FORWARD Friends of the Gifted survived a volunteer shortage to continue offering enrichment classes to area students By Jonathan Samples Staff Reporter
A
bout a year ago, it looked as though the Downers Grove Friends of the Gifted and Talented would have to make a tough decision. The 30-year-old organization, a parent-led effort to support gifted education in District 58, could not muster enough of its most important resource: volunteers. “There was an issue of how do you get parents involved, because we need parents to volunteer,” said Jamie Henderson, president and 10-year member of Friends. “We put up a sign that said, ‘Thanks for participating, this is the end.’” That sign went up during the end of last winter’s session of Super Saturday, a five-week enrichment program put on by Friends that is open to all students in kindergarten through eighth grade. To Henderson’s surprise, a number of parents read the sign and responded to the call.
A petition was circulated as a last-ditch effort to save the organization, and Henderson said it quickly got 25 volunteers. A year later, he said Friends is running strong. Parent participation is up, and efforts are being made to increase membership and make it more appealing to parents. That appeal will come in the form of guest speakers for parents and advanced notice on registration for Super Saturdays.

Friends to All Students The main goal of Friends, known by the acronym FRoG, is to make sure there are opportunities for the academically gifted students within the district. It does this by working with District 58 to develop challenging curriculum and by creating a sense of community among accelerated students and their families. However, one of Friends’ main programs, Super Saturdays, expands their efforts for enrichment beyond the scope of the academically gifted to See FRoG, page 4

Residents oppose senior housing plan Village votes to postpone a decision on supported living facility until Feb. 25 By Jonathan Samples Staff Reporter
The Downers Grove Plan Commission voted to postpone a decision regarding a proposed sheltered care facility near 63rd and Main streets until the project’s petitioners could gather more information. A 7-1 vote in favor of revisiting the issue at the Feb. 25 meeting came after nearly five hours of testimony from supporters and opponents of the proposed
project during the Jan. 28 meeting. “I’d like to make a motion that the meeting of tonight’s Plan Commission be postponed until date certain,” Plan Commission member Ronald Waechtler said. “At that time public participation will be closed; it’s a matter of record now. The petitioner will then be in a position to answer the questions that have been posed. The Plan Commission will then deliberate and make their decision.”
That motion came after dozens of residents took advantage of the public comment portion of the Jan. 28 meeting to voice their opposition to the proposed senior living facility, sited between Main Street and Fairmount Avenue on 63rd Street. The proposed sheltered care facility would be authorized under the State of Illinois Supportive Living Facility program, which provides long-term residence options for senior citizens who need extra help with their day-today lives but do not require fulltime nursing assistance. Delta Development of Downers Grove had previously looked into two alternate sites for the SLF before settling on the 63rd Street location. Michael Fiandaca, president of Delta Development, said the process of obtaining a state SLF license is not easy, and that Downers Grove needs this type of senior housing. “There are only three licensed facilities like this in DuPage County, and they all have waiting lists,” he said. “This is the missing link between an independent and a nursing home. The only step for

people who need another level of care is a nursing home, if they can’t afford assisted living.” Fiandaca said the only difference between a SLF and an assisted living facility, which can cost several thousand dollars a month, is that the state helps subsidize payments. A previous license obtained for the village was rescinded by the state due to inactivity, and Fiandaca was concerned of a similar outcome if a decision on the project weren’t reached soon. He said his company would partner with a tax equity purchase investor at a proportion of 2 percent and 98 percent, respectively, to fund the project.
Prior to Monday’s meeting, village staff recommended moving forward on the proposal after a village report determined the facility would not adversely affect surrounding infrastructure, traffic patterns, light and air, or safety. The village report also found that the planned development “is an allowable special use in the R-1 and R-3 zoning districts.” “The plan recognizes the need for additional senior living facilities in the community,” Planning Manager Jeff O’Brien said.“Sheltered cared facilities and churches are already allowable special uses in the single family zoning district … Based on this, staff is recommending approval of the development.” Representatives of the project’s architectural team, senior care management, and various consultants retained by Delta Development to look into traffic safety and property assessment echoed those findings during the meeting.
Unwilling to budge Residents cited the nonresidential character of the project,a threat to property values, and technical concerns related to the buildings construction and maintenance as their primary objections. “This doesn’t belong in our neighborhood,” said Kenneth Horonzy, a Downers Grove resident who lives on 63rd Street near the proposed facility.“This is a three-story building that doesn’t belong there. I don’t doubt the use of this facility, but what you need to do is find another site and build a building twice this size.” Fear that the building would See SENIORS, page 3
Green light go, RedSpeed no Village expected to end photo enforcement program at Naperville and Cass By Jonathan Samples Staff Reporter
At press time, the Village Board had not yet voted on the renewal agreement. A vote was expected at their Feb. 4 meeting. For the updated story, visit www. buglenewspapers.com. TheWestmontVillage Board was unanimous in their sentiment not to renew an agreement between the village and RedSpeed Illinois, a provider of automated red light and speed photo enforcement programs. During the Jan. 31 Committee of the Whole Meeting, village trustees offered a bevy of reasons for their disapproval of the current agreement, which is set to expire March 2. Some of those reasons were a lack of benefits to
the community and public image concerns created by the cameras’ location. “We’re trying to make the downtown more enticing,” said Trustee Bob Scott. “How are we supposed to sell our downtown if that’s the first thing they see on Cass? “If we can’t put it at 63rd and Cass, which is probably the worst intersection in the community, I think it’s time to go.” Westmont Police Chief Thomas Mulhearn said the 63rd and Cass intersection is controlled by DuPage County and out of the village’s jurisdiction. He also presented a number of statistics concerning the current location of the red light cameras at Naperville Road and Cass Avenue. This is the only intersection under the village’s jurisdiction

with a red light camera. The agreement with RedSpeed began March 2, 2009, and the available statistics run through that date and December 2012. In that time, Mulhearn said officers viewed a total of 21,642 suspected violations. Of those, 5,064, or 23.4 percent, were approved violations and 16,573, or 76.5 percent were rejected by officers as not meeting the department judgment standard for violation. “That standard is basically, the officers who review these videos view them as if they were to view the violation in person would they issue a citation,” Mulhearn said. “That’s the standard that we use.” The village has received $141,890 in fines in that span of time, and spent $32,962 to administer the program. There currently $16,860 in unpaid fines. Trustee Patricia Klebenow said the excessive number of See RED LIGHT, page 4
diminish property values was a major concern among the majority of residents, who declared their unwillingness to compromise in a series of passionate public comments. Beth Wesolowski, who has lived in Downers Grove for 25 years, said the proposed facility contradicts the village’s comprehensive plan and compromises the character of the surrounding residential community. “I’m here this evening to make sure my neighborhood isn’t ruined by this supported living facility,” Wesolowski said. “Delta Development has really been trying to flatter us with this facility. This isn’t about enhancing our community and neighborhood. What it is about is their own personal financial gain.” Other residents questioned the validity of a traffic report done on behalf of Delta Development and were worried that additional traffic from

the SLF would worsen already dangerous driving conditions in the area. “The report said that it is not a high-accident location,” Rex Howard said. “When I go to mow my lawn, I have to pick up automobile parts. It is a hightraffic, high-accident area.” Several members of First Christian Church of Downers Grove, which is next door to the proposed SLF, welcomed the project as a stimulus to the community and their congregation. “This project will be a benefit to Downers Grove and the surrounding community for years to come,” said Jim McNamara, vice chair of First Christian Church. “As a congregation, we are strongly in favor of allowing this facility.” First Christian Church agreed to sell a portion of its land to Delta. The project’s designers and members of the church said the shared lot would reflect a campus design, where residents of the senior community could benefit from the church’s ministry. jsamples@buglenewspapers.com

FRoG Continued from page 1 include students of all abilities. For more than 20 years, students from District 58 and surrounding areas have benefited from these classes, which look to engage students in a manner not typically used in the classroom. O’Neill fifth-grader Jessica Wright has been involved in Super Saturday classes for five years. She and her mother Lisa say they like the classes because they allow Jessica to explore her interests in subjects she might not have access to in school. “We like it because it’s different, and she likes to try different things,” said Lisa. Henderson said a major benefit of Super Saturdays is that it allows kids to apply elements of their classroom curriculum to practical and artistic projects undertaken in the Saturday classes. Just ask Jessica, whose interest in cooking attracted her to two classes during the current session. ““They’re fun activities to do on the weekend instead of

playing video games,” she said.“I mostly like classes with food.” During the current session of Super Saturday, students are offered a variety of options from art and robotics classes to Codes and Ciphers, which teaches tips and secrets of making and breaking many types of codes. The sessions run for five weeks, and students can choose up to three classes, which run in one of three, 50-minute time slots between 9 a.m. and noon. Although Friends works closely with District 58—Super Saturday classes are held at
the O’Neill Middle School, for instance—Henderson said the program is not bound by state standards. This, he said, allows instructors to go beyond the standard curriculum to challenge students and offer classes they can have fun with. Additionally, Super Saturday classes are able to avoid a word most K-8 students dread: homework. District 58 spokesperson Jennifer Waldorf said the relationship between Friends and the district is mutually beneficial. “Friends of the Gifted continues
to be a wonderful partner in education to District 58,” she said. “We are so appreciative of this organization for their support of our students and families, including their Saturday learning opportunities, chess tournament for students, and decades of co-sponsorship of our highly successful annual science fair.” Ann Muniz, a coordinator for Super Saturday, said instructors for the classes range from teachers within the district to members of the community who simply wish to share their expertise. Despite receiving a small stipend for their time, most of the instructors are not in it for the money. That allows Super Saturday to keep prices low. “We pay squat, we charge squat, but they do it because they love teaching,” Muniz said of the instructors. Registration is closed for the current session of Super Saturday, which runs from Jan. 26 through Feb. 23. For more information about future Super Saturday sessions or to become a member of Friends, visit www. dgfrog.org.

Continued from page 3 suspected violations captured by the cameras ultimately rejected proves the cameras are unnecessary. “You’d think [RedSpeed] would by now be a bit pickier with the videos they send us, knowing what we’re going to issue tickets for,” she said.“They haven’t shown they can bring down the total amount of suspected violations, and we’re rejecting the majority of them.” Klbenow said the intersection, which had only four accidents in the year prior to the cameras’ installation, would be best served by a “no turn on red” sign. “I’d rather just see some signs up telling people there’s no turn on red, and you’re just going to have to sit and wait for the light,” she said. The Village Board is expected to vote against the renewal agreement during its Feb. 4 meeting. At press time, that meeting had not yet occurred.

District 99 students Woodridge schools earn all-state honors earn high marks At North High School and South High School, both in Downers Grove, 21 student musicians earned All-State Honors in the 2012-13 Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Band, Choir, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Composer Showcase, and Future Music Educators Symposium. Three students—junior cellist Andrew Molina, senior pianist Ian Williams and senior trombonist Josiah Williams—all of South High, received first chair in the state. Performance auditions were held last October at Carl Sandburg High School; musical compositions were evaluated by professional musicians and composers from across the country. “This is a tremendous honor for these students,” said Glenn Williams, Fine Arts Department
chairman at South High. “All-State selection represents the pinnacle of musical achievement for a high school student musician. We are very proud of the continued success of our student musicians at the All-State level.” Brayer Teague, Fine Arts Department chair at North High added, “We are really thrilled for these students and their families. Many people helped these students achieve this success, beginning with their very first elementary school music teachers and extending to their private-lessons teachers today. North High was very proud to have these incredible musicians representing District 99 at the All-State level.” The All-State Band, Choir, Orchestra and Jazz Band groups performed at the Peoria Civic Center Jan. 25 and 26.
William F. Murphy School and Edgewood School have once again been recognized for their continued academic excellence. The Illinois State Board of Education and Northern Illinois University announced Jan. 28 the Illinois Honor Roll, the state’s annual recognition program based on the previous spring’s state standardized tests and demographic information. William F. Murphy School is one of just 15 schools in the state to receive both the Academic Excellence Award and Spotlight School Award. The Academic Excellence Award recognizes schools that have sustained high performance over at least three years, and the Spotlight School Award recognizes high-poverty, highperforming schools that are beating the odds by overcoming the achievement gap. “Murphy staff members are very pleased to receive the Academic Excellence Award and the Spotlight School Award again this year. Receiving both of these awards for two consecutive years is an honor. Murphy School is dedicated to student achievement in academics, supported each day by staff and parents,” Murphy School Principal Susan Futterer said. Edgewood School received the Spotlight School Award. “Edgewood staff works collaboratively at all grades to ensure that students are positively motivated as learners. We strive for a supportive balance by fostering a caring school community, as well as
focusing on students’ growth toward academic goals. We are very proud of our students’ progress and are pleased to be recognized again on the Illinois State’s Honor Roll as a Spotlight School,” Edgewood School Principal Tanya Hughes said. Cathy Skinner, superintendent of schools in Woodridge School District 68, added, “Woodridge School District 68 is very proud of these accomplishments. Principals Sue Futterer and Tanya Hughes, as well as the teachers and staff at Murphy and Edgewood Schools are dedicated to student success, and that dedication was recognized by the state today.” State Board of Education Chairman Gery J. Chico praised the commitment of schools that achieve these awards. “These Honor Roll schools once again show us that rigorous standards, great instruction and lots of hard work improve student performance,” Chico said. “Behind each school’s success is an untold story of extraordinary passion and dedication on behalf of administrators, teachers, parents and students. We commend each school and hope local community members will also celebrate their local schools’ success.” Woodridge School District 68 serves nearly 3,000 students in grades K-8 by providing a comprehensive educational foundation for all children in a safe, caring environment, preparing them to be productive, responsible, and successful members of society.

H o ro s c o p e s You can’t hit the ball every time at bat. There is always someone keeping score and adding up the averages. In the week to come, don’t get out of sorts just because your performance is being scrutinized.
Respect and trust are the two easiest things to lose and the hardest things to get back. In the upcoming week, make an extra effort to remain ethical especially when it is just a case of “business as usual.”
Remember to honor the golden rule. In the upcoming week, treat others with the same respect and consideration you would like in return. Get bills paid today to avoid mix-ups later in the week.
Being generous attracts prosperity. Sound business practices of the past may reward you in the present. It is a fine week for smart financial maneuvering or to make your mark at community gatherings.
You mean business. Start the week off right by attending to your personal affairs with the same level of skill and serious attention to detail you would provide to an employer. Pay attention to your finances.
All for one, and one for all. People will be more reasonable and willing to look optimistically at any plan on the table if everyone benefits. In the week ahead, be sure to include all members of a group.
Tune up your instrument before a performance. Since “practice makes perfect,” don’t be surprised if someone critiques your presentation or demands that you try just a little harder in the week ahead.
You will never become poor by giving. In the week to come, don’t be stingy about giving to charities, giving of yourself or giving someone the benefit of the doubt. Accept invitations to group functions.
You can never be too rich or too thin. Start to watch your diet this week. Recent overindulgences may make you feel guilty or awkward. Make sensible changes and deny yourself a treat.
Rather than mixing business with pleasure, business can be a pleasure. Your financial acumen gets high marks. Be sure that whatever you endorse holds benefits for everyone in the week ahead.
Keep a rabbit’s foot handy. A positive outlook and faith in your fellow man could be rewarded with good fortune this week. It is the deeds and not the intentions that make the world go around.
Flipping a coin and choosing heads or tails is not the solution. Everything will become clear in the week ahead and you will be able to act from moral certainty rather than trusting to dumb luck.

Lisle lines up big win over Westmont By Mike Sandrolini Sports Reporter
Lisle and Westmont fans who gathered inside Lisle’s North Gym for last Friday’s I-8 faceoff between the two rivals were anticipating a barn-burner. And they got one. There wasn’t any last-second drama similar to the two teams’ meeting the week before in which Jean Pietrzak converted a layup at the buzzer that lifted Westmont to a 41-39 win in the semifinals of the I-8 tourney. But there were plenty of intrigue as the Lions spent the last 2:22 of the game at the free throw line sealing up a 53-49 victory over the Sentinels. Fifteen of the Lions’ 19 fourthquarter points—and their last 10 of the quarter—came at the line. Lamont Ross (team-high 16 points), Cody Monson (15), Dawon Burrell (11) and Jonny Parrillo combined for those 10 free throws. They went 15 of 19 from the stripe in the period. Needless to say, victory was sweet for the Lions on their home court vs. their chief I-8 nemesis. “It feels really good,” Monson said.“We came out with intensity, kept it up. That’s all it was. We didn’t keep the intensity up the last game.” “Every win’s a nice win,” said Lisle coach Mark LaScala, “but when you’re conference rivals and a big crowd at home and the fact that they got us in the conference tournament on a buzzer-beater, for the kids it feels really nice. “It’s really important to the kids. The Westmont kids are the only kids in our conference that our kids see outside of school. Everybody else is 40 miles away.” The Lions took advantage of a handful of offensive charges whistled against the Sentinels during the second half.

“That changed the way we attacked the basket,” said Westmont coach Craig Etheridge. “It changed the way we played.”
“I did feel with about six minutes left to go that we started to get stagnant,” LaScala said. “Then we were able to execute.
Getting those charges were huge on the defensive end. It’s something we talked about all week because they penetrate so

Downers South takes down rival North By Mark Gregory Sports Reporter
The Downers Grove South girls basketball team defeated rival Downers Grove North 47-40 last week to claim the cross-town rivalry, but while the meeting of the two in-district rivals happened for bragging rights, the main concern of the season is looming with the start of the playoffs Feb. 11. Downers Grove North, the No. 14 seed will open play against No. 19 Addison Trail, at 7:30 pm in the opener of the Elk Grove Village Regional. The winner of that game will face No. 3 Wheaton North Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. The match-up with Addison Trail will be the third this season for the Trojans and the second in less than a week, as the two teams face off to end the season on Feb. 6. In the first meeting earlier this
season, the Trojans won 59-37. In the other half of the regional bracket, Downers South, the No. 12 seed, will face No.6 Elk Grove Village at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12. With the two teams possibly meeting for a regional title, they could look to Saturday’s matchup for strategy. North took advantage of an early run to grab a 15-9 in the lead in the second quarter, however a 13-1 South run gave the Mustangs the lead back for good. “We didn’t look like we had a lot of energy early in the game,” said North coach Stephen Bolt said. “As the game went on we started to get going a little. It’s tough right now. We’re missing some kids and we’re not deep off the bench, but the kids played really hard. We are playing hard, but we are just not seeing the results with wins.” North’s Sarah Costello finished with a game-high 18 points, while Izzy Greenblatt added eight points. Kirsten Zemke paced South, who had a balanced scoring attack, with 11 points, while Nicole Janowiak added 10, Melissa McLean eight and Claire Hardy seven. “I think we were incredibly balanced,”South head coach Ellen O’Brien said. “It was a good win for us. We like when we come together at this time of year.” •Benet might be a young squad, but they’re certainly not showing their age this season. If they can knock off Marist on Wednesday and Hinsdale South on Friday to finish the regular season—both contests are home—the Redwings will go into their own regional, which begins Monday, Feb. 11, with 19 victories under their belt. “We’ve been playing pretty well but we’ve got a tough stretch even before the regionals,” said Benet coach Peter Paul. Benet gave ESCC foe Marian Catholic, one of the area’s topranked teams,a run for their money before losing, 63-56, on Saturday. The Redwings stormed back to make a game of it after trailing 5030 going into the final quarter. The Redwings have been getting steady scoring and leadership from senior Christen Prasse as well as solid play from freshman Kathleen Doyle, sophomores Emily Eshoo and Emily Schramek and juniors Eden Mark Gregory/Bugle Staff

drag-out battles in the postseason. Westmont has upended Lisle for a regional championship each of the past four years. The two clubs, who faced each other a couple of weeks ago (Lisle won that contest, 3331, Jan. 24), find themselves in the same regional once again at Immaculate Conception. However, both teams face a tougher road this season if they hope to play each other for a fifth time. The Sentinels, seeded fifth in the Lisle sectional complex, take on Chicago Christ the King, the fourth seed, Monday night. Lisle is the No. 2 seed and plays the winner of thirdseeded Immaculate Conception vs. Chicago Clark (sixth seed) on Tuesday. Both Lisle coach Dan Murray and Westmont’s Mike McCord
would ideally like to see another regional title matchup between the two schools, yet neither is thinking that far ahead because top-seeded Walther Lutheran also is in the IC regional. “I don’t want to remotely go in that direction,” said Murray, whose Lions have won 20-ormore games for the second time in his three years as coach. “Walther is the one seed and IC is the three seed for a reason. The winner of IC-Clark is where 100 percent of our focus is. Pick a name a name out of a hat think and any one of them can win (this regional).” McCord concurs. “That would be fun,” he said of a possible regional title showdown with the Lions.“We’d love to do it; we just hope we can do it. Walther is very quick and very aggressive and I have feeling
time, it’s not an acceptable play so he needs to learn how to handle that situation better. It’s a good opportunity for my kids to figure out how to play in a game like this and we didn’t finish it anywhere near the way we had to. It was frustrating.” The Sentinels were able to tie it once again on a jumper from senior Jean Pietrzak, who led all scorers with 22 points. But Burrell hit a jumper shortly thereafter that gave Lisle the lead for good and opened the door to its string of 10 free throws to finish the game. “It was all defense,” Ross said. “When he (Pierce) hit that shot (before intermission), we were all like,‘That was a lucky shot.’ At that point it was 0-0 again, and we were just going to come out like we did at the beginning of
the first quarter and play like that through the rest of the half to get the win.” The Lions roared out to a 10-2 lead to begin the game before the Sentinels (12-10, 5-3) climbed back into it and jumped ahead, 13-12, on Pietzrak’s hoop off a feed from Pierce. Pietrzak finished with five rebounds and four assists. His brother, Greg, also had seven rebounds. Ross pulled down seven boards for the Lions, (1212, 7-1), who ended a three-game skid with Friday’s victory, while Burrell and Jeremy Glavanouits each had five. The Lions visit Herscher Tuesday and will be at Coal City Friday.Westmont hosts Sandwich on Tuesday and play at Seneca on Friday.
Continued from page 12 Olson and Jenna Martin, among others. Benet, seeded sixth in the Oswego sectional complex, face 11th-seeded Naperville North in their regional opener Feb. 12. Should the Redwings win that game, their likely opponent will be No. 3 seed Naperville Central, a ranked team that’s won 20 games. The Redhawks defeated Benet earlier in the season. “For us to be successful, we’ve got to pick it up on the defensive end,” Paul said. “The better that we play defense, the better that we’re going to be.” •The Lions and Sentinels, rivals of course in the I-8, also have experienced some knock-down,
WIN Continued from page 11 through the fourth period also changed the complexion of the game for Westmont. Senior point guard Kris Pierce, who swished a desperation 60-foot shot at the second-quarter buzzer that enabled Westmont to tie the game at 20-20, picked up his fifth foul just after Danny Dwyer hit a three-pointer that knotted the score at 39. Pierce then zinged his headband across the floor in frustration, and was whistled for a technical foul. Monson converted two free throws to put the Lions ahead, 41-39. “I understand his frustration,” Etheridge said, “but at the same

at the Lyons Regional with 131.35 points. Lyons won with 149.775. Bella Marzari is headed to state in the all-around after placing fifth with a score of 33.45. Kate Moore is headed to state in the vault after placing fifth (9.1) and Inna Dzyuma is also going to state after taking fifth in the parallel bars (8.5).
GIRLS BOWLING The area’s girls bowling season came to an end Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Plainfield North Sectional at Echo Lanes in Morris. Christ King might be the same way. If we can handle pressure, we have a chance.” McCord is hoping to get the ball inside more to forward Susie Sternard, but he realizes opposing coaches will be looking to contain the 6-foot senior. “Coaches aren’t dumb,” he said. “They know what we want to do. But even if she can’t be successful she can occupy someone else.”
Downers South placed eighth with a 5,235, Downers North was 16th with a 4,515 and Lisle was 18th with a 4,048. Oswego East won with a 6,582 and will be joined at state by Waubonsie Valley (6,530). Plainfield East’s Kinswana Hubbard (1,369) and Lemont’s Kyra Udziela (1,310) are individual qualifiers. The Mustangs were led by Taylor Czubernat, who shot a 1,152 over six games. Audrey McCalebb added a 991. •The Trojans were paced by Elizabeth Pasieta’s 988 and Erin Bellie’s 966. The Lions were led by Shelby Jensen, who rolled a 1,004. Murray’s senior backcourt trio of Kelly Urban, Skylar Tomko and Kristina Fernette is leading the charge for the Lions, who went undefeated in the I-8 this season (11-0). “Obviously I’m happy with how we’re playing,” Murray said. “Our defense has been our constant and it’s something that we that we constantly talk about.” Mike Sandrolini contributed

McNellis three sends South past North By Mark Gregory Sports Reporter
As in any cross-town rivalry, records and rosters can be thrown out, strategies put on hold, because when teams and players know each other as well as the Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South players do – the game is going to be a dogfight. And that held true Saturday night as South, who had been down all game, won 42-39 on a Scott McNellis NBA range threepointer at the buzzer. “I am proud of the whole atmosphere,” said Downers Grove South coach Jay Baum, who was presented a plaque before the game. Baum is retiring after the school year. “Their coaches did a great job and we are all friends and the kids all played travel basketball together and they know each other. They are a good team and we are a good team, we are both probably a little better than our records. Hats off to the whole community for coming out. It was a great basketball game. It was a fantastic program win.” While North led most of the game, the Mustangs made a push late and took a two-point lead on a Danny Spinuzza threepointer that was erased on a pair of Myles Farley free throws with 1:38 left in the game. Following the foul shots, Baum decided to play for the last shot. “I trust Danny unequivocally to make good decisions and find the right guy,” Baum said. “The reason I didn’t call timeout is that I didn’t want them to change their defense.” Spinuzza ended up with the ball inside 15 seconds to play and looked for a shot. “Danny gave me a really good pass,”said McNellis. who buried his shot from well beyond the 3-point line.“Danny gave it to me right at the top of the key and right in my (shooting) pocket. I was looking for the high-w, so I was looking for Robert (Mara) cutting to the hoop, but it wasn’t there.” So McNellis popped the shot from the right wing and set off bedlam as South’s sizable student

section stormed the court. “It’s a good way to finish off my career against Downers North. “He gave it to me right at the top of the key right in my pocket and it was easy from there. We were looking for the high low with Rob (Mara) coming up, but there was less time than we thought, so I put it up and you know the story from there.” The story was a sea of blueclad Mustang students swarmed the court and piled on the game’s hero. “It was a good way to finish my career against North as a senior,” McNellis said. “It was good to celebrate with all my teammates and having a lot of fans there. It was a really fun game. I was right in the middle of that big pile. I wish I could have got some of
my teammates in there, and they tried, there was just no getting through that big wall.” McNellis led the Mustangs
with 12 points, while Spinuzza added eight and Mara chipped in seven. Nick Norton paced the Trojans
with a game-high 13 points. Deivis Skirgaila and Garret Tierney added six points each. mark@buglenewspapers.com

Communication key to managing stupid people tricks Q. My organization tripled the number of employees I supervise, and I’m exhausted with how many stupid mistakes they make. I make every effort to train them and yet they still manage to misunderstand nearly everything I say. How can I make the job to clear to them and not waste so much time with their mistakes?
has
A. You can save time by making sure your verbal and written training is exhaustively specific and clear. Consider the manufacturer’s safety warnings that state something like,
“Warning: do not jump off a cliff with this product.”The manufacturers assume if they don’t consider every possible mistake, people could make they will get sued. You probably won’t get sued by a new employee but you will waste a lot of time and annoyance. Therefore, you want to state every single thing you can think of that a new employee could do wrong and prevent it. Make a list of common mistakes that drive you crazy. Now make a thorough list of how employees can start out avoiding these behaviors. If you assume anything
an employee can do wrong - and will do wrong - you’ll be better at supervising new people. Make sure you use every sensory modality. Some people learn by seeing, some by hearing, and some by doing. Make sure each employee has seen, heard and done what you want when training. Research indicates that most of us take at least three times to learn any new skill. If you don’t want to show new employees a skill repeatedly, then assign other employees to mentor your new staff. The older employees get to refine their skills, you save time, and the new employee gets the repetition. Most of my clients tell me
they never had any training on the practical daily realities of supervising human beings. People who make it into management are often quick to learn, highly responsible and ambitious. They assume everyone they hire is just like them. Expecting all new employees to be just like you is a recipe for misery. Consider that your expectations about others at work may be the biggest source of your unhappiness with your job. If you expect (like the manufacturer’s safety warnings) that people will amaze you with the mistakes they are capable of making, you’ll be more prepared and less upset.
Once you have rewritten and revised your training approach, run it by a few eighth graders you know. If it is simple enough to make perfect sense to your average eighth grader, keep it. If not, back to the drawing board to clarify and simplify.

How should divorced dad set up kid’s car insurance? Dear Dave, I’m divorced and have a teenager who will be driving soon. What would be the best way to set up insurance for the child? Mike Dear Mike, I suppose a breakup does change the dynamic somewhat, but with my kids I simply left the car in my name and paid the extra insurance cost for a little while. For me, still being in control of the car as a dad outweighed the additional money I was paying in premiums. Having a minor child running
around in the world with his or her name on a car title is not a good plan. Then, when they turned 18, I put each of their cars into their names. This, of course, was dependent on them behaving and acting responsibly. They were legally liable at that age too. I’m sure the insurance costs went up, but at that point the financial risk and liability factors were on them, not me. In this kind of situation, especially because there’s more of a potential for disagreements, I
think I’d do it that way. Just put it in your name for now, especially if you’re putting money toward the purchase of a vehicle. —Dave
Where to put the 15%? Dear Dave, My employer recently stopped matching my 401(k) contributions. Together, my husband and I make about $100,000 a year. Should I continue to invest in this option, or should I put money into an IRA? Linda Dear Linda,
If possible, I would put 100 percent of my retirement savings into a Roth IRA with good, growth stock mutual funds before messing with a non-matching 401(k). But remember, my goal if you follow the Baby Steps is to be debt-free except for your home, and have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, before you begin setting aside for retirement. These are the steps that allow you to be prepared for emergencies and free up your largest wealth-building tool, which is your income. With your income, both you and your husband could open Roth IRAs and contribute $5,500 each in 2013. That’s a total of
$11,000 toward retirement next year, and it’s only 11 percent of your income. With this in mind, I’d advise going ahead with your 401(k)s after your Roth IRAs are in place. That would flesh out the remaining four percent and give you guys 15 percent of your income going toward retirement! —Dave Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. consideration you would like in return. Get bills paid today to avoid mix-ups later in the week.
is a fine week for smart financial maneuvering or to make your mark at community gatherings.

Sleeping alternatives: Bunking with the locals These days, when I travel to Europe, I usually sleep in hotel rooms or bed-andbreakfasts.But in my early travel days, I routinely found places where I could sleep for free or very cheap. In Austria, I had “dear parents” who were actually the parents of my sister’s ski instructor. In London, my hosts were friends of my uncle. Neither relationship was terribly close until I visited. Now we are friends for life. I love the idea of creatively finding a free or cheap bed in Europe. One of the best ways to do that is to stay in someone’s home, whether you’re renting a spare room or apartment, or crashing on your neighbor’s cousin’s couch. Sleeping where the locals do can provide some of the richest and most memorable travel experiences - often for less than a hotel. You don’t actually need to know someone in Europe to stay at their home. Room-finding services like Airbnb.com can help travelers hook up with locals. Beds range from air-mattress-inliving-room basic to plush-B-and-Bsuite posh. Most listings offer you at least a spare room, and many are for entire apartments. Some places offer separate entrances for
travelers who want more privacy and limited interaction with their hosts. If you prefer having the comforts of home without the pressure of feeling like a houseguest, renting an apartment, house or villa can be both convenient and costeffective. Options run the gamut, from French gites to Tuscan villas to big-city apartments in the heart of town. A short-term rental is often cheaper than, or comparable to, a hotel, especially if you plan to settle in one location for several nights. Most are equipped with kitchens, laundry, and living rooms, making them especially good for groups and families. Travelers who are willing to invest time in research can go to sites like HomeAway.com and its sister site VRBO.com, search through a database of listings, then correspond directly with European property owners or managers to negotiate a deal. Those who want to do less legwork can seek help from a rental agency, which charges a fee but provides pre-screened listings and a staff who will work with you to find an appropriate accommodation. Rental agencies such as Interhome.us and the more upscale Rentavilla.com list
places all over Europe, and there are many rental agencies that focus on a specific city or region. The rental route isn’t for everyone. First off, you’re generally on your own. While the apartment owner or manager might offer some basic assistance, they don’t provide all the services of a hotel reception desk. Unlike hotels, apartments don’t include daily towel and sheet changes or regular cleanings. CouchSurfing.org is a vagabond’s alternative to Airbnb. It lists millions of members who host fellow“surfers”in their homes for free. Most do this out of a sincere desire to meet interesting people, and many are in it for the good karma, having couchsurfed themselves. This service is a boon for laidback, budget-minded extroverts who aren’t too picky about where they rest their head. Safety is a concern for any smart couch surfer. My best tip for crashing with strangers: Always arrive with a backup in mind (such as the name of a hostel). If you don’t feel comfortable with your host, just leave. Don’t worry about hurting their feelings. Never let budget concerns take you outside your comfort zone. House swapping is another free option. This works best for people with an appealing place to offer, and who can live with the idea of having strangers in their
TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
Now that it’s so easy to connect and stay in touch online, travellers are finding more and more chances to crash with old or new friends.
home. Unsurprisingly, those living in swanky Manhattan apartments and beachside villas have the best pick of options in Europe, but you don’t need to live in an amazing home to find a workable exchange. Good places to start are HomeLink (www.homelink. org/usa), HomeExchange (www.homeexchange.com) or Intervac Home Exchange (www. intervacus.com). Of course, there’s nothing more culturally intimate (or inexpensive) as staying with a friend, relative, or someone you have a connection with. They don’t need to be next-of-kin. If it’s the son of your aunt’s friend, that’s probably close enough. Email your potential hosts, tell them when you’ll arrive,
and ask if they’re free to meet for dinner. It should be obvious from their response (or lack of one) if you’re invited to stop by and stay awhile. If you’re afraid of being perceived as a freeloader, remember that both parties benefit. A Greek family is just as curious about me as I am in them. Armed with pictures from home and a bag of goodies for the children, I make a point of giving as much from my culture as I am taking from theirs. In the end, whether you’re paying or staying for free, you’ll likely be greeted with genuine enthusiasm and a warm welcome.
