“The Screen Zombie – How to Develop a Healthy Relationship with Social Media” was originally scheduled for January 31, 2019 but was cancelled because of the dangerous cold weather that day.

Social media has become such a dominant force that it can become dangerous for some people, especially children and adolescents.

The Plainfield Parent Community Network (PPCN) will present this special free program in both English and Spanish. It will be recorded and linked on the PPCN website.

“Social media is so prevalent in our world that we as adults sometimes lose track of it in our children’s lives and don’t always understand the impact it can have,” said Tim Albores, District 202 director of high school student services.

Landmark finally gets official status Plymouth Congregational Church building is oldest operating church building in Will County

You already know where we’re talking about, right?

The Plymouth Congregational Church building has been a landmark for decades. And now, it’s official.

On Feb. 4, the village board unanimously granted the structure at 24022 W. Lockport Street status as a Village of Plainfield Historic Landmark.

Pastor William Beagle requested the designation and said it is the oldest operating church building in Will County.

Village Associate Planner Kendra Kuehlem said the Historic Preservation Commission also unanimously recommended landmark status.

Trustees agreed the background material that accompanied the application was the most comprehensive information any nominee has submitted to the village.

Materials submitted with the nomination show the Congregational Society purchased the halfacre site for $40 in 1849.

The congregation, which began in 1834 with four families originally from New York and New England, had been sharing a log school with the Methodists for Sunday services.

The church was constructed over the next two years with “Ionic columns flanking nearly nine-foot double doors with a hewn timber frame resting on a foundation of locally quarried limestone.”

In 2002, the church expanded the building to the west and north — adding Sunday school classrooms and additional restrooms.

When the original bell tower was damaged by lightning in 1887, the belfry was topped by a round dome for nearly 90 years until another pointed steeple was installed.

The pipe organ put in the sanctuary in 1925 lasted for 75 years before being replaced.

Outside of its religious history, the church was where Plainfield volunteers enlisted at the beginning of the Civil War. In 1940, the church got $2,000 for selling the north 56 feet of their property to the Plainfield Public Library, which occupies that location today.

According to the landmark nomination, the Greek Revival style of architecture promoted classical ideals and elements inspired by ancient Greek temples and was popular from the 1820s to the 1860s. Greek Revival is the largest architectural style in Plainfield with over 40 structures exemplifying the design.

Townhouse proposal rejected again Board votes 4-1 against rezoning

Village officials have rejected another site plan for a proposed townhouse development at Park West in Plainfield.

On Feb. 4 the Plainfield Village Board voted 4-1 against a re-zoning of 11.5 acres on the north side of 127th Street west of 248th Avenue. The parcel, which is owned by Grace Pointe Church, is south of the Canterbury Woods subdivision and across the road from the King’s Crossing subdivision. At previous meetings, residents from those neighborhoods raised concerns about traffic and density. The Creative World preschool is also nearby.

“The general concept has been a retrofit,” Director of Planning Jonathan Proulx told the board. “It was (initially) planned for a church, a water main was extended through the property, but that never came to fruition. This isn’t re-

ally a blank slate.”

AP Homes, LLC first requested a 70-unit development, but came back this time with a 51-unit proposal after hearing feedback from the village board and planning and zoning commission. The plan considered Feb. 4 had five 6-unit two-story buildings and three 5-unit two-story buildings. The lots would occupy about six acres and the rest of the property would include a park area, two tree-covered outlots and stormwater retention pond.

“This seems to be a whole new plan,” said Trustee Edward O’Rourke, who voted in favor of the proposal. “It eliminates the (vehicle) access to the north out to 248th Avenue.

That’s now proposed as a pedestrian path.”

Trustee Larry Newton felt the proposal’s density was still too high. Current zoning would allow for 2 to 3 dettached single-family homes per acre.

“But is it reasonable to expect a developer to come forward knowing he can only build 24 to 36 homes?”

O’Rourke asked.

“There’s a need for product, but I don’t see it being a

huge return on investment for a developer,” Trustee Cally Larson noted. The recapture fees for both sanitary sewage and roadway were paid by the church when the land was originally subdivided.

There are 12 townhouse developments within Plainfield.

A staff report given to trustees said single-family housing is impractical for the Grace Pointe land site.

“While there will be additional traffic created, the positive factors of the proposed project will not make the project be a substantial detriment to adjacent property,” the report stated. “(The) staff believes the proposed planned development efficiently utilizes a smaller block of land and the development proposal offers a number of enhancements,” the report concluded.

After the board rejected the re-zoning proposal and preliminary plat, it was uncertain if the developer will make a third attempt with another revised proposal.

“If we don’t like it any better we should tell him that up front instead of spending the money on another plan,” O’Rourke said.

Central, South, East HS artists win national awards 20 student artists recognized Twenty student artists from Plainfield Central, South and East high schools won 36 regional awards in the prestigious 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards allows 7th through 12th grade students nationwide to submit works of art or

writing for the chance to win scholarships and have their work published or exhibited by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.

The contest is sponsored by the Scholastic book company. Entries are judged by renowned artists and writers.

More than nine million student writers and artists have been recognized since 1923.

Past winners include such art and literary luminaries as Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Tru-

man Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King and John Updike.

“Gold Key” works will now be considered for national-level recognition. National Medals will be awarded later this spring. The top entries at the national level will be displayed this spring and summer as part of the organization’s national tour.

Special ed. administrator moving to Plainfield South Special Education Administrator Elizabeth Massaro will serve as the special education administrator Elizabeth Massaro District 202 Special Education Administrator Elizabeth Massaro will serve as the special education administrator at Plainfield South High School next year.

Massaro, who has worked in District 202 since 2008 will replace current PSHS Special Education Administrator Beth Sanna, who is retiring in June.

The Board of Education approved Massaro’s new role at its February 11, 2019 regular meeting.

Massaro started her educa-

tion career in May 2008 as a student aide at Palos East Elementary School. She joined District 202 later that year as a special education teacher at both Plainfield North and East high schools.

She took over the Extended School Year summer school program in 2016, and was named a district-level special education administrator for elementary in 2017.

“We are very excited to bring Liz on board back at the high school level,” said Tim Albores, director for high school student services.

“We are definitely going to miss Beth Sanna, but we feel that Liz will be a wonderful fit with the very talented people at Plainfield South,” Albores said.

Middle school students headed to regional Spelling Bee Seven District 202 middle school students will compete in the 2019 Will County Regional Spelling Bee on March 7, 2019 at Lockport East High School.

The students earned the honor by winning their individual schools’ Spelling Bees.

Suspected bank robber Sixth gun taken off streets in nine weeks fatally shot by police Shorewood police finding firearms during traffic stops

A suspected bank robber was fatally shot during a fight with police Feb. 6.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m.

Bruce W. Carter Jr., 38, allegedly walked into First Midwest Bank, 1415 W. Jefferson St., and approached a teller.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Carter handed the teller a note demanding money, but did not show he was carrying any weapons. Carter “reached over the counter and into the money drawer, removing currency... and fleeing the bank on foot,” the FBI said in a news release.

The teller was not injured.

Joliet Police Deputy Chief Darrell Gavin said investigators used still photographs from surveillance video at the bank and witness statements to connect the suspect to a temporary employment office in Joliet.

“After Carter was identified, detectives went to different locations associated with his records, including a residence in the 200 block of South Des Plaines Street,” Gavin said.

About 11:20 a.m. police arrived and began speaking with Carter when a struggle began near the front porch.

“Mr. Carter was armed with a boxcutter-style razor knife during this struggle (and) the officer discharged his firearm, striking Mr. Carter,” said Ken Kroll, Chairman of the WillGrundy Major Crimes Task Force. According to Kroll, a witness statement corroborates the physical evidence showing the struggle took place. Investigators did find a boxcutter, he said.

Carter was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 11:55 a.m. An autopsy performed Feb. 7 at the Will County Coroner’s office shows he died from multiple gunshot wounds.

“As a matter of department policy and procedure, the officer was taken to Silver Cross Hospital without physical injury, and placed on administrative leave,” Kroll said. The officer’s name is being withheld pending completion of the investigation.

“Under our regulations, an officer-involved shooting has to be investigated by an outside agency, so the Major Crimes Task Force was called in,” Joliet Police Chief Al Roechner said.

“Until their investigation is complete, we cannot comment on the incident.”

Kroll said investigators will conduct interviews and review evidence before submitting a report to the Will County State’s Attorney’s office. The state’s attorney will determine if any charges are filed as a result of this incident.

Will County Court records show that Carter pleaded guilty to armed robbery in 1999 and

was sentenced to two years of probation, which was not completed satisfactorily. In 2001, the Illinois Conservation Police fined Carter $100 for fishing without a permit.

Police seized another gun during a traffic stop — the sixth time a firearm has been found in a vehicle in the last nine weeks.

“The Chief recently initiated a big increase in our traffic enforcement efforts and this has been one of the results,” Deputy Chief Eric Allen noted.

Shortly after 3 p.m. Feb. 4, an officer on patrol spotted a silver Oldsmobile Alero with a cracked windshield near Seil Road and Route 59, Allen said.

The Alero went faster than the posted speed limit and the officer pulled the vehicle over near Sarah Avenue, according to reports.

by Brandon M. Montgomery, 26, of the 1800 block of Great Falls Drive in Plainfield and contained one passenger.

“The officer approached the vehicle and could see roaches the ends of marijuana cigarettes - by the gear shift,” Allen said.

“When he asked about them, the driver passed them to him and he could smell the odor of cannabis.”

Police had the occupants exit the vehicle and reportedly found a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson pistol under the driver’s seat. The weapon had a full magazine and a hollow-point round in the chamber, Allen said.

Montgomery’s firearm owner’s identification card has been revoked, according to police.

He was arrested on a charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and booked into the Will County jail.

According to Will County court records, Montgomery has received several citations for traffic violations. He was ticketed for speeding by Joliet police in October and by Shorewood police in November.

“I don’t think there’s a rhyme or reason to an increase in gun (recovery),” Chief Aaron Klima said. “It’s something we’re always going to look for and if they’re out there, I hope we get them.”

Local delivery nurse retires after 34 years After many years bringing babies into the world, long-time professional looks forward to retirement

After 34 years of helping parents welcome new babies into the world, Edward Hospital’s Sandy Bumber, RN, an obstetrics (OB) nurse, put away her stethoscope for good on October 20, 2018.

The Lockport resident marked the occasion by taking off on what she called Sandy B.’s retirement tour, covering Atlanta, Orlando and Myrtle Beach, S.C. In addition to more adventures ahead, her retirement will call for some adjustment.

“I loved it, and if I hadn’t gotten so old I would of kept going,” Bumber said jokingly. “I’m going to miss seeing my little babies, and seeing the moms and dads faces after brining that little creation to earth.”

Not long after graduating high school, Bumber married and started a family with her husband Jim. When the youngest of her five chil-

dren was about 12, she decided it was time to pursue her other lifetime goal — a career as a labor and delivery nurse. She knew school wouldn’t be easy while working and raising a family, but she persevered, earning an associate’s degree in nursing in 1984.

This was soon followed by a job offer in labor and delivery at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet. When Bumber came to Edward in 1998 with 14 years of nursing experience, she was hired as a charge nurse in labor and delivery.

Bumber has received the best endorsement for her role as a labor and delivery nurse from her own family members.

She was invited to participate in the delivery of 11 of her grandchildren when she worked at Silver Cross Hospital and 10 of her great-grandchildren during her tenure at Edward. Bumber’s close-knit family includes daughters Cindy Eaton, 55; Trish Ruzzini, 54; Jami Swearengen, 50; Becki Beal, 48 and son Shane Bumber, 52, and their spouses. In all, Sandy has 16 grand-

For the 74-year-old, she said that even though she wishes she could of still kept working, she has been enjoying this nice change of pace while traveling and spending some good quality time with her family.

“I had some family members and friends throw me some parties right after which was really nice. I told my kids it’s kind of like dying at your own wake, but you get to see all these people in real life come up and talk to you,” Bumber said jokingly. In Bumber’s 34 years of experience, she said that she has seen a lot over the years, but being able to help out her family during the birthing experience is something she will always cherish.

“I’ve been in a lot of my own families deliveries including some of my children and grandchildren,” Bumber said. “Those have been very special for me to say I was the delivery nurse for my great grandbabies.”

Plainfield South takes second at state

Less than two weeks ago, the Plainfield South cheerleading team made history. The Cougars came through, not only for themselves but for their school.

South took home second place in the Co-Ed Division of the IHSA Competitive Cheerleading Finals that were held on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1 and 2 at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.

It was not only the first trophy for the Cougars in the sport, but it was also only the second one ever for the school, which opened its doors for the 2002-03 school year. The only other state trophy in school history was a state championship in boys bowling in the 2009-10 school year.

“Hearing our name for State Runner-Up in the coed division [that] weekend is something we will forever remember,” South coach Brooke Twohill said. “This is our third year in the coed division.

We placed 4th in 2018 and 9th in 2017. I took over the program in 2015 and could not be more proud of our program growth and success.

“Our goals for this season included conference champions, sectional champions, and podium in which we reached every single one of those goals. After we got off the bus from state I had the team go to our goal board and together the seniors put a check by each goal we set in May. We are currently the fourth sectional champion for our school [softball in 2008, boys track and field in 2011, and baseball in 2016], and second state trophy. We are the highest placing cheerleading team in District 202 history and have the only IHSA State Trophy for cheerleading in our district.”

It was the fourth consecutive trophy for the Blue Thunder, who placed second in the same division in 2016.

Plainfield South (93.43) was second, Grant (93.24) took third and South Elgin (91.77) rounded out the top four teams.

Buffalo Grove (91.24) which captured six straight trophies, including a trio of first place finishes (13, 15, and 16) between 2012-17 placed fifth. Lockport Township (89.44) was sixth, followed by Joliet Central (85.31) Shepard (84.56), Metea Valley (83.02), and Lake Park

(80.09) rounded out the Top 10.

The members of the Cougars team were seniors Orlando DeYoung, Madilyn Hall, Kaitlin McCann, and Alyssa Plata. Juniors Fabian Arteaga, Cadey Chartrand, Lillian Goorsky, Jordan Lipowski, Aubry Mikel, Bree Slaby, Ashley Suddreth, and Bria Trenor. Sophomores Jairus Bowman, Tenley Brown, Ellie Grundon, Jazmin Jimenez, David Ochoa, Isabella Rios, Maggie Schoener, and Devin Stapleton. Freshman Emilee Trunnell rounded out the squad.

Assistant coaches were Emily Durham, Alyssa Padilla, and Keri Storako.

“It felt so rewarding to accomplish something with my teammates that we’ve been working at for so long,” said DeYoung, who

was a three-year varsity member and the only male senior on the team. “We put so much time and effort into this and getting a trophy as a physical representation of our hard work is an amazing feeling.

“From the beginning of the season, I felt that we would be successful. But I think it really hit me that we could be one of the top teams in the state when we put a large emphasis on the smaller details of our routine and started to see how that was being positively reflected on the scoresheet.”

His senior teammates agreed.

“Being able to be named one of the top two teams in the state is incredibly rewarding and a memory that will last a lifetime,” McCann, a 2-year varsity member said. “It still feels surreal but knowing that the

hard work, time, and commit our coaches, parents, volunteers, and every athlete on this team paid off is the most rewarding thing.

“I think I knew a top team finish in the state was possible outside of competitions and inside practice.

I could really feel the love everybody in practice had for not only each other but this sport. I knew we were all on the same mindset of the goals we wanted to achieve through all we put in at practices and that made our team even more motivated to accomplish our goals together.”

Plata is the only senior who was a 4-year varsity member.

Plainfield East defeats South in cross-town battle

The Plainfield East Bengals boys basketball team seemingly could not have started of the game against the Plainfield South Cougars much better than they did Friday night which led to its first win in three games with a final score of 72-59.

Running out into transition, getting put-back dunks and knocking down almost every 3-point shot taken was the reality for the Bengals offense.

South saw its team down 27-11 heading into the second quarter of play, but South head coach Tim Boe knew his team didn’t have any quit in it.

“They were hot, they were very hot,” Boe said. “I was proud of the way our guys withstood it, we kept the intensity up and we showed no quit.”

East head Coach Michael Fowler’s squad didn’t make it any easier, where it finished out the first quarter just as well as they started it on a 7-0 run.

In the second quarter, the Cougars (8-14, 0-6) managed to cut down the lead to 10 points, but the Bengal’s offense rallied off seven consecutive points behind junior forward Christian Shumate (23 points).

“That big momentum swing at the beginning of the game is what really helped us out for the rest of the game,” Shumate said. “There’s a little bit more energy whenever we play another Plainfield school, it can go either way every time so you never really know what is going to happen.”

At the half, the Bengals went into the locker room with their heads held high leading by a score of 42-

27.

In the second half of play, not much changed for Boe’s crew as they fell behind to nearly 20 points However, South had a reason to feel confident behind sophomore guard Cooper Schmid where the Cougars went on an 11-0 run.

Even though there was a moment of trepidation from the Bengals, they managed to pull away after South got the game within two points with just five minutes on the clock remaining.

“I felt like for us not playing in a week we came out with great energy and a great will to score the basketball,” Fowler said. “When the last two games you have played are losses, you question how you will come out of the gate to open a game up.

“The nice part about it though was we were at home and we talked about getting back to winning ways and that’s what happened here tonight.”

At points, everyone was tired and kinda wanted to give up but hearing our name called made all the work worth it.

“We had a really amazing season, one I will remember forever. There were times where when we were winning all these invitationals that I realized that this year we could be our year, that we could no longer be counted out and at that point.

That’s when everyone really knew we couldn’t settle and had to keep pushing for more.”

Hall was on the varsity the past three years. She will also never forget it.

“Getting podium was probably the most rewarding feeling because we as a team finished our last puzzle piece, we worked so hard, and for it to have finally paid off was a very special moment. I think for me after a couple competitions after getting our score sheets back and hearing such positive feedback and encouraging suggestions from judges and then people wanting to work with us because they could see the potential it really hit me.

“Plainfield South varsity cheer has such a special place in my heart and I know in my teammate’s heart as well. For next year they just need to remember the feeling from state ‘18-19 and strive for more. Our success stems from the love we have for each other and our coaches.”

“As a senior, I hope that as many of my teammates are going to continue to cheer on Plainfield South varsity cheer in the following years,” McCann said. “I know all this team has brought me in the past years and I hope that they continue to grow with Plainfield South varsity cheer. I think having as many previous athletes on the team would help for future goals as I feel one of the main reasons for our success was not only our coaches but our relationships with our teammates.

Our trust in each other made us a family and took us to what we have accomplished this season.”

DeYoung agreed.

“This year a lot of the team were sophomores and juniors,” he said. “I have no doubts that next year they will step up and guide the people who may not have had the chance to perform with Plainfield South varsity cheer in previous years. Also having full trust in their coaches will help them succeed throughout their season and hopefully end up in that top spot.”

While Plata is graduating she’s excited at the prospect of the Cougars moving up to the top spot in the state.

“Everyone goes their separate ways each year and you gain some and you lose some, but I believe that’s what makes Plainfield South varsity cheer. The challenge to come together as a family and fight for what you want. There is no doubt in my mind that coach Twohill can lead the Cougars to a state title, and I wish them nothing but the best.”

Sophomore Lauryn Hilliard and senior Andrea Winston each scored six points for the Bengals.

The 2018-19 Bengals added victories against Rich Central, Lemont, Waubonsie Valley and East Aurora.

“It’s really hard to believe that our season is over,” Waznonis said.

“It’s seems just like yesterday, talking about our win over Proviso East. We had a number of injuries throughout the season, that hurt

us. This season, for all of the area schools, there was an abnormal amount of injuries, in girls’ basketball.

“We played very well against the SPC’s undefeated, champion Minooka (26-3) and lost to secondplace Oswego, by just two points 56-54. We return four starters, plus our second-leading scorer, freshman, Taylor French in 2019-20.”

Know what’s at stake with co-signer DEAR DAVE, My mom is single, and she co-signed on my student loans for college. Would it affect her credit if I couldn’t or didn’t make the payments?

TERRI DEAR TERRI, Yes, it would. The truth is, your mom shouldn’t have cosigned for you in the first place.

There’s only one reason lenders want a co-signer, and that’s because they’re afraid the person

taking out the loan won’t be able to pay back what’s owed.

You’ll be trashing your and your mom’s credit if you don’t pay the bills on time. If she cosigned for you, and you don’t do the right thing and pay back the loans, she’ll start getting phone calls looking for the money, too.

I don’t think you want to subject your mom to the stress and hassle of collector calls or bad marks on her credit, do you?

Believe me, I understand what happened. Your mom loves you, and she wants the best for you.

She’s willing to do whatever it takes to help her daughter succeed. What I want you both to understand going forward is that the idea you have to borrow money to attend college — or do anything else, really — is a myth. There are many ways to get a great education, and find excellent career opportunities, without borrowing a dime.

Scholarships and grants are everywhere these days. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with working before and during college to help cash-flow an education, or you can begin your studies at a community college where the costs are much less.

In addition to four-year schools and community colleges, anyone looking to further their education shouldn’t ignore the possibility of trade or technical schools. At these institutions, you can get valuable

training that’s highly marketable. Not to mention completing a trade or technical school program usually takes less time and is cheaper than a bachelor’s degree.

My goal here isn’t to fuss at you or beat you up, Terri. It’s just very important you understand what’s at stake — now and in the future. My hope is to give you and your mom some good information that will help each of you make smarter, more informed financial decisions down the road!
