T
roy coach John Davis has been named the 2020 Distinguished Middle School Coach of the Year by the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association. Davis is head coach of the Troy boys cross country team and co-coach of the track and field team. Over his 28 years coaching at Troy, his teams have won six IESA state championships and finished 23 times in the top four. His athletes have earned 89 All-State medals at IESA State Meets. According to the ITCCCA website, Davis is one of the most successful coaches in Illinois history. Davis also helps direct the prestigious and largest middle school meet in Illinois, The Troy Invitational, at which 54 schools participated this year. “Growing up, John Davis was my coach at the Joliet Park district,” said Troy Athletic Director Meagan DeGroot. “I coached alongside him when I was a teacher, and now I am able to mentor him as a coach on staff at Troy. John is truly dedicated to the sport of running. He runs in his spare time and often goes to see the high school kids run after they graduate TMS. He has a passion for the sport and for the kids.” “John is perhaps one of the most dedicated coaches I’ve had the pleasure of working with,” Girls Cross-Country Coach Stephanie Oswald said. “He is committed to maintaining one of the most renowned middle school cross-country programs in our state. Mr. Davis is able to make the sport of running enjoyable for those of all ability levels by incorporating games and humor into our practices. The kids take such an interest in the activities we are doing that they don’t even realize how much they are actually running. It is so wonderful to see how

His interest in coaching began when his school-age sons took up running. Former Troy teacher and track coach Mark Clarke, now a Joliet Catholic Academy coach and teacher, took Davis under his wing and offered him a coaching position at Troy. Davis said Clarke “built the Troy Cross Country ship and put it on the path to success.” Coaching is more than just fun for Davis. It’s also an opportunity to instill important characteristics in the students. “At the middle school level,” he said, “it is important to make sure youth enjoy what they do. I think it is also important to help them develop discipline, confidence and positive character traits. I try to have a plan for every practice and not lose sight of the fact that we are working with the development of children who you want to be good citizens when they grow up.” Many of his former runners have gone on to compete at the high school and college level and have become coaches themselves.

The Department of Corrections reports Walls was released on parole last May from the Lawrence Correctional Center from a 25-year sentence for a 2006 armed robbery in Cook County. In 2007, Walls was being held at the Elgin Mental Health Center where he switched ID badges with a visitor who helped him escape and was recaptured following a standoff with police in Chicago. As a juvenile, Walls also was convicted of first-degree murder in the 1991 gang-related slaying of Jesse Fox, 14, on Chicago’s South Side.

or the majority of his life, Tom Hernandez has been fascinated about the idea of storytelling. Born and raised in Joliet, Hernandez has been writing personally and professionally since his childhood. He was a reporter for 10 years at several suburban daily and weekly newspapers, and wrote a “Slice of Life” column for another 11 years. Now, Hernandez serves as the Director of Community Relations for the Plainfield School District 202, but that doesn’t mean that he’s done inspiring and influencing other writers, and those that are close to him. “He’s a very kind, sweet, funny and intelligent human being,” said one of his daughters Emma Williams. “His writing has always been a large part of our lives, he was always writing down story ideas and trying to get us into writing and reading.”
According to reports, Walls was captured by the deputy after a short foot chase and arrested on charges of armed robbery, aggravated unlawful restraint, being an armed habitual criminal, unlawful use of a weapon by a street gang member, and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. The vehicle, however, drove away while the deputy was allegedly chasing Walls. Botzum said it was located a short time later in the 14000 blk of West Hickory Avenue in Lemont where it was stuck in a snow bank. “Tirnell L. Williams, 43 — a paraplegic — was taken into custody inside the vehicle without incident,” Botzum said in a statement. Williams was also arrested on an armed robbery charge and taken to Silver Cross Hospital where he was treated for
firing rounds at each other resulting in the victim being shot while inside one of the vehicles,” Botzum said. Javontae W. Gray, 22, was reportedly identified as the man who dropped Frazier at the hospital and was arrested when he returned a short time later. Gray has been charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, obstructing justice and resisting a police officer. Botzum said detectives also determined Rasean L. Stokes, 18, was also in one of the vehicles. Stokes was arrested Feb. 8 on charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm. On Feb. 15, police arrested Jeremiah J. Gavin, 22, on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm by a felon. Gavin is being held in the Will County jail on $2 million bond. Jail records show Gavin spent six months in the jail in 2018 on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Dave Says: Don’t play the timeshare game dear dave, How do you feel about timeshares, and the free trips and dinners they offer as part of their sales pitches? Is it possible to win with these things?
dear dan,
dan
In my opinion, timeshares are a complete waste of time and money.
Lots of folks go into this kind of thing believing they’ll play the game and win. They think they’ll get a vacation weekend and other free stuff, then just say “no” when the time comes. The problem is, most people aren’t as tough a sell as they think. Besides, do you really want to waste a weekend of your life letting some pushy salesper-
son twist your arm? That’s not my idea of fun. As a whole, timeshares have an incredibly high dissatisfaction rate. It’s almost impossible to find anyone who’s happy they bought into one, and there are good reasons for this. Why would you pay thousands of your hard-earned dollars for a
tiny place you may or may not get a chance to visit once a year? Add to this the fact that you have no equity in the place, and you’re stuck paying ongoing maintenance fees. My advice? Don’t take a chance playing the game, Dan. There are much better uses for your time and money!

Jca wins first regional title since 2016; grabs class 2a chicago christian regional over butler prep By drake skleBa For the bugle
@BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com Earlier this season Joliet Catholic Academy senior Mia Bertino became the newest member of the JCA 1,000 career-point club. Known for her deadly threepoint shooting accuracy, she will always be remembered as one of the all-time great Angels. On Thursday night, in the Angels’ IHSA Class 2A Chicago Christian Regional championship game versus Chicago’s Butler Prep (219), Bertino scored 14 consecutive points between the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter. Her long-range bombardment paced the Angels past the Lynx, 4539, for the title. After Butler Prep grabbed a 26-21 lead at the half Bertino (16 points, four 3’s, three rebounds, two steals), who had just two points at the break, took over. With 6:04 remaining in the third quarter, Bertino’s first three-point bomb pulled the Angels within 2624. Bertino tied the game at 26 with an inside hoop and then tie the game at 29 with her second threepoint bomb. The Angels trailed 31-29 at the end of three quarters. With 7:10 remaining, threepoint bomb No. 3 from Bertino would gave the Angels a 32-31 lead. After Butler regained the lead at 33-32, Bertino’s three-point bomb
No. 4 gave the Angels a 35-33 lead with six minutes remaining and gave her 14 straight JCA points. With 5:08 on the clock, Angel super-freshman Jazz Brown’s (16 points, seven rebounds, five steals) old-fashioned three-point play gave the Angels a 38-33 lead. Emotionally charged with the regional championship in their sights, the Angel defense totally suffocated the physically larger Lynx. With 3:03 Brown scored again for a 40-33 Angel lead. Junior Jen Hernandez (two points, six rebounds) two assists, two steals) and Brown finished off the Lynx with free throws to wrap up the regional championship. “Wow. It’s a surreal moment for me from going 0-27 as a freshman to now as a senior winning a Class 2A regional championship,” Bertino said. “Unbelievable. Just like the other night here, in the beginning I was long on my threepoint shots. In the second half I concentrated on the front of the rim and they all went in. We all are really confident that we can go to the sectional next week and win. We are confident that we can go a long-way in this tournament.” With Brown on the bench with two fouls and the Angel offense in disarray, 5-foot-8 junior Emma Jay (seven points, four rebounds) saved the day in the first half. Jay scored five of the seven Angel first-quarter points as Butler

Williams, who works at the Lockport White Oak Library District, took after her father because of the inspiration he gave her, and constantly being accustomed to Hernandez’ work styles. Hernandez, who is the oldest of three sons, said he enjoys writing about him and his families own experiences because just like life, there are ups and downs. “Reading is easy, but I love the communication aspect of it and telling stories of marriage, family, relationships, identity, aging, parents, faith social justice and politics,” he said. “The writing part I also enjoy because even from a young age, I never wanted to be anything else in the world besides a newspaper reporter.” To date, some of Hernandez most popular books are, “Chocolate Cows and Purple Cheese, and other tales from the homefront”, “AbundanceA Collection”, “The Edge of Middlethoughts from the top of the hill”, “Write Where We Are”, “Cheetah Stories- A WriteOn Joliet Anthology” and his new book called “The Acorn Wars”. Throughout the years, Hernandez said although he has a very busy schedule with his writing and Public Relations occupation, family has always been something that has been his first priority. “My family and my life I love very much,” Hernandez said. “I’m a very blessed man to have the opportunities that have come my way, and I couldn’t ask for a better family or life.” Present day, Hernandez and his wife Kellie reside in Plainfield, have two adult daughters and welcomed their first grandchild to the world in 2018. Because Hernandez had to give up his column writing for his job at the Plainfield school district because of past stories he wrote about his current contemporaries, Hernandez is making a stop to a local library for his most recent book, “The Acorn Wars”. From 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28 at the Lockport Branch Library, Hernandez will discuss the book and do a short and entertaining reading from all of his books and he will donate 75 percent of all the book sales back to the White Oak Library District. After the presentation, there will be a question and answer session followed by a book signing. “Anything I can do to help White Oak I’m very fortunate and glad to do,” Hernandez said. “I’ll always love books, writing and reading, and I’ll always try to inspire those around me to do the same, that’s just who I am and who I’ll always be.”

T
he Nature Foundation of Will County expects to double its donation total to the Forest Preserve District in 2020. Last year’s total was $29,000, but this year’s will top $70,000 said Foundation Board Chairwoman Jamie Donovan as she presented a $9,500 check to District staff during the Forest Preserve’s Board of Commissioners meeting on Thursday, February 13. The Foundation’s first donation of 2020 will be used for the following projects: $2,500: The Illinois and Michigan Canal map table exhibit at Four Rivers Environmental Education Center in Channahon. This new map table exhibit will help orient guests to the nearby I&M Canal. $2,000: The “Nature Takes Flight” juried art show and awards at Plum Creek Nature Center in Crete Township. The show runs from March 3 through April 3. $1,500: Education programs supplies. This funding helps offset the cost of purchasing program supplies for two popular in-school offerings,
“Whoose Bones?” and the Winter Bird Feeder Challenge. $3,500: Two bicycle repair stations along regional trails. The stations will be located along the Centennial/ Veterans Memorial Trail at Schneider’s Passage in Romeoville, and the DuPage River Trail at Whalon Lake in Naperville. The stations include tools necessary to perform basic bike repairs. In August, the Foundation announced that it had donated more than $29,000 to the District for conservation, nature education and recreation initiatives in 2019. But the 2020 donation total will be even greater. “Over the last several months, our fundraising and projects committee worked with Forest Preserve staff to identify over $70,000 worth of projects and initiatives for 2020,” Donovan said. “Today, I can tell you that we anticipate that we will be able to meet that need thanks to our amazing donors, event sponsors, supporters and our dedicated Board of Directors.” She also announced that the Foundation will no longer require annual
start-up funding from the Forest Preserve. Donovan also encouraged everyone to attend the “Bringing Nature Home” native plant sale pre-sale event on Friday, May 15, at the Sugar Creek Administration Center in Joliet. “This is our biggest event of the year and it benefits our ability to commit to projects likes these the most,” she said. The pre-sale fundraiser will be followed by a public plant sale on Saturday, May 16, also at Sugar Creek. For plant sale details and to learn more about the Foundation, visit willcountynature.org.
