parties. Data from the National Association of Realtors indicated that, by the end of February 2021, housing inventory fell to a record low of 1.02 million units. These factors have led to a surge in competition from buyers, including bidding wars on homes and all-cash offers to entice sellers. In December 2020, the median listing prices for single-family homes shot up 13.4 per-
cent from the same time the previous year, according to Realtor.com, and it hasn’t slowed down much since. Jeffrey Mezger, a 40-year veteran of the real estate industry and CEO of KB Home, says it’s the best seller’s housing market he’s seen in his career. So where does this leave buyers interested in relocating? Here are some tips. • Consider areas with slower overall price growth. Experts say the southern and midwestern United States offer the best value for home shoppers because of their meager price growth. ClearCapital, which tracks housing values, says San Antonio, St. Louis and the Dallas/Fort Worth areas experienced the least price appreciation from 2019 into 2020. • Get preapproval or have your funds ready. Speed is the way to go if a buyer is interested in a property and wants to make an offer. Real estate professionals say buyers should be “offer ready,” which means having a mortgage preapproval letter or proof of funds for a down payment ready to
go. Failure to have funds in check can slow down the process or compel sellers to reject an offer. • Work with a real estate agent. These are complicated times and it pays for buyers to have a professional working in their corner. A real estate agent uses his or her knowledge to make a timely offer and negotiate on the buyer’s behalf. He or she also will provide insight into specific neighbor-
hoods, amenities and school districts. • Eliminate certain contingencies from the equation. Contingencies are factors that must be met before a sale can go through, according to the relocation site Moving.com. A common contingency is the need to sell one’s current home before closing on another. Asking for extended closing periods or certain home repairs are some additional contingencies that
can make buyers less attractive to sellers. • Make it personal. Buyers can offer a personalized note with the offer that may connect with the seller emotionally and set one them apart from others who have made similar offers. Buying in a seller’s market can be challenging. But some strategies can set buyers apart from the pack.

Pros and cons of public and private schools Parents may have a number of options when choosing schools for their children. Public schools are responsible for educating millions of youngsters every day, though private schools also may make great options for certain students. Families must weigh the pros and cons of schooling decisions carefully to find the best fit, as school helps set the foundation for life ahead. Private schools While most people think of religion when they consider private schools, many such schools in the United States are not affiliated with a religious organization. According to data from Niche, more than 30 percent of the roughly 25,000 private PreK-12 schools in the United States are not based in religious education. Private schools can benefit kids in various ways. Each private school follows its own direction, which means there can be varied educational goals and approaches.
Private schools have more flexibility than public schools in regard to their curriculum, as they are not bound by state or federal mandates. This can be a boon to a student who learns in a specific way. Private schools tend to have small class sizes and student bodies, which can make for individualized attention. The most prominent drawback for private schools is the cost. Many private schools cost thousands of dollars per year, and such costs may not include uniforms and supplies. Another potential con is some private schools simply cannot offer the same vast level of options as a public school. Through taxpayer funding, public schools may be able to bring in more resources and offer a greater array of classes. Public schools Public schools are often a natural choice because they are free to attend. With a more varied curriculum and greater propensity to offer
more after-school activities than smaller schools, public schools can be a great draw. Plus, children who attend local schools may feel more in touch with the community and take pride in partaking in the town or city’s traditions. Enrollment is often considered a downside to public schools. Many public schools have a higher teacher-to-student ratio than private schools. This may lead to a “lost in the crowd” feeling for students who may otherwise benefit from more individualized attention. What’s more, because public schools are bound by set curriculums, teachers may not have the same flexibility in what or how they can teach as their colleagues who teach at private schools. There are other pros and cons to public and private schools that families can work through together. Ultimately, parents and their children should work to find the best match for their needs.
