Journey on Ice Two-time United States National Champion Alissa Czisny to perform in Annual Spring Ice Show

O

n May 26, Seven Bridges Ice Arena will be holding its annual spring ice show, “A Journey On Ice” featuring two-time United States National Champion and World Competitor Alissa Czisny.

This year’s show will take the audience on an adventure through the many levels and journeys of a figure skater.

Alissa was the 2009 and 2011 United States Senior Ladies National Champion and 2010 Grand Prix Champion. Alissa will hold an autograph session following her performances. Also skating in this year’s show is four-time Regional Champion Osadolo Irowa and twotime Junior National Competitor Kelvin Li, both whom train at the Seven Bridges facility, as well as

2009 Junior National Champion and 2012 National Competitor, Nick Vrdoljak.

“A Journey On Ice” will also feature skaters from the Seven Bridges Basic Skills Program, as well as skaters from the Competitive Program. The ages of skaters performing in the show range from tots through adults.

Show times on Saturday, May 26 are 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.Tickets can be purchased by calling the arena office at: 630-271-4400 and will also be available for purchase on the day of the show starting at 1 p.m.Adult admission is $15, seniors (65+) and children (ages 12 and under) are $12. Benedictine students get real view of Cuba on study abroad trip Few Americans have ever set foot on the Caribbean island nation of Cuba, but this spring more than a dozen Benedictine University students toured the countryside and greeted its people – liberties that have remained off limits to American tourists since 1962.

While most Americans tend to think of Cuba as an impoverished nation with an oppressive communistcontrolled government, Benedictine University students got to see another side of the country under a special license granted to research institutions and university students.

What they saw was a Cuba that has transformed itself during the last few decades into a model of environmental sustainability and self-reliance, and a country with a vastly improved quality of life with average life expectancy and literacy rates on par with the United States.

The transfer of power from Fidel Castro to his brother, Raul Castro, in 2009, has raised even more questions about the country’s future. Cuban nationals are considering limiting social services in favor of supporting more capitalistic endeavors, according to Jack Thornburg, associate professor of Anthropology at Benedictine University.

“This is an exciting time to be visiting Cuba,” Thornburg said.

“Cuba is undergoing changes not seen since the success of the revolution of 1959. Individuals are demanding and pushing for greater economic and social autonomy from the state. Under the new economy, there appears to be a growing social division based on economic opportunity.

They want equal opportunity and social and economic

justice within a new revolution for themselves and without interference from outside forces.”

Benedictine students visited the cities of Havana, Santa Clara and Sancti Spiritus, where they toured small urban organic farms and large-scale agriculture operations which utilize sustainable farming practices without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Students also visited medical clinics and schools, neighborhoods, eco-villages, the University of Santa Clara and a center for sociological research, where they met with students, researchers, artists, doctors and restaurant chefs.

In 2006, the World Wild Life Foundation cited Cuba as the only country in the world that met standards for sustainable development, and students like Stephanie Lindgren said she could see why.

“The Cuban people practice the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle far beyond just setting out a blue bin on your curb once a week,” Lindgren said. “I observed the bottoms of glass bottles being used as windows and whole bottles and old coffee cans used as flower planters. Oil drums became trash receptacles, egg cartons became places to grow seeds and even old food was turned into jewelry. There was a conscious effort everywhere we went to reuse what people had that here at home we would regard as rubbish.”

Cut-off from other nations, Cubans had to compensate for their inadequate food supply and developed a self-sufficient system where they utilize whatever space is available – small plazas, yards and rooftops – to grow their own food. In many

neighborhoods, 50 percent of Cuban’s diets revolve around local gardens.

Caitlin Bettisworth and Joseph Lagattuta said that while Cuba lacks access to advanced health care equipment and medicine, they were impressed with the country’s free health care and educational system. However, they were both concerned about the U.S. trade embargo and its affect.

“They have succeeded in some aspects with free health care and education,” Bettisworth said.“But the embargo has created a lot of problems for them. For example, to get chemotherapy treatments, they have to pay two times more than what we pay here.

“One of the things I found really cool about Cuban medical

schools is the education is completely free,” Lagattuta said. “American students leave medical school with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt.

Cuban medical students are also guaranteed a job as soon as they graduate – they are placed in a three-year program where they will go to a remote area of the country to provide health care.”

Students said the experience ran counter to what they had learned and heard about Cuba, and felt they got a more realistic view of what life is like there by visiting the country and meeting

its people.

However, talking with the dozens of people I met directly, Cubans have shown me there’s a vibrant civil society that enjoys many modern liberties. This experience taught me you should research before you formulate an opinion and that you should never accept the status quo.”

Although not planned as part of the excursion, the students’ trip coincided with a visit from Pope Benedict XVI, who said Cuba was poised to lead a renewed society See CUBA, page 4

Village Council discusses long range financial plan The Village Council met Tuesday, following the Village Council meeting, to review and update the Long Range Financial Plan. Staff provided an overview of the current plan, including the issues and recommended strategies; outlined the key actions taken during the past 12 months in support of the plan; discussed the results of these

key actions; and presented the recommended updates to the plan.

Each year, the village updates the LRFP to identify financial trends and issues, and to develop strategies and solutions to guide financial and operational decisions. The LRFP, which has a three- to five-year horizon, is used to prepare annual municipal

budgets and to guide day-to-day operations. The village has been preparing LRFPs in this manner since 2009.The financial planning process is a key component to achieving the village’s Strategic Plan goal of Steward of Financial & Environmental Sustainability.

South High students place first and second in State Architecture Competition Two students from South High School in Downers Grove placed first and second in the Illinois Drafting Educators Association’s state competition, which was held at Illinois State University.

Junior Adam Newton took first place and is state champion in the 3D Architectural CAD competition.

Newton is the first student from South High School to win a state championship two years in a row.

In 2011, he won the Architectural 2D competition.

Senior Chris Behnke placed second in the same category, 3D Architectural CAD. The 3D Architectural CAD competition requires students to complete a fully dimensioned floor plan as well as 3D Virtual model of a residential home. All students must adhere to specific building parameters, as well as completing the project with a certain time constraint.

Also qualifying for state were South High student Ross Netzel, who competed in the Architectural CAD Drawing 2D category, and North High student Jordan Gill, who competed in Assembly Modeling. Teacher Tony Ciezaldo sponsors the SkillsUSA program at North High.

The students competed against qualifiers from 20 regions across Illinois.

“Both Adam and Chris put in a lot of time and effort to prepare for this rigorous state contest,” South High teacher Mark Molinari said. “Both students are highly skilled, and

it’s exciting to see them creating a strong foundation for a future in architecture--or any number of skilled careers they may choose.”

Other students on the trip included Alexis Wadowski, a junior majoring in Physics and Finance from Oakbrook; Tariq Weaver, a senior majoring in Political Science from Chicago; and Maritza Zepeda, a sophomore majoring in Nuclear Medicine Technology from Bolingbrook.

At approximately 10 p.m. on April 30, two juveniles, from Darien and Downers Grove, were charged with criminal damage to property after they shattered windows with an unknown object at two separate residences, one in the 7400 block of Woodward Avenue and the other in the 7600 block of Bristol court.

A burglary from motor vehicle occurred at approximately 8 p.m. on May 2 in the 7300 block of Woodward Avenue. Unknown persons removed a wallet from a vehicle.

At approximately 12:15 a.m. on May 3, Scott Esposito, 40, 14446 Mallard Drive, Homer Glen, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop near the intersection of Joliet and Davey Road.

When a young team from a Division II school goes to play in a Division I Final Four, nerves and inexperience expect to play a part.

That was the case for the Lewis University men’s volleyball team last Thursday.

Facing the University of Southern California in the national semifinals, the No. 1 ranked team in the country, the Flyers got off to a slow start, losing the first two sets 25-18, 25-12.

“I think a lot of the guys were kind of surprised,” former Downers Grove standout Jay Petty said.“It’s a totally different environment and no one on our team has been there before.

Ohio State the past four years has represented our conference.

There were three guys on the court who were first year players for us. With the effect of the environment, we didn’t really play our volleyball and it really showed. We were shell-shocked by the whole experience.”

However, the resilient Flyers mounted a comeback in game three, winning 25-18, and held the lead for much of the fourth set before falling 27-25.

“We talked about getting settled down and get back to playing the way we play,” Petty said. “We settled down in the third set and started getting in a rhythm. They were tearing us up from the serve-receive line and we were able to control the game from the serve-receive line. It showed that we were meant to be there and it wasn’t a fluke. There was a lot of talk about how Division II schools shouldn’t be representing the Final Four.”

“We did start off a little slow, which I thought had a lot to do with experience,” Maine South alum Eric Butch said. “None of our guys have been to a Final Four or have been on a national stage before. We came out kind

of slow, but it was good to see us fight. We won game three and gave them a good run in game four. It really showed that Lewis belongs on a national stage.”

Geoff Powell finished with 17 kills and nine digs, while Jay Petty finished with 17 kills and seven digs.

The good news for Lewis is that many of its players return next year, so they will be if they get back to the Final Four next year.

“It’s a great experience,” Petty said. “Hopefully we can compete at an even higher level next year.”

“We got the experience and we know what to expect,” said freshman Greg Petty, the 2011 Voyager Media Player of the Year and Downers North alum.

“This year we came out a little slow and weren’t ready for it.

I think next year we’ll do a lot better. I’m sure that everyone will work hard and will want to prove that we can win a championship.”

The Flyers will take away a lot of positive from their experiences this year.

“It was a lot of fun,” Jay Petty said.“After we beat Ohio State it kind of hit us and became real.

It was an experience unlike any other. We played in some packed gyms this year, but to play in the Gaelin center, in the Final Four and to compete with USC was great.”

“It was a lot of fun,” Greg Petty added. “We got to play some of the best teams in the country and gain some huge exposure. We proved that a D-II midwest school could compete with the top teams from the west coast.”

Lewis finished with a 26-7 record, the most wins in the nation.

“It’s incredible to have the most wins in the country,” Jay Petty said. “It’s an accomplishment. We’re pretty proud of what we did.” staylor@buglenewspapers.com

Benet gets blanked by Duchene, JCA

When Benet’s Bobby Tumpane hit a slow ground ball up the middle in the sixth inning of a 7-0 loss to JCA, he hustled down the line as if it was the gamewinning hit of the World Series.

BASEBALL JCA second baseman Zach Melone made a good play on the ball, but Tumpane beat it out.

That hit came with two outs in the sixth inning of the game and it was the first base runner the Redwings’ had the whole game against JCA senior Kevin

Duchene.

The University of Illinois bound lefty was four outs shy of throwing a perfect game.

“He was outstanding today,” said Benet coach Scott Lawler.

“Probably the best good we have seen all year. We have seen some pretty good teams and he is the best.And overall, this is probably the best complete team we have seen against us all year.

Benet (10-10, 2-3) would finish with three hits, added a pair of solid base hits in the seventh, but they couldn’t ruin Duchene’s day.

He finished with 13 strikeouts and no walks on the game. The shutout moved him to 5-0 on

the season with a 0.25 ERA. Lawler said that facing a pitcher like Duchene can only help the program get to its ultimate goal.

“If we want to get to where we want to get to, which is go to state and win state, you are going to have to learn to beat a kid like that,” he said.“ •A day after beating cross-town rival Downers North, Downers South scorched Proviso East, 23-0, in WSG action. Alex Galik pitched the shutout. Galik, Nick Vanek, Zach Burdi, Brett Bialek, Claudio Jerez and Danny Mayer each doubled for DGS in the rout.

•The Sentinels, seeded fourth

in their upcoming regional, posted a 6-1 Interstate Eight triumph over Seneca on May 1 in a game that went just five innings due to rain. Brian Albaugh went all five innings, striking out five while throwing a three-hitter.

John Kelly led the offense with two RBIs; Charlie Donovan and Zach Hill each had a hit and an RBI. On May 3, Jean Pietrzak fanned nine Seneca batters and tossed a complete-game, threehit shutout in a 9-0 I-8 victory at Seneca. Pietrzak also went 2-for3 at the plate with two RBIs. Ryan Schlicher doubled, singled and drove in two runs,

and Donovan enjoyed a 3-for-4 day with a double and an RBI. Kelly and Albaugh also had RBIs. The Sentinels battled back from 4-0 and 7-4 deficits vs.

Dwight and prevailed, 8-7, in the I-8 on May 4. Donovan, pitching three innings in relief of starter Greg Pietrzak, recorded the victory.

Donovan also picked Westmont up with his bat, going 2-for-4 and delivering the gametying and game-winning RBIs. Schlicher and Zach Moran each finished with two hits and two RBIs. Hill and Sebastian Drozdz had two hits apiece, as well. mark@buglenewspapers.com

Trojans win badminton, gymnastics sectionals

The Downers North boys gymnastics squad earned its sixth consecutive trip to this weekend’s state meet after taking first place at its own sectional on May 4.

ROUNDUP The Trojans edged out secondplace Glenbrook North, 155.6 to 147.6 for the team title.

Senior Luke Wychocki led the way for DGN, winning the allaround competition with 52.85 points, tying for first on high bar (8.95), and taking seconds in the vault (9.2), pommel horse (8.95) and floor exercise (9.55).

John Schubert finished second to his teammate in the all-around (52.80), while placing second on both the high bar (8.95) and parallel bars (8.85), and third in the floor exercise (9.5) and pommel horse (8.9). He also tied two other competitors for fifth in the vault (8.85).

Meanwhile, Strahinja Sopcic captured first on rings (8.95), was third on parallel bars (8.7) and fifth on pommel horse (8.65).

BADMINTON Downers North took first at the Andrew Sectional with 17 points and all four entries will be headed to state this weekend.

Amanda Schneeweis finished second in singles, while Karrissa Bradzys was third.

Hannah Henson and Anna Marek won the doubles title over teammates Emily Planek and Emily Buhle.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL It took three games, but Benet prevailed over Downers North a battle of area boys volleyball heavyweights, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18 on May 2.

Senior outside hitters Bobby Wehrli and Luke Ladowski were forces for Benet during the match. The duo teamed up for 31 kills—17 from Wehrli (who also had six digs) and 14 from Ladowski.

Meanwhile, Patrick Dougherty registered 34 assists and Kevin Weithers added 11 digs. Matt Conroy contributed five kills and Sawyer Yeazel had four kills and three blocks.

“That’s an outstanding team and I knew this would be an exciting match,” said Benet coach Amy Van Eekeren, referring to Downers North. “I feel like we’re on our way. I feel this is the time; we’ve been getting better and better as the season has gone on.”

Senior middle blocker J.P. Tulacka led the Trojans with 10 kills and three blocks, while fellow senior and middle blocker Quinn Lueder chipped in with six kills.

Seniors Chris George and Zack Parik compiled 15 and 12 assists, respectively, with Parik adding eight digs.

“Our serve-receive broke down,” said DGN coach Mark

Wasik. “That’s the name of the game, serve-receive. As a result we couldn’t execute very well, so they could do what they wanted to at their will. They have too good of an offense, too quality of hitters that they’re going to make you pay if you don’t execute.”

•The Mustangs knocked off one of the area’s top teams, Glenbard West, 25-18, 25-19, on May 3.Andy Kryk and Greg Garro notched nine and eight kills, respectively, for DGS. Nick Timreck added six kills, CJ Blaha had 13 assists and Jordan Pawlicki registered 11 assists.

GIRLS SOCCER The Redwings defeated Bishop McNamara, 7-1, on April 30 and Marian Catholic, 3-0, on May 2 for their 12th and 13th victories of the season, respectively.

Benet got two goals each from Carolyn Dirienzo and Jamei Borges against McNamara. In the win over Marian, the Redwings got goals from Catherine Canigli, Meaghan O’Hara and Rachel Lovely.

•Downers South won at least a share of its 11th consecutive West Suburban Gold championship on Senior Night May 3 with a 5-0 triumph over Leyden.

Jessica Bronke scored twice in the first half and Flo Beshiri added a first-half goal, as well. Beshiri assisted on Bronke’s second tally, and Emily Wauer got the assist on Beshiri’s goal. Wauer picked up another assist in the second half

on a goal by Kelly Stapleton.Sarrah Ludwig also scored on a penalty kick, and goalkeeper Cassidy Herrmann got the shutout.

The Mustangs shut out Morton 3-0 on May 1.

Following a scoreless first half, Ludwig put DGS in front, 1-0, with a goal four minutes into the second half as she headed in Beshiri’s corner kick. With 9:05 remaining, Jessica Pikul’s 30-yard free kick sailed past the Morton goalkeeper for a 2-0 DGS lead.

Beshiri netted the final Mustang goal with an assist from Tess Grannan. Herrmann stopped seven shots to post the shutout. *The Trojans blanked West Chicago, 1-0, April 30 for their fourth win in a row.DGN registered the only goal it would need in the first half as Sarah Costello scored from long range with an assist from Gianna Marconi.

Izzy Greenblatt preserved the shutout in goal. Jamie Sebo, Mary Doro, Carrie Smith and Kacey Ford were cited for their defensive efforts.

On May 1, the Trojans tied Glenbard West 1-1 at the end of regulation. The game went two overtimes,but DGN lost on penalty kicks. Goalkeeper Christina Siddu played well for the Trojans.

DGN advanced to the championship game of the West Chicago Invite on May 4, and unfortunately ended up falling 2-1 to the host Wildcats on two penalty shootouts.

Costello gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead just after halftime. Siddu

turned in another exceptional performance in goal. *Westmont came out firing against Reed-Custer on May 1, scoring three goals within a sixminute span early during the first half of its eventual 3-1 win—the Sentinels’ 10th of the season.

Jackie Zakhem, Emma Guinn and Maggie Frodin found the back of the net for Westmont during that sequence.

The Sentinels wrapped up their regular season May 3 on a successful note, blanking Plano, 5-0, behind senior Heidi Schlueter and the defense’s sixth shutout of the campaign.

The 11 victories is a new school record for the team. The Sentinels are 11-7 overall, 5-4 in the Interstate Eight.

Guinn netted a hat trick during Senior Night—two of those goals coming in the first half—while Zakhem and Liz Landes, both seniors, scored the other goals.

Landes assisted on one of Guinn’s goals, and Guinn got the assist on Landes’ tally. Frodin and Jeanna Olivia also picked up assists.

SOFTBALL The Redwings showed no rust in their first game following a week layoff, beating Carmel, 7-4, on May 3. Benet trailed 4-3 after five innings, but put up four runs in the sixth to pull ahead for good.

•The Mustangs out-slugged Willowbrook, 13-7, on April 30 behind the bats of senior standouts Katy LaCivita and Danielle Trezzo.

LaCivita went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Trezzo had a double and two RBIs. Alicia Bozek picked up her ninth win of the year on the mound.

On May 4, Trezzo went 3-for-3 and Jessie Andree had two hits in the Trojans, 6-1 WSG win over Leyden. Bozek, who was again the winning pitcher, also rapped out two hits.

•The Trojans scored four runs in both the first and sixth innings while Elaine Heflin pitched a no-

hitter in a 9-0 victory on May 3.

The no-hit gem was Heflin’s 11th victory of 2012. She rang up 17 strikeouts and faced one batter over the minimum. Samantha Yeager homered for the Trojans, her eighth of the year.

Sophomore Dale Ryndak recorded her ninth win of the season in the Trojans’ 6-0 shutout of WSS foe Oak Park-River Forest on May 4. Ryndak also clubbed a solo home run while Yeager smacked a grand slam—her 10th homer of the year.

In other news, Ryndak has made a verbal commitment to Purdue.

She’s won 20 games already for the Trojans and carries an ERA under 1.00. She’s also batting around .400.

GIRLS TRACK Downers Grove South ran away with their eighth straight

West Suburban Gold conference championship on Friday.

The Mustangs scored 169 points, crushing runner up Hinsdale South (105pts).

Senior Rebecca Stearns led the Mustang effort with three individual conference titles (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 800 run) as well as running a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team. The Mustangs came home first in both the 4x800m relay (Blake Mueller, Katrina Friedrich, Amy Rotunno, Kelly Clinnin) and the 4x400m relay (Mueller, Clinnin, Raven Wilson, Stearns).

DGS showed some distance dominance as they swept the top spots in every distance race.

Junior pitcher not afraid to throw inside

Fearless.

That is the one thing that separates Downers Grove South pitcher Brian Glowicki from his counterparts.

SPOTLIGHT What Glowicki lacks in size or speed or command, he makes up with the fact that he is not afraid to give up a hit or hit the batter.

“He commands three pitches and he pitches inside,” said Downers Grove South coach Darren Orel. “In high school baseball, that is so important to not be afraid of hitting a batter. Brian has hit like eight or 10 guys this year. He hit a guy (in his last start against Downers Grove North) when the count was 0-2 with two outs and nobody on. It gets a little frustrating at times, but he has been so focused on that and that opens the other side of the plate. That has been really good for us.”

Orel said Glowicki’s command and fearlessness allow him to dominate a game without being a true dominant pitcher.

“I still don’t think he is a dominant pitcher,” Orel said.

“But he dominates by being a pitcher. His fastball is only in the upper 80s, low 90s, so he is not going to just blow it by you. . He tries to pitch to contact and he has more sink on his fastball this year and gets ground balls.”

This year, he has allowed a total of five runs, with an earned run average less one. He has six walks and 66 strikeouts all year.

He beat North 4-0, giving him two six-inning shutouts in a row. Against the cross-town rivals, Glowicki allowed only four singles, striking out nine and walking one batter.

“I have been hitting my spots and keeping the ball low and keeping hitters off guard, “Glowicki said. “I just try and get the outs. I am not a strike out pitcher. I try and work away from the hitter, pitch to contact and work away from the meat of the bat and I try and get the

weak ground ball.”

The transformation for Glowicki came when he hooked up with pitching coach John Parpet.

“Brian latched onto him going into his sophomore year,” Orel said.“We have had talented kids here, but (Parpet) has taught them to be consistent.We didn’t bring Brian up right away last year because I didn’t think he had this in him.Then Nick Burdi got hurt and he came up and he had three or four good starts for us and then he worked hard in the summer.”

Glowicki knew the hard work

would pay off.

“I worked so hard in the offseason to get my arm strength up and with that comes more velocity and I can get it past some people,” Glowicki said. “Mixing in the off speed pitches keep them off balance.”

No one could be happier than Orel.

Minooka takes 20th in state

After placing 19th in the state a year ago, the Minooka bass fishing team just wanted to better their season this year.

BASS FISHING While the Indians placed 20th this year, coach Stan Tischer was happy with the performance.

“We caught our limit both days,” Tischer said. “We just didn’t catch the big fish. This is the first year we have ever caught our limit of fish and any time you can catch your limit it is good.”

In the boat for Minooka was a pair of juniors in Dan Scott and Austin Akers.

“Dan has been three times,” Tischer said. “He was alternate twice and he has practiced on that lake one time each year, but we really don’t get a lot of time on the lake.The coaches got out there one weekend this year to go along over the water.”

The alternates, sophomore Jenny Harris and freshman Grant Ferbend, this season were also underclassmen, so all four fishers will be back next year.

Minooka caught 11.1 pounds of fish each day, but had a penalty on the second day for a dead fish and ended the tournament with 21.10 pounds.

“We were catching on spinner bait, crank bait and soft plastics,” Tischer said. “We had a lot of bites and caught a lot of fish, we never got the big ones.

We needed that one four, five pound category.”

Tischer said that aside from the competition on the water, the kids have a lot of chances to interact with their peers.

“We go down Thursday and the state has a big banquet for everybody,” Tischer said. “And then the one night we all go

to an all-you-can eat crab legs place. It’s just a really good time.”

To get to state, Minooka won the Heideke Lake Sectional with a total weight of 8.64 pounds.

Scott reeled in the top fish, weighing in at 2.72 pounds.

Locally, Plainfield Central was fourth (3.68 pounds) and Downers Grove South was fifth (3.66).

Minooka’s second boat was sixth with 3.42, while Plainfield North (2.28) was ninth and Romeoville (1.60) rounded out

the top 10.

Joliet West placed fifth at the Braidwood Lake Sectional with a total weight of 9.99 pounds.

The other truth is that if you do not take breaks for deep rest, good food, exercise and personal relationships, the quality of work you do will suffer greatly.

Much research has been done on the effect workaholism has on productivity. The research indicates that people who work

balanced schedules get more done at a higher quality than people who work around the clock.

The fear most people have about setting limits in their workplace is they will be fired if they dare not to sacrifice themselves. There are bosses who will fire you if you don’t enthusiastically give up everything for your career. If you have such a job, run, don’t walk to get another job. As you advance, your boss will just expect more.

Instead, once you have a job offer, inquire about options such as working at home, getting home by dinner, and vacation breaks. One of my clients recently joined a workaholic team and made sure before she took the job she could leave by 4:30 p.m. to see her kids.

If you didn’t negotiate before you took the job, list your life balance priorities, approach your boss, and sell him or her on how they will benefit if you restructure your schedule.

Remember, your boss and your company just want your job done. If you creatively figure out how to deliver results, your boss won’t care if you take care of yourself.
