About Bloomsburg University Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.
The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television. The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.
Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.
> Enrollment— Total enrollment is now 9,400, with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate significantly higher than the national average. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-traditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen fields. > Degrees— Bloomsburg University offers 63 baccalaureate degrees, 18 master’s degrees and a joint doctoral degree in elementary education in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania. > Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students receive some form of financial aid; average amount of aid is $10,000 per year.
The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, WilkesBarre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.
> Cost—About $7,223 per semester for Pennsylvania residents (tuition, fees, typical room and meal plans), $11,635 for non-residents. > Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees, Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administration, Student Life and University Advancement. > School Colors, Mascot— The school colors, originally “lemon and garnet,” have been maroon and gold since the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the Husky became the school mascot when a dog owned by a faculty member accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the South Pole.

- Outlook PREVIEW Young and talented. These two words best describe the 2010-11 Bloomsburg University men’s basketball team. With six upperclassmen returning in addition to bringing in eight newcomers, fifth-year head coach John Sanow believes that the Huskies are poised to take the next step and get back to the postseason for the first time since the 2001-02 season. “We have a group of hard-working and talented young men who challenged themselves over the summer to improve their games. They are ready to take the next step,” Sanow says. After missing the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East playoffs by a game last season, Sanow, his coaching staff, and players are geared to make another run at this goal. After going 12-14 overall and 6-8 in the conference, Sanow understands the expectations are high this season for a team that was so close a year ago. “This season our coaching staff feels the experience of our returning players along with our newcomers will prove to be a successful combination,” Sanow notes. “We were close last year. We feel the experience gained in all those close games should really help us in moving forward.” With a 20-win season and a conference championship in mind, making adjustments to replace three graduating seniors from a year ago will be a top priority for Sanow. The Huskies lost a big piece of last season’s offense with the graduation of All-PSAC East second-team selection Ruben Britt. In addition to losing Britt, Bloomsburg also needs to fill the shoes of Adon El and Greg Elliott. Offensively, the trio of players totaled 36 percent of the Bloomsburg scoring last season.
BACK COURT Two upperclassmen will be vying for playing time at point guard in 2010-11, with junior classmates Trevon Johnson and Jesse Betar looking to lead the offense. Johnson finished second in points with 11.6 points per game and led the team with 61 steals in 26 starts last season. In 17 of his starts, Johnson scored in double figures. This year, Sanow sees Johnson playing a crucial role. “Trevon excels in an up-tempo style of play,” Sanow comments. “He can really push the ball in transition and score in the open floor. He also excels on the defensive end, leading our team in steals a year ago. He will be a player that the rest of the team looks to as a leader.” Betar, who played in 23 games, started 13 times a year ago. “Jesse is a good leader on and off the court,” Sanow describes. “He brings lots of experience at the
point-guard position.” Dishing out 47 assists last season and scoring in double figures on four different occasions, Betar is the type of player that can space the floor with his perimeter shooting and make his teammates better with his passing skills. Also in the mix will be freshman Antoine EllisonLove. The 5-9 guard averaged 16 points, five assists, and five steals per game as a senior at Loyalsock. “Antoine is a very quick and explosive player who also does well in the open floor,” Sanow says. “He does a great job at pressuring the ball defensively.” At the two wing positions, junior Jordan Wartman, freshman Kendal Smith, redshirt freshman Dontahe Jordan, redshirt freshman Lorenzo Christmas, and redshirt freshman Nasir Jones all look to play valuable roles for Sanow. Wartman, who played in 18 games last season, was a solid player off the bench. Both Jordan and Smith look to make an immediate impact as first-year players, as the coaching staff has high hopes for these talented freshmen. “Dontahe gained valuable experience at practice last season as a redshirt,” Sanow states. He is a player who has good shooting and passing skills; he is athletic and is a good scorer in transition. Smith, a talented freshman from Thomas Stone High School, led his team to two state championship appearances, “Kendal is long and athletic; a young man who works very hard on his game and loves to compete.” Christmas will also try and step in during his first season in maroon and gold. “Lorenzo is our best perimeter shooter; he will help significantly in raising our three-point shooting percentage as a team,” Sanow comments. Bloomsburg finished with a .269 (84-of-312) shooting percentage from behind the arc last season. Another young player competing for time will be Nasir Jones. A redshirt freshman last season at Millersville, Jones averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds as a senior at the Franklin Learning Center. “He is very athletic and works hard on both ends of the court,” Sanow describes.

FRONT COURT The Huskies return plenty of talent at the forward and center positions, led by junior center Larry Webster III. Last season Webster averaged 10.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in his 26 starts, recording five doubledouble performances. He led the Huskies with 61 blocks, placing him sixth on the all-time blocks list in program history with 95. He is just 36 blocks from breaking the all-time mark of 130 set by Lee Gump in 1996. Sanow can see Webster’s improvements during practices, knowing that he worked hard during the offseason on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. “Larry has worked hard to develop his back to the basket moves and his overall offensive game,” Sanow comments. “Husky Nation will be happy to see that he is much improved offensively and that his strengths at rebounding and shot-blocking have also been taken to another level.” After a solid sophomore season, classmate Trenton Epps also returns for the Huskies. Epps finished the 200910 season averaging 4.3 points per game. In addition, the 6-6 forward finished third on the team with 103 rebounds. Epps is a player that greatly improved over the summer months on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. He is capable of knocking down the 15-foot jump shot and taking it strong to the basket. Junior transfer John Schwarz will make an immediate impact for the Huskies this season. A year ago, the 6-8 Schwarz led NJCAA-affiliated Harford Community College with 14 points per contest and redshirted with Division I Mount St. Mary’s during the 2008-09 season. Sanow has plenty of confidence in Schwarz, believing he could be a player that will be getting the ball in critical situations. “John’s skill set offensively, his intensity on the floor, along with his experience will make him a go-to player for this young team.” The lone senior on the squad, Earl Knight, will also give Sanow another versatile forward who should make an impact on both ends of the floor this year. Knight played in 25 games in 2009-10, recording 68 points along with 54 boards. “Earl brings a lot of energy and intensity to the floor,” Sanow notes. “He works hard on every play.” After redshirting last season due to injury, sophomore forward Ronnie Benson returns at forward. In the 2008-09 season, Benson averaged 7.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 21 starts. Two redshirt freshmen will also provide talent for Sanow in Armand Leaks and Moustapha Noumbissi. Leaks totaled 709 points and 850 rebounds during his playing time at The Shipley School. Noumbissi averaged 11.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks per game as a
senior at Delaware County Christian School. “Armand and Moustapha are two talented frontcourt players who are amongst the hardest workers on the team,” Sanow states. “With their work ethic and their willingness to learn, their best years are ahead of them.”
OVERALL “This is the best I felt since I have been here at Bloomsburg in terms of where the state of our program is at,” Sanow states. “From our coaching staff, to our upperclassmen, to our incoming recruiting class, this season has all the pieces in place for us to make a serious run at the playoffs.” In order to make that playoff push, the Huskies will have to play well during conference action. Sanow thinks that conference play will be very competitive again in 2010-11.

Nelson Field House
The Nelson Field House, located on Bloomsburg University’s upper campus, serves as home for most of the university’s indoor athletic events. The facility, constructed in 1971, recently underwent a $13.4 million dollar facelift. Among the renovations to the field house are a new bleacher system for the main gym area, a new scoreboard, a new wrestling room on the lower level of the facility, a new and expanded press box, dedicated locker rooms for each sport, including an expanded football locker room, improved office space and additional storage space. In addition the pool area has been completely renovated with improved lighting, new bleachers, new starting blocks, improved timing system and record board. The project also provided for enhancements to both the upper and lower entrances that will showcase the awards the teams have won over the last three decades. The project was completed in August of 2009.

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded adding full-time members Gannon and Mercyhurst, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: the largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. The membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA teams and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Nearly 1/3 of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.
