About Bloomsburg University Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.
The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television. The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.
Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.
> Enrollment— Total enrollment is now 9,500, with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate significantly higher than the national average. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-traditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen fields. > Degrees— Bloomsburg University offers 63 baccalaureate degrees, 18 master’s degrees and a joint doctoral degree in audiology in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania. > Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students receive some form of financial aid; average amount of aid is $10,000 per year.
The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, WilkesBarre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.
> Cost—About $7,223 per semester for Pennsylvania residents (tuition, fees, typical room and meal plans), $11,635 for non-residents. > Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees, Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administration, Student Life and University Advancement. > School Colors, Mascot— The school colors, originally “lemon and garnet,” have been maroon and gold since the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the Husky became the school mascot when a dog owned by a faculty member accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the South Pole.

2011-12 Outlook The men’s basketball program has set high goals this season after missing the conference playoffs last year by a single game. Returning four starters from a year ago, the Huskies have their eyes set on winning the PSAC East and hosting the conference championships at the Nelson Field House. Head coach John Sanow enters his sixth season with the Huskies after leading Bloomsburg to a 7-7 conference record a year ago. Sanow will count largely on his returning players to step-up as the Huskies bring back 12 players from the 2010-11 squad. “We feel good about having four starters back and our depth this season will also be a strength” states Sanow, he continues “we have guys that can come off the bench and provide us with strong minutes and we have guys coming in who can contribute right away.”
RETURNERS
PSAC East Freshman of the Year and All-PSAC East first time honoree Dontahe Jordan returns for his sophomore campaign. Of the entire first team honorees, Jordan stood as the sole underclassman to earn the award. As a freshman he was just shy of averaging a doubledouble as he led the Huskies in points per game (15.8) and rebounds per game (9.1). Developing into one of the better rebounders in the league, Jordan will look to improve on getting better in all aspects of his game, especially on the defensive end. Senior guard Trevon Johnson will be back after earning All-PSAC East second team honors. A player that has earned the respect of coaches and players from around the conference, Johnson will again be the floor general as he remains at the point guard position. “He’s really improved each year, improved his overall ability to run the team and has developed a better perimeter shot” remarks Sanow. As a junior Johnson was second on the team in points per game with 15 and led the team with 72 assists. Larry Webster III and John Schwarz enter their senior seasons with the Huskies. Webster, a talented and athletic post-player, will be counted upon night in and night out for his inside scoring ability and rebounding. He was third on last year’s team with 12.2 points per game. Schwarz started in 15 of 26 games played during the 2010-11 season. A strong player who has the ability to play both forward and center, has range from 15 feet and can score from inside as well.
Back for the 2011-12 season after finishing fourth in scoring for the Huskies last year is sophomore guard Lorenzo Christmas. Making vast improvements throughout the 2010-11 season, Christmas had several big games for the Huskies including a 30 point performance in a 92-88 win over Kutztown. Christmas’ defensive efforts will be an area of improvement this year. Junior shooting guard Jordan Wartman will be back this season for the Huskies. A high energy player with a lot of enthusiasm, Wartman will be counted on to provide a spark off the bench for Bloomsburg with his shot making ability. Jamar Smack returns for his junior year at the backup point guard position, although he does have experience at the two spot. “He’s a coach on the floor for us who gets us into our offense and does a lot of the little things that help us to be a better basketball team” states Sanow. After missing all of last season and half of his freshman year with injury, Ed Hall returns with the Huskies in 2011-12. Hall is long, athletic, and talented. He has the ability to score the ball in the paint as well as on the perimeter. “He’s a player we are very excited to have back with us. He’s going to be a big part of what we do and can be special for us this year” said coach Sanow. As a freshman Hall was Bloomsburg’s leader in points and rebounds prior to his injury. Sophomores Nasir Jones, Arman Leaks, Moustapha Noumbissi, and Kendal Smith all return. Leaks is back after appearing in 13 games for the Huskies last season. He will be counted on to provide defensive relief in the post for Bloomsburg. Jones, an athletic yet undersized four-man, will look to create match-up problems for defenses with his ability to draw bigger players out on the perimeter and shoot over smaller defenders. Noumbissi returns after a good summer of training. The 6-8 center has improved in many areas of his game and will see minutes in the paint. After improvements to his ball handling and shooting skills, Smith will look to add quality minutes for the Huskies. Standing at 6-4, look for this athletic guard to contribute on the defensive side of the ball as well.

NEWCOMERS
Bloomsburg welcomes five new players to the basketball program. One player not so unfamiliar on the sidelines this season will be Mike Varanavage. Varanavage spent the last four seasons with the Huskies football team, earning 2010 PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year honors. On the hardwood, Varanavage will provide tremendous effort in the defensive category and also provides perimeter shooting for the Huskies. Transfers Nnamdi Njoku and Andrew Morgan begin their first seasons with the Huskies. Njoku comes to Bloomsburg after two years at Lackawanna Community College. “He’s one of the hardest workers on the team, always give 100 percent when he’s out on the floor” stated Sanow. A strong defensive player who is learning Bloomsburg’s system will boost BU’s talent level.
OVERALL
The Huskies open the year by taking on Wheeling Jesuit and Pittsburgh at Johnstown in the UPJ PSAC/WVIAC Challenge. Last season Bloomsburg was hit with injuries early in the season, provoking a slow start to the year but this season the Huskies hope for better fortunes. “We are focused on starting off the season on a high note by playing well at Pitt-Johnstown. We are looking to gain confidence and build from that” states Sanow. Coach Sanow goes on “We feel our preseason schedule is the best it’s been since I’ve been here and we are very excited about it. We are playing everyone on the Western side of the PSAC. Our early schedule will prepare our team for January/February when we go up against our Eastern conference opponents. We can’t wait to get started.”
Morgan is a transfer from Westfield State University where he earned MASCAC Rookie of the Year honors. “He has a good knowledge of the game and doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. We are looking for him to improve and get better within our system” said Sanow. Zach Sheetz begins his first season as a member of the men’s basketball team after spending last season as the Huskies team manager. A smart player who has a great shooter’s touch may see time against zone defenses to knock down perimeter shots. Highly touted freshman Wes Lyons comes to Bloomsburg from Millville High School. During his time at Millville he racked up 1,900 career points as well as earning allstate honors. “Wes is a very talented young player, he can shoot from the perimeter and can go inside as well” said Sanow. Look for big things from Lyons during the 201112 season.

Nelson Field House
The Nelson Field House, located on Bloomsburg University’s upper campus, serves as home for most of the university’s indoor athletic events. The facility, constructed in 1971, recently underwent a $13.4 million dollar facelift. Among the renovations to the field house are a new bleacher system for the main gym area, a new scoreboard, a new wrestling room on the lower level of the facility, a new and expanded press box, dedicated locker rooms for each sport, including an expanded football locker room, improved office space and additional storage space. In addition the pool area has been completely renovated with improved lighting, new bleachers, new starting blocks, improved timing system and record board. The project also provided for enhancements to both the upper and lower entrances that will showcase the awards the teams have won over the last three decades. The project was completed in August of 2009.

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded adding full-time members Gannon and Mercyhurst, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: the largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. The membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA teams and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Nearly 1/3 of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.

SANOW
Head Coach Sixth Season Indiana (Pa.) ’87
In 2011-12, John Sanow begins his sixth season as head coach of the Huskies. Sanow looks to overcome the one-game deficits that have held his team out of the playoffs the previous two years. Overall, Sanow has 22 years of experience with previous coaching stops at the University of Vermont along with Division II schools Gannon University and PittJohnstown. He also spent 11 years as an assistant coach at Division I St. Francis of Pennsylvania. In 2010-11, the Huskies narrowly missed the playoffs for the second year in-a-row by one game. Sanow’s team finished 7-7 in the PSAC East and 11-15 overall. He helped coach the 2010-11 PSAC East Freshman of the Year in Dontahe Jordan and two PSAC East All-Conference players in Jordan and Trevon Johnson. In his first season with the Huskies, Sanow guided the Huskies to a mark of 13-14, an improvement of seven wins from the previous season and the first time since 2001-02 that the team reached double figures in wins.
Sanow won his first six games as coach of Bloomsburg and had the team nationally ranked for the first time in several years. He also closed out the season winning four of the final five games and just missed out on a berth in the PSAC East playoffs. Also, the eight wins the Huskies recorded at the Nelson Field House were the most since the team won 10 in 2000-01. A native of Windber, Pa., who is well-connected in basketball in the East, Sanow is a 1987 graduate of Indiana (Pa.) University. After transferring from Clarion University in 1984, he led IUP in scoring and was a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference All-Conference First Team selection in 1986. He also set numerous three-point shooting records for IUP. At Vermont in 2005-06, he was part of a new coaching staff that led the least-experienced team in the nation in D-I (no seniors, two juniors, five sophomores and seven freshmen) to the America East Championship game for the fourth straight season. The sixth-seeded Catamounts (13-17, 7-9 America East) topped #3 Boston University and #2 Binghamton before falling at top-seeded Albany in the title game. While at St. Francis (Pa.), he was an integral part of the Red Flash winning the 1991 Northeast Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Men’s
Basketball Championship. While at St. Francis, he coached Mike Iuzzolino, who went on to the NBA for the Dallas Mavericks. In 1992, he also was an assistant coach for the Panama Men’s Olympic Team in its attempt to qualify for the Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Sanow is the 21st coach in the 109th season of Bloomsburg University men’s basketball competition.
