More libraries to offer curbside pick-up White oak library district rolls out plans for children s summer reading program

by Mark gregory editorial director

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com While some local libraries have been offering some type of service to get books into the hands of their members, more are taking up the

trend as Illinois moves into Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois plan. The Downers Grove Public Library is starting its Curbside Pickup service on Wednesday, May 20. Initiating Curbside Pickup is the next step in the library’s phased reopening plan.

Shorewood, Lisle and Downers Grove began offering drivethrough and curbside earlier in May and beginning June 1, both branches of the Joliet Library and the White Oak Library District, which involves Romeoville, Crest Hill and Lockport, will begin to offer check-out services June 1. Joliet Public Library will be offering contactless entryway pick up at the Ottawa Street Branch and drive thru pick up at the Black Road Branch. Hours are from 9 am until 9 pm Monday through Thursday and Friday and Saturday from 9am until 5 pm. Patrons can contact the library in advance by phone at 815-7402660, or visit the online library catalog at jolietlibrary.org and place a request for pickup of library materials. Patrons will be contacted when

items are ready. The contactless entryway pick up at the Ottawa Street Branch will be located in the Ottawa Street entrance, and facial masks or coverings will be required for service. White Oak will offer the same deal as Joliet, allowing patrons to get books through a drive-up, contactless service where the employees are taking all the necessary precautions. White Oak Director Scott Pointon said also that the 2020 Summer Reading Challenge for Children will begin Monday, June 15 and runs through July 31. Children will be encouraged to read and track their time reading, but prizes will be distributed only upon finishing. All prizes will be bagged. “As a matter of fact, the final prize is a sport bag with fun little prizes inside,” Pointon said. “And

of course a book, which we will choose for each child. There will be no hands-on activities in the department through the end of summer. Because the safety of our families and of our staff is our biggest concern, we are giving parents the option of either a no-touch or a low touch Summer Reading Challenge. When you register online at home or in the library, you will be given the option of choosing either a no-touch or a low-touch option. No-touch will consist of all curbside services, including delivery of the log and 10 books per child checked out for based on their reading interests. They will be delivered to your vehicle at curbside. Low-touch will take place in the library with safety restrictions, social distancing, and face covering for everyone older than two-yearsold. Patrons can switch their choice at any time. At registration, choose the one you will most probably start with. With either option, you can stop by the library (curbside or inhouse) as frequently as you like. All materials will be quarantined for at least five days before being shelved or chosen for you child. The online registration link will be available on Monday, June 15, as well as at the library. For more information about this, please call the children’sservices department starting June 8.
