BRIDGE CLOSED
IDOT begins work on Ruby Street Bridge By Jonathan Samples Staff Reporter
The Illinois Department of Transportation began a $2.12 million maintenance project on the Ruby Street Bridge in Joliet Monday. The bridge will be closed while repairs are taking place, and IDOT officials estimate the project will be completed by Nov. 19. “The Ruby Street Bridge is currently under bridge repair and painting,” IDOT spokesperson Josh Kaufmann said. Additional repairs to the bridge include: painting, scour repair, bridge tender house rehabilitation, timber
sidewalk removal and replacement, and handrail repair. Commuters traveling on Route 53 use the Ruby Street Bridge to enter and exit downtown Joliet on the city’s north side. The route is a major thoroughfare for commuters crossing the Des Plaines River and delays should be expected. Southbound Route 53 traffic will be detoured west on Theodore Street to Route 30, south on Route 30 to Jefferson Street and east on Jefferson Street to Ottawa Street (Route 53). Northbound Route 53 traffic will be detoured west on Cass Street to See BRIDGE, page 2
