Freedom of Speech Speech contest on U.S. Constitution being held for junior high students By Debbie Lively Staff Reporter
T
he local American Legion is hoping to broaden student awareness about the U.S. Constitution by holding a speech contest. Area junior high students are being encouraged to enter the American Legion 7th and 8th Grade Speech contest. The competition will be held on April 6 at 6 p.m. at the Westmont Park District Senior Center, located at 75 East Richmond Street. “The purpose of the competition is to
broaden the students’ understanding about the Constitution,” said Raymond Wood, commander of American Legion 338. For the contest, students must base their speech on a phrase taken from the U.S. Constitution, and will have five minutes to deliver their speech. They will be graded on elements like originality, voice and diction. The contest is limited to two or three students from area junior high schools in Westmont and Darien. A local winner will be chosen to compete in a county competition. The winner of the contest will then face-off at a regional competition, followed by a state contest.
The county final will be held on Sunday, April 29 at the Glen Ellyn Public Library, at 400 Duane Street. The county competition winner will receive a $100 prize, followed by a 2nd place prize of $75, and a 3rd place prize of $50. This is the first time that the Legion has held a competition like this in about seven years. “We’re looking forward to it. Hopefully we’ll have a lot of kids show up,” said Wood. There are about 13 American Legions in DuPage County, and about 105 members are affiliated with American Legion 338. dlively@buglenewspapers.com
