C

onservation Park, located at 524 W. Belmont, was constructed in 2002 and is now 17 years old. Soon, one of the most used parks in Romeoville’s system will be re-developed and modernized. A new playground will be built, the shelter and fishing pavilion will be sanded and repainted, and there will be landscaping and path improvements. “It is important that we keep the facilities up to date and ensure the parks are accessible for everyone,” stated Mayor John Noak. Part of these improvements will be funded by the $382,800 OSLAD grant awarded to Lake Strini. Conservation Park is right next to the lake. Work at Conservation Park is expected to be completed by late Summer 2020. COURTESY OF THE VILLAGE OF ROMEOVILLE

tighten up spending to pay off debt dear dave, I’m beginning to think we got in over our heads with our house. My wife and I make about $125,000 a year combined, but we’ve never been able to put anything aside for an emergency fund. Our mortgage payment is 35 percent of our take home pay each month. We have two young children, so we eat out a lot, but we have no debt other than our house. Do you think we should refinance our home?

Jeff

dear Jeff, You two are making good money, and you’re debt-free except for your home. You can’t tighten up your budget enough to save up an emergency fund? Stay out of restaurants, dude! There’s no law stating you have to eat out a lot just because there are kids in the house. I mean, you’ve got no emergency fund. That’s a pretty basic thing. You guys need to get on a written, detailed plan, and start hitting your goals. I’m talking about a strict, monthly budget. Now, I’ll admit your mortgage payment isn’t exactly what I would’ve signed you up for. Your house payments, or rent, should be no

more than 25 percent of your monthly take home pay. But your house payment isn’t what’s holding you two back. What’s holding you two back is the fact that you haven’t been willing to tighten up the finances in other areas of your life to offset biting off more than you could chew in terms of a home.

armond Frazier coaching freshman daughter aaliyah on plainfield central girls varsity basketball team by mark gregory editorial director

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

Plainfield Central girls basketball coach Armond Frazier is admittedly normally not an overly sensitive guy. January 27 was one of those days where he was. That day, a California helicopter crash had killed nine people, three of them teenage girls basketball players and two coaches – most notably among the dead was former NBA superstar Kobe Bryant and his 13-yearold daughter Gianna. The flight was on its way to Bryant’s Mamba Academy, where the girls all played basketball for coach Bryant. The news of the crash affected Frazier – not just because of his love of basketball or because of Bryant’s status as one of the game’s greatest players – but because like Bryant, Frazier is a coach of his daughter’s team and he saw the same bond in Kobe and Gigi that he has with his daughter, Aaliyah The Frazier’s share the court at Plainfield Central, where Armond is in his third year as head coach and Aaliyah is a talented freshman who starts at guard for the Wildcats. “Immediately it sent chills down my spine,” Armond said of the helicopter crash. “I am in that same boat – I coach my daughter and we are very close. I was studying Kobe to see what he was doing so I could do the same things so I could keep the great relationship with my daughter. That really hurt me very much. Not only because I was following his career,

but because I understand what they had and what they are missing out on and what their family is missing out on – his wife and other daughters, and what the world is missing out on because he was a great advocate for girls basketball and it was only going to get better from there. “We had a long talk about it and I told her that is why we have to appreciate all the extra moments we have. I am not the extra sensitive guy and she knows that when I start talking that way, she listens.” Armond took over the program three seasons ago after Gregg Bayer from coaching the girls team to taking over the guys squad. “It was very unexpected. We were coming to Plainfield Central based on where we live and I knew coach Bayer, I had been coming to the games,” he said. “When the opportunity came and I applied and coach (Mark) Krusz (Central Athletic Director) hired me – we set a plan in place. “We worked out a lot, trained a lot. I knew she would be good, but I didn’t know how good she would be in ninth grade or if she would be ready to play on varsity. But, I told her if she was good enough, she would have to earn it. She is one of the hardest worker and she puts in the time and works her butt off. There is never anyone upset that she is playing – they want her in there.” When Aaliyah was good enough to make the varsity team her first year in high school, having a starting position was not the plan.
