The Romeoville HS Class of 2024 made their first official visit to their new academic home starting next August. Incoming Freshman Night gives students and their parents a chance to get familiar with the school and learn about everything RHS has to offer to students. RHS Principal Mr. Derek Kinder welcomed next year’s freshmen and their parents, and gave them some wise advice that will serve well for any current 8th grader. lukancic honors student torch of excellence winners The Lukancic Middle School staff was recently asked to nominate students for the Lukancic “Torch of Excellence Awards”. The criteria for nominations were students who demonstrate academic excellence, academic growth, or outstanding leadership. The nominees gathered on Wed. Jan. 15 to share breakfast with their families in the gym. Lukancic 7th grader Max Venegas is an outstanding representative of the students given the Torch of Excellence. were interested in going home. The two students went a total of 63 rounds, 47 rounds headto-head, before a winner finally emerged at the Brooks Middle School Spelling Bee. a reminder about winter weather Cancellation or delay of school day Now that winter is upon us, this is a reminder of how VVSD informs parents and guardians of a weather-related cancellation or delayed start of a school day. If the school day is going to be cancelled or delayed, parents and guardians will receive a phone call by 6 a.m. In consideration of parent work schedules and the need for childcare arrangements, VVSD will try to make the decision and inform the community earlier whenever possible. If the decision is made to delay the start of the school day, the school day will start two hours later than scheduled for grades K-12 with regular transportation/ car rider/walker routines in place. STEP will begin at 9 a.m. and all Early Childhood classes will be cancelled on a delayed start day. Communication regarding before/after care or other activities will be provided when necessary. In addition to the phone call, information about school closings or delayed starts will be sent via email, posted on the District website vvsd.org, Facebook and Twitter feeds, and shared with the area newspapers, and television and radio stations. Parents and guardians are encouraged to log into their Infinite Campus parent accounts to be certain their phone contact and email information is up-to-date.

Home prices jump 9% in last year romeoville continues to develop community through projects like decorative street lighting, park improvements According to a January article on Crain’s Chicago Business, Romeoville experienced a 9% increase in home prices in 2019, one of the largest increases in the Will County and DuPage County communities that were detailed in the report. “This report confirms what

we’ve long believed in Romeoville: our community continues to be a desirable place to live,” explained Mayor John Noak. Romeoville continues to develop the community through projects like decorative street lighting, park improvements, and the addition of a Metra station. They also offer

incentive based opportunities like the Romeoville Reinvestment Program to encourage homeowners to improve their homes and properties. The hope is these efforts have a positive effect on home prices. Data is based on the sale prices of homes in each community. At least 25 homes in a community must have been sold in 2019 to be included in the report.

Library reveals new card design to celebrate 50th anniversary

Fountaindale Library in Bolingbrook is celebrating its 50th anniversary and because of that is giving a special gift to its patrons. In order to commemorate its 50th anniversary, Fountaindale has revealed three new library card designs. “We’ve made an effort to grow with our community which is why I think we’ve been successful for the past 50 years,” said Communications Manager Melissa Bradley. “Our goal as a staff is to just keep meeting the needs of our community.” The library district first opened in 1970 in a small classroom inside Park View School, which is now R.C. Hill Elementary School in Romeoville. In August 2008, the Romeoville building was transferred to the then Des Plaines Valley Library that is now White Oak Public Library District.

In 2009, the groundbreaking for the new Bolingbrook Library was held and the new library opened on March 7, 2011, and the old building was demolished. To celebrate the milestone, the public had to come to a conclusion about which library card was going to be utilized going forward, and the cards were designed by members of the community during last fall’s library card design contest. During the fall contest, more than 70 entries for new card designs were submitted, and the staff narrowed down the three best designs to choose from. The three categories that the designs fell into for choosing the new library card were from ages 12 and younger, ages 13 through 17 and then anyone 18 or older. After the three designs were narrowed down, they were then put online for public voting where one winner was chosen from each category. “We have about 36,000 people

Boe approves rachel kinder as next superintendent mrs. kinder will succeed dr. James a. mitchem, Jr. on July 1, 2020

he Valley View School District 365U Board of Education voted tonight to approve Mrs. Rachel Kinder, Ed.S as Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, 2020. Mrs. Kinder is currently VVSD’s Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services and will succeed current Superintendent Dr. James A. Mitchem, Jr. who will retire at the end of the current school year. She will be the district’s seventh superintendent and the first female superintendent in the school district’s history. “We are pleased to have found Dr. Mitchem’s successor within our organization,” said VVSD Board of Education President Mr. Steve

Quigley. “We will benefit from an easier transition of leadership.” Mrs. Kinder earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish Translation and Business from Northern Illinois University in 2001. She continued her education by earning her Master of Education Degree from the University of Illinois Chicago in 2004 and added a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from Governors State University in

library card design, they hosted a Winter Carnival that featured a performance and meet and greet with “Frozen” princesses Anna and Elsa. Also with the carnival, there was laser tag, a balloon sculpture live art show, live music and games and prizes. “The Winter Carnival was a huge success because we had more than 1,000 people in line to not just see the carnival, but see the new library card designs as well,” Bradley said. Other events that will take place this year because of the 50th anniversary will include a Maker Faire, Summer Adventure and a birthday themed Summer Adventure. The new library designed cards are free of charge for those who want to see the designs or obtain one. To get a new library card, someone must be resident of the library district and present two forms of ID that shows a current address. “It’s been so fun to see how everybody has their own favorite design,” Bradley said. “Each design represents something different in the library so I also think that’s why they have been so popular so far too.”

2008. Mrs. Kinder is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Education program at Concordia University Wisconsin. Mrs. Kinder began her teaching career in 2002 as a Spanish and English as a Second Language teacher in Joliet Township District 204 and then joined VVSD as a Spanish Teacher and Department Chair at Bolingbrook High School in 2007. In July 2009, she was named as Bolingbrook High School Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction and later Interim Principal. She was instrumental in planning and implementing school and instructional improvements annually for more than 3,700 students and nearly 400 staff members. Mrs. Kinder joined VVSD District Administration in 2011 as Assis-

Foster commends Salk Students Congressman Bill foster visits salk elementary to offer Congratulations

onas Salk Elementary School is having quite a year so far. First, they learned they are one of just 73 U.S. schools named a 2019 National ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act) Distinguished School for the extraordinary success of their students. Then they received a congratulatory visit from Illinois Congressman Bill Foster. Rep. Foster explained to students there are approximately 100,000 schools in the United States and only 73 received the ESEA designation. To put that in context, he asked the students to picture in their minds a big football stadium with 100,000 people inside, and then, picture the marching band on the field at halftime.

In Bolingbrook’s (16-6, 3-1), heartbreaking, 47-43, Southwest Suburban Blue showdown defeat at Homewood-Flossmoor (184, 4-0) the Lady Raiders, went to the free throw line 24 times in the game — connecting on only 12 of the attempts. Add to that, the nine missed layups and it was not too surprising the Raiders could not get out of Flossmoor with a victory over the Associated Press’ Illinois Class 4A No. 9-ranked Lady Vikings. The Lady Raiders entered the SWSC Blue showdown ranked No. 11 in the rankings. “Missed free-throws and missed bunnies have been our Achilles heel all season,” Bolingbrook coach Chris Smith said. “Homewood-Flossmoor is too good of a team for us to beat playing as we did tonight.” The Lady Raiders were led by LSU-bound senior Treasure

Thompson (11 points, five rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals). . The two SWSC-Blue powers battled to a 24-24 tie at halftime. Thompson scored nine of her points in the first half to lead Bolingbrook. H-F was led by 6-foot freshman Alyssa Latham (14 points, six rebounds) who scored half of the Lady Vikings points in the fist half. The crucial fourth quarter began with H-F up 35-30. Lady Raider sophomore Kennedi Perkins’ (10 points) old-fashioned three-point play brought the Raiders to within 35-33 in the first quarter. “We missed too many freethrows. We missed too many layups,” Perkins said. “H-F’s height did not affect us at all. We just missed the shots. That’s been a problem for us all season.” H-F opened up a 41-35 lead with 5:13 left. Men’s Volleyball defeats Charleston in straight sets Lewis University’s seventh ranked men’s volleyball team finished off a perfect weekend with a sweep of Charleston (W.V.) at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday evening. The Flyers improve to 5-3 while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-7. Lewis used a 7-2 run midway through the opening set to break open a close match as it went onto win 25-15. The Flyers hit .455 in the stanza and were led offensively by Kyle Bugée (Cupertino, Calif./Homestead) with four kills while Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) and Dalen Instenes (Racine, WI/William Horlick) added three kills each. The second set featured 12 ties and three lead changes. Lewis closed the set scoring eight of the final 13 points

to break a 17-all tie to win 25-22. Mitchem and Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) teamed up for nine of the team’s 12 kills in the stanza. The Flyers led for almost all of set three. They pulled away from Charleston with an 8-3 run to extend its lead to six points. The Golden Eagles wouldn’t get closer than five points the rest of the match as Lewis prevailed 25-15. The Flyers hit .368 (36 kills-8 errors-76 total attacks) and were led by Mitchem with 10 kills while Bugée added nine kills. Charleston had an attack percentage of .052 (26 kills-22 errors-77 total attacks) for the match. Jake Vorburger led the Golden Eagles with seven kills. Diego Villafane had 22 assists and

nine digs. Lewis heads to Fairfax, Va., next weekend for George Mason’s UValdo Acosta Invitational.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Lewis’ women’s basketball team had its eight-game winning streak snapped in a 71-60 loss to MissouriSt. Louis at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers fall to 12-6, 9-1 GLVC while the Tritons improve to 8-11, 3-7 GLVC. UMSL never trailed in the contest as they opened the game on a 9-0 run. Lewis cut the deficit to four at one point but were unable to get over the hump as the Tritons took a nine-point lead into the second quarter. The Flyers cut UMSL’s lead to three

points late in the second quarter but two free throws by Laura Szorenyi and a basket from Kiara Stewart gave the Tritons a seven-point cushion. Lewis had a chance to cut the lead to three again but missed 2-of-4 free throws in the final 0:15 of the half. UMSL held the Flyers scoreless for the first six-plus minutes of the second half to extend their halftime lead to 14 points. Lewis cut it to nine at one point but the Tritons closed out the quarter scoring five of the final seven points to head into the final frame with a 54-42 lead. UMSL couldn’t get much going offensively in the final quarter but neither could the Flyers as the margin remained in double digits. Lewis cut the lead to seven on a three-pointer from Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) with 0:38 left but the Tritons hit four free throws in the final 0:24 to secure the victory. The Flyers were held to under 40 percent shooting in the contest, was 8-of-23 from three and shot just 67 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded UMSL 36-34 but turned the ball over 17 times which the Tritons turned into 18 points. Hinders led Lewis with 18 points while Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./ Pius XI) added 15 and Alyssa Streeter (Chicago, Ill./Jones Prep) finished with 12 points.

Helicopter in crash that killed Kobe Bryant once owned by state of Illinois By Ben orner Capitol news

www.buglenewspapers.com The luxury helicopter that crashed Sunday morning in California, killing all nine people on board including former NBA star Kobe Bryant, was once owned by the state of Illinois. The Sikorsky S-76B helicopter was built in 1991, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s aircraft registry. The state of Illinois used it from 2007 to 2015, according to helicopter information database Helis. Under the direction of former Gov. Bruce Rauner, the state sold the helicopter along with four other surplus aircraft in 2015 for $2.5 million. Rauner said selling the aircraft “also avoided an additional $1 million in inspections and repairs,” according to an Associated Press story after the sales. The winning bid for the helicopter was $515,161, placed by user “Jimbagge1,” according to a listing on the state’s online auction website, iBid. Both the aircraft and its two engines had just under 4,000 hours of airframe time when the copter was sold. At the time of the crash, the registered owner of the helicopter was Island Express Holding Corp of Van Nuys, California, which registered it a month after it was won at auction. The state of Illinois previously attempted to sell the helicopter in 2014, but receive zero bids, according to that auction’s iBid listing.

A public information officer at the Illinois Department of Transportation, which maintains state aircraft, did not have any available information regarding the helicopter or its uses for the state. The copter’s information page on Helis, however, labels it as “VIP Governor.” A public information officer for

the governor’s office also did not have available information. A PIO for the Illinois Department of Central Management Services, which operates iBid, did not immediately respond to a request for more information. Sikorsky is a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, an American defense contractor.

Bryant, 41, played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1996 to 2016. He won five NBA championships, the Most Valuable Player award in 2008 and appeared in 18 all-star games. One of his four daughters, Gianna, 13, was also killed in Sunday’s crash. Bryant also leaves behind his wife of 18 years, Vanessa. Also killed in the crash were John

Altobelli, the head baseball coach at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California, his wife, Keri and their daughter Alyssa. Payton Chester, a 13-year-old basketball player, and her mother Sarah were also on board as well as Christina Mauser, a coach for the girls’ team. The pilot, Ara Zobayan, also died.

Bell tallies 11 points in Lewis’ loss to Missouri-St. Louis Lewis’ men’s basketball team ran into a hot shooting No. 18 MissouriSt. Louis lineup in its 77-63 loss at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday afternoon. Bryan A: If you’re debt-free and making decent money at your job, it shouldn’t take a whole year to set aside an emergency fund. Just make it a priority in your monthly budget. And yes, my advice to you is temporarily stop making contributions to your 401(k) until you have a fully funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. I recommend people stop investing, or wait to start investing, until they are debt-free except for their home and have a fully funded emergency fund in place. In some cases, depending on how much debt they have, it can take two or three years to do all this. I know that seems like a long time, but in the grand scheme of things it’s really not. If you don’t have an emergency fund, but you’re contributing to a
