U.S. Renal Care opens dialysis facility New Downers Grove location will help treat kidney disease in western suburbs. By Robin Ambrosia Staff Reporter

Downers Grove recently celebrated the grand opening of U.S. Renal Care’s new 13-station dialysis facility, which will serve patients in the western suburbs. “A renal care center is a facility that allows outpatient treatment of kidney failure,” said Dr. Anis Rauf, medical director of the Downers Grove renal facility. “When the kidney’s fail, the body is not able to get rid of toxic waste products. So you need to be hooked up to a machine that cleans your blood and gets the fluid out.” Renal dialysis is the process of filtering the blood when the kidneys are unable by using a machine. It can be used to allow kidneys to heal from short-term problems, for long-term kidney support or while waiting for a kidney transplant. “The top two causes of kidney

Westmont pharmacy collects unused drugs By Robin Ambrosia Staff reporter

Since flushing unused drug is considered unsafe, people are seeking new ways of disposing of unused and unsafe medication. “Drugs that were flushed down the toilet are finding its way back into our fresh water supply,” Ron Farland, Westmont Pharmacy owner, said. “This program is a small investment to do something good for our community and the environment.” Westmont Pharmacy, 2 North Cass Ave., is participating in the Yellow Jug Old Drugs Program, which offers a safer method of getting rid of unused medicine. “Just bring in your old bottles with pills, caplets, tablets, creams or liquid to our store and we will dispose of it for you,” Farland said. Great Lakes CleanWater,a nonprofit organization in May 2009 in Michigan, started the Yellow Jug Old Drugs program. The program works in partnership

with local pharmacies to collect and properly dispose of unwanted drugs in a safe and approved method to keep our water clean. Currently, there are 249 pharmacies participating in Michigan,Illinois and Wisconsin. Between May and September 2012, Michigan pharmacies have collected 7023 pounds of pounds of unused drugs, according to the Great Lakes Clean Water. The Yellow Jug Old Drugs program accepts only noncontrolled drugs. Participating pharmacies have a complete list of accepted and non-accepted items. “Some of the drugs we don’t accept are valium, ativan, vicodin and ritalin,” Farland said. To help in the efforts to prevent abuse of prescription drugs, the program works in cooperation with many law enforcement agencies that collect controlled substances. “We take all drugs, regardless of where they were purchased,”

Farland said. “We fill up a jug every four to five weeks.” According to the FDA,flushing of the most dangerous drugs is advised only when they cannot be disposed of through a takeback program because it is too risky to throw these drugs into unsecured trash cans. Keeping medicines after they are no longer needed creates an unnecessary health risk in the home, especially if there are children present. Even child resistant containers cannot completely prevent a child from taking medicines that belong to someone else. In a study that looked at cases of accidental child exposure to a grandparent’s medicine, 45% of cases involved medicines stored in child-resistant containers, according to the FDA. The FDA has a list of drugs that can be disposed through a take back program at www.fda. gov/Drugs/ResourcesForYou. For more information, call Westmont Pharmacy at 630969-2044.

RENAL Continued from page 1 out about the need for organ donation. Connie has continued his advocacy. “Right now, I am going through personal medical issues with my father who is a diabetic and who just had an amputation a couple weeks ago,” Connie said.“He is pretty close to being on dialysis. This truly brings it all home to me and I wish my father was here to be in a wonderful facility like this.” The treatment center is expected to see 48 to 50 patients a day, and offer three different shifts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and another on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The facility is located at 1201 Butterfield Road. In addition to the Downers Grove location, a facility will be opened next month in Bolingbrook. For more information, call the facility at 630-968-0306.

Special events committee seeks community input By Robin Ambrosia Staff Reporter

The Westmont Special Events Corporation is already in full swing planning events for 2013. The notfor-profit corporation is asking the business community and residents for feedback to improve these events. “As we’ve done in the past, we have created a variety of surveys to obtain feedback regarding events such as Taste of Westmont, Cruisin’ Nights, Westmont Fresh Marketplace, and the new Road Rally,” WSEC Vice President of Communication Emily Bandza said. The downtown business community has been invited to a special events meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Westmont Centre, 1 S. Cass Ave.The goal of the meeting is to discuss how the WSEC and the business community can best work together to create successful community events.

As both a resident and Westmont business owner of Uncle Jon’s Music, Jon Kostal recognizes the benefits of being a sponsor of the Taste of Westmont’s youth stage as well as his involvement with Best of the ‘Burbs Battle of the Bands contest. “We enjoy attending the special events and it’s an excellent opportunity to showcase the business by offering our services, whether it be running sound equipment, performing live music, or providing gear,” Kostal said. “These events offer a chance to promote our businesses and community to visitors from all over,” Westmont Media Relations and Community Events Liaison Larry McIntyre said. “We estimate that half of our attendance comes from people out of town.” Mark Link, owner of Uncle Bub’s BBQ and Catering, which has been the event sponsor for the backstage VIP tent, sees these events as an opportunity for

Westmont to recruit business. “Since Westmont is having a tough time bringing in new businesses to the downtown area, we need to support these events,” Link said. “With the ongoing construction on Cass Ave, as business owners we need these events so we can to encourage more individuals to visit our downtown.” Then, a community event planning meeting and open house will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 at Westmont Centre, 1 S. Cass Ave. This will be an opportunity for both the residents and downtown businesses to offer ideas in planning the upcoming 2013 community events. “Everything from layout to entertainment, we have listened to the ideas of the community and responded,” Bandza said. “The Fresh Marketplace farmer’s market event came directly from a suggestion made at last year’s public planning meeting.”

including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel,” said Alex Buda, Thomas Jefferson Junior High musical director. The show will be performed at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 and 3 p.m. Nov. 3 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School,

School can be emotionally and sometimes physically painful for students. Based on the writings and life of 17 year-old Rachel Scott, the first student killed at Columbine High School in 1999, Rachel’s Challenge is a program dedicated to help equip students and adults to combat bullying and feelings of isolation and despair. According to the Rachel’s Challenge website, each day 160,000 students do not go to school because they are bullied, teased or harassed. The program is aimed at empowering students to overcome feelings of isolation and pain by creating a culture of kindness and compassion. Both Herrick and O’Neill middle schools are starting Friends of Rachel Clubs. A series of kick-off events

will be on Oct. 24, which will include a joint training of 50 students from each school who will comprise the FOR core leadership group and assemblies at both schools. Later in the evening, a community workshop will be held at 7 p.m. at O’Neill Middle School, 635 59th St., Downers Grove, describing the Rachel’s Challenge program and how it will be implemented at Herrick and O’Neill. “It’s all about making a more positive school environment,” O’Neill Junior High assistant principal Christine Clavenna said. “The key is to talk about what students can do to support each other, rather than focusing on what they shouldn’t do.” Clavenna was active in bringing the program since her former school had implemented the Rachel’s Challenge program.

Accentuate the positive. Be willing to try on new tasks for size. You could be called upon to test your skills in a completely different venue in the upcoming week. Stretch your muscles literally or figuratively.

Be a perfect citizen. Cross your t’s and dot your i’s and give no one a reason to find fault with your performance. Hold off on making crucial decisions and commitments until the end of the week.

Ferret out the information you need to make things run more smoothly. Don’t be afraid to ask for a helping hand from a partner. Your friends will be looking for lighthearted fun by the end of the week.

Wait and see. Losses can accumulate if you spin the roulette wheel with investments or career in the middle of the week. Bide your time, as good things will come to those who practice patience.

Make dreams come true. The next few days offer a perfect atmosphere to put the finishing touches on your artistic or creative endeavors. The second half of the week may require a sleeves-rolled-up technique.

Step lively. There will be so much going on that you will need to dance a jig, or at least get a to-do list in hand, to keep up. The middle of the week could be a very poor time to make purchases or investments.

You can’t hear it, see it or poke it with a stick, but you have what it takes to make the grade. Make the best use of your ability to blend in as one of the gang at the end of the week and form new contacts.

Heed the call of the whimsical. A great deal of fun can be stirred up by using a small bit of imagination early in the week. Significant relationships might need some tender loving care; let intuition guide you.

Make a splash as the most entertaining party person during weekend activities. Don’t start anything of importance in the middle of the week, as conditions could change in the blink of an eye.

Be a good sport. Under all the teasing and horseplay, there may be some true kindness and understanding. Your intuitions are a bit stronger early in the week, so ignore words and listen to your heart.

If tasteful purchases for the home are on the agenda, you may find small items of enduring value in the beginning or end of the week. The stars are not helpful enough for major investments or contracts.

Stick to the status quo. The cosmic traffic light is red where new ventures are concerned. You may have very good ideas, but wait until the end of the week to put anything of importance into action.

Benet holds off DGS for regional crown By Scott Taylor Sports Editor

In a heated, physical battle for the Downers South Regional title, it was Benet who emerged victorious, 1-0, over the host Mustangs. That goal came with just 2:51 remaining in the first half on a goal from Sam Knapke. “It feels great going into halftime,” Knapke said. “It feels great to be one of the teams who can say we (won regionals).” After owning the play for much of the first half, it was important for the Redwings to score before the half. “It was huge,” Benet coach Sean Wesley said of the goal. “You always want to score and finish the half strong. I thought it was deserved, with all respect to Downers Grove South. I thought we had the better of it in the first half, I think we had eight shots and they had none. They came out fired up in the second half.” “Benet really came out strong in the first half and they were the more aggressive team,” South coach Jon Stapleton said. “I thought we settled in. It hurts to give up a goal in the last five minutes of a half.” The Mustangs fought back in the second half, especially in the final 20 minutes as they had three strong chances come up empty. “We have a great defense,” Knapke said.“It’s great that you only need one goal to win. Our defense is phenomenal. I think we were a little too pumped up (in the second half) and we didn’t keep the ball as much.” “I think they just pressed us and we weren’t going to risk anything by sending guys forward,” Wesley stated. “We were going to sit in and try to

control the ball.” “They are a really good team, they don’t give up much defensively,” Stapleton said. “It was going to be a tall order to find the back of the net. I was proud of our kids. I thought the adjustments we made were good, but Benet was the better team today. 23 (James Colletti) stood out in the back (for Benet). They don’t give up many goals all season. Our kids fought to get some chances. They weren’t real dangerous chances, but if they went in, they were game-changers.” The final 15 minutes saw both Wesley and Downers South senior defender Nick Rossi ejected from the game with Red Cards. “It is the players job to play and it is our job as coaches to protect them,” Wesley said. “I think they did a good job of just playing. Obviously it got more intense farther along in the game.” No. 3 seed Benet faced No. 10 Fenwick Tuesday at the Argo Sectional semifinal, for the right to play in Friday’s sectional final at 6 p.m. against either No. 5 Hinsdale Central or No. 8 Oak Park-River Forest. “I feel great about our chances,” Knapke said. “When we come out and play the best we can, we feel we can beat anyone in the state. We’re definitely confident moving forward.” •Lisle defeated Illini Christian 6-2 in the Lisle Sectional semifinal, but fell to Cristo Rey Jesuit 1-0 in the sectional final.

Benet qualifiers go deep at state By Mike Sandrolini Sports Reporter

Benet’s senior doubles tandem of Mary Beth King and Daniella Reyes, along with No. 1 singles player, Leah Tzakis, combined to win seven matches at last weekend’s girls state tennis tournament. King, Reyes and Tzakis played on Saturday after advancing deep into the consolation round. That day, King and Reyes faced Crystal Lake Central’s Jillian Wallace and Evelyn Youel in a sixth- round consolation match, where they were eliminated 9-8 (1). That match was scored in an eight-game pro set format, as were all matches later in the back draw. Tzakis, meanwhile, advanced to the fifth consolation round, where she lost to HomewoodFlossmoor’s Faith Huckabee 8-4. The senior Benet duo, which qualified for its third straight state tourney after placing third at the Naperville North sectional, began the tournament Oct. 18 winning its first three matches by respective scores of 6-2, 6-0; 6-1, 6-1; and 6-1, 7-6 (3) . King and Reyes’ thirdround match victory against Taya Zoubareva and Victoria Falk of eventual team champion Lake Forest—played in cold and windy conditions—was, in King’s estimation,“Our greatest moment.” See STATE, page 13

Sports STATE Continued from page 12 “Our first two matches weren’t that challenging,” King said.“We knew we had to come out playing our ‘A’ game and we really clicked that match. I think that (winning the match) was the peak of our Benet career. It was probably one of the biggest career wins for us. We were competitive, aggressive and fired up.” Rain greeted competitors on Friday morning. King said she and Reyes got to the courts at 7 a.m. to warm up, but ended up having to wait until early afternoon before it was determined that their fourthround match versus Michelle Demeo and Bethany Lynch of St. Ignatius had to be moved indoors. play the match, which didn’t start until 2:15. The pair ended up losing a three-set match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. “It was kind of a hurry up and wait situation,” King said. “It was a long day, but we were able to get inside and maintain the backdraw.” King said the end of her and Reyes’ brilliant prep career began to sink in after their sixth-round consolation match had concluded. “It did kind of set in at the end of the match,” she said. “We were pretty upset. We had a great four years together, had a good run and it’s been a lot of fun. We’ve made a lot of good memories that will last a lifetime.” Tzakis, a junior, was a firstround winner 6-0, 6-0, and played Geneva’s Kirby Einck in the second round. Tzakis is familiar with Einck since the two hit with each other during the off-season. Einck, however,

FOOTBALL Lisle defeated Sandwich 2014 Friday to finish the season with a winning record at 5-4. However, it did not get enough playoff points. Nick Saul connected on a pair of touchdown passes to Cliff Krause (17) and Griffin Huba (78). Krause added a 20yard touchdown run. After Huba gave the Lions the lead with his touchdown catch, he preserved the victory with a sack on fourth down. •Downers North (5-4) fell to Glenbard West (9-0) 26-0 Saturday, as the Trojans were held to 91 total yards. North will head to Batavia (90) to open the playoffs. •Downers South (4-5) finished its season with a 35-20 win over Addison Trail. staylor@buglenewspapers.com

defeated her 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. “Going into it I knew it was going to be a tough match,” Tzakis said. “I knew she’s a great player. I tried my best but she played great and she just outplayed me in the third set.” Tzakis then went on a tear in the consolation round, winning three consecutive matches by scores of 6-1, 6-0; 6-2, 6-1; and 6-1, 6-1 to put her in the fifth consolation round on Saturday morning. “I just wanted to try and get as far as I could without losing again,” Tzakis said. “It was just a little extra motivation to keep going and be there (on Saturday). I think I had pretty solid ground strokes and my serve was consistent.” Between now and her senior season, Tzakis said she plans to work on her serve more, as well as work on her play at the net. Specifically, “Coming to the net and finishing points off with some volleys and being

The Mustang tandem was eliminated in the fourth round consolation round with a 6-3, 7-6 (10) loss to Lily Schroeder and Alex Wolkoff of New Trier. Chen. She then rallied back for a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mariah Thompson of Morton, but was eliminated in a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 loss to Marquette. The Mustangs’ other doubles team, Dhara Puvar and Joanna Domanski, dropped their first two matches of the state meet, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to Vicky Kulbokas and Jillian Atkenson of Stagg and 7-5, 6-1 to Kate Ryan and Carla O’Byrne of St. Ignatius. “To a girl, they all thought they played their best tennis of the season and you cant ask for more than that,” Downers Grove South coach Peter Freischlag said. On the season, the Mustangs had a successful campaign, enjoying the state wins as well as setting the school record with 18 wins. “The bar is really high as far as expectations are concerned,” Freischlag said. “We just have to take what we have and work hard and try and keep getting better.” mark@buglenewspapers.com

Benet wins share of ESCC title By Mark Gregory Sports Reporter

A year ago, Benet Academy was 1-8 and at the bottom of the East Suburban Catholic Conference. This season, the Redwings went to Joliet Catholic Academy coming off a win over Marist and having a chance to win a share of the ESCC title with a win over the Hilltoppers. The Redwings did just that with the 31-21 win, which clinched them a share of the ESCC crown with Marist. “We are very excited about this. Joliet Catholic is an amazing team, they are a big, strong, disciplined team,” said Benet quarterback Jack Beneventi . “They are huge and a hardhitting team.” It appeared early as if the injury-plagued hosts were going to ruin Benet’s chance at the improbable rise to the league title, as Michael Ivlow had scoring runs of 5-and-20 yards in the opening quarter to put the Hillmen ahead 14-0 right out of the gate. Then Benet got all jacked up. Beneventi put on a passing clinic, hitting Jack Euritt for a pair of scores to knot the game at 14-14. A Tyler Reitz three-yard run just before halftime gave JCA the 21-14 lead at the break, but the second half was all Beneventi. The 6-foot, 6-inch signal caller found Euritt for the third time late in the third quarter for a 40yard TD to again tie the game 21-21. “They took away our underneath quick game, so we had to look a little further down

the field and Jack and Jack did a hell of a job,” said Benet coach Pat New. “Beneventi really does a nice job out there, he plays like a senior. He has great poise in the pocket and he is really accurate.” JCA threatened in the fourth quarter, but a Reitz fumble inside the five yard line, which the Redwings recovered in the and turned into a drive that concluded with Beneventi’s fourth TD pass of the game, this one to Jack Crain, to put Benet ahead 28-21. The Redwings would seal the game in the closing minute with a 25-yard field goal. For the game Beneventi was 28-of-35 for 390 yards and the four TDs. He was intercepted twice, both by Zack Jackovich. Euritt caught five of Beneventi’s passes for 155 yards, while Jack Toner caught three for 71 yards. For the Hillmen, with USCbound running back Ty Isaac still out nursing injuries, JCA was led by Reitz (19 carries, 103 yards, TD) and Michael Ivlow (13 carries, 86 yards, 2 TDs). Joliet Catholic expects Isaac to be back for the playoffs, making them a completely team, coach Dan Sharp said. “We are heading in (to the playoffs) 5-4 which is not how we wanted to go in,” Sharp said. “But, I really think this is the time of year we look forward to. Once you are in, it doesn’t matter what your record is, everybody has a shot. The regular season is done and this is the new season and this is what matters now.We are going to try as hard as we can we can to win each game.” mark@buglenewspapers.com

Business & Real Estate

Don’t fall for fantasy in the workplace Q. My team and my manager work with a charismatic supervisor who is always telling lies about what he’s going to do for our company. My team and manager hang on every word he says, make excuses for why he doesn’t deliver, and then look forward to his next promise. I’m sick of my team getting hung out to dry. How do I get my team and manager to wake up? A. You can get your manager and team to wake up and smell the deception by diplomatically pointing out what it costing them to keep putting their faith in your local snake oil salesman. Your charismatic supervisor clearly is appealing to the hopes and dreams of your team so effectively that they are reluctant to let go of the fantasy he is selling.

There are people in the workplace who have little or no empathy but are superb at reading what people want. People like this sometimes live a life of crime and become con artists, and sometimes they get jobs in organizations like yours. Most people want certain outcomes so badly that they are easy targets for a person who is willing to lie. Once coworkers figure out what this person is doing, he or she simply quits, moves, or disappears and works the same game on a new organization. The only way to be immunized against an office con artist is to be

painfully aware of the difference between reality and fantasy. Some people figure if something sounds too good to be true, they are being conned. Those people rarely get fooled. Then again, reality is a much harder road to walk than a cushy fantasy. To break your colleagues out of their dream world, stop directly attacking the behavior of your local con artist. Instead, next time he makes a ridiculous promise, ask your team about the fallout if he fails to deliver. Focus on the specific consequences for each of them. Don’t try to pry their clutching fingers away from their hope that this supervisor is their hero. Confirm that, indeed, this guy may bring heaven to earth, but ... how will it affect a promotion, an opportunity or the reputation of

your team if his promise doesn’t materialize. If you look at the marketing of products, you’ll notice that most companies surely employ psychologists or someone with psychological expertise to consult on sales campaigns. Marketing and sales efforts often focus on getting customers to buy a promise rather than a product. Car commercials promise that you’ll be sophisticated, environmentally responsible or frugal. The truth is, obviously, buying a car makes you none of these things, but that is certainly not what the commercials imply. When we are accustomed to buying promises rather than products,it can be difficult to avoid falling for a clever sales pitch. If you can patiently keep pointing out the possible downside of

depending on promises that never arrive, your coworkers’ anxiety will make them more interested in reality. Time and experience will be your best ally to help your manager and teammates quit buying the latest fantasy spun by your workplace charmer. The best way of taking care of your old credit reports Dear Dave, I have some bad marks on my credit report. What’s the best way to handle them? Patricia Dear Patricia, There can be three types of nasty items on your credit report. There are errors, which shouldn’t

be there at all. There are old payments that you paid late, and really, these are just a report of history. Then there are debts that have gone bad.

This means you didn’t pay them. If these are the types of items you’re talking about, you’ll have to go back and clean them up. This will mean either making payment in full or settling them at a lower, agreed-upon amount. Probably the biggest headache will be finding exactly who to pay. There’s a good chance some

of them have been handed over to collection agencies. If this is the case, they’ll try to charge collection fees, and in some cases even double the amount owed. You’ll have to negotiate with them for a more reasonable settlement amount. So there’s going to be more than just a financial hassle attached to this endeavor. But still, even if the debts have a date when they were supposed to “fall off” your credit report, I’d still pay them. Collectors will still chase you in an effort to collect even if they’ve fallen off your record. They aren’t supposed to do that, but many do. And it can hit you at exactly the wrong time—like when you try to get a mortgage.

I think this is a good idea, Patricia. Just expect a little work and a few headaches in the process. Getting this stuff out of the way will improve your quality of life, and besides, it’s your debt. It’s your responsibility to pay it, plus it’s the honorable thing to do! —Dave * Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. Chronic cough or cold could be COPD You may have heard the term COPD before -- either in a radio or television commercial. COPD, short for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a serious lung disease that over time makes it hard to breathe. Also known as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, it is the third leading cause of death in the United States, but as many as 12 million Americans don’t even know they have it. Unfortunately, symptoms are often shrugged off as a normal part of getting older or a consequence of being out of shape. And during cold and flu season, COPD symptoms can also be mistaken for that cold or cough that just won’t go away. But COPD can be a dangerous health hazard. If left untreated, it can have debilitating effects on everyday activities. Affecting one in five adults in the U.S. over the age of 45 and an estimated 24 million Americans, as many as half remain undiagnosed. In people who have COPD, the airway tubes that carry air

in and out of your lungs are partially blocked, making it hard to breathe. The disease develops slowly and usually worsens over time. So don’t ignore the first signs of COPD, which include a chronic cough, hacking, wheezing and shortness of breath. COPD occurs most often in people age 40 and over with a history of smoking, affecting both current and former smokers. However, as many as one out of six people with COPD have never smoked. Other risk factors include longterm exposure to second hand smoke, certain chemicals, and dust or fumes in the workplace. In some people, COPD can be caused by a genetic condition known as alpha-1 antitrypsin, or AAT, deficiency. “While there is no cure for COPD -- early diagnosis and treatment can help people with the disease improve their symptoms and get back to the things they love doing,” said James P. Kiley, PhD. Director,

JPC-PROD - Fotolia.com

Division of Lung Diseases, at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health. “As we head into the colder months, take the first step to breathing better. Learn more about COPD and schedule an appointment to talk with your doctor or health care provider about your lungs.” COPD can usually be diagnosed by a doctor or health care
