Westmont woman charged with husband’s murder

A Westmont woman was charged with first degree murder last week, following the stabbing death of her husband. Lisa Davis, 42, 515W. 61st St., stabbed her husband David Davus, 49, on Feb. 15, said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. At approximately 7:29 p.m., Westmont police officers responded to a 911 emergency call at the couple’s residence. Upon their arrival, officers found David Davis bleeding from a knife wound to the right side of his abdomen. He was treated at the scene and transported to a

local hospital. At approximately 11:36 p.m., Davis passed away due to his injuries. Lisa Davis was arrested at the scene and has remained in custody since her arrest. It is alleged that at some point in time prior to 7:29 p.m. Feb. 15, the couple got into a verbal altercation culminating with Lisa Davis stabbing her husband with a kitchen knife. “Every year, more than 1,300 people needlessly die as the result of domestic violence,” Berlin said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Davis’ surviving family

and friends as they cope with his murder. I would like to thank the Westmont Police Department for their work on this tragic case, as well as Assistant State’s Attorneys Tim Diamond and Amanda Meindl for their efforts in holding Mrs. Davis responsible for her actions.” Davis has been charged with one count of first-degree murder. She appeared in bond court Monday morning at the DuPage County Jail, 501 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, at 8 a.m. “On behalf of the entire Westmont Community, we

express our condolences to the Davis family during this tragic time,” Westmont Police Chief Thomas Mulhearn said. “We will continue to work closely with the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office in the prosecution of the defendant.” Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Developers withdraw petition for senior living facility By Jonathan Samples Staff Reporter

Petitioners have formally withdrawn plans for a proposed senior living facility

after a number of Downers Grove residents voiced their opposition to the project. Delta Development had proposed constructing the 95,000-square-foot facility near 63rd Street and Lyman Avenue after two alternate sites in the village were declined. Michael Fiandaca, president of Delta Development, said the company has until January 2014 to use their current state senior living facility license and finish construction of a facility. However, the village posted an update on its website, saying that no further action would

take place within the village. During a Jan. 28 public hearing, dozens of residents came out to oppose the facility. They cited the non-residential character of the project, a threat to property values, and technical concerns related to the buildings construction and maintenance as their primary objections. Additionally, a resident raised a concern over zoning restrictions on three parcels that were to be included in the project, which limited them to single-family homes. After looking into the issue, Planning Manager Jeff O’Brien sent a letter to the developers notifying them of the restriction and gave the developer until Feb. 11 to submit “documentation that the issue is resolved.” The developer withdrew

their petition Feb. 8. Village staff initially recommended moving forward on the proposal after a village report determined the facility would not adversely affect surrounding infrastructure, traffic patterns, light and air, or safety. The village report also found that the planned development “is an allowable special use in the R-1 and R-3 zoning districts.” “The plan recognizes the need for additional senior living facilities in the community,” O’Brien said during the public hearing. Fiandaca also stressed the need for a senior facility in the Downers Grove area during the meeting. He said there were only three licensed facilities, similar to the one his team was proposing, in DuPage County, all of which currently have waiting lists.

During the public comment portion of the Jan. 28 meeting, residents looked to refute the village report and reports put together by the developers, which stressed the lack of impact on the community. They offered dozens of comments in opposition to the senior living facility. “Delta Development has really been trying to flatter us with this facility,” Downers Grove resident Beth Wesolowski said. “This isn’t about enhancing our community and neighborhood. What it is about is their own personal financial gain.” Because of the outpouring of opposition, the Downers Grove Plan Commission voted 7-1 in favor of revisiting the issue at their Feb. 25 meeting. Now, that will not happen. jsamples@buglenewspapers.com

USPS hopes 5-day schedule will help cash-strapped agency By Jonathan Samples Staff Reporter

In the wake of the largest annual deficit in the U. S. Postal Service’s history, the agency recently announced a plan to cut Saturday mail delivery starting Aug. 5. The proposed move is expected to save the Postal Service $2 billion annually, said Postmaster General and CEO Patrick Donahoe in a released statement. But with a fiscal year deficit of $15.9 billion in 2012, it is not certain just what the move will mean for the agency’s bottom line. “We understand that the situation of the Postal Service and our need to cut cost and generate revenue at the same time,” said Beverly Howard, spokesperson for the Central Illinois District of the USPS.“We’re always doing things to keep us viable. We still have to do what’s necessary to reduce cost and, at the same time, generate revenue.” Howard said the scheduling plan is necessary, but it is up to Congress whether it will be implemented. “We were hoping we would have gotten some type if comprehensive postal legislation done to help us out,” Howard said.“We’ve been looking for that for quite some time and haven’t received it. Karen Ramanauskas was less supportive of the proposal, but said the Postal Service should do what needs to be done. “Actually, I like to have my mail on Saturdays, because I don’t do the online bill paying,” she said. “On the other hand, if it’s saving the post office money, I can understand where they’re coming from by cutting the Saturday service. But if it was up to me, I’d like to keep the Saturday service.” Kevin Keogh said he doesn’t feel the move will impact residential customers all that much. “As a resident, I don’t see it as a problem, because you still have mail Monday through Friday,” he said. “Business? That could be another issue.” Questions surrounding small businesses prompted one local chamber leader to reach out to members in order to gauge their reactions. Larry Forssberg, Executive Director of the Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau, said he contacted five local businesses at random, and all of them answered his questions the same way. “They did not think it would have any major impact or any real impact on their business,” Forssberg said. “What they cited See SATURDAY SERVICE, page 4

Patrick Donahoe to work to find a path to balancing the USPS budget that improves and streamlines services instead of cutting back.” U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Schaumburg) sent a letter to Donahoe asking that the Post Office continue delivering medications to all Americans six days a week. “Whether it is a homebound senior that cannot walk or drive to the pharmacy, or a Veteran who lives in a rural area with limited access to the prescription drugs they need, many of these home delivery beneficiaries cannot afford to go without their medications for days,” said Duckworth in the statement. She also said that she wanted to express concern with the end the United States Postal Service’s tradition of six-day mail delivery and its effect on the growing population of seniors, servicemen and women,Veterans and disabled Americans who rely on home delivery of their prescription drugs.

Radogno looks to prohibit minors from tanning beds Citing studies confirming tanning beds are medically-proven to be carcinogenic to humans, State Sen. Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) introduced legislation Feb. 15 to protect minors from the potentially deadly effects of sunless tanning beds. “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of developing melanoma due to tanning bed use increases by 75 percent for people under age 35, and the British Medical Journal agrees the earlier people start tanning, the greater the risk they will develop skin cancer,” Radogno said.“There are plenty of safe tanning alternatives available, and there is absolutely no need for young people to take this unnecessary health risk.” Senate Bill 2244 would prohibit minors age 17 and younger from tanning in sunless tanning beds. Currently minors 14 to 17 are allowed to tan if they can provide a parental signature. However, this would be restricted if Radogno’s legislation is signed into law. “Just as we don’t give children the option to smoke, they

shouldn’t be allowed to tan indoors—which medical studies show is a dangerous, and even deadly, practice,” said Radogno, who noted that in 2009 experts at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization, moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category—the same classification given to arsenic and mustard gas. “The light from indoor tanning beds is considered a Class 1 carcinogen, and many respected medical experts agree sunless tanning does increase the risk of cancer.” Many states have laws regulating tanning by minors. While California and Vermont are the only states with an outright ban on minors under age 18 using tanning beds, studies show national momentum in that direction. In 2010, 14 different states worked to pass legislation prohibiting minors from tanning indoors, and in 2012 that number increased to 20 states pursuing an outright indoor tanning ban for minors.

Eighty-five members of the House of Representatives signed Duckworth’s bipartisan letter to Donahoe. “Congress has repeatedly shown bipartisan opposition to attempts to end Saturday mail service,” U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, said in a released statement. “Millions of small businesses, seniors and others rely on Saturday service, and it should not be first on the chopping block to solve the financial problems the USPS faces. “The United States Postal Service is an important institution that our country relies on—I encourage Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe to work to find a path to balancing the USPS budget that improves and streamlines services instead of cutting back.” Current federal legislation prohibits the Postal Service from adopting a five-day schedule, but that is et to expire in March. Donahue has asked Congress to allow the agency to implement the new schedule.

If lawmakers do not prohibit the new schedule, the Postal Service would still deliver packages and prescription drugs six days a week. Post offices currently open on Saturdays would continue to operate, allowing customers to drop off mail and purchase stamps or other materials. jsamples@buglenewspapers.com

Police find suspect in suspicious incident Downers Grove Police have located the subject of a suspicious incident that occurred on Feb. 11, involving a 13-year-old boy who was approached by a lone male in a vehicle while walking to school. The boy was walking on his way to school in the area of the Westbrook West Condos, near 40th Street and Saratoga Avenue. The boy said he was approached by a vehicle driven by a lone male occupant, who rolled down his window and

offered him a ride to school. The boy immediately fled the area on foot. A search of the immediate and surrounding areas by police was initially unsuccessful in locating the described man and/or vehicle. Police were attempting to locate a Hispanic man approximately 50 years of age with a gray mustache, dark spots under his eyes and last seen wearing a tan jacket. The vehicle he was driving was described as a light blue fourdoor Buick or Mercury with

damage on the driver’s side trunk. During the investigation, officers received information from a citizen that a person matching the subject’s description was in the area asking for directions to traffic court. Traffic court is held near the area where the incident occurred and the subject was identified through court records. Cummings, Anaya place at state By Mark Gregory Sports Reporter

Downers Grove North senior Cullen Cummings always dreamed of being a collegiate athlete and that dream will come true next year in a surprising fashion. The fact that he is playing college sports that is a surprise, it is what sport he is participating in that’s the shocker. Cummings, a talented and well regarded soccer player, will give up the sport and focus on wresting. “Up until the end of last year, I thought I would play soccer in college,” Cummings said. “The sport of wrestling just gets a hold of you and I fell in love with it. I was always way into soccer. Last summer we won a national championship, so it was soccer all the time after wrestling season.” After placing second in the state a year ago, Cummings knew his future was on the mat and he began to focus on winning a state title this year. Unfortunately, Cummings was in one of the toughest weight classes in the state and fell short of the finals, but he did earn his second consecutive state medal, placing fourth at 138 pounds. “It was pretty deep, if we wrestled this 10 times, it comes out 10 ways,” said Cummings. “I didn’t come out and wrestle my match in the last match.” In his final match for the Trojans, Cummings (42-2) lost 3-2 to John Pellegrino of Sandburg. It was only his second loss all season. The first loss came in the semifinal match as eventual state champion Mech Spraggins of Belleville West won 8-4. Cummings opened the tournament with a 1-0 major

decision over Lockport’s Dominic Naso and followed that up with 7-1 win over Wheaton North’s Sean Murray. After the loss to Spraggins, Cummings beat Steve Galiardo of St. Pat’s to get into the third place match. “It is an honor to place in Illinois and Cullen has a firm grasp of that,” said North coach Chris McGrath. “He gets it and appreciates that it was a tough

weight class that could have gone any way. I couldn’t be prouder of him. He is a helluva kid and he has a helluva work ethic. He is a great kid and deserves everything he gets. It stings a little that he has beat everyone on the podium, but it was a tough class. The defending state champion (Sal Annoreno for Bartlett) doesn’t even place. “We haven’t seen the end of him yet. He is going to have a

really successful college career. Someone is going to get a very hungry young man.” Cummings is ready for the task of wrestling in college and he hopes his story inspires others at North to push for a state title. “I just gave up soccer this past fall and I feel like I am getting in the swing of things and I feel like I am turning into a full and complete wrestler. I can only improve from here on out,” he

said. “It gives kids something to look at because if a soccer player can come in and place twice, they can do anything, it gives those kids something to shoot for.” Cummings wasn’t the only Downers Grove wrestler to place at the state meet, as Dowers Grove South senior Alex Anaya placed sixth at 160. Cold shooting second half costly for Benet By Scott Taylor Sports Editor

The law of percentages has a way of working out. In the Benet Regional final Thursday, Feb. 14, the host Redwings, the No. 6 seed in the Oswego Sectional, were on fire from beyond the arc and built a 15-point lead on No. 3 seed Naperville Central. However, as hot as they were in the first half, they were that cold in the second half, and fell to the Redwings 44-42. “It was a good game,” Benet coach Peter Paul said. “It was a game of halves. The first half was ours, and the second half was theirs. We couldn’t buy a basket. There was a lid on it, and it didn’t matter how hard we tried. All in all, I thought it turned out well. We’re young, and now there’s a regional title at stake. We had our opportunities and

fell short.” “We didn’t play bad; our shots, in the second half, we just couldn’t make any,” Benet senior guard Christen Prasse said. “That’s what stinks about it. We played our hearts out on defense and rebounding, but we just couldn’t get our shots to fall, and they were hitting their shots. I couldn’t ask for anything more from the team. I’m proud.” Benet drained five threepointers in the first half and built leads of 21-8 after the first quarter and 35-20 at the half. They would make just two field goals in the second half, both inside the arc, as open three-pointers weren’t falling, and inside shots were getting stuffed by 6-foot, 2-inch Victoria Trowbridge. Still, the Redwing defense kept them ahead, and they took a 40-32 advantage into the fourth quarter. Neither team made a field goal in the fourth quarter until Naperville Central’s Shannon Ryan hit a contested three with two minutes left in the game to make it 41-36. Benet made one of two free throws for the second straight trip, and another quick three-pointer made it 42-39 with 1:35 left. “We were trying as hard as we could,” Paul said. “Maybe we started taking the air out of the ball a little early. When we look at the tape, we had our opportunities and just didn’t take advantage.” On the play,St.Louis Universitybound Prasse took a pair of elbows and was taken out of the game to get checked out. Without their senior leader, the Redwings were able to draw a foul, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Ryan promptly drilled Naperville Central’s third straight three-ball to tie the game. However, Naperville fouled Benet on the other end, but two more missed foul shots allowed Central a last opportunity. Benet was just 2-for-7 from the line in the last 2:12. “That’s what we talked about,” Paul stated.“The kids that we had in there are our best free throw shooters. We just couldn’t get it done.” After milking the clock, Central got it inside to Trowbridge, who scored with eight seconds left to give them the lead. Benet came back down the court and got the ball to Prasse,

whose three-point shot beat the buzzer, but was off the mark. “We knew they weren’t going to lay down,” Paul said.“We knew there was going to be a run at some point. We just ran out of time and didn’t quite stop them.” Emily Schramek led the way with 14 points for Benet, while Prasse added 11.

With Prasse being the lone senior starter, not many thought they would even be in the situation to win another regional title. “My coach was saying how all my best friends left me, and he thought it was going to be hard for me this year, but it wasn’t,” she said.“They (this year’s team) are all my best friends now. They

will be there at my wedding and everything. “At the beginning of the season before we started playing games, I didn’t think we would get this far, but when we stepped out on the court, I knew we were going to do good things, and we did. We just fell short in the regional championship.” staylor@buglenewspapers.com

Lewellyan headed to state in breaststroke By Scott Taylor Sports Editor

With two events left at the Neuqua Valley Sectional Saturday, Feb. 16, it appeared Benet was going to be without a state qualifier for the third straight year. Then came the 100-yard breaststroke. That’s where senior Patrick Lewellyan, competing in the third of five heats, qualified for state with a time of 1:00.77, six hundredths ahead of the qualifying mark. He finished eighth in the stacked event. “I’ve been practicing because I wanted to go to state since freshman year,” Lewellyan said. “I’ve been working hard and hoping I would, and I did. I was a little nervous.” Competing in one of the earlier heats makes it harder to hit the time, but Lewellyan came in with the right attitude. “My mindset was I just had to go as hard as I can,” he said.“I just had to go for it. I had no idea I had made the time. I wasn’t worried about the clock. I just wanted to

PLACE Continued from page 11 “It feels great,” Anaya said of placing. “This is obviously not what I wanted, but this season has been great. This is my senior year, so this is just bittersweet. I had high expectations, but things don’t always go your way, so I wouldn’t trade this season for anything.” Anaya dodged a pair of bullets that could have ended his season early. After losing to Hunter Rollins of Hersey in the opening round, Anaya would have been eliminated from competition if Rollins lost in the quarterfinals. He won, placing Anaya in the wrestlebacks. Again with his back to the wall, Anaya got a take down in the closing two seconds of his first wrestleback match to defeat Lincoln-Way Central’s Max Schneider 4-3 and stay alive.

do what I had to do.” After the race was over, he looked up at the board and saw his time was just better than the state mark. “I was thrilled,” Lewellyan said. “I don’t know what to say about it. The hard work paid off, definitely. It’s exciting to represent Benet (at state). We haven’t had anyone go the past couple years. It feels good to break that streak and get going again.” Now that he is headed to state, which begins Friday, Feb. 22, at New Trier High School in Winnetka, he is looking to set a new mark. “I want to go for a record at 59.75,” he said. “It’s going to take a lot of practice.” •Downers South will be represented by Alec Masterson, Josh Jager and Ryan Kujawa at state. Masterson finished second in the 50 free with a qualifying time of 21.77, while Kujawa won the sectional title in diving with 507.85 points. Jager finished fourth in diving with 419.95 points. staylor@buglenewspapers.com

He then beat Paul Papoutsis of NewTrier 4-3 as well before getting pinned by Brother Rice’s Nuntreae Jackson in the wrestleback semifinals. In the fifth-place match, he lost 5-3 on overtime to Peter Andreotti of Marist. Downers South’s Joe Nugent competed in the 126 pound class and was eliminated with a pair of losses to state placers. In the opening round, he fell to third-place finisher Isaiah White IV, Oak Park-River Forest by a 22-7 technical fall and in the wrestlebacks, he lost 6-0 to fifthplace finisher Nick Nasenbeny of Plainfield Central. At 285, South’s Mike Hobbs won his opening match by pinning Gino Orlandi of Notre Dame in 3:41. Hobbs lost in the quarterfinals to eventual runner up Andrew Geers of Neuqua Valley 12-0. In the wrestlebacks, Hobbs was eliminated with a 3-2 loss to Chris McDermand of Libertyville. •Lisle’s A.J. Pascente competed at the 113 pound class in Class

Let wife handle her mom’s overspending issue Dear Dave, My mother-in-law has a serious credit card problem. She can’t afford stuff, but she shops anyway, acquires more and more credit and thinks she’ll pay for it all later somehow. Her husband has bailed her out a few times, but he’s unwilling to do it anymore. My wife and I, and her sister, want to address this issue, but where do we start? Jonathan Dear Jonathan, First of all, you need to stay out of the discussion. This is something for her daughters to handle, and her husband needs

to be part of it, too. He’s closer to this and feels the effects more than anyone else in the family. They need to sit down with her in a closed setting, where there are no interruptions, no television and no one else. Start with the fact that they love her and care about her deeply. This part is really important. But they also have to walk through what’s going on, and let her know they’re tired of watching her destroy herself and her marriage with this immature and irresponsible behavior. Everyone involved should

understand going in that they’re likely to receive a volatile, angry reaction from this lady. Sometimes people get ticked off when they hear the truth, especially when it’s connected to their own misbehavior. It may even be a good idea for your wife, her sister and your fatherin-law to get some advice from a family counselor beforehand. What we’re really talking about here is an intervention. If she were a drunk, you’d want to try and make her see how alcohol was hurting her and the relationships she has with her family. Basically, she has a credit card addiction, and it’s wreaking havoc on her marriage and their financial well-being. Show as

much love and understanding as possible, but someone has to say something and draw a line in the sand. Otherwise, this behavior will eat everyone alive! —Dave

Closing whole life Dear Dave, I want to get out of my whole life policy. Should I formally close out the old policy, or just stop paying the premiums? Anonymous Dear Anonymous, Close out the old policy once you have a good, term life insurance policy in place. I recommend 15- to 20-year level term insurance equal to 10 to 12 times your annual income. For

instance, if you make $40,000 a year, you should have $400,000 to $500,000 in coverage. Term life insurance is much less expensive than whole life. Plus, did you know that you lose the part of your whole life policy known as the “savings plan” or “cash value” when you die? They only pay the face amount of the policy. So, close it out and stop pumping money into that thing! But don’t leave yourself uninsured. Make sure you have the proper coverage in a term policy first. There is never a good time to save money inside a rip-off, whole life, cash value insurance plan! —Dave

Why is the boss upset about expense reports? Q. My boss seems to be completely miffed by an expense report I didn’t file. I just can’t believe he doesn’t have more important things to be upset about. He is ready to fire me because I didn’t file one small report. Is there any way to get at what is really going on? A. You are wise to realize it is absolutely not the expense report that is making him want to fire you. If you want to keep your job, you need to find out which of two situations is going on: 1.He thinks this expense report is an example of a problem he has had over and over with you. 2. The expense report is a trigger for some large emotional issue for your boss. Your problem solving will be entirely different depending on which of these two scenarios you think is going on. Start by honestly considering whether you tend to screw up paperwork. There is a personality type at work that tends to enjoy big picture issues and blow off administrative tasks as petty.Have you tended to ignore administrative tasks? If your boss is the opposite personality profile (called on “S” on the Meyers-Briggs test) then details are his life. For you to blow off paperwork is tantamount to you declaring war on what he values. Even if you think curing cancer is the point of your job, if

you don’t file the right paperwork, he will fire you. If you’ve been inadvertently disrespectful to your boss’s administrative priorities, immediately admit your error and strive to make paperwork important. You will save your job and amaze your boss. If, however, the problem is your boss has an emotional issue that has been triggered by you not filing paperwork, a different approach would be indicated. Let’s say that your boss has a huge issue with people thinking he is stupid. Let’s say he believes you think that his request to submit an expense report is ... well, stupid ... can you see the problem here? People don’t always get mad at us for logical reasons at work. People often are walking around with a long history of emotional issues in one particular area, and then we step right on that land mine. If your boss has been triggered emotionally by your behavior, you need to meet privately with him.You need to tell him you know it might appear to him that by not filing your expense report you are criticizing his management. Retire Smart: Overcoming vicious cycle of greed and fear By Jill Schlesinger Tribune Media Services

The stock market has been on a roll, reaching new five-year highs and approaching all-time nominal (not inflation-adjusted) highs, which is tempting many investors to jump back into the fray. TrimTabs reports that investors have poured a record-setting $55 billion into equity-related mutual and exchange-traded funds in the first four weeks of 2013, but is the optimism warranted? There are a number of very good reasons for the rises in stocks. First, let’s look abroad, where the outlook has improved. After two years of non-stop worry about the European “PIIGS” (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain) and the debt crisis, the euro zone is no longer on the precipice of disaster.Additionally, when China’s red-hot property market imploded, many worried that the Chinese government would not be able

to manage an orderly coolingoff, its economy would come to screeching halt and the miracle would come to end. That muchfeared “hard economic landing” in China never came to fruition and recent data suggest that the country is resuming a more consistent pace of growth. Finally, the election of a new government in Japan has been a shot in the arm for that country’s multi-decade economic stagnation. In the U.S., the Congressional decision to delay the debt ceiling debate until May eased investors’ concerns in the near term. There are other political and fiscal deadlines that loom, but none quite as severe as a potential U.S. default. Another bright spot is the housing market, which bottomed in 2012 and is starting to contribute to economic growth, rather than detract from it.Perhaps the biggest boost to stocks has come from the Federal Reserve, which is likely to maintain its low

interest-rate policies (including the monthly purchase of $85 billion worth of bonds) until the national unemployment rate drops to 6.5 percent. Taken together, these factors have created a tailwind for stocks. But does that mean you should be more aggressive with your retirement assets? The answer is a resounding NO! If you have been avoiding risk for the past few years, you have done so for a reason: you did not want to take the stock market roller-coaster ride. Now that equities are up about 5 percent this year (not to mention that they’ve more than doubled since their low in March 2009), your inclination to dive back into stocks could just be because of the pesky voice of Greed whispering in your ear. You might remember that guy, the one who persuades you that you are missing out on market booms after prices have already gone up. Greed is usually right

about the market for a short time. Then, when the bottom falls out, his alter ego, Fear, shows up to convince you to sell everything. All of the sudden, your emotions ensnare you in a Greed/Fear tugof-war in which you are buying high and selling low. Compare that with a balanced approach that helps keep those emotions in check. Investors who create and adhere to long-term plans periodically rebalance their retirement accounts. Here’s an example of how it might work in practice: Joe has been retired for five years and manages his investments by himself. Every few months, he checks his accounts to make sure that his 50-50 split between stocks and bonds remains in balance. When he last checked, his equity position had swelled to 55 percent because of the recent stock market rise. He diligently sells 5 percent of his stocks and rotates the proceeds into bonds. In other words, he forces himself

to sell high and buy low, the exact opposite of what happens when Greed and Fear control his investment decisions. The benefit of rebalancing is that instead of chasing stocks higher, you can be confident about selling as the market makes new highs and equally confident that you will buy when it drops to the lows. Following a disciplined approach is never more important than when the market swings in either direction, and Greed and Fear come a-calling. Protect yourself and your assets by avoiding emotion-driven decision making.

Mayo Clinic: Take steps to sharpen memory as you age By Tribune Media Services

DEAR MAYO CLINIC: Is it true that there are things I can do to prevent memory loss as I age? I’m 48 and feel like my memory is very poor compared to just a few years ago. ANSWER: Commonly, memory becomes less efficient as we age. Although there’s no surefire way to prevent memory loss, you can take steps that may help. If memory loss begins to interfere with your day-to-day activities, though, or if changes in memory concern you, talk to your doctor. As people get older, the number of cells, or neurons, in the brain decreases. That decrease can make it harder to learn new things or remember familiar words or names. You may have difficulty recalling names of acquaintances, for example, or trouble finding your reading glasses or car keys. Some people become concerned that those memory lapses could signal the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. That’s rarely the case. A number of lifestyle changes can often help sharpen your memory. First, stay active physically and mentally. Physical activity increases blood flow to your body, including your brain, and that can help your memory. So, take a brisk walk, or go biking, swimming or skiing. Do whatever

you enjoy to stay active on a regular basis. Physical activity helps keep your body in shape, and intellectual activity can do likewise for your brain. Reading, writing, attending movies or plays, playing games or discussing current events can be mentally engaging activities. Again, find the activities you like, and stick with them. Second, stay or get involved in a social network. As you get older, avoid the tendency some people have to withdraw from others. Interact with your family and friends, civic organizations, a faith or other community. Being with others can help lower your risk of depression and reduce stress. Both may have a role in memory loss. Third, eat a healthy diet. In general, a diet that keeps your heart healthy can do the same for your brain. Such a diet typically includes whole grains; lean meat, poultry and fish; and at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Also, drink plenty of water and limit the amount of alcohol you drink, as dehydration and too much alcohol can both lead to confusion and possibly memory loss. Fourth, stay organized. You can structure daily activities to decrease the likelihood that you will forget what you need to do

or where something is located. Making lists, putting items away where they belong and getting rid of unneeded clutter can help. Finally, as much as possible, focus on one thing at a time. Multitasking may feel efficient but can become stressful and distracting. Neither is good for your memory. If you try these lifestyle changes and memory still seems to be a significant problem, or if you’re worried about recent memory changes, make an appointment to see your primary care doctor. The doctor can discuss your symptoms with you and review your family medical history and medications or dietary supplements you’re taking. In some cases, memory loss can be a side effect of certain drugs. Your doctor may also talk with you about your stress level or any major life changes you’ve experienced. Together, you and your doctor can sort through the issues that may be contributing to memory loss and decide on the best course of action. - Ronald C. Petersen, M.D., Ph.D., Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
