he coronavirus pandemic has presented unique challenges to all of us. The Will County State’s Attorney’s office is no exception, as we seek to balance the demands of our justice system, both civil and criminal, with the health and safety needs of the Will County

I have been in constant communication with our county and court leadership as we coordinate and execute a plan that best achieves the goals of both justice and public health and safety. To that end, in the interest of public health, beginning March 19 our reception office will be closed to in-person visitors until further notice. MCHS provides meals, laptops to students during school closure
J
ust a month after starting a oneto-one (1:1) Chromebook pilot program to a select group of freshmen and sophomore classes, Minooka Community High School (MCHS) has now found itself immersed in a schoolwide E-Learning platform opportunity due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Last week Illinois Governor, J.B. Pritzker, announced that all Illinois K12 schools will be closed starting Tuesday, March 17th through Monday, March 30th due to concerns over the COVID-19 virus. Poised with the latest technology, teachers and students are finding the transition to E-Learning based instruction and engagement to be relatively smooth. “We have been preparing our teachers for E-Learning opportunities over the last few months and have complete confidence in their ability to lead, instruct, and engage during this time,” stated Bryan Zwemke, Building Principal at MCHS. “I have heard a great amount of positive feedback from teachers, and administration, regarding the last few days of E-Learning and how involved our students are. I am so proud of our school community and the professionalism that has revealed itself during the COVID-19 outbreak. I couldn’t be prouder.” Continued Principal Zwemke. During this time, students are encouraged to receive instruction and activities from their teachers through a pilot of the MCHS E-Learning model. Although these next few days
are non-attendance days and activities provided by teachers will not be graded, MCHS will follow guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and offer learning opportunities for students. During this past Wednesday and Thursday, MCHS arranged a two-day pickup schedule for Meals and Laptops for all MCHS students while supplies lasted. The pickup was held at MCHS South Campus between 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM. MCHS Technology Department assigned 77 laptops that were checked-out by families for student use, and Quest Food Management Services, Inc. provided over 300 meals for students over the two-day period. The remaining meals were donated to a Grace Bible Church of Shorewood, who in turn, will help their immediate congregation and surrounding community feed children in need. “Witnessing the way our school
staff stepped outside their normal scope of work to ensure our students and families were taken care of during this time, was nothing short of amazing,” stated Brent Edwards, Director of Community Relations at MCHS. “I was in awe of how quickly this was organized and arranged.” Continued Edwards. MCHS will continue to closely monitor recommendations and guidance from the CDC, Illinois Department of Public Health, Grundy County Department of Health, and the Illinois State Board of Education, regarding the coronavirus and will provide updates to teachers, staff, students, and families as soon as there are any significant changes in recommendations for schools. MCHS has also created a coronavirus (COVID-19) resource page on their website, MCHS.net, with information regarding school updates, prevention tips, and other resources.
State’s Attorney Glasgow announces Circuit Judge Tomczak sentences Bahaa Sam to 29 years for bludgeoning wife to death JOLIET, IL - Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow has announced that Bahaa Sam, 54, of Tinley Park was sentenced to 29 years in prison with no possibility of parole by Circuit Judge Amy Bertani Tomczak for the gruesome murder of his then 38-year-old wife Nermeen on December 19, 2012. A jury found Sam guilty on November 15, 2018, of first-degree murder in bludgeoning his wife to death with a weightlifting bar following an argument. One of the couple’s four children, their then four-year-old boy, witnessed the beating. Sam clubbed his wife repeatedly in their front yard with a curling bar, resulting in severe trauma to the back of her head, and then moved the body under an evergreen tree. The body was discovered by an individual driving past the couple’s home. “It is truly impossible to comprehend the visceral violence of the savage bludgeoning of this defenseless mother of four,” Glasgow said. “Sam’s ruthless beating of his wife as his innocent four-year-old son witnessed the atrocity is irrefutable evidence of an abandoned and malignant heart. Prison cannot undo the horror this coldblooded murderer perpetrated upon his family.” Three of Sam’s four children testified during the course of trial. He had faced a range of 20 to 60 years in prison. The jury spent

less than three hours deliberating Sam’s guilt. In addition to the murder conviction, he previously had pled guilty to battery involving his wife. Glasgow praised the Tinley Park police for their work in investigating the crime, the hard work of Assistant State’s Attorneys Steve Platek and Tom Slazyk who prosecuted the case, victim advocate Kelly Sullivan, and Gus Martinucci who provided audio and video assistance throughout the course of the trial.
All Will County preserves access area parking lots, dog parks closed as of March 21 due to coronavirus pandemic All Forest Preserve District preserve access area parking lots and dog parks will close as of sunset Saturday through April 7 due to the stay-at-home mandate issued Friday, March 20, by Gov. J.B. Pritzker as a result of the new coronavirus pandemic. Trails will remain open as long as they can be accessed safely on foot and bicycle and people continue to practice social distancing of at least 6 feet as recommended by federal health authorities. Dog parks are being closed because they are gathering places that place people in closer proximity to each other, which could lead to the spread of COVID-19. “We are asking everyone to try to adhere to the governor’s stayat-home mandate, which asks the public to eliminate unnecessary travel,” said Ralph Schultz, the Forest Preserve’s chief operating officer. “We want people to be able to enjoy nature, but we all still must adhere to the state’s stay-athome mandate.” The cancellation of all public programs and all volunteer workdays also will be extended through April 7. If programs are rescheduled later in the spring or summer, they will be added to the online Event Calendar.

Ogden Avenue resurfacing in Westmont CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that resurfacing of Ogden Avenue (U.S. 34) between west of Washington Street and east of Kingery Highway (Illinois 83), in Westmont, will require intermittent daytime lane closures beginning, weather permitting, April 6. One lane in each direction will remain open at all times and access to businesses in the work zone will be maintained. The project, which consists of patching and resurfacing, pedestrian ramps and replacing deteriorated medians and curbs, is expected to be completed by September. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment. Moody’s Upgrades COD’s Bond Rating By: Jennifer Duda, College of DuPage Moody’s has revised the College of DuPage bond rating from “Aa1” to “Aaa,” the highest possible rating, and affirmed its rating outlook of “stable” on the College’s outstanding general obligation bonds. In rendering the decision, Moody’s cited a number of factors, including: Very strong financial operation resulting in ample reserve levels Improved management Low debt burden “We are gratified that Moody’s recognizes our strong financial condition and the professionalism of the College’s financial administration,” said College of DuPage President Dr. Brian Ca-
puto. “We take our fiscal responsibility to our constituents very seriously and see this upgrade as affirmation of our efforts.” The upgrade comes four years after the College’s rating was downgraded amid administrative struggles. The rating agency wrote in its March 13 rationale, “The upgrade to Aaa reflects ongoing governance improvements that have resulted in the College’s accreditation being removed from probation by the Higher Learning Commission coupled with an exceptionally healthy financial position.” Additionally, incorporated in the rating is the College’s substantial and diversified tax base that benefits from an affluent demographic profile and modest debt burden.
Mayor Gunter announces Declaration of Local State of Emergency On March 20, Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter declared a local State of Emergency for the Village of Westmont. This declaration is valid for a period of seven days, unless extended by the Village Board. The declaration, which is allowed under State Law regarding specific circumstances, is in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and allows the Mayor to take action necessary to combat the spread of COVID-19, including, but not limited to: Expenditure of funds including emergency purchasing, and deployment of personnel, equipment and supplies; Activate emergency response plans and mutual aid agreements; Cooperation with other governmental agencies; Provide for emergency staffing, even if the same conflicts with the requirements of collective bargaining agreements; and Suspend water shut-offs by the Village of Westmont. Update: New lunch pickup and delivery procedures to begin Thursday, March 26 Meals will be provided following this schedule
Dear District 58 Families, District 58 began providing free meals to children this past week, and we are excited to see great participation from our community. Every child, age 18 or under, living in District 58 is eligible for this service. We will continue to provide these meals through the duration of our school closure. However, starting Thursday, March 26, we will only provide meal pickup and delivery on Mondays and Thursdays to encourage social distancing and to help keep our community and staff safe. Meals will be provided following this schedule: Thursdays: Children will receive lunches for Thursday and Friday. Mondays: Children will receive lunches for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Since this new process begins next Thursday, District 58 intends to continue daily pickup and delivery next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
DIRECTIONS FOR WEEKDAY LUNCH PICKUP
Meals can be picked up at Herrick Middle School or O’Neill Middle School, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays throughout the upcoming school closures. We will provide each student with three meals on Monday, and two meals on Thursday. (Meals will still be available for pick up on Tuesday 3/24 and Wednesday 3/25 – but you are welcome to grab all three if you would prefer.) A staff member must write down the name of any student receiving a lunch due to the need for record-keeping; however no family will be charged for any meals received. To keep all of our families and staff members safe, we are asking that our meal pickups be contact-free. The details for how to pick-up meals at each school are listed below: Herrick – Drive north into the parking lot, past the main office. You will pull up to Door #2, located next to the loading dock. (see map) O’Neill – Enter the parking lot on the south side of the building, and drive past the building westbound. Pull up to Door #6, the athletic entrance. (see map) A staff member will walk the meals out to your car, and write down the
name of any students receiving meals. Please remain in your car and wait for someone to bring you the meals. If you intend to walk to the school to pick up meals, please walk to the designated entrance and wait outside for a staff member to bring you meals.
DIRECTIONS FOR DELIVERY District 58 delivers weekday lunches directly to families who request it. Starting Thursday, March 26, District 58 will only make deliveries on Thursdays and Mondays. On Thursdays, families will receive two lunches for each child, and on Mondays, they will receive three lunches. Please sign up here to receive meals for the duration of our school closure. n the morning of March 22, Niles police officer Jerry Walczak took helped
a homeless veteran in town. The veteran had no shoes, no food and soiled clothing. While he did this, Walczak was unknowingly being photographed by another officer. “We are so humbled our officers are always doing the right thing,”
a social media post of the event read. Walczak reached into his own pocket and bought the veteran new shoes, clothes and toiletries from the Walmart on west Golf Road as well as a burrito from Chipotle Mexican Grill with his own money.

Skokie Fire Department warns about mixing household chemicals Dangers of Mixing Household Chemical Cleaners
From Skokie Fire Chief Jeffrey Hoeflich: In a time of uncertainty with COVID-19 amongst us, many of the Village of Skokie’s citizens are seeking ways in which to disinfect household surfaces to limit the spread of COVID-19 and other germs and/ or viruses. There are many social media sources that are encouraging citizens to create their own cleaners by mixing commonly found household cleaners. Though this may seem like a surefire way to eliminate household germs and diseases, the mixing of chemicals can produce highly toxic fumes or create an extremely corrosive product. The Skokie Fire Department strongly encourages citizens to refrain from the mixing of household chemicals. County Sheriff Dart institutes measures to address COVID-19 threat

ook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart continues to address the threat of COVID-19 by implementing comprehensive precautionary measures across the Sheriff’s Office to ensure the health and safety of staff, detainees and the public. Sheriff Dart previously activated

COVID-19 service update from GROOT Bleach + Vinegar = Chlorine gas. This can lead to coughing, breathing problems, burning and watery eyes. Chlorine gas and water also combine to make hydrochloric and hypochlorous acids. Bleach + Ammonia = Chloramine. This can cause shortness of breath and chest pain. Bleach + Rubbing alcohol = Chloroform. Another highly toxic combination!! Hydrogen peroxide + Vinegar = peracetic/ peroxyacetic acid. This combination can be highly corrosive. Always read the caution labels on
the office’s 24/7 Critical Incident Command Center, which has been tracking COVID-19 related concerns in the Sheriff’s Office. To date, there have been few concerns, and no known cases of COVID-19 at the Cook County Department of Corrections. Incident Command is also commu-
nicating with public health and law enforcement agencies about ways to help prevent the spread of the virus. Through these communications, our staff have also been kept updated on ways to protect themselves. The office

Niles Township High Schools District 219 superintendent issues statement for students, families Dear D. 219 Families, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker issued an executive order requiring residents to “stay at home” effective Saturday, March 21 at 5 p.m. through the end of Tuesday, April 7. As part of Governor Pritzker’s order, he announced that schools will remain closed, with a new tentative reopening date of Wednesday, April 8. During this stay at home order, essential school personnel may still report to work as long as they are practicing social distancing. This is important to our district, since we have employees who will be in our schools to help assist with lunch pickup, providing technical support to students, cleaning and maintaining our buildings, and providing support from the administration. Our main concern continues to be the health and safety of our students and their families and of our faculty and staff members. To that end, I engaged in a conference call today with the other Niles Township superintendents and government and public agency officials from our four villages. We continue to work together so that we can provide a continuity of essential services to our constituents between and among our various agencies. ith boredom really close to setting in for all Americans right now, young children will be the first to have a meltdown – not understanding why they have stay inside, can’t go see grandma or are not allowed to have friends over to play. One Chicago native now living in Iowa is helping the cause. Jessica Fick, who works at the University of Iowa by day, is trading in her Hawkeye yellow and donning her yellow ballgown and long curls and chatting with children as Disney’s Belle in the evenings and on weekends. Jessica has been working as a prin-
cess for six years and sees this as a chance to help out in a time of need all across the globe. “I love it. I originally started dressing like a Princess for sick kids, through a group called Relentless, and have FaceTimed with them over the years when they’re not able to go out or are in the hospital or just need a friend,” Jessica said. “They can’t always do normal kid stuff. The kids now can’t really do normal kid stuff either, so this wasn’t too much different. It seemed logical to apply what I’ve done in the past with the current situation. I think we all have ways we can help make the world a brighter place and this seemed like a good time for me to pull out the princess dress. “The joy and excitement of the
kids’ kind of makes you forget all the seriousness that’s going on in the world and gives you hope. I know that parents and kids are having a tough time of it right now, and this is something I can do to help without anyone having to leave home. It’s great so see the happiness on kids’ faces the excitement that these calls bring. Time, knowledge can erase fear Dear Dave, I went through a divorce a couple of months ago, and I’m not sure what to do next. I received custody of our kids, ages 13 and 15, plus I have a good job and I got the house in the settlement. It’s a nice, simple home, but it’s paid for and worth about $200,000. I receive $1,400 a month in child support, and I got $125,000, which was half our savings. I also have no other debt. Most of my friends are telling me I should begin investing, but they all have different ideas about where I should put the money. Can you give me some guidance?

I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through this. Divorce is hard enough when it’s just a couple, but it must be incredibly difficult with kids involved. Make sure you spend lots of time hugging on them, and telling them how much you love them. God bless you guys. Ok, I know your friends are just trying to help, but I wouldn’t follow their financial advice right now. The
trauma from your divorce is still fresh, and you should never make important, long-range decisions when your emotions are messed up. If there’s anything positive in all this, it’s that you’re in a really nice place where your finances are concerned. You’ve got a good job, you have no debt, and you’ve got six figures sitting in the bank. My advice is to park that money in a CD until you feel you’re getting over the shock of what has happened. You won’t make much money doing this, but you won’t lose any, either. Then, after some time has passed, I want you to find a good financial advisor—one with the heart of a teacher—and look into investing $25,000 in good growth stock mutual funds. I’m talking about ones with at least a 10-year track record of success. Time and knowledge can help erase fear, Michelle. Plus, you’ve got a responsibility to yourself and your kids to invest wisely.
