A Guiding Light this holiday season Pain of loss honored through Plainfield church’s Blue Christmas Worship Service
T
he holiday season is supposed to be a time of happiness and good cheer, but for some people, the festivities can be stressful and filled with melancholy. To help those suffering from the holiday blues, one local church is offering a special worship service. At 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, Plainfield Congregational United Church of Christ is offering an interfaith Blue Christmas Worship Service.
This service honors the pain of loss that many people feel during the holidays but seldom fully acknowledge amid cheerful carols and holiday festivities. Loss of a loved one, unemployment, foreclosure, divorce, or unstable financial security all are triggers to a less than happy holiday season, said worship coordinator Eileen Diercks. “Sadness and holiday blues come from more than recent deaths,” she said. “There are also many for whom the holiday season continues to

be difficult because it marks the anniversary of the death of a loved one. There are even more people who are facing and have faced other losses, such as the loss of a job, loss of family and friends due to relocation, divorce and the like, as well as losses due to serious illness or accidents.” The service includes quiet music, scripture and a time for prayer open to the entire community. Following worship, attendees are invited to remain for a time of conversation and light refreshments. Articles that offer ideas to help cope with the holidays will be available. The Rev. Marie Paterik and the congregation’s Stephen Ministers also will be on hand See BLUE, page 5
