north s gross leads district 99 state journalism medalists Thirteen students from North High School in Downers Grove and South High School in Downers Grove competed and placed in several categories at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Journalism Competition. Six students earned medals, including North High senior Kate Gross who earned first place in News Writing. “I am so happy for Kate as she is North High’s first state champion in News Writing, a notoriously competitive event,” says North High School English teacher and Omega Newspaper adviser Elizabeth Levin. “I’m not surprised by her win. Ever since Kate joined the journalism program, she has demonstrated a tireless devotion to accuracy in reporting and has held herself to the highest standards.” Congratulations to the following students earning individual state medals: Kate Gross: State Champion in News Writing (North High) Jake Hahn: 5th place in Copy

Editing (South High) Kassem Ossman, Gwen Royle and Sammy Bachara: 5th place in Video News (South High) Claire Valenti: 6th place in Yearbook Caption Writing (South High) Additional competitors from North High were Payton HubbsPlumley and Maddy McGovern; and from South High were Abby Culcasi, Michael Piotrowski, Abby Durkin, Ryan Rosignal and Amanda Despres. “It was really exciting for our students to be able to compete in person again,” says South High English teacher and Blueprint Newspaper adviser Mary Long. “The students worked hard all year learning about journalism, and they all did great at the competition. They were able to meet other students with similar interests and talents. I hope this is a positive experience they will remember forever. They are a talented group of students.”

sheriff dart warns public of phone scam & Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart is warning of a telephone a scam where the caller identifies as a Sheriff’s Office employee and tells victims they’ve missed jury duty or have outstanding citations and must pay money to rectify the situation. The caller states that if the victim makes a payment using Zelle – a money transfer app – the victim can be assigned a judge who can hear their case. An email ad-

dress is provided to the victim to send the payment. The caller uses the name of an actual Sheriff’s Office employee, so an Internet search may make it appear the call is legitimate. But this is a scam. The Sheriff’s Office never calls to ask for payments to be made over the phone. Anyone who believes they have been a victim of this scam is asked to call the Sheriff’s Police
