One of Niles’ centenarians, Pearl Weaver, was born Jan 10, 1918 in Chicago, just celebrated her 101th birthday. She spent her youth in Chicago across the street from St. Mary of the Angels church, watching it being built. In the 1920s Pearl remembers her aunts dressed as flappers. She attended school there and experienced the great depression as a young girl. Entertainment at that time included going to the rollerskating rink and to the moves, both of which she which she enjoyed. Pearl has seen many developments over her lifetime, including talking pictures, automobiles, television and other modern appliances. As a young adult she was an artist, and she painted flowers on furniture. She was a wonderful seamstress and made wedding gowns and men’s coats. She crocheted, knitted and loved to cook. She married her husband Casmir (Casey) Weaver in 1940. She raised three children, Robert, Daniel and Marilyn. The family moved to Niles in 1957 and Pearl still resides in the same house. For a time she worked at a manufacturing company on Howard St. Pearl has been fortunate to have traveled around the world, visiting New Zealand, 10 European countries, Mexico and Canada. Her memory is sharp and she loves to talk about her experiences and it is a joy to listen to her stories.
