PROPOSED TOBACCO LICENSE PROMPTED BY INCREASED SALES TO MINORS By Jonathan Samples Staff Reporter
Tobacco retailers in Joliet may have to acquire a license to continue selling their product if a city council proposal succeeds. Mayor Tom Giarrante said the move would help the city deter retailers who habitually disregard laws concerning the sale of tobacco to minors. “The way it works now is if someone sells to minors they get fined, but we have no recourse to the owner of the establishment,” Giarrante said.“With the license, if that happens the owner would have to address that employee, and if it continually happens we can pull their license to sell tobacco.” He said that a survey conducted by the mayor’s staff See TOBACCO, page 23
