Stutzman has guided the Huskies to a record of 64-46-1 in his six years and has coached three NCAA Division I All-Americans, six Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) champions, 56 EWL placewinners and 23 NCAA Division I national qualifiers. Twice Stutzman has earned the EWL Coach of the Year honor as well as producing the 2007 EWL and PSAC Freshman of the Year, the 2009 EWL Championship’s Outstanding Wrestler and the 2011 PSAC Freshman of the Year. A year ago Stutzman led the Huskies to a record of 14-6 and finished third at the EWL Championships. The 14 wins were the most for the program since the 1990-91 season and included wins over Penn, North Carolina State, Northern Iowa and Buffalo. At the EWL championships Sutzman led the Huskies to a third place finish, while qualifying two wrestlers for the NCAA championships, including EWL-champion Mike Dessino. Stutzman was honored by his fellow coaches at the end of the season by being named the EWL Coach of the Year. In 2009-10 Stutzman led the Huskies to a record of 10-8, which included an appearance at the NWCA National Duals for the first time in 20 years. 2011-12 Huskies Wrestling
2011-12 Preview
His reputation around the country and world as head coach is growing each year, but yet Bloomsburg University head coach John Stutzman never stops working. If you see him after a practice, he is more than likely drenched in sweat. If you see him at a match, he is yelling instructions to his wrestlers. He knows how hard it is to be successful in the sport and knows that he has the guys who have what it takes to succeed at the Division One level of wrestling. That’s why the Huskies are a program gaining more respect year after year and why Stutzman earned EWL coach of the Year honors in 2010-11. “We have a very good group of wrestlers who are working hard,” said Stutzman. “We won 14 matches a year ago and wrestled every one of our opponents hard. That’s only because we work hard day in and day out to get better.” The Huskies lineup will be as deep and talented as he has been able to put out on the mat since his taking over as head coach seven years ago. So you’ve got to believe him and when he talks. “We have a very talented lineup this year led by some very good veterans in Mike Dessino, Frank Hickman and Zac Walsh,” said Stutzman. “They have worked extremely hard to become very good wrestlers. We will need them to step up and lead us against one of the tougher schedules in the country and also teach our younger guys what it takes to be successful at this level.” WEIGHT-BY-WEIGHT 125 The Huskies have a very good one in Sean Boylan returning at this weight class. Boylan was third at EWL’s, won the PSAC Rookie of the Year award and was named to the Amateur Wrestling News All-Rookie team, while winning 20 matches. Behind Boylan the Huskies will look to Elliot Zackoski or Dereck Enders. 133 Nick Wilcox is a returning starter for the Huskies at this weight. A year ago Wilcox finished sixth at the EWL championships, won a PSAC title and in the off-season was a FILA Junior Freestyle All-American. Behind Wilcox will be two good ones in Jeremiah Biddle, named one of the team’s captains, and Craig Barker giving the Huskies great depth. 141 Last year’s starter at this weight Derek Shingara will be taking a red-shirt year. But the Huskies have two solid guys ready to step in. Kurtis Becker is a transfer from Liberty University with Matt Rappo, a true freshman who was fourth in the PIAA championships last year. The duo will likely split time at the weight. Dan Gaylord and Matt Hicks will also compete for mat time at this weight. 149 This is another weight class where the Huskies have depth. Josh Roosa battled through some injuries last year and was fifth at the EWL Championships. Competing with Roosa for time will be Bryce Busler, who was a runner-up at the University National Freestyle Championships. Both are wrestling well and will be in the lineup. 157 Frank Hickman, one of the Huskies captains, will lead this weight class. A year ago Hickman turned in a great season finishing second in the EWL, took third at the PSAC championships, was an NCAA qualifier where he picked up two wins and finished with 27 wins on the season. He starts the pre-season ranked in the top 20 of several polls. Behind Hickman will be sophomore Mike Testen (Sayre/Athens). 165 This will be a strong weight class for the Huskies led by Chris Smith, Josh Veltre and Kevin Hartnett. Smith came on strong for the Huskies last season posting 13 wins, while Veltre was fifth at EWL’s, second at PSAC’s and had a couple of wins over ranked opponents. Behind those is Hartnett who won 27 matches wrestling unattached.

2011-12 Preview 174 Mike Dessino had one of those years that any coach can be proud of. Quietly he put together a 25-win season highlighted by winning both the EWL and PSAC titles at his weight class earning his first trip to the NCAA championships where he won one match. He later went on to earn All-American honors at the University Nationals Free Style championships. This season Dessino has been named a captain and will be called upon to be a leader. Behind Dessino is Sam Shirey who won 11 matches as a red-shirt last year and in someone who has made leaps and bounds as a wrestler, while Garret Vandemark adds depth. 184 Losing Nate Graham to graduation was a big loss for the Huskies, but a couple of guys will be battling to fill those shoes. Red-shirt freshman Nate Roonan and true freshman Mike Mirra will both see time. Roonan has gotten better over the off-season, while Mirra posted a high school record of 113-35 with 46 falls and was a two-time Class “AAA” state qualifier. Also look for Mike Labell and Luke Deluise to provide depth. 197 The Huskies have a good one leading the way at this weight class. Richard Perry was fifth at EWL’s last year as a red-shirt freshman winning 14 matches, including victories over nationally ranked John Hall of Boston University and Alex Thomas of Clarion. Perry also spent part of the summer working out at the Olympic Training Center. When Perry is not wrestling look for Nate Roonan to bump up to this weight class. 285 Zac Walsh leads the way for the Huskies at 285 and is coming off a very good season in which he won 19 matches. Walsh has worked extremely hard and has gotten quicker and stronger each year and is ready to be a leader for the team after being named captain. For the first time Walsh will have a training partner as Justin Grant transfers to Bloomsburg from Kutztown. “The guys have been working very hard all year round,” said Stutzman.”They have seen that hard works pays off and they want even more. If we wrestle to our capabilities we can certainly have a few EWL champions and compete for All-American honors at NCAA’s.”

National Wrestling Hall of Fame
The National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum held its annual induction ceremony on May 31, 2008 with former Bloomsburg University great Ricky Bonomo ‘92 one of the four inductees for 2008. Bonomo was the greatest wrestler in the history of Bloomsburg University. For three straight years 1985-87, Bonomo won all of the major events on the schedule, capturing the NCAA Div. I title, along with the Eastern Wrestling League EWL title and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference PSAC title at 118 pounds. He was named the EWL and PSAC Wrestler of the Year all three of those seasons. Ricky’s career record was a stellar 116-12-3. Ricky and his brother Rocky were the first twins to win Pennsylvania state titles side-by-side in 36 years when they won Class AA titles for Lake Lehman High in 1981, wrestling for the legendary Floyd “Shorty” Hitchcock. Rocky was also an All-American for Bloomsburg, making the Bonomo brothers the most feared lightweight tandem in college wrestling at the time. Joining Bonomo in the 2008 inductee class were Mike Houck of Victoria, Minn., Wayne Martin of Tulsa, Okla. and Bobby Weaver of Easton, Pa.

Eastern Wrestling League
Since the Eastern Wrestling League was formed in 1976, Bloomsburg has enjoyed much success, both as a team and individually. The Huskies won the team championship in 1981 and 1993, and individually, Bloomsburg wrestlers have compiled 35 titles. In addition to Bloomsburg, the league includes Clarion, Cleveland State, Edinboro, Lock Haven, Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Bloomsburg wrestlers hold three of the four fastest EWL tournament fall times. Heavyweight Mel Sharp holds the record with an 18-second pin in 1979, while Al McCollum, a 1982 title-winner, recorded a 36-second fall in 1981. In 1977, Leszek Radon pinned an opponent in 39 seconds.

Nelson Field House
The Nelson Field House, located on Bloomsburg University’s upper campus, serves as home for most of the university’s indoor athletic events. The facility, constructed in 1971, recently underwent a $13.4 million dollar facelift. Among the renovations to the field house are a new bleacher system for the main gym area, a new scoreboard, a new wrestling room on the lower level of the facility, a new and expanded press box, dedicated locker rooms for each sport, including an expanded football locker room, improved office space and additional storage space. In addition the pool area has been completely renovated with improved lighting, new bleachers, new starting blocks, improved timing system and record board. The project also provided for enhancements to both the upper and lower entrances that will showcase the awards the teams have won over the last three decades. The project was completed in August of 2009.
