The ‘Connector’ Lauran Neiberg wins prestigious Downers Grove Chamber award

By Robin Ambrosia Staff Reporter

Laura Neiberg is known throughout Downers Grove as the ‘connector’ which is one of the reasons she has been selected as the 2012 Enterprise Award Winner by the Downers Grove Area Chamber of Commerce. “The Enterprise Award celebrates an individual who has significantly impacted the community through personal involvement for the benefit of all; there have only been five awarded,”said Laura Crawford, president and CEO of the Downers Grove Area Chamber of Commerce. As Malcolm Gladwell wrote in his book the Tipping Point, connectors are ‘those people on whom we rely more heavily than we realize. They are people with a special gift for bringing the world together’, according to the Downers Grove Chamber of Commerce. Being vice-president of Ancillary Services and Community Health for Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Neiberg has developed many relationships with the community. “When I got involved with the construction of Good Samaritan’s Health

That was in 1998 and I’ve been involved with the Chamber and other local organizations ever since.” See CONNECTOR, page 3

Fitness trainer charged for sexual assault of teen By Robin Ambrosia Staff Reporter

A Woodridge man and trainer at Lifetime Fitness has been arrested for having inappropriate sexual contact with a minor boy whom he had been training in track and field at Lifetime’s Warrenville location. Woodridge resident Robert Theodore, 60, of 3809 Hagen Court, has been charged with three counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse, Class 2 felonies punishable by up to seven years in prison. It is alleged that Theodore had inappropriate contact on several occasions with the victim when the minor boy was 16 years old.

The abuse allegedly occurred at Theodore’s home, the victim’s home and at the gym where he would train the boy. It is further alleged that Theodore bought expensive gifts for his victim such as a specialized bicycle, clothing and an iTouch. “The allegations against Mr. Theodore are sickening,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. “The relationship between an athlete and their trainer is built on trust and a desire to bring out the best in the athlete. It is alleged that through his actions, Mr. Theodore cared nothing about his young victim and destroyed the trust his victim had placed in him to satisfy his own

despicable desires.” Bond was set Sept. 12 at $250,000 and Theodore posted $25,000 to secure his release. As part of the conditions of his bond, Theodore was ordered to submit to GPS monitoring and have no contact with the victim or anyone under the age of 18. Theodore is scheduled for arraignment Oct. 15, 2012 in front of Judge Blanche Fawell. Anyone with information regarding Theodore is asked to contact Investigator Richard Wistocki at the Naperville Police Department at (630) 3055384, or the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office at (630) 407-8000.

Burglary suspects ComEd to talk power, arrested by police upgrades with residents Downers Grove Police Chief Robert A. Porter announced Wednesday that four suspects have been arrested in connection with recent residential burglaries that occurred throughout the village. On September 7, 2012, officers responded to the 5500 block of Lyman Avenue for two citizen reports of multiple people attempting to gain entry into a residence. The citizens indicated that they had received the community notification on Aug. 31 regarding residential burglaries and contacted police after observing the activity. Police on patrol nearby quickly apprehended the individuals. Michael A. Sauer, 24 years old of Worth, Ill., was charged with one count of felony residential burglary and transported to the DuPage County Jail. Michael H. Peterson, 24 years old of Downers

Grove, Ill., was arrested on a no bond felony arrest warrant, and Kamila Burczyc, age 23 of Worth, Ill., was charged with felony residential burglary in connection to a burglary that occurred in another town. The individuals are linked to several residential burglaries throughout the village and a number of other communities. No further details are available at this time as the investigation is on-going. Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of guilt. The arrested persons are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial.

ComEd officials will be in the Downers Grove hot seat this week, as they meet with residents and village officials to talk about service. Electrical upgrades are the key topic of a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 located at the Park District Recreation Center, 4500 Belmont Rd. This meeting is a follow up to an initial sit-down in 2011, after two major storms resulting in power outages throughout the community. Concerns from residents prompted the village to examine the overall reliability of the electrical distribution system owned and operated by ComEd. According to Downers Grove Village Mayor Martin

Connecting these students with highly skilled physicians, nurses, therapists, and technicians makes me feel like I’m able to contribute to the future of health care.” There have been some challenges mixed in for Neiberg. “I was the first Chairwoman of the Board of the Medical Fitness Association, which is a national, member-driven organization that defines benchmarks for professionally administered health and wellness services in order to improve outcomes for individuals with chronic diseases

Tully, that initial meeting led to much improvement over the past 12 months. “We have been working with ComEd to enhance and improve the electrical service in Downers Grove,” Tully said. “This was brought about by the unusual weather events of last year which caused extraordinary and protracted outages in the community.” In the 2011 reliability report, the village concluded that equipment failure was the most common cause of power outages, while weather and treerelated issues caused the most outages of extended duration. As a result of the 2011 meeting and reliability report, the village was able to secure a plan from ComEd, including equipment upgrades (both

We needed to borrow money from the bank, which put all board members at risk until we were able to pay off the loan.” According to Crawford, Neiberg is a familiar face in Downers Grove. “You’ve probably seen her working with the Downers Grove Police Department doing Child Car Seat Safety Checks or on the task force of the SALT Committee (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together), or even leading the way to ensure that the local food

Phone, e-mail used for emergency alerts By Robin Ambrosia Staff Reporter

Knowledge of an emergency is the first step to being prepared. And as September marks the ninth annual National Preparedness Month, municipalities are doing what they can to keep residents informed and up-to-date. One popular way to contact residents and businesses in the event of an emergency is through automatic notification systems that reach people via phone and e-mail. Downers Grove contracted with Connect-CTY to reach residences and businesses with a pre-recorded message within 5 to 10 minutes of activation. The primary form of notification will be by phone and can be edited at any time. Residents and businesses are encouraged to register up to three additional phone numbers and two e-mail addresses for notification. The Downers Grove Community Response Center

“Whenever we post an alert on the website, whether it’s a local emergency such as severe weather, hazardous waste, or an Amber Alert or national emergency, the message automatically goes out through the method of contact requested by resident”, said Larry McIntyre, Westmont media relations coordinator. On the Village of Westmont website, a link called ‘Notify Me’ allows residents to sign up for emergency alerts. There’s also an option to receive non-emergency informational alerts including

announcements from police, fire, Community School District 201, public works, village boards and commissions, park district and Westmont special events. “Our website was just redone in June, so we’re still growing and learning, but we are asking residents to go online and sign up,” McIntyre said. The Village of Woodridge currently maintains an electronic newsletter with approximately 3,000 subscribers as well as placing alerts on their cable news channel,WCTV Channel 6.

“The village has also made use of reverse 911 – where a call would go out to residents informing them on any community event that may warrant this emergency communication,” Woodridge management analyst Jack Knight said. “We have also heavily advertised the availability of Smart 911 as a way for individuals to provide relevant information to any health or fire emergencies they may have. It also assists with locating someone if they call by cell phone.” But, soon Woodridge will be able to offer more personalized notification, similar to Westmont. “At the beginning of the year we will be moving over to another website that will allow people to sign up for any notifications that they would like to receive from the village,” Knight said. “They can supply an email or cell phone number to get a text message with this information.” For more information on steps to take to be prepared for emergencies, visit http://www. cdc.gov/Features/BeReady/

Some days you rock but can’t roll. During the first half of the upcoming week, you might find it difficult to get up to speed when dealing with business or financial situations. Wait to begin new projects.

Persistence pays off in the end. There is no easy path to success, so keep your nose to the grindstone. It will be worth the effort, as everything you’ve worked toward will begin paying dividends this week.

You can’t have your cake and eat it, too. Focusing too much attention on career goals could cause family relationships to suffer - and vice versa. Find a happy medium during the week to come.

Everybody has something to contribute. There is still usefulness and value even in shy and reticent people, so don’t discard their ideas or fail to solicit their assistance in the week ahead. You may have misjudged someone.

Hit the switch and get your name in lights. In the week to come, you might be tempted to curry favor and grab attention by participating wholeheartedly within groups of people gathered for business purposes.

Don’t mix business and pleasure in the week ahead. Your ambitions could take precedence. but distract you from what is really important. Give your loved ones and family members extra attention.

A little change never hurt anyone. There’s nothing wrong with your circle of friends, but occasionally you can gain a whole new perspective through new people. Break with routines during the week ahead.

Accentuate the positive. You might benefit by sharing inspirational affirmations and your wisdom with others. Business and financial decisions are best left on the back burner during the first half of the week.

There is light at the end of the financial tunnel. Take a look at the checkbook or bills and tally up the columns. Your past planning and good judgment begin to pay off in the week ahead.

Enjoy a spell in the spotlight. A situation might give you a chance to be the center of attention this week. Maintain a steady pace when you have many tasks to perform. Take opposition in stride.

Money hidden under the mattress can grow lumpy. Be wise about spending and budgets. In the upcoming week, you will find reasons to be glad that you were highly organized and paid attention to details.

Overcome objections by opening the doors to frank discussion. Don’t hide the truth or facts in the week ahead. Emphasize mutual benefits rather than pointing out weaknesses when dealing with others.

Short-handed Mustangs fall to Leyden By Matt Le Cren Contributing Writer

The few ruined it for the many on the Downers Grove South football team last week. With three starters sitting out the first half for disciplinary reasons, the Mustangs fell behind visiting Leyden 14-0 Friday night and, despite a stirring secondhalf comeback, suffered a 27-21 West Suburban Conference Gold Division loss in Downers Grove. It was the first time the Mustangs have lost to Leyden since 2004 and only the second time in the past 20 years. “This game is hard enough with the things that you can’t control, but the things that you can control and you don’t, makes it even more difficult,” Downers South coach John Belskis said.“That’s been the story line for these four weeks of our season. “We had three kids who couldn’t get out of bed for a 9 o’clock weight [session] on Wednesday morning, a late arrival [day], that sat out the first half. Those are our rules and we’re not changing our standards for anyone,so if it wasn’t important enough to them, then this is what you get. It’s unfortunate for the kids that do care, because what the other kids do affects them.” The Mustangs (1-3, 1-1) could get nothing going offensively until late, managing only 39 yards of offense in the first half and 92 through three quarters. Leyden (31, 2-0), which gashed the Downers South defense for 415 yards, led 14-0 at the break thanks to two touchdown runs from Mickey Gulo. The deficit would have been worse if not for Javon Turner, who blocked two field goal tries and later rejected an extra-point try. Then Kaylon Miller gave the crowd a shot of adrenaline by returning a punt 90 yards for a touchdown to get the Mustangs on

the board with 3:49 left in the third quarter.Miller actually dropped the punt before recovering and racing up the right side line. “I looked up and then I took a quick peek down and that’s why I lost control of the ball,” Miller said. “Then when I got back up I just saw open field and I broke a tackle and it was just an open lane to the right. “Basically it got everyone fired up. That part happened [because] of God and my dad [who died last year]; they looked down and they got me through.” Miller did his best to get the Mustangs through. After the Eagles responded by marching 74 yards in five plays to increase the lead to 21-7 on a 32-yard run by Aaron Whigham with 2:05 to go in the third, Miller caught touchdown passes of 17 and 19 yards from quarterback Mike Zebold in the fourth quarter. The second score was followed by a two-point conversion run by Alec Arvanitakis that tied the game 21-21 at the 6:43 mark. “Whenever you have a guy like Kaylon on your team it’s pretty easy to throw to him and he’ll make a play for you,” Zebold said. “I feel like I can throw him the ball within three yards and he’ll catch it.” Zebold struggled for most of the contest, completing 10 of 21 passes for 113 yards, but he was sacked three times and hit several other times, enduring a crushing blow one play before finding Miller on 4th-and-goal from the 19 for the tying touchdown. “Of course any loss is going to hurt, especially when we’re coming back like that,” Zebold said. “We had some good drives there, but unfortunately at the start of the first half I wasn’t playing very well. I wasn’t making throws that were my best and our defense was holding them and I couldn’t complete throws or maybe we

could have scored more times. “My line was doing a great job. Regardless of me taking pops, [Leyden] is sending too many guys

for us to block. But I felt we came back hard in the second half and unfortunately we couldn’t bring it up in the first half when the defense was doing pretty well.” Alas, the defense couldn’t stop the Eagles when it mattered most, as Leyden took the lead for good on a three-yard run by quarterback Mike Smith with 3:46 remaining. Turner blocked the extra-point and the Mustangs moved the ball to the Leyden 47, only to lose a fumble and watch the visitors run out the clock. Miller gave credit to Leyden for a solid performance. “Their defense was

fundamentally sound,” Miller said. “They shot through their gaps and they did everything they were supposed to do. I just feel that we didn’t execute as much as we should have tonight and we got the ‘L.’” It won’t get any easier for the Mustangs this week as they travel to cross-town rival Downers Grove North (3-1), which is off to its best start since 2005. “We’ve not had [these disciplinary problems] before and I don’t know why it’s happening,” Belskis said. “We’ll go out next week and try to win a football game.”

Indians go back to roots, beat Wildcats By Mark Gregory Sports Reporter

In a game that was almost a must win for Minooka after starting the season 0-3, the Indians dug deep into the playbook. Well, deep enough to get back to what Minooka has always done – run the football and play good defense. “The first three weeks was the head coach getting in the way,” said first-year Minooka coach Paul Forsyth. “We tried to do some things that traditionally we don’t do. So basically what you saw is us getting back to what we do here. We got out of the I (formation) and went back to the three-man backfield.” That running game gave Central the 45-14 win. Two of those backs, Nate Gunn (11 carries, 122 yards, 2 TDs) and Max Brozovich (7, 129, TD) went over the 100-yard mark, while the third starter, Cory Bee (12, 81) scored twice. It was the first game back in the backfield for Brozovich, who was converted to a wide receiver. “I love running back,”he said.“My sophomore year they moved me to wide receiver and I did pretty good there, but I loved getting back and running the ball. It is back to old school Minooka football. Back to doing what we do.” The Indians got off the bat right away when they turned the first of three interceptions by Corbet Oughton into Bee’s first TD. It was the first lead for Minooka all season. A Central fumble on the next possession led to a Jacob Stytz 37yard field goal and a 10-0 Indian lead. A Brozovich TD on a fake punt

closed the first quarter for the Indians with a 17-0 lead. The second quarter opened with a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Shane Briscoe, who was starting for the injured Joe Carnagio, to Luke Stovall from 44-yards out. The Indians took a 31-0 lead at halftime. After Oughton took his second interception back 36 yards for a score and a 38-0 lead, it looked as if the Indians may get a running clock. However, a 75-yard punt return for a score by Central’s Dane Moscatelli got Central on the board. The Wildcats trimmed the led to 38-14 when Brian Blair found Joe Tatum from nine-yards out for a score. Central would threaten again, but Oughton’s third pick, one that could have been returned for a score if he didn’t stumble and fall, squashed the drive. Brozovich ended all scoring with a 58-yard TD run midway through the final stanza. “We were flat,” Plainfield Central coach John Jackson said of the start of the game. “Minooka was ready for us.They respected us and they came out hard and took it to us in the first half. We can’t spot them 17 points and we can’t turn over the bloody ball.” Jackson was happy with how the Wildcats responded after halftime. “It took us until the second half to wake up and start playing how we can, but then the mistakes happened again,” he said.“We had them scared there for a little bit in the third quarter. We will be ready to play this week. That is on me and I guarantee we will be ready.” mark@buglenewspapers.com

Get your affairs in order Dear Dave, One of my relatives just discovered she has cancer. She’s a single mom with two young kids, and I’m not sure if she’s prepared to face something like this. What are the best steps she can take financially at this point? Shannon Dear Shannon, I’m really sorry to hear about this. I know cancer is a scary thing to hear, but please remember to pray and be there for her all you can. God willing, things can still turn out okay. When people ask if a person has their affairs in order, they’re usually asking a couple of different questions. Are you right with God? Do you have life insurance and a will? Another important thing is to

have all the paperwork of your life organized and in a safe place, so someone you trust can handle the details if things don’t turn out well. Everyone should have a good term life insurance policy in place. My advice is to have a policy worth 10 times your annual income. When it comes to a will, make sure it’s state specific. Probate and estate regulations are not federal laws, they’re state laws. So any will should be drawn up according to guidelines for the state in which you live. Make sure, too, that she has made arrangements for any

minor children. It might be a good idea to sit down and talk with two or three trusted family members or close friends and decide who will take them if the worst should happen.Whoever this is should be incredibly responsible and caring, and willing to love and raise these kids as if they were their very own. Good luck, Shannon. And God bless you and your family. —Dave * Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business.

Modernize your home’s interior Once-upon-a-time you loved the look of your living space, but now it feels so last-century. If this sounds like you, consider injecting new energy into your home by making a few high-impact changes without a high-roller budget. Clever use of colors in combination with smart lighting can enliven rooms so they give off a more compelling, modern vibe without the need for costly remodeling projects or expensive furniture.

Color Transformations Color both soothes and stirs the senses. Accent walls are a great way to introduce bold color and contrast, infusing a room with a sense of adventure, playfulness or drama. Bring vitality to any room by painting one wall a vivid shade to frame a focal point such as a

dramatic piece of artwork. Accent walls are usually solid with no doors or windows, unless there is something special about these features you want to highlight, such as a spectacular view or interesting architecture. If you find yourself intimidated by vibrant colors, use neutral tones on your primary walls with a darker, more intense shade on your accent wall. Popular paint colors this year include fiery, orange-infused reds, watery blues, lush greens and earthy neutrals.

sconces placed on each side of the mirror for evenly lighting the face. “Wall sconces add visual interest to the bath and even make daily tasks like shaving and make-up application easier,” Dross says. For bedrooms, living rooms and family rooms choose strong bold shapes for your table and floor lamps.

Modernize your lighting to give your rooms an easy makeover.

Lighting at its Best Lighting is one of the most dramatic areas where things are changing in home decor. Not only are new bulbs such as CFLs and LEDs offering greater energy efficiency, light fixture styles and lamp styles are also changing.

Remember those recessed lights so popular years ago? Depending on how they are used today, they may make a home look outdated. Kichler Lighting’s Director ofTrends and Training, Jeff Dross, suggests replacing this older style with contemporary semi-flush fixtures. He also recommends swapping

outdated chandeliers, especially of the old brass variety, with a series of modern pendant lights. “Nothing makes a tasteful statement of modern simplicity better than a row of pendant lights over a kitchen island or above a dining room table,” Dross says. For the bathroom, use wall

Match decorative accessories like pillows and lamps to your accent wall color, incorporating the color -- or shades of it -- into a variety of textures. Framed photos, an interesting vase or impressive plant will stand out well against an accent wall, making the perfect focal point.A buffet lamp (a smaller version of a table lamp) adds ambience and makes an ideal accent.

Improve your entryway with these simple steps Nothing says “welcome to my home” quite like an impressive entryway. Attention to detail and some added extra touches of hospitality can transform any hohum entry into a warm and inviting approach to a home. Start with the basics. Evaluate the look and condition of your front door. Determine if your current door needs to be replaced or just enhanced with a decorative

urethane pediment, crosshead and pilasters. If you’re replacing your door, consider one made of secure fiberglass that resists denting and scratching, is easy to maintain, energy efficient and quiet, such as one from the Therma-Tru ClassicCraft Canvas Collection, which is a “Consumers Digest Best Buy” recipient. The smooth, paintable finish on this door allows you to

select any accent paint color for your home. Quality products are important,so don’t forget to add a touch of appeal to your home’s entryway. Start with decorative glass for the doorlites and potentially your sidelites. You can select from privacy glass or designer elegant features and colors in attractive glass packages to create a warm, welcoming entryway. To enhance your door and

protect it from rot, mold, insects and decay, select moisture-resistant trim products. Those from Fypon, for example, are made of urethane and are lightweight and easy to install. Find a retailer that carries lowmaintenance synthetic products in dozens of designs, so you can showcase your own personality. Urethane millwork products are long-lasting, since their surfaces are

not subject to chipping and peeling as you’ll find with many wood trim pieces. The pieces also resist humidity and warping, making them ideal for all climate conditions. For the final steps, consider new exterior lighting fixtures to complement your new door, along with a colorful welcome mat and planters of bright flowers.Together, these all add up to create an inviting entryway for you and your guests.
