FIELD SET FOR JOLIET Hamlin, Hendrick lead Chase hopefuls By Mark Gregory Sports Reporter

A

fter two rain delays and tons of drama at Richmond International Raceway, the field is finally set for the Chase for the Sprint Cup, which begins Sunday in Joliet at the Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. Jeff Gordon edged out Kyle Busch for the second and final wild card position, as Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne took the first spot, giving HMS all four cars in the Chase. “We missed,” Busch said.“That’s it.” Busch’s teammate Denny Hamlin, who heads into the Chase as the top seed, said it was unfortunate his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate did not make the top 12. “It sucks to not have Kyle in the Chase,” Hamlin said. “It’s important for JGR to have cars in the Chase. It is Joe and J.D. (Gibbs) livelihood, they don’t really have other businesses outside of this, so they need cars in the Chase to make a living. It is tough, but now it is up to us to go out and try and get them a championship with one of their cars.” With four wins on the season, Hamlin looks to Joliet to kick off a title run. Kenseth focused despite distractions By Mark Gregory Sports Reporter

Since the beginning of the NASCAR season, Matt Kenseth has been in the lime light. The veteran driver won the Daytona 500 to kick off the season and four months later, he announced he would leave RoushFenway Racing after 13 full Cup seasons, where he has won 22 races, two Daytona 500s, and the 2003 NASCAR championship. With his contract expiring after this season, Kenseth’s decision had been made prior to the announcement in June. “Once we got out of Kentucky (and made the announcement), I think it was a relief,” he said earlier this year. “The tough part for me was the month and a half before that, trying to work through all that and figure everything out. I think it is only a distraction if you let it become one. I think it is business as usual. It doesn’t change this season as far as what our goals are and how

hard we work toward the goals of winning races and winning a championship. It doesn’t really change anything in my mind. We have been there a long time and had agreed to race through 2012, so the only thing that changes is what we will be doing in 2013 and beyond.” Kenesth’s plans for 2013 were unveiled last week in a press conference announcing he would take over the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota for Joe Gibbs racing. It is a car most recently driven by Joey Logano for the past four years, but made famous by Tony Stewart. “It is a big day for us and it is exciting for us,” said Joe Gibbs.“In this sport you need someone who can really wheel it and make it go. And now, we are so excited about next year having Kyle (Busch) and Denny (Hamlin) and Matt now. I can honestly tell you everyone is excited about next year.” So is Kenseth. “I am really excited to be See KENSETH, page 15

Volunteers sought in Westmont Both advisory and emergency management positions sought By Robin Ambrosia Staff Reporter

TheVillage ofWestmont is seeking residents who might be interested in serving as community volunteers on village-appointed advisory boards or commissions. “We have a number of boards, commissions and even ad hoc committees that depend on the volunteer services of our residents,” says Village Manager Ron Searl.“At this time, we’re soliciting feedback from residents who might be interested in serving the community in these important volunteer roles.” In addition, volunteers are needed to assist with other organizations such as theWestmont Emergency Management Agency and the Westmont Special Events Corporation. “While we don’t have specific committee openings, we will determine through the interview process where the volunteer’s express interest and passions lie,” said Westmont Media Relations Coordinator Larry

“While we don’t have specific committee openings, we will determine through the interview process where the volunteer’s express interest and passions lie,” Westmont Media Relations Coordinator Larry McIntyre McIntyre.“But, the WEMA is one definite area of need.” The WEMA maintains an emergency operations center during times of emergency or disaster as well as supplies supplemental manpower, communications and emergency lighting for such incidents and events. While there is a full-time director along with

the several part-time positions, volunteers are utilized for local operations including traffic and crowd control at major village events and fire, police or weather-related incidents. “Community volunteers get trained to assist our professional emergency service personnel for a variety of situations and duties,” said McIntyre.“After these volunteers are trained, they can be called to duty when an emergency arises.” Members must complete training courses required by the U.S.Department of Homeland Security and are required to have training for the National Incident Management System. In addition to training at the federal level, volunteers are trained in basic first aid, CPR, workplace and home safety as well as severe weather training. Volunteers also receive hands-on training in traffic control, phone and radio operations, and emergency equipment operation. The Westmont Fire Department hosts a Citizens Fire Academy that is not affiliated

with the WEMA. “Academies are designed for residents to learn more about the firefighting and rescue operations through hands-on experience,” said McIntyre. “It’s more of a good will program.” Additionally, WEMA supports and distributes severe weather alerts to all the schools in Westmont and Amber Alerts for missing children nationwide. WEMA works with the DuPage County Office of Emergency Management. The Westmont Special Events Committee assists the community in the development, promotion and execution of various special events such as the Taste of Westmont, Cruisin’ Nights and the Road Rally. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available including open committee positions. Downers Grove hosts 2nd annual town hall meeting on reliability with ComEd By Robin Ambrosia Staff Reporter

During last week’s Downers Grove Village Board meeting, an ordinance was on the active agenda for a four-hour parking provision on Elm Street from Prairie Avenue to Chicago Avenue which would be consistent with adjacent streets. Elm Street residents have requested the parking ordinance due to its close proximity to the train station. Because this section of Elm Street has no restrictions in place, commuters utilize it for unlimited, free parking. The ordinance was approved to restrict parking on both sides of Elm Street between Prairie Avenue and Chicago Avenue. Village Attorney Enza Petrarca proposed an ordinance to update the liquor license classifications and definitions. “Several definitions have been added or revised to clarify the requirements while several classifications have been added or revised to simplify,” said

Petrarca. “It’s important to note that none of the requirements or restrictions have been changed.” During the Mayor’s Report, Mayor Martin Tully indicated an upcoming ComEd town hall meeting to be held at 7 p.m. on September 20 at the Park District Recreation Center, 4500 Belmont Road. “We have been working with ComEd to enhance and improve the electrical service in Downers Grove,” said Tully. “This was brought about by the unusual weather events of last year which caused extraordinary and protracted outages in the community.” The first town hall meeting with ComEd senior executives was held in 2011. “Last year, we had a very successful town hall meeting with senior executives from ComEd that led to a lot of improvements,” said Tully. “Prior to this second meeting, the village will release an updated reliability report indicating areas that progress have been made

but also areas where progress has yet to be made.” The village has informed the Chamber of Commerce of the upcoming meeting. “We have reached out to ensure the business community is represented at this meeting,” said Tully. “We have made an extra effort to reach out to them because they are equally represented.” The village has been asking for residents who expressed an issue or problem last year to let them know if the problem has been addressed, according to Tully. During the new business portion, Tully recommended appointments to village boards and commissions. “We have a number of engaged, active, dedicated residents who serve on a variety of village commissions or boards,” said Tully. Brett Webster and Philip Matejczyk were recommended for re-appointment while Anastasia Urban was introduced

for appointment on the planning commission. “Ms. Urban is a planner in another community which will bring a particular expertise to our board,” said Tully. Current planning commissioner member Greg Jose was recommended to be the planning commission chairman replacing retiring current chairman Allen Jirik. “We will be celebrating the service of Allen Jirik,” said Tully. “Allen is synonymous to the planning commission having long served as its chair.

Tully reflected on former village volunteers. “But, no one ever really retires from Downers Grove, you just move around to someplace else,” said Tully. The village of Downers Grove appoints one current junior representing Downers Grove North and another from Downers Grove South to a one-year term on a board or commission. Justine Hung was appointed to the Environment Commission while Crystal Loehman was appointed to the Transportation and Parking Commission.

Child abuse suspect back in court By Robin Ambrosia Staff Reporter

Rudolph Figueroa, 45, will return to court September 19 after pleading not guilty to the charges of child pornography, sex abuse, sex assault, solicitation of a child and grooming in connection to incidents. It is alleged that Figueroa exchanged text messages and spoke to his victim on several occasions from at least March 21 through June 2, 2012. It is further alleged on several occasions Figueroa carried on sexually explicit conversations and texts with the girl, whom he had originally contacted on the Internet after responding to YouTube videos she had posted, knowing she was 13 years old, according to DuPage County States Attorney’s office. “At the next court date, an order of discovery will be determined for each side to turn over information and documents accumulated so far,” said Paul Darrah, spokesperson for DuPage County States Attorney’s office. Then another date may be set for filing any motions depending on if the defender continues to plead not guilty and how the judge wants to proceed. “After that, each side will begin preparing for their case,” said

Darrah. In June, Rudolph Figueroa, 45 (d.o.b. 11/26/1966) of Corpus Christi, Texas, appeared in Bond Court in front of Judge James Orel who set bail at $250,000 with 10% to apply. According to Darrah, no bail was posted for Figueroa. “There is no doubt that advances in technology have changed the way we communicate,” Berlin said. “When used responsibly, the Internet, texting, instant messaging and other forms of electronic communication can be a great way to keep in touch with family and friends. But this technology also allows for anonymity that child sexual predators use to their advantage.” Someone who says they are a 15-year-old boy or girl may in reality be a child sexual predator looking for their next victim. Since parents cannot monitor their children’s cell phone usage 24 hours a day, it is imperative that they teach their children how to be careful and cautious when communicating over the Internet, through texts, emails and even telephone calls with people they have not met in person.” Berlin acknowledges all the police departments who worked together to identify Figueroa and bring him back to Illinois for charges. “I would like to thank the

DownersGrovePoliceDepartment, particularly Detective Thayer, the Corpus Christi Police Department and the Greater Houston Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force for their assistance and fine work in this case,” said Berlin. “I would also like to thank DuPage Assistant State’s Attorney Jeffrey Muntz for his ongoing work in combating those who would harm our children.” Downers Grove Police Chief Robert Porter states his opinion on those who target young people. “I am very proud of the teamwork that went into this investigation and also the multijurisdictional cooperation that we received in this matter,” Downers Grove Police Chief Robert Porter said. “We will not tolerate those who wish to prey on the young and vulnerable children of our community and we will use all the legal means necessary to bring those who wish to violate the law to justice. This case was a prime example of that.” According to the DuPage State’s Attorney’s office, members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Women in Business programs offer unique networking By Robin Ambrosia Staff Reporter

Many local Chambers of Commerce offer a program, Women in Business, that provides leadership, development, mentoring and education opportunities geared directly for women. “WIB began several years ago, acknowledging that women network differently than men do. We have different issues, different networking styles, and different goals,” said Fran Strohm, Woodridge Chamber’s WIB committee chairwoman and

owner of Strohm Consulting. The WIB events include speakers covering a broad range of topics that affect women in business along with a variety of women-only networking events in a small group environment. “The majority of our events are luncheons. Sometimes there is a speaker and sometimes it is a progressive networking luncheon where we change tables for the three course meal which gives everyone the opportunity to meet new people at each table,” said Strohm. The Woodridge Chamber WIB is hosting the second

annual Progressive Networking Luncheon for women from the Downers Grove, Elmhurst and Lemont Chambers. The multichamber event will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.,Thursday, September 20, at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge. Attendees do not need to be a chamber member to participate. According to Strohm, other noteworthy events for women have been meet the candidates, cinco de bunco, a fun night playing bunco while networking along with speakers See WIB, page 8

Advances in treatments for Multiple Sclerosis After watching Ann Romney’s speech at the Republican Convention, I was impressed by how healthy this survivor of Breast Cancer and Multiple Sclerosis appeared on camera. Chronic illness is extremely difficult to hide. She must be doing as well as she looks. Her breast cancer is under control by all accounts, but what about her Multiple Sclerosis? Isn’t MS a chronic devastating disease? To be sure, there are still those unfortunate people who are profoundly affected by this disease. But for the majority of sufferers, new medical treatments have vastly improved their prospects. MS is considered an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks normal body tissues. This internal “civil war” can affect many tissues. When joints are attacked, it’s called Rheumatoid Arthritis; when blood vessels are attacked is typically called Lupus;

and when brain tissue is attacked, it is called Multiple Sclerosis. T h e presentation for MS can affect almost any neurological f u n c t i o n . It can affect motor nerves causing muscle weakness or spasm. It can attack sensory nerves affecting vision changes, numbness, bladder control, or pain. Curiously, intelligence is not affected. The specific cause is not known. Women are affected twice as often as men. A possible infectious cause has been considered as it has a particular geographical distribution. It occurs with increasing frequency as you near the poles, and less frequently as you approach the equator. For years the only treatment

had been steroids. This therapy has modest benefit, but was accompanied by significant side effects. The treatment was often worse than the disease. The next advance was Interferon. The drugs Avonex and Betaferon were introduced in the 1990’s. These biological modifiers regulate the body’s immune system to have an antiinflammatory effect. These drugs were more effective, but the side effects were still significant. They would cause lassitude, weakness, and a protracted flulike reaction. The most serious side effect is an unexplained, profound depression. The last ten years have seen an explosion in new medications. In general, they are much more effective, and have significantly fewer side effects. In fact, they can be taken for years at a time, with minor side effects, and the potential to return to normal activity. Unfortunately, they are

not curative. For this reason they are considered disease-modifying therapy (DMT). They include: • Copaxone: its mechanism is not fully understood. It may act like a vaccine for white cells that mediate inflammation • Mitoxantrone: this is actually a chemotherapy drug which in smaller doses affects the same white blood cells that mediate inflammation • Tysabri: this drug’s effect on MS has been stupendous. Patients with terrible disease have frequently shown remarkable levels of recovery, and can remain so for years if they stay on therapy. It appears to limit the ability of white cells to migrate into brain tissue where they do their damage. What’s the catch? This drug causes a condition similar to MS called PML. PML is caused by a virus that can activate from a dormant state when on long term Tysabri.

This is rare. It occurs in one in 500-1000 patients. • Fingolimod: relatively new. Its place in treatment is not yet certain. Doctor’s Rx: Multiple Sclerosis no longer has the terrible prognosis of inescapable slow decline and death. Although it cannot yet be cured, with proper treatment, a normal or near normal life can be attained. If you know an MS sufferer who has given up on treatment, believing that no effective therapy exits, they maybe pleasantly surprised. They may one day wed a presidential candidate, or run for president themselves! Dr. Christopher Rose, M.D. is a physician and author based in Niles, Illinois. The perfection of being imperfcet QUESTION: Hey Sondra, I would like to know if there is anything I can do to minimize the size of my nose, without having to get a nose job? ANSWER: Cosmetics are a great way to enhance one’s natural beauty as well as correct any imperfections you want to fix. With that being said, I would like to first address my issue with today’s status quo in beauty. In today’s society more and more pressure is being put on young women to adhere to the stick-figured, airbrushed, cookie cutter model type, as their role models. This pressure leads to low self-esteem, poor body image, and possibly dangerous eating disorders. This has to stop. Too much effort is wasted on trying to achieve the impossible.True beauty is subjective, it’s a personal opinion. True beauty is not a computer generated photograph of a woman who’s body type only makes up a small percentage of the female population. Please remember that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and it is only how you see yourself that is important, not how you think others might want to see you. Before you think about surgically altering anything on your body, it’s

important to consider if it’s because there is a medical reason, or the reason is to make yourself more attractive to others. There are a lot of risks in surgically altering any part

of your body. In my opinion I find it obtuse to go to such great lengths to needlessly change one’s body image, for the sake of what the fashion industry wants to deem beautiful at the time. Choosing cosmetics to minimize the size of your nose can be done, use a concealor stick two shades darker than your skin tone. Apply to all area’s you want to recede. If

you want to slim the width of your nose apply it to the sides. Then proceed to apply your foundation, and then finishing powder.Another way to take the emphasis off your nose is to play up your eyes. Make them the focal point of your face. There are many beautiful women with larger noses, two come to mind right away. Barbra Streisand, and Cher. Both talented

women are not your stereotypical beauties, yet they are stunning. To me the commonology in both these women is confidence. There is nothing more beautiful than a woman who is confident in who she is. here’s no doubt Benet junior kicker John Duvic has a strong enough leg to boot a 50-yard field goal— the distance he faced while lining up for a potential gamewinning kick in the closing seconds of the Redwings’ East Suburban Catholic Conference matchup vs. St. Patrick Saturday afternoon. A northwest breeze also lined up against Duvic and the Redwings at Hanson Stadium when Duvic sent his kick towards the uprights with five seconds left. It wasn’t a strong wind, but it arguably could have factored into the ball falling just a few yards short of the cross bar as time ran out. How short? Benet head coach Pat New asked an official afterwards. “He said he missed it by about four yards,” said New, whose team slipped to 2-1, 0-1 following its 17-16 defeat. “He was doing it (kicking 50-yarders) during pregame and he made it from there. Even though it was into the wind, he had the foot for it.” But the wind wasn’t a concern throughout the day for Benet’s passing game and 6-6 sophomore quarterback Jack Beneventi, who carved up St. Patrick’s secondary, completing 24 of 37 for 329 yards and two touchdowns. “Our guys played hard,” New said.“I thought our sophomore quarterback played well and our receivers caught the ball well. We just have to come back now and recover from this and rebound from this.” Beneventi floated one of his TD passes over the shoulder of senior Jack Euritt, who made the catch and put the Redwings in front, 10-7, with 15 seconds left before intermission. The play covered 16 yards. Earlier in the second quarter, Duvic’s 21-yard field goal

pulled the Redwings to within 7-3 of the Shamrock, who scored on the game’s opening drive. Benet marched to St. Patrick’s 11-yard line on its first offensive series of the second half, but unfortunately turned the ball over on a fumble. The Shamrocks capitalized with a 31-yard field goal by Juan Gonzalez to knot the score at 10-10. The Redwings again knocked at the door on their next series as a Beneventi-to-Porter Ontko pass covering 51 yards put them at the Shamrocks’ 10-yard line. Two incomplete passes then left Benet with a third-and-goal situation. On the next play, Shamrocks defensive back Nick Sandowski hit Beneventi from behind. The ball popped out of Beneventi’s hand and into the hands of St. Patrick’s Joe Bailey, who took it the other way 82 yards for a touchdown and a 17-10 lead. “I told my team that was my fault,” New said. “It was a terrible call; I should have run a stronger protection. We didn’t do it and they blitzed. They made a big play off of it and that’s a 10-point turnaround right there.” Benet battled back and crept to within 17-16 just 42 seconds into the fourth quarter following Beneventi’s screen pass to Nick McTarnaghan, who barreled into the end zone from 16 yards out. Purple banners recognizing past state champions hang from the north wall at Downers North’s pool, along with lists of school record-holders.

SWIMMING One name, Sims, dominates that wall. Burke Sims and his sister, Haley, both of whom currently swim at Stanford University, each won state titles in previous seasons. The newest member of the Sims clan to have a banner honoring her state championship is Gabby, a junior who took the crown in the 100-yard backstroke at last season’s meet. Gabby and twin sister, Maddy— herself a fifth-place finisher at state in the 200 freestyle—team up once again this season for the Trojans. And that means double trouble for DGN’s foes. “We’ve been very fortunate,” said Trojans coach Judy Busse. “They’re great role models, they train hard and they’re just great contributors when it comes to (getting team) points, that’s for sure.” But Downers North isn’t exclusively Sims City. The Trojans’ lineup is chock-full of talent from top to bottom. “That’s just always huge when you have such a young team and they’re back and they’re still young,” Busse said. “Our talent pool is really focused in probably the sophomore or junior levels.

Mike Sandrolini/Bugle Staff

Maddy Sims, a junior, placed fifth at state last year in the 200-yard freestyle, and also reached the 100 butterfly final. In addition, she was part of two DGN All-State relay teams: the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

But we do have some seniors that are definitely going to be producing this year as well.” Jen Gockman and Hannah Kaufmann are among those seniors. Kaufmann joined the Sims sisters and sophomore Gabriele Serniute to form the Trojans’ 400 freestyle relay team that took fourth at state. DGN’s sixth-place state 200 freestyle relay team also remains intact with Serniute , Gabby and Maddy Sims, and sophomore Emily Albrecht. “Our relays should rock,” Busse said. “They should be very fast,

scary fast. And we’ve had some pretty fast relays. That’s always a big player at the state meet because of the number of points. Having very fast relays is huge.” Busse pointed out that Albrecht and sophomore Daria Wick enjoyed productive off-seasons and will help solidify an already deep roster. “Emily Albrecht has already proven herself in the last calendar year along with Daria Wick,” she said. “They’re both sophomores and they had a very good offSee SIMS, page 15

I think we will get through this and continue to be great friends.” As for the trickledown effect of Kenseth’s decision,RFR promoted 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to the No. 17 car to fill Kenseth’s ride. “Ricky probably loves me right

Duvic’s point-after attempt was blocked. “We definitely played our hardest out there,” said Euritt, who caught eight passes for 119 yards. “There were some mistakes in the red zone, but we’ll definitely come back in the next week and hopefully get a ‘W.’ I know we made a million steps from last year to this year and I’m just hoping we bounce back from this loss.” Despite the loss, the Redwings, who host Rich Central on Friday, have already doubled their victory total from last season thanks to their Week 1 and Week 2 victories over Chicago Washington and South Elgin, respectively. “We’ve been working so hard in the off-season,” Euritt said. “I hope it all just pays off for us at the end of the season.” Ontko finished with three catches for 79 yards, and McTarnaghan caught three passes for 45. Defensively, Nick Surges and Steve Hubona each recorded quarterback sacks.

“We are looking forward to Chicagoland and hopefully get a good start to this,” he said.“We have never won a championship and we are going out there trying to win our first.” Hamlin is followed in the new point standings by Jimmie Johnson, one of HMS drivers, who had won five straight NASCAR titles prior to last season. He is looking to get back to the top of the sport. “I feel good about it,” Johnson said. “The last couple weeks, we haven’t had the best performances, but the 10 tracks in the Chase are really good for this 48 team. I have won a lot of races on eight of those 10 tracks.” Last year’s winner in Joliet and winner of the Sprint Cup, Tony Stewart sits in the third seed. “After last year, we realize next week is the start of the second part of the season for us,”Stewart said. Stewart came in last year seeded toward the bottom, but won four of the 10 Chase races to earn the title over Carl Edwards who failed to make the cut this season. Lost in the excitement of the Chase Saturday night was the race win by Clint Bowyer, who is one of two drivers (Greg Biffle) six points

behind Hamlin entering the Chase. It was Bowyer’s second win of the season. In his sixth year as a Cup driver, this marks the fourth time Boyer has made the Chase. His best finish is third, and he says as long as he is in it, winning sounds pretty good. “It would be pretty big,” Bowyer said. “It would be a helluva lot of fun. Jimmie seems like he has a blast doing it. I promise you, I can throw a better party than him. I might not survive it, but it would be big.” Matt Kenseth, who just last week announced he would join Hamlin and Busch at JGR next season,is nine points back along with fan favorite Dale Earnhardt, Jr. “I think the team is in great shape,” Kenseth said. “I can’t wait to go to Chicago and race there. We know we need some wins to have a chance at this thing, so hopefully we can have a chance there.” There is no driver in the sport that fans would like to see win more than Earnhardt. “I feel like we have a good shot at it,” he said.“We have been consistent all year long. I feel that it will take a couple wins to win a championship. We have run well everywhere and look forward to getting things kicked off.” Kevin Harvick and MartinTruex,Jr. round out the Chase, which kicks off Sunday at Chicagoland at 1 p.m.

Quick start propels Plainfield North to win By Scott Taylor Sports Reporter Online @ buglenewspapers.com Video

After two possessions Plainfield North held a 14-0 lead on Plainfield South and its two scoring drives couldn’t have been any different. The first was a 77-yard touchdown run by Jay Roberts on the first play from scrimmage. “It felt great,” Roberts said. “The offensive line made a huge hole. Everything about that play was perfect.” After forcing a three-and-out, the Tigers then marched the ball downfield. Seventeen plays and two fourth down conversions later,Trent Cavin plowed in from a yard out, capping the 71-play drive. “It’s huge coming out to a fast start,” North quarterback Kurt Palandech said. “Offensively we came out and scored right away and got us momentum. Then the defense gave the ball right back to us.” That helped fuel the Tigers (2-1 overall, 1-0 in Southwest Prairie Conference) to a 35-19 win over the Cougars (1-2, 0-1) Friday at North. “That’s pretty good stuff, for sure,” North coach Tim Kane said. “I thought our kids came out ready to play. It was nice to be able to keep the ball away from them, too.” “They got off to a real good start,” South coach Ken Bublitz said. “That set the tone for the game. We had ourselves in position to make a run, but we had to finish some drives.” South battled back from the early deficit and got a 24-

yard field goal from Matthew Imburgia. North appeared to get a 71-yard touchdown run from Palandech, but the play was called back. That led to a bad snap on the ensuing punt and South had it first and goal from the North 1-yard line. Ricky Luna plowed in from there to make it 14-9. With all the momentum to the Cougars, North responded with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Palendech to Brett Fox to take a 21-9 lead at the half. Palendech broke the game open in the third quarter with a 22-yard touchdown run to make it 28-9. Jonathan Kosirog returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, but it was called back due to penalty and they ended up not scoring. That was the story of the second half for the Cougars, who outgained the Tigers 178117 in the second half after being outgained 249-87 in the first half. “We have to finish,”Bublitz said. “Not finishing is the difference. We battled back and were in great position. I’m very proud of our guys (for battling back).” South added a 31-yard field goal from Imburgia and a 31yard touchdown pass from Luna to Mike Valentine. Jay Roberts had a 35-yard scamper for the Tigers to finish their scoring. Roberts finished with 184 yards on 26 carries, while Palandech added 74 yards on 11 totes. Kosirog carried 13 times for 89 yards for the Cougars and Joshua Harris ran for 59 yards on four attempts. staylor@buglenewspapers.com

When dumb is smart Q. I work with a very smart guy who seems to make everything complicated. We often have to explain projects to customers. How do I get him to dumb it down, so we don’t lose projects, without insulting him? A. If you don’t want to insult your bright colleague, then realize smart people often don’t realize that half the population doesn’t think the way they do. Many very smart people don’t realize two facts about communicating at work: 1) When talking to someone less intellectually capable than you, give lots of information to have them understand what you understood in two sentences. Don’t express irritation about this. 2) Realize no one at work will admit when they don’t understand you. Albert Einstein (reportedly a fairly smart guy) once said,“If you can’t explain it to a 6- year-old, you don’t understand it yourself.” Einstein makes an excellent point that understanding a concept may

not be hard. Explaining that same concept to anyone else can be daunting. Many of my very smart clients have spent long careers being offended that so many people ignored their good ideas. When I pointed out that most of their coworkers had no idea what they were talking about, my clients were shocked. They have never considered other people didn’t understand their ideas. Before your next important client meeting, meet privately with your coworker. Let him know that you admire his quick intellect. Let him know that you’ve noticed the clients don’t seem to be as quick witted as he is. Tell him you want to give clients information an elementary student would track, and then brainstorm together. Realize that your coworker

probably has no clue that your clients feel dumb around him. Once he sees he is talking over the heads of your clients, he’ll be motivated to simplify and expand what he says. Just because your coworker is a bright guy doesn’t mean he is insightful about human beings. We are usually so worried about our own inadequacies that we may not notice the vulnerability of others at work. Most clients would rather lose your help than lose face by admitting they can’t understand what you are saying. NASCAR picks Who will win the Geico 400? Mark: Matt Kenseth With everything finally settled and his contract signed with Joe Gibbs Racing for next year, I think Kenseth is primed to win the first race in the Chase. The winner of the Daytona 500, Kenseth has been dealing all season with where he will race in 2013. While he says it wasn’t a huge distraction, how could it not be? After having to make a decision to leave Roush Fenway after 13 years, then sign with Joe Gibbs and then to top it off have to play dumb when his move to the No. 20 car was the worst kept secret in NASCAR. Now that it’s all done, Kentseth can focus on parting ways with RFR with a Sprint Cup title. To win the race, Kenseth will have to battle with Tony Stewart, last year’s winner of both the Geico 400 and the Sprint Cup. After a crash two weeks ago, Stewart vowed to wreck Kenseth every chance he gets the rest of the year. Scott: Carl Edwards With all the struggles Edwards has had this year, it would only seem fitting for him to come up big when it doesn’t really matter for him. After fighting Tony Stewart to the finish in the chase last year, Edwards was left out of the race this year due to constant struggles. Now there is no pressure on him and while he hasn’t had the best record in Joliet, he is clearly capable of taking the checkered flag. That lack of pressure should give him an all-or-nothing mentality. While the chasers have to be careful not to fall behind early in the chase, Edwards can take chances and go for the win, knowing that a 30th place finish won’t be costly in the points race. Another option here would be Kyle Busch, who has also had a disappointing year and is not in

Will Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (left) or Denny Hamlin be crowned NASCAR champion?

the chase. He has won here before and is always all about winning. Remember, last year I picked Stewart to win, and he did!

Who will win Chase? Mark: Dale Earnhardt, Jr. After years of trying to get back to his winning ways, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has found his way back this season. Junior might not get the win in the Geico 400 Sunday, but he will get the needed wins over the course of the 10 race playoff and

claim the title this season. Junior has dedicated himself more this season to becoming a complete driver and paying more attention to what is going on with the car off the track and working with his team more in the setup of the car each week. That added knowledge added to his raw ability to drive will win NASCAR’s favorite driver a title this year, although it won’t be easy. Earnhardt is joined by all three of his Hendrick Motor Sports

teammates and will benefit from racing his teammates, including five-time winner Jimmie Johnson, to the finish. Scott: Denny Hamlin Hamlin has been very close to winning the title in the past and is more than capable of pulling it off. He comes into the chase with a three-point lead, thanks to winning four races this year, the most by anyone. On top of that, he has won two of the past three races, so he is peaking at the right time. He also

has a good amount of success on tracks that make up the chase. The time is now for him to break through and in a wide-open chase, he has a good of a chance as anyone, especially Earnhardt Jr., who can’t even win a race! The only downfall is that Hamlin can flame out early in the chase with some bad finishes, which he has done in the past, and make me look dumb. However, I think he will deliver the goods this year and bring the title to Joe Gibbs Racing.
