For some, it takes a very long time to decide what they want to do when they grow up. The counselors at Minooka Community High School (South Campus) decided to help those decisions happen a little earlier with a freshmen and sophomore Career Exploration Fair.

Held on Wednesday, October 30, 2019, the Career Exploration Fair filled the gymnasium at MCHS South Campus. The room was packed with tables and displays, business professionals and companies, and MCHS counselors. Everyone involved was ready to discuss career advice, answer questions, and help the students learn from professionals that were actively working in a career that interested them most.

In January, state law will significantly ease restrictions on marijuana possession and allow sales of cannabis products to recreational users at licensed dispensaries. Municipalities throughout Illinois are deciding whether to “opt in or opt out” of permitting dispensaries.

Shorewood has yet to propose any ordinance allowing or banning marijuana businesses.

On Nov. 12, village trustees hosted a public forum where about 50 residents came to share their views on the issue.

It seemed a slight majority is in favor of allowing marijuana sales, citing tax revenue and easier access for people seeking cannabis to deal with pain issues.

Others, however, worry condoning marijuana sales will diminish the village’s quality of life and overburden Shorewood police.

Jane Birkman was one resident in support of allowing marijuana businesses.

“Big tax dollars come in and that’s great. It isn’t always about the money, but it’s here already,” she said.

The village could implement a three percent tax on cannabis businesses. “Why let Joliet make all the money off it?” Josh Valle asked. “I’d rather have my kids getting it from a dispensary than on the street.”

Jca falls to sterling in the class 3a state championship match, earns program s 12th trophy

That is at the heart of all Joliet Catholic Academy athletics and the girls volleyball team is one of those top programs.

This season, the Angels battled injuries as well as a schedule that featured a conference that has a pair of nationally-ranked teams that played in the final four in Class 4A. JCA overcame all of that to place second in Class 3A at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal.

The Angels fell 25-16, 25-19 to defending champion Sterling, the same team that beat JCA in the state semifinals a season ago.

“I give these girls a lot of credit to continue on a great tradition of JCA volleyball. What they came through this year with all the injuries, it is such an honor to even make it here and to be here in the championship game is even more of an honor,” JCA coach Christine Scheibe said. “It was obvious that Sterling has that cohesiveness that they have been playing together for a long time. For the way we have had to play this season with all of the injuries, we were not there all of the time.”

The trophy was the 12th state trophy in the history of the program.

While the ultimate goal for the Angels was to win the state title, placing higher than last year was a goal they accomplished.

One injury reprieve JCA got was getting 6-foot junior outside hitter Jillian Gray back for the playoffs.

Gray led the Angels in kills in both matches at state, posting nine in the state final and seven in the semifinal.

Joliet catholic ousted by mascoutah in final seconds defending state champions come up short in title defense; will graduate only six seniors

@BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com In its IHSA Class 5A quarterfinal match-up, with St. Louis’ Metro-East Mascoutah Indians, the defending Class 5A State Champions from Joliet Catholic Academy (8-4), were deadlocked at 14-14 with 7:13 remaining, at Memorial Stadium in Joliet on Saturday night.

The visitors marched 70-yards on 15 plays behind their huge offensive line and scored the game-winning touchdown with 16 tics remaining on the scoreboard.

Led up front by offensive lineman, Matt Wilson (6-foot-5, 320), Elijah Peterson (6-foot-5, 320) and the smaller Patrick Grant, Jr (5-foot-8, 290), Indian senior halfback, Devin Wills (20 carries, 151 yards, 2 TDs) rambled into the end zone, from one yard out and broke hearts all over Joliet as the Hilltoppers fell 21-14.

Wills entered Saturday night’s quarterfinal contest, having rushed for 1,847 yards and had scored 27 touchdowns.

The Hilltoppers struck quickly in the first minute of the game.

Senior tailback Kenyetta Williams (18 carries, 134 yards, TD) electrified the huge Hilltopper contingent when he raced 66-yards to pay-dirt on the second play of the game.

Junior placekicker Jake Dixon’s first of two PAT’s, put the Hill up 7-0 with 11:04 remaining in the first quarter.

The fired-up Hilltopper defense, smothered the Indians and quickly picked up a three and out but could not move the ball.

Attempting to punt, the ball was muffed and the Indian defense blocked the kick and took over at the Hillltopper 21-yard line.

Mascoutah senior quarterback, Devon Ross (5-for-9, 74 yards, TD, INT) connected with senior widereceiver Tim Middleton for a 21-yard scoring strike.

After Logen Timon’s PAT, the game was tied at 7-7 with 7:04 in the first quarter.

There was no scoring in the second quarter and the teams went to halftime still deadlocked.

With 8:41 remaining in the third quarter, Wills raced 85-yards for a

touchdown and a 14-7 Indian lead.

The Hilltoppers answered with a 38-yard touchdown rumble from sophomore Jordan Anderson (14 carries, 136 yards, TD) to tie the game at 14-14.

The rest of the third quarter, the teams punted the ball back to each

other and the score remained deadlocked at 14-14.

With nine minutes remaining the Hilltoppers faced a third and four at the Indians 44-yard line.

Running behind JCA’s huge offensive line, Anderson had the Indians on their heels.

JCA sophomore quarterback, Aidan Voss ( 4-for-10, 33 yards, 2 INT) dropped back to pass and was sacked at midfield.

An incomplete pass on third downled to a punt that Middleton returned to the Indian 30-yard line with 7:13 remaining.

Six minutes and 57 seconds later, Wills’ one-yard touchdown run moved the 9-3 Indians into the Class 5A Final Four against Rochester (11-1) in Mascoutah next Saturday.

For the Hilltoppers who had only six seniors on their roster, the 2019 season was a tremendous success.

JCA won the inaugaral Chicago Catholic League/ East Suburban Catholic White Division championship.

Being a year ahead of schedule, they advanced to the IHSA Class 5A Elite 8.

“I told the seniors, that I am so proud of what they went through and accomplished in their four years at JCA,” Hilltopper coach Jake Jaworski said. “From suffering through losing freshman and sophomore team seasons to winning the Class 5A state championship as juniors and to making the Class 5A elite eight as seniors.

“To the many underclassman that we will have back in 2020, I told them they are now seniors and juniors and must look forward. They must also be ready to get back to work right now.”
