Tensions between mayor, police heat up

Tensions between the mayor and police officials in Joliet have openly escalated into investigations and ac-

cusations of misconduct and political shenanigans.

The latest issues stem from the conduct of both Mayor Bob O’DeKirk and Joliet Police Sgt. Lindsey Heavener at the Mexican Independence Day Parade on Sept. 14.

A confidential police memo that was leaked to the media said O’DeKirk accused Heavener of being drunk while on duty at the parade and brought his concerns to Chief Al Roechner.

O’DeKirk said he was told about Heavener’s condition by others and made his own observations, but did not speak with the sergeant.

Mayor Bob O’DeKirk Roechner eventually took Heavener to the hospital where voluntary blood tests reportedly showed no drugs or alcohol in his system.

Heavener is reportedly considering filing a civil suit against the city and the mayor. Heavener referred questions to his attorney’s office.

Meanwhile, Roechner is also the subject of a city investigation.

with highest interest rate first is the best approach.

This may seem to make sense mathematically, but I realized a long time ago debt is not a mathematics problem—it’s a behavior problem.

Personal finance is 80 percent behavior, and only 20 percent head knowledge. Besides, if all those people were so great at math, they wouldn’t be up to their eyeballs in debt in the first place!

The reason the debt snowball pays off debt from smallest to largest is that modifying your behavior and providing inspiration to get out of debt is more important than the math.

Troy Golf teams make State WCWC releases October Three members of the Troy Boys’ Golf Team and one member of the Troy Girls’ Golf Team competed at the IESA Golf State Finals held at the Kellogg Golf Course in Peoria this season, all placing well in the competition.

Eighth grade Troy Middle School boys Carson Trax placed 22nd, Lincoln Chizmark placed 26th, and Parker Sloan placed 41st. On the girls’ team, seventh-grader Nina Mayfield placed 40th.

Carson also played in the state competition in 2016, and Lincoln and Parker also played in the 2018 competition.

Coaches are Adam DeGroot and Scott Kaciuba.

“We had our highest number

ever try out for the Troy Golf Team this year,” DeGroot said. “It shows the excitement for golf is growing in the community. We are definitely looking forward to where we can take the program in the next few years.”

DeGroot described this year’s eighth grade class, in particular, as “dynamite,” and said he was sorry to be losing them.

“It’s a special group we had,” he added.

“Each of our three eighth grade male athletes have competed at the state level on multiple occasions,” Kaciuba said. “This year, each one finished their 18-hole round shooting in the 80s. This was Nina’s first time

down at state, having only played the sport for two years. In her best round, she shot her personal best.”

Kaciuba added that throughout the season, the team continually exhibited good sportsmanship on the course and at practice.

Troy Director of Athletics Meagan DeGroot said that although the team will miss the eighth graders, who have been good leaders, she is looking forward to the next classes coming in and moving the team forward.

“The Troy Golf Team has been a big community sport over the years,” she said. “We have a lot of parents who have helped us, and we also greatly appreciate our partners at the Inwood Golf Course.”

Entering Friday night’s crucial Southwest Prairie West match-up, Minooka was ranked No. 7, in the Associated Press Class 8A state rankings, while Plainfield North, were looking to bounce back, from a heartbreaking, 14-13 SPC West loss No. 8- Oswego last week.

Led by senior quarterback, Seth Lehr (11-for-14, 193 yards, TD; 82 yards rushing), Minooka (6-0, 2-0) posted scoring drives of 88, 81, 74, 80 and 68 yards to for a 34-0 victory and spoil Homecoming 2019 for Plainfield North (4-2, 0-2).

The Tigers received the opening kickoff, took almost half of the first quarter and faced a fourth and three at the Minooka 15-yard line.

In the words of the late Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra, for the Tigers, it was “de’ja’ vu all over again.”

Late in the first half of last week’s loss at Oswego, Tiger running back Nate Simpson, fell short by one inch on a fourth and four play at the Oswego 46.

After stopping the Tigers’ on downs, Oswego marched 54 yards and scored the only touchdown of the first-half.

Against Minooka, Marcellus Moore (six carries, 47 yards; 3 catches, 37 yards), was stopped one inch shy of the crucial first down.

After the key stop on Moore at the 12, the Indians marched 88 yards on 13 plays and senior Noah Ellens (18 carries, 76 yards), scored the first touchdown of the night, crashing in from the two-yard line. A bad snap led

to an Indian PAT failure, for a 6-0 lead.

Minooka junior quarterback Josh Davis’ 30-yard run down to the Tiger 10 yard-line, replacing Lehr, for one play, was the highlight of the scoring drive.

Scoring drives of 81-yards on just five plays and 74-yards on eight plays, in the second quarter, gave the Indians a 20-0 lead at halftime.

Lehr’s 54-yard pass to senior Connor Etzkorn (7 carries, 33 yards TD, one catch, 54 yards) set up Jake Kellams 3-yard scoring run, with 8:37 left in the half.

Lehr hooked up with Etzkorn for a 34-yard reception, which highlighted the Indians 74-yard scoring drive, right before halftime. Etzkorn, on the eighth play of the drive, would rumble in from the five and junior place-kicker Mason Spivey’s PAT, made it 20-0 Indians at the half.

“We really played well tonight,” Etzkorn said. “Our offensive line was outstanding and the defense did their job.”

The Indians leading pass receiver, Trent Hudak (six catches, 119 yards, TD), caught three Lehr passes for 61 yards of the Indians’, 8-play, 80-yard scoring drive to open the second half.

Lehr’s picture-perfect 27-yard scoring strike to Hudak made it 27-0 Indians with 9:26 left in the third quarter.

“Seth is the best,” Hudak said. “His 27-yard touchdown pass to me was pure perfection.”

“Trent is the best,” Lehr said. “All I have to do is just get the ball near him

and Trent will go get it. We played great tonight. My offensive line made the offensive go. Our defense was outstanding and our special teams were outstanding as well.”

With 10:20 left in the game, Indian junior Jake Wingerter (three carries, 29 yards, TD), scored from three yards out to conclude a 68-yard, 10 play, Minooka scoring drive.

Chris Carpenter, Jake Shipla, Dylan Meyer, Ryan Doody, Mike Susnar and TE Mike Zito led the way for 257 Indian rushing yards. With Lehr’s 191 passing yards, 468 total yards of offense were posted by the undefeated and state-

ranked Indians.

Kellams, Wingerter, Steven Gonzales, Zach Grayson, Mason Cave, Tommy Burrs, Ernesto Ramirez, Sam Beck, Drew Gutknecht and Nick Schultz, completed the shutout of the explosive Tiger offense.

Ramirez picked up another interception and Indian DE Kellams had a big quarterback sack.

“We were really concerned about their outstanding speed and went out tonight, to not allow any explosive plays, “Minooka coach John Belskis said. “Zero explosive plays. We played great tonight, in all three-areas.

“I felt that our stop of Plainfield North on their first drive of the game, was key tonight. If they would have scored on that drive, it could have been a different game. Football is truly a game of inches.”

For the Tigers, senior quarterback Adam Smith, completed seven of his 13 passes for 79 yards. Simpson would rush for 49 yards on 10 carries.

Cooper Bridges (two catches, 21 yards), Tobenna Enyi (two catches, 21 yards) and Simpson (one catch, 20 yards), led the way for the Tigers, with pass receptions, Friday night.

In a game that was a tale of two halves, Bolingbrook came out on top 29-14 over Lockport.

The Porters (2-4,2-2), who are led by first year head coach George Czart, received the ball first in the game and exploded out of the gate with a 40-yard rush by senior running back Colin Schmutzler (33 rushes, 127 yards) that set up a six-yard rushing touchdown by Schmutzler to put the Porters up 7-0 in the first quarter.

On the Porters second drive of the game, backup quarterback junior Riley Pfeiffer extended the Porters lead to 14-0 with a 15-yard rushing touchdown.

Pfeiffer is filling in for injured senior Marcos Voulgaris, who was hurt in the second game of the year With 2 minutes, 20 left in the first quarter, the Raiders showed some life.

On just his second rush of the evening, sophomore running back Jaquan Howard broke free from 61-yards out to cut the Porters lead to just seven points.

For the game, Howard carried the ball 16 times for 200 yards.

A standstill second quarter for both teams with many defensive stops put the Porters up 14-7 at the half.

“This is the first team that’s really lined up and come right at us, right at our heart,” said Bolingbrook coach John Ivlow, “We’ve not had that before.”

In the second half, a completely different Raider team showed up on the field.

by Howard and a two-point conversion put Bolingbrook up 15-14 with 9:30 left in the third quarter.

On the following drive, a 30yard bubble screen touchdown pass and catch from senior quarterback Devyn Suggs to senior receiver Antonio King extended the Raiders’ lead 23-14.

“Suggs just made a great throw

and I made a couple people miss and the rest is history,” King said.

“We didn’t play Bolingbrook football in the first half, we got reenergized and came out firing in the second half.”

Bolingbrook took a 23-14 lead into the fourth quarter and the offense didn’t stop there.

A nine-yard touchdown run by Howard, his third touchdown of the game, put the Raiders up 29-14 and the game out of reach for the Porters late in the contest.

“We made some necessary adjustments on defense,” Ivlow said.

“Offensively we had like two possessions in the first half, we had some finesse and then got more into our power game and that’s when I thought we really started clicking then.”

For Czart, he said he knows how close his team was to knocking off one of the better teams in the state and his team is going in the right direction, but a win is much more important than a close, hardfought battle.

“We just didn’t sustain anything offensively really in the second half like we did especially - in the first quarter,” Czart said. “We fought hard but it wasn’t enough, give credit to [Ivlow] and their players, they are a very good football team.”
