The Plainfield Park District will start closing out the summer season this weekend with a boat race and party. On Friday, the district will host the Cardboard Boat Regatta at the Ottawa Street pool, 23820 W. Ottawa St. From 6:30 to 8 p.m., residents can test the buoyancy of crafts they’ve built from cardboard and duct tape by paddling them across the pool. There is a $5 cost per team. Boats are expected to hold one or two people. The district provides cardboard and two rolls of duct tape for each boat. Awards will be given for the fastest boat, the best design and the most team spirit. On Saturday, admission to the Ottawa Street Pool and the Prairie Activity and Recreation Center (PARC), 24550 W. Renwick Road, are free all day. The Recreation Center will hold fitness classes at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Party at the PARC will be from 2 to 6 p.m. beginning with a performance by the band Industrial Drive. The free family event includes crafts and face-painting. There will also be a magic show at 4:30 p.m. Concessions will be available.
