Jeff Mudgett speaks about his greatgreat grandfather, H.H. Holmes

For Jeff Mudgett, there is no need to imagine.

For the first 40 years of his life Mudgett, a California lawyer and former Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, knew he wasn’t like everyone else.

“I didn’t know who I was, I didn’t know why I had strange feelings,” Mudgett said Oct. 19 at the White Oak Library Author Fest, where he was the featured author. “I knew the emotions most people carried in their life and the sympathies they had weren’t natural to me. They were something I had to build into my life because I wanted to be like everyone else, but I didn’t have them.

“I never walked around with a need to kill someone, but I knew I was different. There is a little psychopath in all of us, but we control it.”

His questions of why he was different were answered more than 20 years ago when Mudgett found out he is the great-great grandson of H.H. Holmes – America’s first serial killer.

He learned the secret at a family gathering.

His grandmother, who was fascinated with family genealogy, was talking about her theory that they were related Gen. Robert E. Lee when his grandfather broke his silence of 60 years.

“There were about 17 of us that night at my grandparents home in Itascadero, Ca. We are a little bit of a ruckus family,” Mudgett said. “My grandfather was a very stoic man and he sat and listened to my grand-

I decided to research his life instead of running away like my family had for 100 years. my life (as a lawyer) was investigation and solving mysteries and this was dumped in my lap and I am not the kind of person to run from this. mother talk until he had enough and he slammed his chair against the wall, the picture came down – I can still hear the crash and he told her she was wrong and he had a secret he had kept to himself – that we were related to H.H. Holmes. I will never forget that he never took his eyes off me. This wasn’t for my cousins or my brother or sister or my dad – he was speaking to me.”

Holmes, who’s birth name was Herman Webster Mudgett, was born roughly a month after the Civil War broke out to an affluent family in Gilmanton, NH. He married his first wife, Clara, in New Hampshire in 1878, had a son, but he eventually

abandoned them and left for Chicago. In 1887, he married his second of three wives, Myrta Belknap, and lived in Wilmette.

Holmes killed many of his victims in a mixed-use building he owned in Chicago in the late 1800s – less than five miles from the site of the 1893 World’s Fair. The building became known as the Murder Castle.

“This is a guy that graduated with a doctorate degree from the University of Michigan, he had an IQ off the charts,” Mudgett said. “He could have been a Louis Pasteur if he wanted to.

He was walking around the World’s Fair with Tesla and Edison and the Wright Brothers. He could have been

designing medicine, instead he was on the prowl for innocent victims.”

It is believed that Holmes may have been responsible for up to 200 murders in the United States, but Mudgett believes he was also responsible for at least one murder in England that was attributed to Jack the Ripper.

That theory spawned the 2017 History Channel show ‘American Ripper.’

The show traced Mudgett’s journey into the mind of his great-greatgrandfather and his goal to prove America’s first serial killer was Jack the Ripper.

“In my opinion, we have solved that,” Mudgett said. “I had interesting conversations with Scotland Yard and

they have admitted they knew there was a copycat for decades. (Holmes) was Jack the Ripper because he was the one that wrote the ‘Dear Boss’ letter and coined the phrase. On the show, there were two linguists who said the letter was written by an educated American trying to sound British. It is my theory that Holmes wrote Dear Boss and murdered Catherine Eddowes. There were already two murders before that. The Mary Kelly murder after had no similar M.O. at all.

“History has allowed for 130 years, Jack the Ripper to be the killer of five women in London. They are starting to realize now that it was not one man.”

The ‘Dear Boss’ letter was penned in red ink and received by the Central News Agency of London in September of 1888 where the killer gave himself the now famous moniker.

Mudgett also wrote the book, “Bloodstains” a book based on the true story of Mudgett finding out who he was related to and the direction his life took from that day forward.

“Imagine being told that and then having to absorb that in a short amount of time,” Mudgett said. “I decided to research his life instead of running away like my family had for 100 years. My life (as a lawyer) was investigation and solving mysteries and this was dumped in my lap and I am not the kind of person to run from this.”

Mudgett is in discussion about two more television shows as well as a feature film on his life and how he has dealt with the horrifying secret.

He is also trying to explore the grounds of Holmes infamous murder castle, located at South Wallace and 63rd streets in Chicago, now the location of the Englewood Post Office.

The murder castle was a boobytrapped former hotel with soundproof rooms, secret passages and a disorienting maze of hallways and staircases. The rooms were outfitted with trapdoors and chutes that dropped Holmes’ victims to the building’s basement, which housed vats of acid, a crematorium, and other ways to dispose of bodies.

“We are trying to get the (federal government) to allow us excavate the ground,” Mudgett said of digging on Post Office property. “We have a TV interest that will pay for it if they can film as we do it, but it is the feds, so I don’t know if they will allow it.”

While it is a wait-and-see game for Mudgett’s target of unearthing remnants of the murder castle, but no matter the outcome, he will never stop trying to uncover secrets and stories of his most notorious relative.

At 8:30 a.m., J.J. Amador, 27, allegedly entered Steak and Shake, 2675 N. Plainfield Road, and ordered food.

“While waiting for the food, the suspect asked to use the business’s phone,” Joliet police said. “Shortly after the suspect used the phone, he pulled out a handgun and demanded money.”

But employees were unable to open the register and the robber left the restaurant and fled west.

According to reports, responding officers found Amador in the Home Depot parking lot and identified him as the suspect. A firearm was also

found nearby.

No one was injured in the robbery attempt.

Amador, of the 200 block of Republic Avenue, was arrested on a charge of armed robbery and booked into the Will County jail.

Troy 8th-grader will perform with Joliet Symphony Orchestra noelle klima, flute player, will perform with community orchestra in november Noelle Klima, who plays the flute, recently won a concerto competition to perform as a featured soloist with the community orchestra, which is sponsored by the University of St. Francis.

Noelle was also named to the elite ILMEA Junior Music Festival for the third year in a row. She has been a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra for the past two years.

“It’s really exhilarating because I really love the flute,” she said, “but I never thought that I would get the opportunity to play with all these different people. It’s very gratifying to be able to accomplish these things.”

Noelle has been guided by Troy Community School District 30-C

band directors Jennifer Carlton and William Goetz at William B. Orenic Intermediate School and Troy Middle School, beginning with band in fifth grade.

“Noelle is an extremely hard worker and achieves amazing results when she puts her mind to it,” Carlton said. “I remember in fifth grade band, she figured out the Harry Potter Theme Song on her own, after about only four to five weeks of playing the flute. I knew at that point I needed to introduce her parents to a private flute instructor to further inspire Noelle’s drive and momentum.”

“Noelle loves to accept new challenges and works exceptionally hard to attain her musical goals,” Noelle’s private music instructor Michelle Mathena said.

Noelle has also received many top awards at solo and ensemble competitions and was principal flute at the Music for All Summer Symposium at Ball State University. She also performs with La Banda Siciliana di Chicago.

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com The IHSA playoffs open this weekend and 13 Enterprise Newspapers teams advanced to the second season, including Class 8A No. 1 seed Minooka.

Locally, three teams advnace as the two Southwest Prairie Conference Division champions meet up in Minooka and Joliet Catholic looks for back to back titles.

No. 32 Joliet West @ No. 1 Minooka Friday, Nov. 1 - 7 p.m.

In Class 8A, the No. 32 seed Tigers are the lone 4-5 team in the field, getting in the postseason because of winning the Southwest Prairie Conference East Division.

West, Plainfield East and Plainfield South all had 4-1 league records and the Tigers held the tiebreaker of fewest points allowed in the head-to-head games.

The conference title is the first for the Tigers in 50 years and they become first 4-5 8A conference champion in the two decades of the eight-class system.

Minooka, on the other hand, ran the table, posting a perfect 9-0 record on the season and winning the SPC West. Of Minooka’s nine opponents this season, seven are headed to the playoffs. The Indians scored an average of 34.3 points per game this year and have allowed 9.3 – the fifth best defensive output in Class 8A.

West had six of its opponents make the playoffs this season. The Tigers have scored 19.2 points per game on the season, the fewest in 8A and have allowed 17.6 points per contest.

As a program, Joliet West has never won a playoff game, posting an 0-3 record in three appearances. The last time the Tigers were in the postseason was 2017.

For Minooka, it is the 18th playoff appearance in school history and third straight. In the school lore, Minooka is 14-17 overall in postseason.

No 19 Barrington @ No. 14 Notre Dame Saturday, Nov. 2 - 4 p.m.

The Dons were on a roll to open the season, winning their first seven games. Over the last two weeks without the services of senior running back Julian Schurr, Notre Dame fell in the final two weeks and finished the season 7-2, but still earned home game in the playoffs.

It is the Dons’ fifth consecutive trip to the postseason and 20th overall, posting a record of 15-19 over the years.

Even without Schurr the past two games, junior quarterback and ND have averaged 22.3 points per game. Five of the Notre Dame opponents are in the playoffs this year.

The defense has been a key for the Dons this season, as ND has

Barrington comes into the playoffs with a 6-3 record and only three of its opponents advanced to the playoffs this year.

The Broncos have scored on average of 26.7 points per game this season and allowed 9.8 this season.

They have advanced to the playoffs a total of 25 times, this year being the seventh-straight season. In their history, Barrington has an overall postseason record of 26-24.

No. 18 Loyola @ No. 15 Maine South Saturday, Nov. 2 - 7 p.m.

As it has several times in its history, Maine South is in the playoffs after dropping its first two games of the season. This year, those losses came to Mt. Carmel and Glenbard West, a pair of teams that ended the season undefeated.

Glenbard West is the No. 2 overall seed in Class 8A, while Mt. Carmel is No. 1 in Class 7A, so while only three opponents have made the playoffs, to say the Hawks are battle tested is an understatement.

Despite battling injuries this season, Maine South has scored an average of 31.8 points per game, the 10th most in Class 8A. The Hawk defense has allowed only 16.0 points per contest.

The playoff appearance is the 28th consecutive trip for Maine South, the most of any team in the state of Illinois. Maine South has been to the postseason a total of 35 times in school history. South has six state championships three runner-up showings in school lore.

Loyola, who was upset by Marist in week 7, finished the year 7-2.

The Ramblers are in the postseason for the 30th time in school history and 17th consecutive and have made the state finals eight times, winning three times.

Six of Loyola’s opponents this season are in the IHSA playoffs. The Ramblers have scored an average of 31.0 points per game and allowed 11.3.

No. 20 Plainfield North @No. 13 Fremd Friday, Nov. 1 - 7:30 p.m.

After winning their first four games, the Tigers dropped four of the last six, including a 31-7 loss to Yorkville in week 9.

It is the eighth time Plainfield North is in the playoffs and first time in two years.

The Tigers have an overall 5-7 postseason record. Five of the North opponents qualified for the playoffs.

Under first-year coach Anthony Imbordino, the Tigers averaged 25.8 points per game and held their opponents to 13.6.

Fremd comes in 7-2 on the season and averaged 21.8 points for and 12.6 points against this season.

It is Fremd’s 28th consecutive time in the playoffs, but only its second-straight

appearance.

“We are excited to return to the playoffs,” Imbordino said. “Fremd is a great opponent, well coached, stout defense, weapons on offense “We need to make minimal mistakes, execute our game plan and play Tiger Football.”

No. 21 Bolingbrook @ No. 12 Hinsdale Central Saturday, Nov. 2 - 6 p.m.

An upset loss to Andrew in week 9 saw Bolingbrook finish the season with a 6-2 record, only losing to Homewood-Flossmoor and state power Lincoln-Way East the first eight weeks.

This season, the Raider defense has allowed only 11.6 points per game, while scoring 27.2, while 8-1 Hinsdale Central has scored 29.3 and allowed 13.0.

This is the 31st overall trip to the postseaosn for the Raiders, tied for secondwith Oswego and behind only Maine South’s 35 in 8A. It is the third-straight trip for Bolingbrook.

It is the ninth year in a row the Red Devils are in the postseason, and 24th in school history.

No. 29 Plainfield East @ No. 4 Warren Saturday, Nov. 2 - 6 p.m.

The Bengals got in the playoffs with a 5-4 record and travel to Gurnee to take on 9-0 Warren – the team on paper with the best defense in Class 8A, allowing on average of only 2.3 points per game.

The Blue Devils also score an average of 36.4 points per contest.

It is Warren’s third consecutive trip the playoffs and 28th overall appearance.

The Bengals are 5-4 and are in the postseason for the third time overall and the first time since 2014.

Five of East’s opponents are in the playoffs. On the season, the Bengals have averaged 25.9 points per game and have allowed 23.4 points per contest. The 2.4 point per game differential is the third lowest in Class 8A.

No. 30 Plainfield South @ No. 3 Lincoln-Way East Friday, Nov. 1 - 6 p.m.

A week 8 loss to Joliet West allowed the Tigers to get in the playoffs and robbed South of the conference championship.

It also bought the Cougars a date with Lincoln-Way East, one of the top programs in the state.

South advanced to the playoffs for the second-straight season and seventh time in school history. The Griffins have never missed the postseason in their 19 years in existence.

This season, Lincoln-Way East has a 9-0 record and has averaged 34.3 points per game and has allowed only 6.7 points per contest.

A loss to cross-town rival Downers Grove North put the Mustangs at 5-4 and the No. 31 seed and a date with, on paper, the second most prolific offense, averaging 46.0 points per game. Warren’s defense allows only 7.4 points per contest.

Only two of the Mustang opponents are in the playoffs this season, compared to only three for the Hilltoppers.

Downers Grove South is in the postseason for the first time since 2014 and the 30th time in school history.

The Mustangs averaged 24.7 points per game this season and have allowed 15.2 points.

A win over District 99 rival Downers Grove South in the final game of the regular season earned the Trojans their fifth win and advance into the playoffs with a 5-4 record.

Up first for the Trojans is a trip to Des Plaines and a meeting with 8-1 Maine West.

It is Maine West’s third consecutive trip to the playoffs and seventh in the school history.

The Trojans are in the playoffs for the 20th time and the first since 2017, while three of the Tro-

jan’s opponents join them in the postseason.

During the regular season, North tallied an average of 25.3 points per game, while allowing 19.7.

On paper, there is not team in Class 7A that has played a tougher schedule than Benet Academy.

Seven of the Redwings’ nine opponents this season advanced to the playoffs, the most in the class.

Five of Glenbard North’s opponents advanced to the postseason.

Benet Academy is in the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season and the 23rd time in the history of the school, while North is in for the 22nd time, but forst since 2017.

Both teams come in 6-3 on the year.

On the season, Benet has averaged 24.8 points per game and allowed 21.7.

The Panthers scored 25.7 points per game on offense, but only allowed 14.0.

CLASS 5A No. 9 Joliet Catholic @ No. 8 Morton Friday, Nov. 1 -7 p.m.

The defending state champion Hilltoppers enter the playoffs with a 6-3 mark on the season and will make the drive near Peoria to face 7-2 Morton.

In 5A, teams are split into two, 16-team brackets based on geography as well as record and playoff points.

A year ago, JCA needed to win its final game of the season just to make the playoffs, was the No. 14 seed in its 16-team bracket and defeated two undefeated and two one-loss teams en route to the state title.

Seven of JCA’s nine opponents from this season are in the postseaosn, while only four of Morton’s advanced.

The Hilltoppers are in the playoffs for a state-best 41st time and are looking to add to an Illinois record 14 titles.

Morton has been in the playoffs 20 times as a school and threestraight.

This season, Joliet Catholic has outscored its opponents on average 34.9-18.1, while Morton has scored 35.9 and allowed 18.9.

CLASS 3A No. 14 Lisle @ No. 3 Wilmington Friday, Nov. 1 -7 p.m.

Like 5A, Class 3A is also split into two, 16-team brackets based on geography as well as record and playoff points.

Lisle travels to one of the more intimidating places to play in the Chicagoland area in Wilmington.

The Wildcats are a perennial small school power and enter the game 8-1 on the season.

Wilmington has made the playoffs a 3A-best 24 times in a row and 27 in school history. Lisle is in for the 24th time overall and second consecutive.

On the season, Lisle has scored on average 27.0 points per game and allowed 18.4.

Wilmington averages 38.1 points per game scored and allows only 13.2.
