Benedictine University equipped to save lives with ‘StormReady’ program Benedictine University is more prepared to protect life and property from the onslaught of severe storms, tornadoes, blizzards and floods than other colleges and universities across the nation, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The University recently upgraded its communication and emergency weather monitoring systems, making it one of five institutions of higher learning in Illinois and 111 across the country to receive the prestigious designation as a StormReady University from the NWS. StormReady is a grassroots program sponsored by the NWS that focuses on improving communication and severe weather preparedness in communities. It helps community leaders and emergency managers strengthen local hazard mitigation and emergency response plans. Becoming a StormReady University means Benedictine has a 24-hour system for receiving National Weather Service reports, monitors other weather information sources, and has access

to radar or other meteorological instruments to measure local hydrological conditions. The University also has several ways of communicating warnings to the Benedictine community, provides a proactive preparedness program to teach the local community how to spot inclement weather, and has an NWS approved hazardous weather action plan in place, according to Jim Allsopp, warning coordination meteorologist for the NWS. “The National Weather Service encourages all communities and universitiestobecomeStormReady,” Allsopp said.“Tornadoes and severe storms can strike anywhere and with little notice, and it is important for Benedictine University to be prepared and have a severe weather plan in place. It’s essential for all communities to disseminate warnings as quickly as possible.” Nearly 90 percent of all federallydeclared disasters are the product of bad weather, leading to about 500 deaths and $14 billion in damage each year, according to the NWS. “The purpose of this program

is to keep the community safe,” said Michi Dubes, emergency preparedness manager/safety specialist for Benedictine. “Having this designation just means we have all of our ducks in a row. Those emergency preparedness qualifications that we need to have – we have those and then some.” Before the StormReady designation, the University used NWS alerts to keep an eye on severe weather and communicated warnings through the University’s public address system, emergency contact lists, weather siren and website. In 2010, Benedictine launched BenAlert,an emergency notification system that enables students, faculty and staff to receive alerts and notifications within minutes by phone, text or email message regarding emergency situations affecting the University. University staff also installed

weather radios in every campus building and trained Benedictine University Police how to use AccuWeather SkyGuard – a Webbased, weather-mapping tool that uses the latest Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology and provides access to a team of professional meteorologists who can provide accurate,site-specific local weather data. “They can contact us and let us know about certain conditions that are likely to cause severe weather events like high wind, tornadoes, thunderstorms, lightning and more,” Dubes said. “Now we have a more efficient system of communicating and notifying the community of severe weather or imminent danger. Before you had all of these things going on, but they all weren’t necessarily tied together. Now with StormReady, it brings it all together.”

Barth Pond in Patriot’s Park on May 20, 1998 to honor the only fallen officer in Downers Grove. This memorial serves as a constant reminder that violence is everywhere and even the community of Downers Grove is not immune. On March 18, 1974, Barth had responded to a call of two suspicious youths carrying a paper bag into what is now known as Hooper’s Hollow Park. As Barth approached the youths, he was not aware that they had just committed a residential burglary in the area and were viewing the proceeds. When Barth requested identification, one of the youths, Paul Fontani, fatally shot him. Paul Fontani pled guilty to murder and received a 50-100-year prison term.

Gentle Giant Pets are very important to people. I can speak of dogs. I have first hand knowledge of one named “Cody.” Any type of pet can help people. Dogs in general help lonely seniors, service disable persons, help police, firefighters and veterans. They bring comfort and joy to sick children. Pets are true friends. The gentle giant that I write about is Cody. He has beautiful blue eyes. He is a siberian husky. He is now two years old and weighs about 751bs. He loves people and is very friendly. I am “grandma” to him. When he knows he is coming to visit me he goes for his leash.Upon arrival he gives me a much appreciated kiss. When his two owners go to work, they give him a treat. They then put on cartoons (softly)

on the TV - so he does not feel alone. He also enjoys sleeping with his owners. I read stories on how dogs or pets have saved lives. I believe this. Most homes in our country have some type of pet. They are true friends. They teach us many things. Our veterans with posttraumatic stress or some type of physical (loss of limbs, etc.) are helped greatly by dogs. They deserve our “unconditional” love. They give back so much more. Our humane society needs people to “adopt” a pet. They are wonderful companions to anyone (young or old) that is in need of true friendship. Shirlee J.Pergler Romeoville

Mulberry Child depicts author’s struggle, daughter’s acceptance of Chinese heritage Though only eight-years-old at the time, Jian Ping recalls vividly the insults and rocks that assailed her as she made her way to see her beaten, publicly humiliated and imprisoned father. She remembers how her mother, a school administrator, was paraded in public and also thrown in prison, and how her family was forced to live in a mud house without heat, water or toilet. To say that life was far from pleasant for Ping (Jennifer Hou Kwong) and her family is an understatement, as she reveals in the heart-wrenching true story of a childhood ravaged by an oppressive communist regime in her book, “Mulberry Child: A Memoir of China.” Ping was born soon after Mao Zedong’s “Great Leap Forward,” where millions starved to death, and grew up during the Cultural Revolution from 1966-76 when Mao empowered youth to persecute anyone they wanted. No one was safe. The Women’s Institute for Global Leadership at Benedictine University will hold a screening of the movie, “Mulberry Child,” from 6:00-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22 in Rooms 102 and 103 of the The Margaret and Harold Moser Center at 1832 Centre Point Circle in Naperville. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the author. The event is open to the Benedictine community and general public. Admission is $10 and refreshments will be served. Based on Ping’s book, the film depicts her childhood and her struggles later in life to connect with her Americanraised daughter, Lisa. During the Beijing Olympics, Lisa travels with her mother to China to visit her dying grandfather, Hou Kai. It is on this journey that Lisa

finally reads “Mulberry Child.” Tracing her family’s history, Lisa begins to see her mother in a different light and accepts her own heritage. Filled with dramatic reenactments, historical records and moving interviews, the movie explores the human capacity for courage and endurance, and reveals how the events of the past haunt our future. “Mulberry Child” was selected “Best of the Fest” at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and is the winner of the 2012 Special Jury Prize for Achievement in Writing at the Nashville Film Festival. Film critic Roger Ebert described the movie as “a powerful and touching film” and awarded it three-and-a-half stars in a Chicago Sun-Times review. “The mulberry tree is a tough tree that thrives in unfavorable conditions,” Ping said. “From my grandparents struggling against poverty to my parents enduring hardship and maintaining their integrity in the face of political persecution, the spirit and triumph of resilience was the core of their survival and success. “My siblings and I, growing up during the Cultural Revolution, learned to cherish this spirit from them,” Ping added.“Like the mulberry tree,we didn’t succumb to the traumatic experiences we were subjected to. We thrived and became stronger.” Ping earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Jilin University, Changchun, China, and dual master’s degrees in Film and International Affairs from Ohio University. She worked in Beijing for four years before coming to the United States to pursue graduate studies in 1986. Her publications include “A Fool’s Paradise,”

“Chinese Film Theory” and a collection of translated short stories by Isaac Bashevis Singer. Ping was a working mother in the corporate world in Chicago for 20 years before

establishing her own company, MoraQuest LLC, a firm focusing on bridging cultural differences and publishing books on crosscultural issues with an emphasis on China. She is a public speaker

and has given talks on topics related to China, women’s leadership and immigrant assimilation at business organizations, special interest groups, schools and universities.

Listen to the rhythms of the earth and get grounded. In the week to come you may shrink back from those who are more energetic, outgoing or ambitious than you are. Daydreams distract from real issues.

Downers Grove North senior Luke Wychocki is an aide in the athletic office during second period. Every day this year as he helps in the office, he has stared at the lone state trophy earned by the boys gymnastics team and he every day he has wanted to get another one to share the case with the third place trophy they got last year. “All I thought about all year was state gymnastics and winning another trophy. I literally looked at the trophy case and wanted another one,” Wychocki said. “I wanted it, I dreamed about it and I was going get another one. I took a picture of it two days ago, so I knew what I wanted to get.” Wychocki led the Trojans to do just that, as North placed third overall at the state meet with 155.35 points. The Wheaton Co-op program won the state title with 160.80 points and the LincolnWay Co-op placed second with 157.45. North scored 27.30 points on the floor exercise, 24.850 on the pommel horse, 24.00 on the rings, 27.00 on the parallel bars and 26.40 on the horizontal bars. “Everyone said Downers Grove North was not going to get it done this year, but we shoved their foots in their mouths and proved them all wrong,” Wychocki said.“A lot of the underclassmen stepped

up and we got another trophy.” One of those underclassmen, sophomore Strahinja Sopcic was happy to step up. “We took an aggressive run at it,” he said.“We wanted to get first and that is what we shot for. We may have missed the moon, but we hit the stars and I am pretty happy with that.” Individually, Wychocki was tied for sixth in the all-around with Tyler Leahy of Hinsdale South with 52.35 points. “I was more worried in the team,” Wychocki said.“I cared more about the team than I did about my all-around. I finished 11th last year and I just wanted a top 10 so I was a place higher. I cared more about hitting the routines for my team than I did for myself.” Wychocki finished fifth on the horizontal bars with a score of 8.90 and was sixth on the pommel horse in 9.050. Sophomore Strahinja Sopcic was ninth in the overall all-around with 51.95 points. “It feels great to place (in the top 10),” Sopcic said. “It feels really good, but I was really more worried about the team score.” He placed fourth individually in the rings with an 8.95 After finishing 12th in the all-around with a score of 50.75, junior John Schubert earned the most individual

Lots of locals state-bound By Scott Taylor Sports Reporter

Last Thursday’s Downers Grove North Sectional was about comebacks. There were several of them throughout the night, including a few from the Downers schools.

GIRLS TRACK At the end of the night Downers South’s Rebecca Stearns closed things out in style, rallying to lead the 1,600-meter relay team to victory over Downers North with a time of 3:59.74.The Trojans advanced to state as well with a time of 3:59.89. Stearns showed the flair for the comeback earlier in the night when she was in second at the first lap and ran away with the 800 with a time of 2:16.98. “I’m used to starting behind someone and passing them in the end,” Stearns said.“I freaked out for a second, but I got my confidence back and I knew I could do it. I had a strong kick and I did what I

knew I could do.” Now she hopes to improve on her performance at state last year. “After last year I had a ton of confidence,” Stearns stated. “I barely made it last year. This year I’ve been running times I never got last year. I’m so much more confident and really excited for state. My goal is to get top five (at state). I got seventh last year. The school record is a 2:14 so I’m looking to get that. I want to go out with a bang.” One of her teammates joining her at state is Jada Franklin, who qualified in the triple jump (370.5). “It’s really exciting,”Franklin said. “I’ve been trying to get to state the past two years and I finally got it. My coach has been telling me to hold the second phase and that’s what I did. I set a new (PR) and I’m really excited.” Franklin thinks she can take things to the next level this weekend at state at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. See LOCALS, page 14

LOCALS Continued from page 12 “My next goal is 38,” Franklin added. “I’m trying to follow my sister (Tori’s) footsteps. I have to go call my sister.” Also advancing to state for the Mustangs was the 3,200 relay (9:27.6), Katie Strelau in the 3,200 (5:17.28) and Amanda Thate in the 1,600 (5:14.42). Meanwhile, Downers North’s Stephanie Urbancik rallied down the stretch to beat teammate Rebecca Ridderhoff in the 400 with a time of 58.98. Ridderhoff finished in 59.18 and will also be headed to state. “Last week I got second and had a big kick at the end,” Urbancik said. “I knew if I stayed closer to her, I could outkick anybody pretty much. It feels good.” Urbancik teamed with Gabby Hesslau, Meghan Bonfield and Jillian Kothanek to win the 3,200 relay with a time of 9:21.63. All but Bonfield ran in the 3,200 relay at state last year, where they were state champs. Bonfield was

an alternate. “I’m excited and really happy,” Urbancik said. “I think we should go in trying to win it, but we just need to try to do our best.” “It will be hard to win it, but we’re definitely trying to make finals and take it from there,” Hesslau stated.“We definitely have it in us.A good goal for us would be to go under 9:15. We’re all familiar with the state experience.” Also qualifying for the Trojans wereTess Johnson in the long jump (17-10) and triple jump (36-1) and Hesslau in the 1,600 (5:12.5). Benet also had a pair of sectional champions on the evening. I’m really happy.” Now she hopes to make it to

Sports Saturday. “Last year I was kind of like a deer caught in the headlights of going to state,” Cadman said. “I didn’t do too well. This year I know what I am up for. I want to make it to finals and then make it on the stand to medal.” Also winning was Anne Yahiro in the triple jump (37-2.5) after missing out in the high jump. “I’m pretty happy,” Yahiro said. “I was kind of upset over the long jump, but I had to let it go. Business & Real Estate

Listen for heart of message Q. I have a coworker who is always giving me advice and trying to help me. I am good at what I do and tired of being insulted by this condescension. How do I get him to back off and quit assuming I’m incompetent? A.You can get him to back off by examining your own assumptions about your coworker and not automatically assuming he’s thinking you’re inept. Consider your workplace as a melting pot of different family positions and patterns. Your coworker may well be an oldest child who is accustomed to showing support to people he likes by providing help.Notice that the only motivation you attribute to your coworker right now is he’s trying to insult you. Ask yourself how often in your workplace you assume other people think you don’t know what you’re doing. If we pay attention to what makes us huffy at work, we’ll usually find a theme to what upsets us.

If many situations at work that make you mad are about you believing that others think you’re incompetent, you may be consistently misinterpreting people in your workplace. The truth is that most people, most of the time, act the way they do because of what is going on in their world - not because of what they think of you! Imagine that everyone you work with is inside their own snow globe. Now imagine the outside of most people’s snow globes are painted black so they can’t see inside the snow globe of others. You now have a more accurate picture of your workplace. What everyone does is not about you. If you don’t want the help of your coworker (or anyone else),

try assuming he is attempting to be benevolent rather than invasive. Next time he attempts to assist, tell him privately that he is generous to take his time to help. Add that you’ve found it works better for you to do these projects alone as you can track them better. When we make negative assumptions about the motivations of others in our workplace,we have a hard time getting our coworkers to change. We tend to “share” our perception of why our coworker is doing the behavior we don’t like. Then we have the problem that our coworker is now insulted by our hostile assumptions about them. Instead, next time you are bothered by the actions of coworkers, deliberately contemplate possible innocent or positive motivations for their behavior. Now consider how you would ask them to change if you didn’t need to vent about their evil intentions.
