Jane Addams on Best Schools in Will County list

A. Vito Martinez tabbed as Best of Romeoville Jane Addams Middle School has been named to Chicago’s Magazine’s annual list of Best Schools in Will County which will appear in the magazine’s September edition.

Jane Addams is ranked third on the elementary and middle schools list. Jane Addams is second among the middle schools listed and one of only two middle schools to make the top ten in the elementary and middle school category.

A.Vito Martinez Middle School Recognized as Best of Romeoville A.Vito Martinez Middle School has been selected for a 2019 Best of Romeoville Award in the Schools category. The Best of Romeoville Program identifies Romeoville civic organizations and businesses in the community “who help make the Romeoville area a great place to live, work and play.”

Martinez Middle School is being recognized for the integral role the students, parents, and staff members play in providing an outstanding educational experience for students in the community.

VVSD Board of Education Superintendent Search Community Survey Open Through Sept. 2 The Valley View School District 365U Board of Education is conducting a community survey as part of the process for identifying candidates to become the next superintendent of schools. Current Superintendent of School Dr. James A. Mitchem, Jr. will be retiring at the end of the 2019-20 school year.

The VVSD Board of Education invites any interested community member or VVSD staff member to complete the survey which con-

tains seven questions and will take about five minutes to complete.

This survey will be open through Monday, Sept. 2.

Marching Spartans Make Final Preparations for Their Season

The Village of Romeoville is conducting a Holiday Card Design Contest open to Romeoville residents of all ages and artistic abilities. The design of the winner will be used on the official Village of Romeoville 2019 Holiday Card.

The Romeoville HS Marching Spartans are now officially ready for their season after the 16th Annual Marching Spartans Picnic, Field Show Demo & March Off. This year’s Drum Majors will be Zoe Anthony, Becca Barrett, Jacob Pipowski, and Zoe Swank. This year’s March Off was won by Daisy Orozco, followed by Rochelle Rocha in second place and Ethan Justice in third place.

The Marching Spartans will compete seven times this season, highlighted by their Home Show on Sat. Oct. 5 and their 24th appearance at the Illinois State Field Championship on Sat. Oct. 19. They will also perform at the first home football game of the year on Fri.

Northern Illinois Food Bank The Northern Illinois Food Bank is conducting mobile food banks and micro pantries in the vicinity in the near future.

There will be a Mobile Food Bank on Fri, Sept. 6 from 3-5 pm at the First Assembly of God Church located at 1741 Essington Rd. in Joliet. Please bring bags or boxes.

Micro Pantries are designed to allow anonymous food pick-up for

Son has a good income and low rent, but is asking me for money DEAR DAVE, Our son is 27, and he has a good job making $55,000 a year. Recently, we learned he financed an expensive car he’s now upside down on. In addition, he has accumulated over $15,000 in credit card debt. He lives in a small town, and only pays $650 a month in rent, but he is asking for money. We taught him about living on a budget and staying out of debt when he was younger, and now it seems he didn’t listen very well. How do you think we should handle this situation?

BRYCE DEAR BRYCE, The first thing I’d advise telling him is that you and his mom aren’t going to whip out the checkbook, and make his problems disappear. That may sound harsh, but he had a really good thing going until he messed it up by acting impulsively and irresponsibly with his finances. Nope, I wouldn’t take care of it for him—not at his age.

This young man needs to have some skin in the game. I’d tell him to sell the fancy car, and get something way cheaper to drive for a while. I’m talking about a little beater in the $2,000 to $3,000 range. It sounds like he’ll have to get a small loan to cover the difference, but a little car debt is better than a lot of car debt. I’d also advise him to pick up a part-time job nights or weekends until he gets that credit card debt paid off.

In other words, let him wallow in it and worry about things for a while.

Then, if he’s willing to accept responsibility for his actions, and starts handling money more wisely, you two might help out every so often with a little extra cash on the payments.

Lewis University women s volleyball team is picked to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference title The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Aug. 20 that the No. 7 Lewis University women’s volleyball team was picked to win the GLVC Title in the annual GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

The GLVC regular season with feature a 15-match, single round-robin schedule this fall with eight pairs of travel partners. The regular season champion, along with the next seven best teams based on Conference winning percentage, will earn a berth to the eight-team GLVC Volleyball Championship Tournament on Nov. 21-23 at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill. Lewis finished with 216 points, including eight first place votes, while Rockhurst was picked second with 204 points and also received eight first place votes.

“The GLVC has proven to be one of the toughest conferences in country every year,” Lewis head women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said.

“For us to be picked as one of the top teams, is not only an honor – but a tremendous challenge.”

The Flyers, who finished 29-8 in 2018, won the Midwest Regional title and advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the second time in three years.

LEWIS NATIONAL RANKING ENTERING THE SEASON

They return two All-GLVC selections in seniors Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg).

Also back for Lewis this season are returning starters: Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic), (NCAA All-Tournament Team), Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) and Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./ West Chicago).

Preuss, a Second Team All-GLVC selection last year, averaged 3.62 points, 3.00 kills and 3.24 digs per set. She was also a Baden/GLVC Offensive Player of the Week recipient last season.

Stefanon, also a Second Team AllGLVC selection last year, averaged 3.08 points, 2.42 kills and 1.15 blocks per set.

Lewis was also picked seventh in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Coaches poll which was also announced on Tuesday. The Flyers were joined in the AVCA poll by Rockhurst at No. 14, Drury at No. 18 and Illinois Springfield was receiving votes.

The Flyers open the 2019 season on Friday, Sept. 6, as they take on Millersville at 10:30 a.m. at the Nova Southeastern Shark Invitational in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
