Batinick’s ‘Helping Hands’ to protect elderly during COVID-19 Program will help the elderly and those at risk with any errands they may need during the coronavirus threat

P

LAINFIELD- State Representative Mark Batinick (RPlainfield) recently launched a program to help senior citizens in his district stay healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of COVID-19 cases has increased exponentially and in more locations across Illinois with the IDPH reporting 93 cases in 13 counties in Illinois yesterday. These cases included all age ranges and do not have a clear connection to travel or a known COVID-19 case. “With the recent updates from the IDPH, it is clear that the coronavirus is circulating in our community,” said Rep. Batinick, whose district covers far west Will County and Eastern Kendall County. “Our most vulnerable members in our community remain the top concern and I am asking for our community to work together to help these people. As the virus continues to affect more and more people, the health and safety of our entire community matters—but some are more

at risk than others.” To work to help the seniors in the area, Batinick has launched a Helping Hands program that will help the elderly and those at risk with any errands they may need during the coronavirus threat. Rep. Batinick is also looking for volunteers to help make this program work. “The elderly and those with underlying health conditions are at serious risk.” Continued Batinick. “My office is strongly encouraging those groups to stay home. If you need to go out for any reason, please contact us, and we can have one of our volunteers do that for you. We can run to the store, library, or pharmacy to get you what you need.” Rep. Batinick also has a resource page on his website, repbatinick.com, to provide the most up to date information from the CDC and IDPH. If you are a senior that needs help with an errand or a volunteer wanting to help out, contact Representative Batinick’s district office at (815) 254-0000.

Plainfield Police issue covid19 response update

The village is currently working on a planned tiered approach to this crisis, ranging from normal operations to a significant interruption of village services

P

lainfield, Illinois - We would like to provide an update on the Village’s response to the COVID19 crisis. First and foremost, as of the writing of this social media post there are no known confirmed cases of COVID19 in either Will or Kendall Counties, or the Plainfield or Oswego Schools Districts. We have been monitoring the situation since well before it became a National Emergency. Approximately two weeks ago, we had an initial meeting with many of the stakeholders in the Village including members of the Village’s Crisis Management Team, representatives from the Plainfield and Oswego Fire Protection District’s, members of the Plainfield and Oswego School Districts, Plainfield Library District, Plainfield and Oswegoland Park Districts, and others. Since that time, this group has met regularly based on changes in the status of the crisis, or changes in response protocols.

MorE info Effective Tuesday (when school is no longer is session), all school resource officers (sros) and dArE officers will be assigned to the Patrol division, so the public will see an increased presence in and around retail stores and neighborhoods. The Village is currently working on a planned tiered approach to this crisis, ranging from normal operations to a significant interruption of Village services. Currently, the Village is operating normally with some minor adjustments such as the use of social distancing to reduce person to person contact. Within the Plainfield Police Department, and Plainfield Emergency Management Agency, we would like to STRONGLY EMPHASIZE, that we

remain ready to respond to any call for service or situation that may develop within the Village. We also remain in constant contact with our mutual aid partners, in the police, fire, and emergency management disciplines. Some of the visible changes the public will see immediately within the Police Department include: All sworn police personnel, including Detectives, School Resource Officers, and others will be working in full police uniform with Plainfield Police identification. Effective Tuesday (when school is no longer is session), all School Resource Officers (SROs) and DARE officers will be assigned to the Patrol Division, so the public will see an increased presence in and around retail stores and neighborhoods. Emergency response personnel will be utilizing social distancing (typically trying to remain six (6) feet away from any other person). So please don’t be upset if a member of the Police Department or EMA will not shake your hand or stands a distance away from you during an encounter. Emergency responders may don

some Personal Protective Equipment (face mask, gloves, goggles, etc.) if they go into an environment where an illness may be present or is unknown. Again, we want to assure all residents and visitors to the Village of Plainfield that we are OPEN FOR BUSINESS, we continue to meet with all stakeholders, are taking all necessary protective measures, planning for any changes in the COVID19 status, and are here to serve our community as we do every day. If changes in the situation do occur, we will send out notices to any changes in operations, protocols, or responses as soon as possible. Thank you all for remaining calm during this crisis, looking out for, and working with your neighbors (especially the elderly) to get through this together, and utilizing best sanitary practices.

Plainfield continues to monitor the circumstances around covid-19

The Village continues to monitor the circumstances around COVID-19. At this time, we are not aware of any cases in Will or Kendall County. The Village’s buildings including Village Hall, Public Works, and the Police Department will remain open. However, we are employing social distancing measures at all of the buildings for the protection of the community and our employees. Therefore, you will see changes at each of our facilities to reduce person-to-person contact. We encourage everyone to follow the protocols and recommendations set forth by the CDC and Illinois Department of Public Health including: -Wash your hands thoroughly and often. -Disinfect surfaces people touch regularly. -Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. -Maintain a 6-foot gap to other people when appropriate. -If you feel ill, stay home, and seek the guidance of your physician. As the situation changes, we will provide updates. Thank you for your understanding.

ill County officials held a press conference today to discuss steps that the county is taking to address concerns around COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Officials stressed that the general public is safe and that there has not been an outbreak or any reports of coronavirus in Will County to date. “One of the main things that individuals can do right now is help us prevent the spread of the virus,” said County Health Department Executive Director Susan Olenek. “If you feel sick, stay home. Health Department officials stress that if an individual is feeling sick, they should stay home. Everyone is being encouraged to avoid large public gatherings and wash their hands frequently. “Will County has a robust response team ready for any potential viral outbreak,” said Will County

Speaker Denise Winfrey (D-Joliet). “Our emergency response teams involve many moving parts and include multiple agencies to ensure that all of our bases are covered.” Winfrey said that at this time there does not appear to be an outbreak of COVID-19 in Will County but that officials are coordinating with the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control to address what the World Health Organization has deemed a pandemic. “We are constantly reviewing and updating our action plans based on the direction from the Federal and State government,” said Nick Palmer, Chief of Staff for

To our Readers during COVID-19 concerns

I

n this uncertain time, as we face the COVID-19 pandemic as a nation and as a community, we at Enterprise Newspapers are determined to keep you up to date with the latest information on the outbreak. However, as our drop locations for our paper close due to the shut downs ordered by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, the Bugle, Enterprise and Sentinel newspapers are finding it increasingly more difficult to dispense our print product the way we normally do. While we will still offer our product, we will do so is much fewer locations, as libraries, schools and restaurants are closed to the public. Our papers will still be available in the city or village hall and some other select areas such as police stations and train depots. You may also notice a chance in the format of the product – either a paper with less pages than usual or one that has combined news from all the counties in our coverage area. This will continue for the foreseeable future and we hope to get back to normal as soon as possible. While we strive to continue to bring you news on COVID-19 as well as the uplifting feature stories we have tried to make a staple of our coverage, the cancellations of events and gatherings will make it more challenging until our communities return to normal. For up-to-date information, please return to our website, www.buglenewspapers.com, often. If you have questions or concerns, please email me at mark@buglenewspapers.com. I hope all of our readers and your loved ones come out on the other side of this unprecedented time in our lives healthy and have good stories to tell. In fact, all through your time in quarantine, please send me your stories at the email listed above on how someone in your community made living through this time a little easier. If a stranger shopped for you, a neighbor watched your children, or your employer helped you out with paid time off – we want to hear about it. Even though we cannot be around each other during this time, it doesn’t mean we can’t look out for each other. Thank you all and keep reading,

covid-19 outbreak forces high school, college and professional sports to stop play By MArk GrEGory Editorial director

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

After an epic run through the GLVC tournament, the Lewis University women’s basketball team earned an at-large berth and the NCAA Midwest Region’s sixth seed to the 2019-20 NCAA Tournament. The Flyers headed to Springfield, MO for a March 13 opening game at Drury University against No. Walsh. The game, however, was never played. A day before the game, due to the evolving COVID-19 health crisis the NCAA announced that all winter and spring NCAA sport championships have been canceled. “This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities,” the NCAA said in a statement. “It hurts because we were there and ready to play,” said Lewis coach Sam Quigley. “We practiced and it looked like we were going to get ours in. I know at the end of the day it is about the safety of our community, but that still doesn’t negate the pain and the hurt that the players feel. It has been a long season and to come this far and have it end so abruptly.” Along with the Division-II tour-

nament, the NCAA cancelled the D-I tournament for both the men and women as well as all other events. The news of the NCAA cancellations resonated through the high school ranks and it was not long after when the Illinois High School Association pulled the plug on its winter season. “We appreciate the patience and understanding that we have received from everyone involved in this process over the past 72 hours,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said in a March 12 statement. “We have stressed the fluidity of this situation and have been transparent about the possibility that a suspension or cancellation could occur…The Board considered suspending the events, but after deliberate discussion, did not believe that was a realistic option within the timeline. We feel for everyone who has been impacted, but must put the health and safety of all involved ahead of these events.” The IHSA has not made any decisions related to spring sport tournaments at this time. “It is too early to make any decisions regarding IHSA spring state final tournaments,” Anderson said. “We respect the NCAA’s decision to cancel its spring championships, but also recognize that the exposure and travel by our high school teams is not as expansive as collegiate teams. At this juncture, we

PAGE 6 | Thursday, March 19, 2020 ‘sadness’ from page 5 recommend that all IHSA spring sport teams consult their local health departments, and follow their recommendations on if and how to proceed with practices and regular-season contests.” Three local teams were still left in the IHSA boys basketball playoffs. Joliet West and Notre Dame had each won the sectional semifinal and were set to play in the sectional finals and Benet Academy was to play in a rescheduled sectional semifinal.

The Redwings had their semifinal game postponed because a student at the host school, Hinsdale South, had come in contact with someone thought to be infected with COVID-19. While the student was ultimately found to be negative for the virus, the rescheduled game never got played. “I told the kids that I was very proud of them, for the way they represented Benet Academy, after having to adjust to a very difficult situation,” said Benet coach Gene Heidkamp. “What was so difficult for our players and coaches and also Hinsdale South’s players and

coaches, was that we were told that we were going to play. Seniors for both schools’ careers abruptly ended. How does one explain to a 17-18 year old boy that he won’t be playing basketball anymore? It’s not just us and Hinsdale South, it’s all the other school’s, that were still playing, too. “We got back to school and we sat down and discussed the issue. We came to closure on the issue. Benet Academy and all the school’s involved are victims of circumstances far beyond our control.” Notre Dame was the No. 1 ranked team by the Associated Press most

of the season. “Across the board, I feel bad for our team and our players, but also for all the teams that were alive across the state,” said Notre Dame coach Kevin Clancy. “To end your season without the ability to compete, I feel for the kids. I give a lot of credit to the IHSA. They did their best to extend this thing within reason and it got to a point where it was the right thing to do. It was a roller coaster of emotions and information. Our team was awesome. We practiced and we went about with our preparation. The NCAA had just cancelled and we

thought it could be coming, but we got information that the IHSA was going to go on with 60 fans per team and we walked out of the gym thinking we were playing. We won 29 games, which was a school record for us, and quite frankly, I thought we played the best schedule in the state outside of the teams that went national this year. Our seniors had an opportunity to make a pretty good run and there will always be that wondering and unknown of, ‘we could have.’ But, they should be extremely proud of what they have done, I just know that doesn’t make it any easier.”

Consider adding an umbrella policy to insurance it’s always a good idea to plan ahead and do whatever you can to keep the size of the target on your back relatively small dear dave: We live in Colorado, and we need some advice on protecting our assets. My wife is a teacher, and I’m a nurse. We make around $180,000 a year combined, and we’re set to pay off our home next month. We also have two teenagers who are both driving, so we were wondering about the best way to protect everything if one of them has an accident and we get sued, or something else tragic happens.

spencer A: With your income, and the stage you’re in when it comes to wealth building, I think it’s time to add an umbrella policy. This is a liability policy, and you could probably buy an extra million in liability coverage for around $250 a year. It attaches to the liability policy that’s already part of your homeowners and car insurance. With a couple of teenage drivers in the house it might run a little more than $250, but I wouldn’t think it would be much more, if any. It would just add an extra million to the mix, just in case someone decided they were going to

Foster on passage of Families First Coronavirus Response Act There is nothing more important than protecting the health and well-being of the American people

O

n March 14, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic: “I voted for this legislation because our nation is facing a public health emergency and the government has a duty to do all that it can to support the well-being of the American people.

“This legislation includes several vital provisions that will immediately begin helping American families, like free coronavirus testing for all who need it, paid emergency leave so that people can focus on what matters most, enhanced employment insurance for people who might be laid off from work in the coming months, and increases in Medicaid funding for states like Illinois that will face increased costs as they deal with this pandemic. “There is nothing more important than protecting the health and well-being of the American people. We must confront this pandemic and restore peace-of-mind to the public.”
