North High Science Chair Selected for MIT Summer Program Mike Heinz has been selected as one of approximately 40 teachers worldwide Downers Grove North High School Science Department Chair Mike Heinz has been selected as one of approximately 40 teachers worldwide to participate in the 2019 MIT Science and Engineering Program for Teachers. Held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, the week-long program in July will include hands-on sessions, lectures from MIT faculty, and introductions to the latest research on campus.

“Anyone who knows Mike knows how passionate he is about both students and science,” says Janice Schwarze, principal at North High. “This opportunity acknowledges his talents and will enhance his knowledge and abilities even further to bring back to our school and community in the fall.”

According to MIT, teachers from all over the world will attend the program, bringing together diverse backgrounds in science, technology, math, and education. Heinz’s application “stood out because of the innovation, creativity, and leadership” he demonstrates in his teaching. Teachers were also selected based on how well they integrate technology in their classrooms as well as their demonstrated innovation in their teaching practice.

This summer will mark the 30th annual Science and Engineering Program for Teachers at MIT.

DGS students win awards at Symposium Downers Grove South High School students earn awards at High School Research Symposium at Illinois State

Downers Grove South High School participated in and earned awards at the 18th Annual High School Research Symposium at Illinois State University.

Research Club members and sophomores Rainu George and Matthew Jablonski earned first place in the Cellular Biology category.

The students created posters, presented their work to judges and answered questions from judges.

Junior Andrew Musielak presented his project in the Physics category and received the overall graduate student award.

A group of ISU science graduate students served as judges and selected his project as the best across all categories.

“This symposium is a big deal for our students,” said South science teacher Michelle Sachtleben, “I feel like our society is quick to sing praises for great physical accomplishments, but the students in Research Club worked so hard for so many months and this was one of the few venues where their work can be showcased along with other high school students.”

With the projects being judged heavily on the science category, the posters presented needed to concisely and correctly explain the research including background, methods, hypothesis, results and conclusion.

The poster must have been visually appealing and the verbal communication had to be clear to be judged highly.

The students not only had to have this displayed, but they had to demonstrate their understanding by answering judges’ questions.

Presentations were rated Division I (superior) through Division IV (fair.), and all of the students that attended received Division II (excellent) or higher.

“Of course everyone who hears about this award at DGS is proud of the students,” Sachtleben said.

“They work all year running experiments, examining data and working with their mentors to be able to present their research. These students are presenting research

that in some cases can rival college graduate student presentations [which is actually] not my words, but one of the ISU judges [words].”

A title, name of school and affiliation, abstract, introduction, hypothesis, methods, results, conclusions, references and a separate abstract page were all heavily suggested sections and headings

for the much talked about posters to display their work for those students participating in the event.

For Sachtleben, even though this has been the school’s third year attending the competition, she was elated to see all of the students hard work pay off in the end.

“I sponsor the club with my coworker Scott Howard and every

year, the month leading up to the competition is stressful for the students and for us,” Sachtleben said.. “ “We always breathe a sigh of relief when it’s over and are incredibly proud and happy for the kids and really share in their sense of accomplishment. It’s pretty exciting to see what great things they can do when provided the opportunity.”

DESERVED Pair of local coaches tabbed as Coach of the Year by Illinois Basketball Coaches’ Association

A pair of area coaches were honored this month by the Illinois Basketball Coaches’ Association as 2019 Coaches of the Year.

Downers Grove North boys coach Jim Thomas earned the award for the first time in his career after leading the Trojans to a 23-11 record. He was named Coach of the Year for Class 4A, District 7.

The 23 wins were the most by a North program in 10 years, won the program’s first regional championship since 2003 and advanced the second furthest in school history behind 1999 team that beat the Dwayne Wade-led Richards team to go to the super-sectional “Awards such as this reflect the collective efforts by many both in an out of our program,” Thomas said. “The programming our DGN and Wolfpack (feeder program) staff continues to provide the athletes in our community is exceptional and is paying dividends. It goes without saying that all the credit should go to the athletes for their commitment to one another and our program.”

North went on a run through the end of the season and the IHSA tournament, claiming the

Downers Grove South Regional title with a win over its crosstown rival Mustangs, then beat Lake Park 46-44 in overtime in the Bartlett Sectional semifinal before falling 75-70 to Geneva in the sectional final.

The run all came on the heels of the death of Downers Grove North volleyball player Beth Dunlap in a hit-and-run accident in front of the school.

“Putting together a great few weeks of basketball at the end of the season was special. Seeing the hard work and perseverance of the athletes was a lot of fun for our program and fans,” Thomas said. “We won our first regional championship in convincing fashion at Downers Grove South. We then went on to win against a very talented Lake Park team in overtime to get to the sectional final. In the sectional final against Geneva, we were down as much as 23 in the third quarter and had it to one with under a minute to play.

The energy and emotion running through those gyms along with the people supporting our school with the #BethStrong made it a memorable one at the end.”

Also receiving the honor was Westmont boys coach Craig Etheridge. He won for District 7, Class 2A.

IBCA FROM PAGE 5 It is the fourth time in his career that Etheridge has been recognized as the IBCA Coach of the Year, previously winning in 2000, 2001 and 2009.

“I’m honored to be recognized for the success that my team had this season. I’d love to take all of the credit but the truth is, I was assisted by a great coaching staff and a group of outstanding, selfless athletes that believed in each other and the program,” Etheridge said.

The Sentinels posted a 25-7 overall record this season, the

most wins in 10 years.

Along the way, Westmont won the Lisle Thanksgiving Tournament, the Wilmington Winter Classic and ICCP/Westmont Holiday Tournament as well as winning the Beecher Regional title with a 59-43 win over Southland College Prep Charter.

“I first met most of my seniors when they walked into my summer camp as third graders,” Etheridge said. “Even back then you could tell that they had the possibility to be really good.

I’ve really enjoyed watching their growth and development as players and people.”

Emergency fund can be filled with additional income Q. My fiancé and I just started your class, but we’re having trouble getting our beginner emergency fund together. We both work full-time, and I make $59,000 a year while he has worked in retail for several years and makes $22,000 to $25,000.

I’m trying to manage a couple of side jobs, but we just can’t seem to get our budget to work in a way that will allow us to save anything. Can you help us?

A. First of all, your finances should remain separate until you’re married. There’s shouldn’t be a “we” in terms of money at this point. You can always run a single budget that you both look at and prepare for after you’re married, but right now he shouldn’t be paying your bills and you shouldn’t be paying his bills.

The biggest problem I see is that he’s making no money. He needs to get a better job. He can’t pay his bills, and in the process, he’s sucking you dry.

I’m sure your fiancé is a good, hard-working man, but he needs to make a serious career shift soon • like now!

In the meantime, this guy needs to take on a part-time job or two until he gets that career shifted. It’s not really a budgeting problem you’re looking at.

It’s an income issue.

Q. We’re wondering if we should diversify our investments by hiring multiple advisors with different companies, so we won’t have all our eggs in one basket. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

A. I would get one advisor, and I wouldn’t invest all my mutual funds in one fund. Virtually all mutual fund advisors can sell pretty much any mutual fund, and you can buy an array of different mutual funds from different companies through one advisor. That gives you diversification. So, there’s really no advantage in having multiple advisors, unless you don’t trust someone’s advice. And if you don’t trust someone’s advice, why are you working with them in the first place?

I personally have one financial advisor, and I trust that person. Still, I ask lots of questions

and make sure I understand everything that’s going on with my money and the investment before making a decision. Why are you recommending this?

What is it about them you like?

Show me the fund and how it compares to the S&P and other funds in the same category. If you approach it this way, and again, you have one advisor, it’s a learning process and you be-

come a more educated investor.

Plus, after a while you can create your own diversification.

Never put money into something you don’t fully understand!
