About Bloomsburg University

Bloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education. Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 160 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

> Enrollment— Total enrollment is now 9,500, with an average incoming SAT of 1070 and class rank in the upper 25 percent; Bloomsburg admits one in seven applicants and has a four-year retention rate significantly higher than the national average. About 60 percent are women and 10 percent are non-traditional. About 90 percent of Bloomsburg graduates are quickly placed in their chosen fields. > Degrees— Bloomsburg University offers 63 baccalaureate degrees, 18 master’s degrees and a joint doctoral degree in elementary education in cooperation with Indiana University of Pennsylvania. > Financial Aid— About 70 percent of all students receive some form of financial aid; average amount of aid is $10,000 per year.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television. The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town. The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, WilkesBarre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

> Cost—About $7,223 per semester for Pennsylvania residents (tuition, fees, typical room and meal plans), $11,635 for non-residents. > Faculty— With approximately 1,000 employees, Bloomsburg University has 383 full-time faculty, 70 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees and 72 percent of whom are tenured. The staff is organized into four divisions: Academic Affairs, Administration, Student Life and University Advancement. > School Colors, Mascot— The school colors, originally “lemon and garnet,” have been maroon and gold since the 1920s. In the early 1930s, the Husky became the school mascot when a dog owned by a faculty member accompanied Adm. Richard E. Byrd on an expedition to the South Pole.

2011-12 Outlook

Unfinished business will be the theme for the Bloomsburg University women’s basketball team this year after missing the NCAA tournament a year ago, despite a 22-6 record and reaching the conference semi-finals. The goal for this year’s team is simple: get to the NCAA tournament.

The 2011-12 Huskies will be led by reigning PSAC Eastern Coach of the Year Bill Cleary, who enters his fourth year at the helm of the women’s basketball program. Cleary has rebuilt the women’s team from their 8-19 overall record prior to his arrival, to a dominant force in the PSAC East. Experience will be a strength of this year’s team as they return the entire squad from a successful season a year ago. “We are really excited about the potential we have but the whole program feels that there is still work to be done” states Cleary. He goes on “our players have been preparing all summer long. A lot of players have gotten a lot better since last year because of preparation. There is still a lot of work to be done but we are on the right track.”

Juniors Lauren Ellis and Alyssa Flanagan will also be back for the Huskies after concluding great sophomore campaigns. Leading the team in blocks last season with 27, Ellis will again be a force for the Huskies in the paint and will look to provide valuable minutes again this year. Flanagan is back after starting in all 28 games, one of only two players to do so last season. “We refer to her as the glue to this team” says Cleary, he goes on “she is a true leader and a great motivator who knows her role this year and has worked tirelessly this summer on her shot and defense.” Last season she was fourth in the PSAC in assists per game with 4.8. Finishing third on the team in points per game (12.1), Kayla Oxenrider will be a key ingredient this year for the Huskies. Referred to as Bloomsburg’s “X” factor, Oxenrider will be counted upon to consistently score points for the Huskies in order to reach the next level this season.

RETURNERS Division II Basketball Bulletin All-American honorable mention honoree and 2010-11 PSAC East Athlete of the Year, Kelsey Gallagher returns for her senior campaign. “She has become more of a vocal leader for us, which we have been pushing for because the team listens and follows her” Cleary states. A leader by example as well, the senior guard started in all 28 games averaging 16.6 points per game, 5.9 rebounds, 1.9 steals, 3.5 assists, and rejected 16 shots. Look for her to continue to be the key factor for the Huskies success this year. Dana Wieller returns at guard after earning AllPSAC first team honors a year ago. An incredible sharp-shooter with great offensive skills, who finished second in the PSAC in three pointers made per game (3.3) and fourth in points per game (17.8). Making defense a priority this summer, Wieller has worked hard on becoming an all-around player for the upcoming season.

2011-12 Outlook Sophomores Catherine Noack and Danielle Derr are both back providing depth for the Huskies. According to Coach Cleary “Noack is our most improved player from one season to the next. She’s elevated her game to more than just an outside shooter.” Cleary continues “She understands what her role is and has embraced it, and has become the player we thought she could be.”

Rookies Maggie Borski and Marla Simmons provide depth for the Huskies at the guard position. Borski is a one-two combo guard who is able to penetrate defenses and is able to make good decisions while doing so. Simmons has had a good preseason thus far. A strong defender and a versatile offensive threat, Simmons will pose problems for opposing defenses.

Derr returns as a powerful post presence for the Huskies with a nice touch from the outside. A tough player to guard, Derr has the ability to postup guards as well as the ability to take bigger players outside.

Colleen Nosovitch joins the Huskies after spending a year with the Spartans of UNC Greensboro. Nosovitch is an inside player who can step out and hit the three, but is also very strong underneath.

Brianna Dudeck is also back for her second year with the basketball program. “Her strength is her speed; she is one of the quickest guards in our conference” Cleary remarks. After a year of collegiate ball, this speedy guard will have a better understanding of how her quickness fits into the Huskies game-plan.

OVERALL

Other returners include Lauren Biczelewski, Sydney Mallory, and Courtney Nyce. Biczewleski saw limited action last season but will provide the Huskies with her efforts on the boards. Mallory, also a good rebounder, will look to provide Bloomsburg with quality minutes. Nyce played in 25 games last year and with her inside-outside ability, she will surely create match-up problems for opposing defenses this season.

NEWCOMERS The Huskies welcome five new faces this year, four freshmen and one transfer. Forwards Denali Althouse and Adreana Sadowski will look to contribute in their rookie seasons. Althouse is an athletic wing player who can be an inside-outside forward, while Sadowski provides the Huskies with another defensive presence down low with her shot blocking ability.

“You can tell that there’s a positive feeling in the locker room and of unfinished business” stated Cleary. “This team is the most dangerous when they are playing with a chip on their shoulder and there will always be a constant reminder that we got left out last year. So our attitude this season is let’s not leave it in someone else’s hands, let’s take care of it ourselves.” The Huskies open the 2011-12 season by hitting the road to take on Division I Penn State in an exhibition game on Saturday, November 5th at 2:00 p.m. “For us I don’t think you can open the season against a better opponent. Traditionally they are a strong team and this year they bring everyone back” states Cleary. Coach Cleary continues “They can beat you in so many ways, but it will be a great test for us because we want to challenge ourselves and this is a great challenge for us. We are going to see how we handle this challenge, how we handle their outside shooting, their quickness, and inside presence. The PSAC has a number of ways to beat you as well so this is a great test for us to get prepared for our rugged schedule.”

Nelson Field House

The Nelson Field House, located on Bloomsburg University’s upper campus, serves as home for most of the university’s indoor athletic events. The facility, constructed in 1971, recently underwent a $13.4 million dollar facelift. Among the renovations to the field house are a new bleacher system for the main gym area, a new scoreboard, a new wrestling room on the lower level of the facility, a new and expanded press box, dedicated locker rooms for each sport, including an expanded football locker room, improved office space and additional storage space. In addition the pool area has been completely renovated with improved lighting, new bleachers, new starting blocks, improved timing system and record board. The project also provided for enhancements to both the upper and lower entrances that will showcase the awards the teams have won over the last three decades. The project was completed in August of 2009.

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded adding full-time members Gannon and Mercyhurst, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: the largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. The membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Nearly 1/3 of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.

Prep/High School • Averaged 14.6 points, 10.1 rebounds and four blocks per game as a senior • First-Team Division III Sophomore, Junior and Senior years • Earned United States Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete Award and team MVP
