Walsh will not seek a fifth term Long-time politician will step aside to focus on health

Will County Executive Larry Walsh announced Aug. 15 he will not seek a fifth term next year.

Walsh has been battling prostate cancer in recent years and told the Will County Board his treatment would prevent him from running an effective campaign. “(The) decision is a no-brainer. I have to back from chemo and I’m going to do it,” Walsh said. “And I hate to back away, but I will not be a candidate for Will County Executive in the 2020 election.”

Walsh, who has overseen the board since 2004, intends to serve out the remainder of his term through next December.

An Elwood farmer, Walsh served as a state senator from 1997 to 2004.

During his first term in Springfield he became friends with another new senator, Barack Obama.

While President, Obama on more than one occasion expressed a desire to have his “poker-playing buddy” visit the White House for a game, but it’s unclear if that ever occurred.

Walsh, a Democrat, said he’s always tried to “reach across the aisle” for the county’s benefit.

“We can disagree (politically), but we don’t have to be disagreeable,” Walsh said.

Despite the recession, Will County’s population and development have grown substantially since Walsh has been County Executive. More warehouses and intermodals front highways and truck traffic has increased.

Walsh also targeted the rising heroin deaths by starting the Will County Heroin Education Leads to Preventative Solutions (HELPS) organization.

Author signs books on his trials and tribulations Dale Hansen provides insight to readers in a spiritual way

@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com Dale Hansen has experienced enough in his life to fill a book or two — and that is exactly what he has done.

Although Hansen has had success with his two books “Journey Through the Old Testament” and “One Week at a Time 52 Week Devotional” writing has been a new hobby that he has started rather recently.

Hansen, who stopped by the Book Market store in Crest Hill to sign two of his books, has had a rocky bill of health throughout his entire life.

Hansen has been writing for three years, and the motivation and drive behind his words are from the trials and tribulations him and his family has experienced.

“Both of the books that I wrote are Bible devotions,” Hansen said.

“Because I have Parkinson’s, they’re about how to live and deal with the disease.”

Other significant signs that are common are more significant uncontrollable tremors, but the disorder also commonly causes stiffness or slowing of movement.

Not only has Dale experienced a plethora amount of health issues over the years, but his wife has dealt with issues as well.

“We’ve had infertility when we were first married, a number of different cancer issues through the years, kidney stones, Parkinson’s and that’s why I really wanted to start this a few years ago,” Hansen said. “

While being married more than 40 years, Hansen said there was one group in particular that sparked his interest.

With many different ideas and experiences that Hansen and his family went through, a group called WriteOn in Joliet was the starting point for his career as an author.

“They basically just encouraged people to bring stuff in so people can read it and enjoy it,” Hansen said. “Being retired, it’s been really good being able to do that and let people read and hopefully appreciate a lot of the verses.”

Being a devout follower of God, Hansen said that the book “One Week at a Time 52 Week Devotional” could make people become more knowledgeable on how God uses the writers and people of the Bible to challenge everyone moving forward.

For his other book, “Journey Through the Old Testament”, Hansen wants to get the message across that the book teaches readers lessons through the people of the Bible.

“I enjoy getting calls and emails from people about the books that have a positive response because it means that God’s got me on the right path that I should be on,” Hansen said. “I’m not going to be the best seller of anything like that, but I believe I’m doing the right thing here and people are responding to me in a good way.”

Shorewood schools are back in session Several events happeing across Troy School District

Troy School District 30C, which includes three elementary schools in Shorewood, began the 2019-2020 school year Aug. 19. The district was founded in 1949. “(As always) this will add traffic at each of our seven sites as well as bus traffic on main

and residential streets,” Superintendent Todd Koehl wrote. “Please drive with eyes wide open on the road ahead. Thank you. Our children appreciate it.”

The district will have institutes this year on Oct. 11 and Feb. 28.

Parent-Teacher conferences will be held Nov. 25 and 26 - which allow students the entire week of Thanksgiving without classes. Troy will also have early dismissals Sept. 17, Oct. 31, Dec. 6, Jan. 17, Feb. 14 and April 21.

Cronin Picture Day is Aug. 21, Hofer Picture Day is Aug. 23 and Troy Shorewood Picture Day is Sept. 5.

Regular lunch prices this year will

be $2.85 and milk will cost 45 cents.

The Troy district, which also includes schools in Joliet and Plainfield, has approximately 4,5000 students and 600 employees.

At Troy Shorewood, the district’s oldest school, students in pre-school through Fourth Grade follow the Pledge of Allegiance each morning with “The Shorewood Promise.”

DAVE SAYS: Why do I need a will if I m young with little wealth?

DEAR DAVE: Why do I need a will if I’m still young and haven’t acquired a lot of wealth?

LAURA DEAR LAURA: In a case like yours, you don’t need a complicated will. But you do need an inexpensive, basic will. The larger and more complicated your estate is, the more you’d spend on estate planning and a will in order to ensure everything is properly addressed — and to keep the government’s hands off everything.

Let’s say you’re in your early- to mid-20s and single. You have a car and a bank account, and that’s it. In this kind of scenario, it’s going to be easy to work through your estate. But it’s going to take your parents — or whoever’s left — a whole lot longer to get those few simple transactions taken care of if you don’t have a will in place.

The other thing you’ll always want to have in your will package is a health care power of attorney directive. This includes things like who’s going to make medical decisions for you if you’re unable to make decisions for yourself. As a part of this, you’d want to fill out the paperwork on whether to disconnect life support systems in the event of a coma. These things aren’t fun to think about, but doing it will take a huge burden off the people you love. And all this becomes even more important if you have children, because the state will step in and decide what happens to them if you don’t.

Having these things laid out ahead of time, and sharing them with your family and close friends, is a very thoughtful and mature thing to do for those who would be left behind in the event of your death. They’re already going to be distraught and grieving, and you don’t want to make it worse by leaving them with a lot of important, difficult decisions to make.

Bolingbrook s Borland looks to lead No. 5 ranked Ohio State to a National Championship

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com Heading into his junior season at Ohio State University, Bolingbrook graduate Tuf Borland is excited for the changes on the horizon.

Ryan Day takes over for Urban Meyer as head coach of the Buckeyes and that means a new look on both sides of the football.

“Sometimes change is a good thing. You are going to see a lot of guys that are excited to be out there and excited to be playing again and I think our performance will show,” Borland said. “There is a lot of expectation here and we are expected to live up to that. We talk about next man up and always being prepared and we have a team full of guys who can do that.

“Anytime there is a new coaching staff, there are changes and that will be evident. I don’t want to get into specifics or scheme, but it is going to allow each of us players to use our athleticism and play football like we know how.”

After redshirting his freshman season, Borland has played in all 28 games the past two seasons, despite suffering an Achilles tendon injury during spring practice. Last season he started 11 games and finished third on the team with 67 tackles, including nine tackles for loss. His performance earned him honorable mention All-Big Ten. Borland has been a two-time captain for the Buckeyes and is one of only two returning captains

from last season. If selected by his teammates again, the middle linebacker would be only the secondever three-time Ohio State captain and first from the defensive side of the ball, joining only former quarterback J.T. Barrett.

At the end of this season, Borland has a decision to make – with one year of eligibility remaining and with graduate classes already under his belt can stay at Ohio State and continue his graduate degree and play football, he can leave college and head into his chosen profession or try his hand at playing professional football.

While he has options at season’s end, Borland said he will focus on that after he helps the Buckeyes compete for a Big Ten and NCAA National Championship. Ohio State is ranked No. 5 in the nation in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll and Associated Press ranikings.

“Coming in early gave me some advantages academically and I will graduate this fall while taking graduate level courses. I haven’t really given any thought to my future,” Borland said. “I would like to play, but right now I am just focused on this season. When I came here I was looking to provide myself with the best options for my future, whether I am lucky enough to keep playing or get ready for work and life after football.

“The biggest thing for me this year is putting everything I have into these guys and this team and if we have everyone buy in, there are no limits to what this team can

The possibility that this is his last at Ohio State will have Borland taking time to enjoy the special

moments this season.

“That first year on campus seems like it goes by pretty slow and then now you look back I can’t believe I have been here going into my fourth season,” he said.

“It goes by pretty fast. You have to soak it all in.”
