Eatery re-brands for May By Sherri Dauskurdas Staff Reporter

Restaurants come and go, especially in the past few years, but when Louie’s Chophouse, Shorewood’s mainstay for birthdays and business dinners, shuttered its doors last August, it took people by surprise. The good news was that it wasn’t going out of business, just undergoing a transformation. Louie’s Chophouse closed its doors August 6, 2011 to completely change the style and focus of the restaurant. Citing lessened demand for a steakhouse in the area, General Manager George Gelis said the restaurant, located at 700 W. Jefferson Street, would reopen in November 2011 as a sports bar. Since then, with input from the community, the plan has been tweaked, and opening has been pushed back. The old Louie’s Chophouse will become Skooters Roadhouse, featuring combinations of Southern/ Country barbecue and American. Items such as barbequed ribs, Southern fried chicken and pulled pork will grace the menu, as will

burgers, salads, sandwiches and appetizers. “The project has taken longer than we all expected but when complete it will all be worth it,” said Gelis, who estimates the restaurant will open for business sometime in May. “We did a lot of work and we are very proud of how everything has turned out. We are looking for a May 1 grand opening, but nothing is written in stone.” Louie’s Chophouse opened in Shorewood in December 2002. Its other location at 4642 W. 103rd Street in Oak Lawn remains open. Gelis said the Shorewood restaurant would continue to focus on the quality of its food and environment, but pattern it more toward families. Gelis has said there is an increase in demand for less expensive, more casual familyoriented restaurants, and he is looking forward to it being a great fit for Shorewood. Skooters Roadhouse will become the third casual restaurant opened by Gelis and his family, which also operate Jameson’s Pub locations in See CHOP, page 2
