Suspects identified and arrested for Coronavirus stunt at local store after surveillance images were distributed, wallace was identified and turned himself into police by brian stanley bugle staff

T
wo teens allegedly used a worldwide health crisis to scare customers and employees and damage more than $7,000 in merchandise Feb. 2 at a
Joliet Walmart. Shortly after 4 p.m. Tyler D. Wallace, 19, and a 17-year-old boy entered the store at 1401 Route 59 and Wallace put on a yellow medical mask, according to police reports. “The masked suspect also had a handmade sign on his back that stated ‘Caution I have the Coronavirus,’” Sgt. Chris Botzum said in a statement. Wallace then allegedly took an aerosol can and walked through the store spraying produce, clothing and beauty products. The suspects
then fled in a white GMC Yukon. Walmart told police $7,300 in product was ruined and cleanup would cost $2,400. After surveillance images were distributed, Wallace was identified and turned himself into police Feb. 6. Wallace, of Joliet, has been charged with disorderly conduct, criminal trespassing and retail theft. The Will County State’s Attorney’s office said Wallace’s accomplice has also been identified and faces similar charges in the juvenile justice system.

social media threat forces shorewood police to use extra patrol extra manpower was deployed to every school in the village and other sites where children gather in the morning by brian stanley

S
horewood Police used extra patrols Feb. 5 when a terrorist-like threat was posted on social media. Chief Aaron Klima said the “vague and unspecified threat to create a mass-casualty incident in Shorewood, Illinois” popped up in the early morning hours on an anonymous site and was later reposted on Twitter. Klima said surveillance software used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the threat and the agen-
cy notified the Shorewood police. “Due to the lack of specific information or intentions of the poster, the Shorewood Police Department decided to act with an abundance of caution,” Klima said. Extra manpower was deployed to every school in the village and other sites where children gather in the morning, Klima said. “School personnel were engaged to ensure all established normal security measures were in place and to be extra vigilant for any suspicious behavior,” Klima said. “(We) reached out to nearby law enforcement partners as well as the school district administrations to ensure the safety of everyone. Local and federal law enforcement did not identify any suspect, but said Feb. 6 the initial investigation determined the threat was not credible. Klima said the investigation will continue.

large ruts create potential hazard along wauponsee glacial trail Forest preserve district is working to resolve the issue
Path users should proceed with caution along a portion of the Wauponsee Glacial Trail just south of Laraway Road in Joliet, where two large ruts or bumps were inadvertently created during contractual work taking place in the area. The potential hazard is about fourtenths of a mile south of Laraway Road. Contractors driving across
the trail to perform tasks on the ComEd high power lines at that location created two large ruts or bumps in the crushed limestone trail. After the damage to the trail was discovered by Forest Preserve staff, warning signs were erected to let trail users know about the bumps as they approach from the north or south. The Forest Preserve District is working to resolve the issue. However, winter conditions may delay the work.

Angels earn repeat state trophy Jca places third at ihsa dance competition by ryan ostry bugle staff
@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com
The Joliet Catholic Academy varsity girls dance team received a thirdplace finish in their quest to repeat as IHSA Class 1A state champions at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloominton, IL. The competition began on Jan. 31 in the preliminary round and scores were determined in Saturday’s final round on Feb.1. To honor the Angels, an all-school assembly took place on Feb. 4 to showcase the dancers talent and hard work that came to fruition once again. As a coaching staff, this was the Angels first year with head coach Kelsey Kempes and assistants Kristina Sak and Carley Serena. “Our season is a year around sport that really never stops,” Sak said. “From football season, to our competitive tryout after football season and then we had about three weeks to get our routine and costume together with this team here.” The girls first competition of the year was at the Wheaton North High School Invitational where the Angels outscored the second-place finisher by 7.92 points. “That is really hard to do because usually a win is by a single point or less,” Sak said. “For the girls to win by that much is extremely impressive.” The girls followed that performance up by going to the Minooka Invitational where they took first place, and then they followed that up with a third place finish at the Morris Invitational and then they moved on to claim the 2020 Sectional Championship where they earned first place with a score of 93.78. The 93.78 score was the second highest score among the state’s five
sectional sites feeding into the state finals. After sectionals, the Angels took their talents to state which was just a week after, and during the semifinals, the Angels scored a 95.82 that broke the all-time 1A State Championship score. “That was pretty incredible,” Sak said. “Teams were really looking at our team a lot because they thought if they made it to the finals, then they would go against us.” During the finals, the Angels scored a 96.16 out of 100 which solidified their third-place finish. The first-place team was Centralia
High School and the second-place finisher was Morris High School. “It was a great effort all around,” Sak said. “We couldn’t be prouder of our girls efforts.” The Angels were led this past season by their three captains and five seniors who were all a part of the first-place state finish last year. “This year I think we worked a lot harder and improved significantly over last year,” said captain Erica Passo. “I think our routine this year was a lot more difficult than last years, but collectively, even though we didn’t get first, I think we improved a lot more.”
One variable that the Angels didn’t have as much of last year was the amount of Freshman added to the roster. This year, five new freshmen were a part of the team, and one captain said they grew up quickly when the team depended on them at a crucial time. “We got a lot more talent added to this team with the five amazing freshmen that were with us,” said Captain Mallory Paolucci. “They added a great quality of technique to this team, and even know understandably they were kind of nervous at the big stage, they really stepped
up when our team needed them to and they delivered in a great way.” Sak, to go along with Paolucci, also added that because of the five newcomers this year, the future of JCA dance is looking up as the sky is the limit. “The five freshmen that came in are supremely talented and they have all learned so much from the upper classmen this year,” Sak said. “Even at state, they said that this team danced like a college team including the freshmen which was a huge honor, so even though we will really miss all of our seniors, the future is looking bright for us.”

Tighten up spending to pay off debt you guys need to get on a written, detailed plan, and start hitting your goals dear dave, I’m beginning to think we got in over our heads with our house. My wife and I make about $125,000 a year combined, but we’ve never been able to put anything aside for an emergency fund. Our mortgage payment is 35 percent of our take home pay each month. We have two young children, so we eat out a lot, but we have no debt other than our house. Do you think we should refinance our home?
dear Jeff,
Jeff
You two are making good money,
and you’re debt-free except for your home. You can’t tighten up your budget enough to save up an emergency fund? Stay out of restaurants, dude! There’s no law stating you have to eat out a lot just because there are kids in the house. I mean, you’ve got no emergency fund. That’s a pretty basic thing. You guys need to get on a written, detailed plan, and start hitting your goals. I’m talking about a strict, monthly budget. Now, I’ll admit your mortgage payment isn’t exactly what I would’ve signed you up for. Your house payments, or rent, should be no more than 25 percent of your monthly take home pay. But your house payment isn’t what’s holding you two back. What’s holding you two back is the fact that you haven’t been willing
at ways to increase your income and selling stuff you don’t need to build an emergency fund. You two have been smarter than some, but you’re really going to have to buckle down and rearrange your priorities to make this happen!

I have around $15,000 in a Roth IRA. I just recently started studying your advice, and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to cash it out and put the money toward debt.
dear sarah, to tighten up the finances in other areas of your life to offset biting off more than you could chew in terms of a home. No, I wouldn’t refinance. You’re fairly close where the mortgage payments are concerned, so I think you can make it through this by looking

I teach people to stop investing temporarily while they attack their debt. So, I wouldn’t add anything to it at this point, but the worst thing you could do is cash it out. If you do, taxes and penalties will steal a huge chunk of that cash. The only time I take money out of a retirement account to
pay off debt is to avoid bankruptcy or foreclosure. Start working the Baby Steps from the beginning. Baby Step 1 is saving up $1,000 for a starter emergency fund. Baby Step 2 is paying off all debts from smallest to largest, except for your home, using the debt snowball method. This will free up a ton of money! Then you’re ready for Baby Step 3, which is increasing your beginner emergency fund to a fullyloaded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. Now you’re ready for Baby Step 4, which is 15 percent of your income going into retirement!

ashington, DC – On Feb. 5, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Senate’s final votes on the Articles of Impeachment against President Donald J. Trump: “With this vote, the complicity of congressional Republicans in President Trump’s corruption, abuse of power, and undermining of our Constitution is complete.
Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans placed protecting the President above their duty to uphold the Constitution and to do impartial justice. “The House of Representatives was right to impeach President Trump and hold him accountable for his actions. There can be no true acquittal without a trial, and there cannot be a trial without witnesses and evidence.

From our attendees and sponsors to our chairpersons and caritas committee, we are extremely thankful to everyone who supported this year s caritas with their time, talent, and treasure. For the seventh year in a row, the event raised over a quarter million dollars in scholarship funds that will go on to help make a usF education possible for so many students. dents. In fact, the event has raised over $2 million in scholarship support in just seven years and over $5 million in its history! This is a wonderful affirmation of support for the University of St. Francis’ mission from the communities we serve,” Johnson said. Kristin Short, USF Vice President for Advancement, was also extremely pleased with the event.
“More than 400 guests attended. We so appreciate the support from the community. The evening was extra special because we celebrated 100 years of providing a Catholic, Franciscan education. We celebrated our rich history, our founding sisters and all members of the USF community. Seeing our beautiful campus and all the students, community leaders, alumni, faculty, and staff come together in support of USF was truly inspiring,” she said. The gala, which took place in USF’s Pat Sullivan Center, featured cuisine by Jewell Events Catering and included a wide variety of live and silent auction items, while guests enjoyed the music of the USF Jazz Ensemble and the Gentlemen of Leisure Band. The University of St. Francis, in Joliet, Ill., serves over 4,000 students nationwide, offering undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in the arts and sciences, business, education, nursing and social work.
