plainfield tornado, 30 years later

Editor’s Note: These are stories from the 20-year anniversary edition in August, 2000

It was over in minutes, but (three) decades later, its impact is still being felt. The strongest and deadliest tornado in Will County history killed 29 people and injured more than 350. It leveled schools, homes and businesses, and touched off a new chapter in Plainfield history. Starting off as a super cell thunderstorm, the tornado’s path of destruction began when a tornado was spotted in Pecatonica, near Rockford. The twister first touched down in Aurora, overturning small planes at a municipal airport before ripping through a shopping center on Route 34 near Oswego. At about 3:30 p.m., it began its more than seven-mile path through Will County, touching down in the Wheatland Plains subdivision near the Kendall County line at 127th Street. There, it destroyed more than 50 homes, but the devastation was only beginning. The storm roared through farmland near Route 30 and 143rd Street, sweeping

cars into a nearby cornfield and leveling houses and barns. The storm also destroyed what was left of the old Electric Park near the DuPage River, flattening the aging buildings at what was once a resort. It moved on to James Street, turning homes to rubble before destroying Plainfield High School on Fort Beggs Drive and killing a teacher and a custodian. Another victim, the wife of a custodian, died at the nearby district administration center. In what many called a miracle, more than 150 student athletes and coaches at the school survived, taking cover in the hallways outside of the main gym. Homes to the east of the high school and stores in the Plainfield Shopping Plaza on Route 59 were destroyed. The twister headed south on Route 59, severely damaging St. Mary Immaculate Catholic church and school, killing the principal and a music teacher . A man was also killed in the church parking lot. The storm continued southeast, virtually wiping out the Peerless

Estates and Lily Cache subdivisions before crossing I-55 and tearing through the Crystal Lawns Annex subdivision in Joliet. Grand Prairie Elementary School and the Plainfield library branch it housed were severely damaged by the storm. Homes in the Warwick subdivision near Essington and Caton Farm Road were also destroyed. The twister finished its path of destruction in Crest Hill, leveling the Cresthill Lakes apartment complex and killing nine residents. Working together But it wasn’t the devastation changed the town forever. It was the way the community came together to help one another. “It’s amazing how people helped each other,” said Village of Plainfield trustee Larry Kachel, whose brother, James, died of injuries sustained in the tornado. “People working together is what brought us all together.” Help poured in not just from surrounding communities, but also from around the country. Signs sprung up around the

‘30 Years’ from page 2 village, whether stuck into the ground or painted on the side of damaged buildings: “Thank you, volunteers.” The Red Cross and the Salvation Army worked to provide basic essentials to residents who lost everything. Restaurants and businesses provided free, hot meals to people who no longer had a home, never mind a kitchen, of their own. In a letter to The Enterprise, one woman wrote to express her gratitude to the volunteers who aided her brother and his wife after their home was damaged. “These people could not do enough to make sure my brother and his wife were taken care of,” she wrote. “These volunteers would make us all smile and tell us their prayers were with us and they’d tell my mother they wished they could do more … We don’t know their names personally, but to each and every volunteer, I would like to say a great big thank you!” In the days and weeks that followed, the cleanup began. Plainfield students also headed back to school, with PHS beginning

the 1990-1991 school year in the just-vacated Joliet Catholic High School building and Grand Prairie students attending classes in mobile units. Rebuilding the community wasn’t easy, and it took years. But it changed the face of Plainfield forever.

Since the 1990s, small-town Plainfield has become a bustling suburb. After the storm, said former resident Roy Taylor, everyone knew the name of Plainfield. “It definitely put Plainfield on the map,” he said.

Dave Says: Put needs before wants when saving dear dave, My wife and I are on Baby Step 2 of your plan. About eight months ago she gave birth to our second child, and now she would like to have a mommy makeover. I want her to be comfortable and feel good about herself, but those procedures can be really expensive. I don’t know how to fit that in with trying to pay off debt and get control of our money. What do you think?

Dear Greg,

Greg

Basically, this kind of cosmetic surgery isn’t an emergency. It’s a desire. It can, in many cases, be a valid and reasonable desire. But if you guys

dearrachel,

are serious about getting out of debt and gaining control of your finances, I’d advise waiting until after Baby Step 3 to make this happen. At that point, you’ll have paid off all your debt— except for your home—and you’ll have a fully funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in the bank. Going on vacation isn’t a need, it’s a want. Buying a new couch isn’t a need, it’s a want. I know you love your wife, and you want her to be happy and feel good about herself. But right now, this is a want. If it were a medical procedure required to save her life, it would be an emergency—a need. In a case like that, you’d stop what you’re

doing right now and address the issue. This may be something you both agree is a valid expense. If it’s something you’ve talked through together, and something you both want, that’s fine. It’s a reasonable goal under the circumstances. But I would wait until after you’re out of debt and you have your emergency fund in place. Being out of debt will make it so much easier to save up and take care of any out-of-pocket expenses you might have to pay. All in all, it’s money well spent to help your wife look and feel like herself again. Just do it at the proper time where your finances are concerned!

I’m single, and I’ll be a pilot in the military for the next 10 years. I’m also debt-free, have a fully funded emergency fund, and I’m saving 15% of my income for retirement. After my military days are over, I plan to work as a commercial pilot. I’ve done the math, and I have about $20,000 a year to give, have fun with and build wealth. My question is about wealth building. When it comes to rental properties, I know you don’t like the idea of being a long-distance landlord. Since I’m in the military, there’s a good chance I’ll move around a bit. What should I do?

First, thank you for your service to our country. And, wow! You’re in a tremendous position financially and career-wise. You’ve got a great future ahead of you as a pilot in the military and after, plus you’ve followed my plan item by item. You’ve got so many options, and you can make a difference in your community and in the lives around you right now by giving. When it comes to wealth building, I hope you’ve already taken advantage of the TSP, or Thrift Savings Plan, which is kind of the military version of the 401(k). For wealth building beyond that, I’d get with a good investment pro—one with the heart of a teacher—and dive into some growth stock mutual funds. You could have a lot of money piled up just by the end of your military career. Who knows? You may even be able to buy a nice home with cash when you leave the service. Beyond that, you may be able to settle into some real estate and pay cash for those investments. You are one cool, smart lady, Rachel. Congratulations on setting yourself up for a wonderful life—one where you can live and give like no one else!
