lockport’s czako has the world at his feet By Randy Whalen for the Bugle
Living the dream — When it comes to high school sports, Lockport Township’s Gabe Czako certainly is. The senior had the experience of a lifetime this fall. He’s been an intricate part of not one but two of the most successful sports teams in Lockport history. Czako is a top defender and one of the captains on the Porter soccer team (20-2), which brought home the first state trophy in program history this past weekend when they placed third with a 2-1 win over Morton in Class 3A at Hoffman Estates High School. Czako had an assist on the Porter’s first goal of the game. He’s also the placekicker for the football team, which is in the Class 8A quarterfinals this coming Saturday at 1 PM at Glenbard North. The Porters are 10-1 on the season. This is the fourth time in school history that a Lockport football team has reached the quarterfinals. “Right now I sometimes don’t realize how crazy and amazing this is,” Czako said back in midOctober. “But if I take a step back I realize that it’s a once in a lifetime experience. “It’s just amazing, it’s such a gift. It’s just great to be part of both teams.” The thing is, neither one of these are his best sport. Czako placed second in the state in Class 3A this past spring in both the 110-meter hurdles (14.1 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (38.42 seconds) for the Lockport track and field team. Senior Kalil Johnson from Evanston Township won both events (:14.01 in the 110 and :38.08 in the 300). So since Johnson has graduated, Czako is the favorite this season in both hurdle events. When asked which was his favorite sport, Czako was diplomatic. “Do I have to answer that,” he said. “Let’s just say I’m pursuing track and field in college. I love all my sports but do the best in track and field. “I’ve been playing soccer the longest. I don’t remember exactly when I started but I was young. It’s going to be sad to not play it in
college. I didn’t start playing football until sophomore year. I first ran track when I was in sixth grade at Oak Prairie but didn’t try doing hurdles until seventh grade.” While Czako has played soccer the longest, his name doesn’t show up often in the statistics. He had four goals and four assists for the Porters this season. But his presence and speed on defense make him one of the top players on the team. “You can’t put into words how important Gabe is in the back for us,” said Lockport boys soccer coach Chris Beal, of one of his three captains. “He leads by example on the field. It’s his leadership, his calm presence, his ability to win every header, and his ability to pass the ball out of the back that makes him a special player.” Also his ability to bounce back from adversity. Take the Porters Oct. 8 football game at Bolingbrook. Czako missed the potential game-winning field goal, a 37yard attempt with 11.1 seconds left in regulation. The game went into overtime tied 7-7, and the Raiders scored on their opening drive of OT. They, however, missed the extra point. After senior Ty Schultz scored on from 10-yards out on the Porter’s first play of overtime, Czako calmly kicked the extra point to give them a 14-13 victory. “The emotions were all over the place,” Czako said of the sequence that led to the winning kick. “It came down to me at the end and I admit, I was pretty nervous. I had missed the field goal opportunity but my teammates picked me up and on the second opportunity, I made it. That was such an amazing feeling, winning it for the team. Even afterward, all the emotions were still in my head.” Then in a 3-2 win over Bloom Township on Oct. 27 in a Romeoville Soccer Sectional semifinal, Czako had an opportunity to convert a penalty kick and give the Porters a 2-0 second-half lead. He missed. But, with the game tied 2-2 after overtime and in penalty kicks, he was entrusted to take the third of the PKs and converted as Lockport outscored the Blazing Trojans 4-2

Library Veterans Day event resumes after hiatus On Friday, November 5, 2021, the Niles-Maine District Library resumed its Annual Veterans Celebration in person and via Zoom after a one-year hiatus due to the Pandemic. Today’s celebration was the 14th. Approximately 40 people attended in person which included 16 local veterans and their guests. The local veterans included participants in the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project, members of the Niles Memorial VFW Post 3579, and the local American Legion. “While we no longer collect their stories, we do hold the personal accounts of these American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better un-
derstand the realities of war,” said Executive Director, Cyndi Rademacher, in her opening remarks. Kevin Morrison from VFW Post 3579 made comments about the various veteran support organizations and held a moment of silence for veterans who passed since 2019. The celebration included a performance by Sweet Reminder as the Andrews Sisters, who entertained the crowd with a tribute to the music that once uplifted and unified a nation. Guests were then given boxed lunches in partnership with Kappy’s American Grill and time to visit with the American Legion, VFW, Honor Flight Chicago, Maine Township’s Mainestreamers,
and the Village of Niles Senior Center. We invite the community to celebrate our local veterans by visiting the Veterans History Project Corner on the Third Floor of the Library. Read the transcripts of more than 60 interviews from local veterans. Partnering with the Library of Congress since 2005, the Veterans History Project aims to educate the community by recognizing the contributions of area veterans. These primary documents provide individual accounts of service memoirs during World War II, the Korean War and aftermath, and the Vietnam War. You can also read or listen to these memories online at www.nileslibrary. org/veterans-history-project.

Street dedicated in honor of Morton Grove resident Christina Curtis Christina Curtis was many things to many Morton Grove residents. Christina lived on the 7000 block of Church Street for 20 years with her family. She attended Hynes Elementary School as well as Golf Middle School where she excelled in academics and was recognized as valedictorian of her class. She attended Niles North High School and eventually earned a scholarship to Marquette University in Milwaukee. Christina also had a passion for dance. She began dance lessons when she was 5 years old. Her love of the art was apparent as she shared her gift by eventually teaching beginning dance into early adulthood. She is remembered by her students, teachers, neighbors, friends, and most importantly her family as a warm, bright, friendly person who found time for everyone she met. Christina passed away on July
21st, 2020 at the age of 23. Recognizing Christina’s impact on her neighborhood, her schools and the people she touched in her community, Ms. Norine Nagel petitioned the Village to install honorary street signs in the 7000 block of Church St. At the September 13, 2021 Village Board meeting, the Village Board of Morton Grove took action to approve “Honorary Signage” for the 7000 block of Church Street as “Christina Court”. Mayor Dan DiMaria said that, “Christina personified the values of our community. Her dedication to excellence, unrelenting passions and her love of family, students and neighbors drew her closer to everyone she interacted with. She was truly Incredibly Close, and Amazingly Open. We are proud to honor her legacy.”

With his long hair and good nature, Czako even admits that “people have called me an antelope because they say I look like one when I run.” But when it comes to his performance, he’s always working to get better. He would attend both football and soccer practice on the same day, going to football before or after to work on his kicking. He’s also sought out a pretty famous kicker/track athlete from Lockport in Nick Setta. The 1999 Lockport graduate who was part of two Class AA state title cross country teams as a sophomore and a junior, and was also a 6-time track & field state medalist, including winning the 800-meter run as a senior. Setta also kicked at Notre Dame and professionally in the Canadian Football League.
“Yes, I have and I’ve learned a lot from him,” Czako said of Setta. “He’s very knowledgeable about kicking. When I was starting out I went to his training and he used to play soccer too so he knows what I’m going through and the difference between kicking a soccer ball and a football. He was a really good athlete.” Czako, who says he “plans to study engineering but that could change.” has not committed to a college yet. He, however, has certainly visited some elite name ones in Cornell, Duke, and Princeton. But his immediate goal is to help the football team continue to advance this Saturday. “We can’t wait to congratulate Gabe,” Lockport football coach George Czart said after the Porter football team won 34-0 over Glenbard West in a second-round playoff game at the same time Czako was helping the soccer team place third in the state. “We want him to rub some of that state magic on us.”

Bond Set at $450,000 for second Chicago man charged with attempting to carjack a woman at gunpoint in Downers Grove DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Downers Grove Chief of Police Shanon Gillette announced today that bond has been set for the second of two Chicago men accused of attempting to carjack a woman’s car from a Downers Grove gas station and robbing her of her cell phone. Pierre Baugh, 23 (d.o.b. 3/31/1998) of the 7000 block of S. Dante Avenue, appeared at a bond hearing this morning where Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $450,000 with 10% to apply. Baugh has been charged with one count of Attempt Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking With a Firearm (Class 1 Felony) and one count of Armed Robbery with a Firearm (Class X Felony). Baugh’s co-defendant, Demario Butler, 30 (d.o.b. 4/8/1991) of the 4300 block of W. Maypole, Chicago is facing the same charges. On October 25, 2021, Butler appeared in Bond Court where bond was set at $500,000 with 10 percent to apply. On September 30, 2021, at approximately 1:19 p.m., officers with the Downers Grove Police Department were dispatched to the BP gas station located at 4314 Main Street, Downers Grove, for a call of an armed robbery and attempted vehicular hijacking that had just occurred. Upon their arrival, officers spoke to the victim and
several other witnesses at the gas station. It is alleged that the victim was at the gas station when two people approached her, Butler on the driver’s side of the vehicle and Baugh on the passenger side of the vehicle. It is alleged that Butler was holding a black handgun next to his face with the barrel pointed upward and demanded the victim’s car keys and cell phone. It is further alleged that the victim handed over her cell phone to Butler and then ran toward the store. It is alleged that Butler then entered the victim’s vehicle and Baugh pulled on the door handle of the passenger side of the vehicle. It is further alleged that Butler was unable to start the car and exited the vehicle. It is alleged that after Butler exited the vehicle, the two men fled the scene. Butler was taken into custody on October 22, 2021, when authorities conducted a search warrant at his home. Baugh was taken into custody on November 2 from his home in Chicago. “The apprehension of these two defendants sends the message that this type of random violent crime, that terrorizes our citizens and destroys communities, will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be aggressively prosecuted,” Berlin said. “We are all thankful that the victim in this case was not physically harmed. I thank the
Downers Grove and Chicago Police Departments and DuPage MERIT for their outstanding work on this case. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Kristin Sullivan, Alyssa Rabulinski and Jessica Sisler for their efforts in securing charges against these two men.” “I would like to thank the Downers Grove Police Department investigators for their hard work and determination to follow every available lead in this case” Gillette said. “Their persistence and exceptional performance has made this outcome possible. I would also like to thank State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his office for their continued support and guidance.” Baugh’s next court appearance is scheduled for December 1, 2021, for arraignment. Butler’s next court appearance is scheduled for November 22, 2021, for arraignment. Both men will appear in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.
