Batinick urges seniors to stay home, utilize ‘Helping Hands’ Program will help the elderly and those at risk with any errands they may need during the coronavirus threat

P

LAINFIELD—State Representative Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield) is urging senior citizens, who are most at risk to the coronavirus, to stay home and allow his district program to run errands for them. Last Friday, Rep. Batinick launched ‘Helping Hands,’ a program that would run any errands senior citizens may need

to help them stay isolated and remain healthy. Today, Rep. Batinick is renewing his call for the senior citizens in his 97th District to take the self-isolation instructions seriously as the spread of the coronavirus worsens and the number of elderly persons affected only continues to increase.

“Right now it is essential for seniors to stay in their homes,” said Batinick. “The coronavirus is continuing to spread and we need everyone to be taking this threat seriously—especially our seniors because they are at an incredible risk. We are all in this together and we need to hold each other accountable. I want neighbors to check on neighbors. I want seniors to be able to ask for help, which is what my office is here for.” While Rep. Batinick has navigated

this public health crisis at the state level, he is ready to work with local leaders to ensure the proper organizational structure is in place at the local level for prevention but also to respond as this situation grows in the coming weeks. “If we don’t take self-isolation seriously our collective situation will continue to get worse,” continued Batinick. “I was disappointed to see so many older folks out and about today in our community. The protocols set

up by our health professionals exist for a reason. I am begging all my constituents in the 97th District to follow them and self-isolate to not only protect yourself but those at increased risk.” Rep. Batinick will be calling local seniors starting tomorrow, to see how his office can be of help. If you are a senior who needs a Helping Hand, or a heathy volunteer wanting to contribute, you can contact his office at (815) 254-0000.

Equally of note, Officer van Heeswijk created and implemented the Plainfield Police Explorer Program in 2012 and remains the senior advisor. In this role, Officer van

Heeswijk works with the explorer cadets in the program to serve the police department, the community, and numerous nonprofit organizations such as Special Olympics, Feed My Starving Children, Homeless Shelters, and Women’s Shelters. The Plainfield Police Department Explorer Program has won numerous awards at both the state and national levels. Officer van Heeswijk has exhibited dedication, integrity and pride to his peers, command staff, and the Village of Plainfield. Officer van Heeswijk possesses the characteristics that all in law enforcement should strive to achieve.

Such contact will be made using the best social distancing procedures given each circumstance.

Plainfield Park district playgrounds, athletic courts closed until further notice In an effort to help reduce the transmission of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Plainfield Park District is closing all playgrounds and athletic courts

effective immediately, March 19, 2020, until further notice. Patrons witnessed using any Plainfield Park District playgrounds and athletic courts will be required to stop usage immediately and asked to leave the play areas. We believe that trails and open green spaces can continue to be used in a safe manner that allows people to enjoy the mental and physical health benefits these spaces provide. In all instances, we recommend people follow stated guidelines regarding the use of these spaces and always actively adhere to a safe social distancing measure of at least 6ft. Let us all do our part to use them in a way that respects each other and public health guidance. We are encouraging residents to follow Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines which recommend that parents refrain from organizing play dates, group meet ups, or other social gatherings for their children while school is on break. More information can be found on their website, http://www.dph.illinois.gov/ Further updates on Park District cancellations, closures, and program changes will also be posted on our social media channels. Please be safe, be smart, and stay healthy.

Plainfield Park district issues Corona virus closings Per the direction of Illinois Governor Pritzker’s recent order to reduce the risk of the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) through social distancing and the new CDC recommendation of limiting gatherings to under 50 people, the Plainfield Park District has closed all of its facilities to the public. Because of the rapidly changing nature of the developments surrounding COVID-19, Park District staff will re-assess the evolving situation on a weekly basis to determine when facilities can safely re-open to residents and programming can resume. Closed facilities include: The Prairie Activity & Recreation Center (PARC), and Prairie

time, knowledge can erase fear dear dave, I went through a divorce a couple of months ago, and I’m not sure what to do next. I received custody of our kids, ages 13 and 15, plus I have a good job and I got the house in the settlement. It’s a nice, simple home, but it’s paid for and worth about $200,000. I receive $1,400 a month in child support, and I got $125,000, which was half our savings. I also have no other debt. Most of my friends are telling me I should begin investing, but they all have different ideas about where I should put the money. Can you give me some guidance?

dear michelle,

michelle

I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through this. Divorce is hard enough when it’s just a couple, but it must be incredibly difficult with kids involved. Make sure you spend lots of time hugging on them, and telling them how much you love them. God bless you guys. Ok, I know your friends are just trying to help, but I wouldn’t follow their financial advice right now. The trauma from your divorce is still fresh, and you should never make important, long-range decisions when your emotions are messed up. If there’s anything positive in all this, it’s that you’re in a really nice place where your finances are concerned. You’ve got a good job, you have no debt, and you’ve got six figures sitting in the bank. My advice is to park that money in a CD until you feel you’re getting over the shock of what has happened. You won’t make

much money doing this, but you won’t lose any, either. Then, after some time has passed, I want you to find a good financial advisor—one with the heart of a teacher—and look into investing $25,000 in good growth stock mutual funds. I’m talking about ones with at least a 10-year track record of success. Time and knowledge can help erase fear, Michelle. Plus, you’ve got a responsibility to yourself and your kids to invest wisely.

Chicago native helping kids through uncertain times

Jessica fick has been working as a princess for six years and sees this as a chance to help out in a time of need all across the globe By mark gregory editorial director

W

ith boredom really close to setting in for all Americans right now, young children will be the first to have a meltdown – not understanding why they have stay inside, can’t go see grandma or are not allowed to have friends over to play. One Chicago native now living in Iowa is helping the cause. Jessica Fick, who works at the University of Iowa by day, is trading in her Hawkeye yellow and donning her yellow ballgown and long curls and chatting with children as Disney’s Belle in the evenings and on weekends. Jessica has been working as a prin-

cess for six years and sees this as a chance to help out in a time of need all across the globe. “I love it. I originally started dressing like a Princess for sick kids, through a group called Relentless, and have FaceTimed with them over the years when they’re not able to go out or are in the hospital or just need a friend,” Jessica said. “They can’t always do normal kid stuff. The kids now can’t really do normal kid stuff either, so this wasn’t too much different. It seemed logical to apply what I’ve done in the past with the current situation. I think we all have ways we can help make the world a brighter place and this seemed like a good time for me to pull out the princess dress. “The joy and excitement of the

kids’ kind of makes you forget all the seriousness that’s going on in the world and gives you hope. I know that parents and kids are having a tough time of it right now, and this is something I can do to help without anyone having to leave home. It’s great so see the happiness on kids’ faces the excitement that these calls bring. It isn’t much, but right now we can all use a little magic.” To schedule a call for a child, contact Jessica through Facebook, copy and paste this link into your browser https://www.facebook.com/profile. php?id=100002438775362. You can also access her storytime videos on her Instagram at @LadysLitLife. Jessica is doing these calls free of charge over Facebook Messenger, but those wanting to help the magic continue can donate children’s books to read in a story time video — new or used.

He was a life-long resident of Plainfield, IL., where he attended Plainfield High School and was crowned Homecoming King, class of 1979. Jim and his wife Nancy were high school sweethearts, very happily married since October 5, 1985. An amazing father and role model to his two sons, Brian and Charlie, through which he gained the daughters he had always wanted, Sarah and Brianna. Loving son-in-law to Geraldine Wagner, son-in-law to the late Jerome Wagner, and loved brother-in-law to all their children. Jim was a treasured uncle to many nieces and nephews, and a great uncle to several of their young ones. Jim entered the work force as a cookie delivery driver for Maurice Lennel until leaving to begin a professional career at Fermilab in Batavia, IL. He spent the following

39 years working with a number of close friends towards a position in operations. In his free time, Jim loved to sit outside feeding and watching the birds, working in the Rife family garden, woodworking and making pens, and riding his motorcycle with his friends, most importantly his son Charlie. He loved weekend trips with Nancy, always searching for the perfect selfie and funny pun to go with them. His best time was spent spoiling and laughing with his grandson Jimmy. Due to recent unfortunate health circumstances in the world, all services have been mandated to remain private. The arrangements have been entrusted to Overman-Jones Funeral Home, 1519 S. Additionally, our paramedics may be wearing extra personal protective equipment. This is to protect not only first responders, but to protect families as well. Until further notice, they will not allow family members to ride to the hospital in the ambulance. PFPD personnel will be practicing social distancing so don’t be offended if they keep their distance from anyone but the patient.

Because of the potential for the virus that causes COVID-19 to live on surfaces, we are currently discouraging the use of Plainfield Park District playground equipment.

Trails, parks, and other open space amenities can still be enjoyed providing that residents don’t congregate in large groups and maintain proper social distance. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), currently recommends maintaining a distance of about 10 feet. The Plainfield Park District Board of Commissioners fully supports this

decision for the health and well-being of our program participants, the community at large, and our dedicated staff. Please see our website, plfdparks. org, under the News tab for updates and previous announcements about COVID-19. Updates will also be posted to our social media channels. We apologize for any inconvenience.
